The three less-common ones are:

  • MERS-CoV, a beta virus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)

It's impressive what you can do when you get up early in the morning. Happy Easter, Happy Resurrection Sunday.

If you are just tuning in, the numbers are the deaths reported from COVID in NYC from the NYC Department of health website and the John Hopkins University. They have been off since day one. Which group is reporting correctly?

Lamentably, the Covid-19 crisis has gotten so out of hand that the stakeholders are in fear and letting fear determine their choices. The only way the crisis management team can get control over the narrative is to change the way the messaging is being released. And lamentably there has to be a scapegoat to blame the overreaction on.  The numbers...NYC is reporting 5,429 deaths and JHU is reporting 5,820 deaths in NYC. Compared to yesterday's numbers NYC is reporting 651 dead since yesterday and JHU is reporting 670 since yesterday. This, at least is a 19 point delta which is better than the 154 point delta seen on the 8th. They are still way off. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data.page https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html https://ncov2019.live/ https://covid19.healthdata.org/united-states-of-america/new-york https://www.foxnews.com/us/washington-field-hospital-coronavirus-dismantle https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/panicked-passengers-jump-ferry-after-21838451

Crime hasn't taken a break. There are still kidnappings, theft and burglary of vehicles, and robberies and assaults. And if things do start going back to "normal" crime will increase.  Our numbers from NYC are 4778, which shows an increase of 518 from yesterday and from JHU 5150, which shows an increase of 579. The number are still very wonky in that they aren't even close. This points back to the information that is coming out of the crisis management teams. Since this is a Global pandemic there should be a Federal CM team and State Crisis Management teams. And they should be working together. In the business world if a person or group of people in authority were to speak out-of-turn or question the CM leader that person would be relieved of command, and removed. But in this case we are seeing multiple versions of the "truth" which leads to confusion and distrust. https://covid19.healthdata.org/united-states-of-america/new-york https://ncov2019.live/ https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data.page https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

When managing a crisis, the crisis management team must be clear and concise in its communications. Is it isn't, it risks losing the trust of its employees and stakeholders.

As of this moment John Hopkins University of Medicine is reporting 2,624 deaths in NYC. But NYC department of health page is reporting 2,254. How is it that JHU is reporting 370 more deaths than NYC? Which website is correct? The NYC page says that it doesn't have the most up to date numbers. I can understand if we are talking about a discrepancy of up to 50 people maybe.....but 370? No way. One or the other of both are incorrect. In any case they are losing the public's trust.

It is imperative that we teach our children how to handle active shooter situations.

We need to be clear on escape routes. What to do when you aren't around. Rendezvous points in the store and outside the store. Identify the exit doors. Give them permission to run away and make noise.

This is our responsibility as adults to train and help them take those first steps.  You are security.

View Details

Let's be clear on one thing. You are Security. Your Security is based on what you do and don't do regarding the risks that you face everyday. That being said you might think that adding more cameras or guards is the best way to increase your awareness and preparation. And this isn't alway the right choice. As a corporate security manager, I would inform the executive of the events going on in the Company and when it came to a crisis or a risk that they hadn't thought of, they would often say, "Increase the security". This was translated to mean add more guards and cameras. And it was my job to take that direction and develop an environment that promoted security awareness and mitigated the gaps they perceived. In other words, I would come up with a simple plan that didn't alway need more cameras or guards but a simple change in policy or a tighter procedure to create the desired outcome. More physical security tools aren't the answer to everything. This is why it's important to do a proper assessment, identify the gaps in your organization, and select the proper solution to mitigate the gap. You will thank me later.

There’s a reason why we have processes. And it’s not to give us a headache although they can definitely be a pain in the butt. Processes safeguard us from social hacking, or as many call it, social engineering.

When we have processes in place it makes it more difficult for us to make decisions that could hurt us in the long run.

I always like it in spy movies when someone says “don’t trust anyone“. The reason why I like it, is because it’s true. We shouldn’t trust anyone. Even ourselves.

The trust that we have in ourselves makes us vulnerable. That’s why processes help us stay on the straight and narrow.

Someone once asked to me, "How do I safeguard my valuables when I'm traveling around the house?" We all have to do it. There is no way around having to carry valuables when you leave your house or your hotel. You'll keep them in your pockets or you may keep them in a bag or purse, but you will have to carry them with you to accomplish your activities in the day.

In this episode I explain a few of the best practices used by experienced International travelers throughout the world.

In this podcast I discuss how to respond to an illness while being on a trip.

As an international corporate security manager I had my share of traveler incidents. The good thing was that along with the traveler's insurance we had processes and plans in place to take care of anything that might happen. I've seen sprained ankles, appendicitis, suicides, acute kidney failure, anaphylactic shock and even a shooting victim while I managed three to six thousand travelers all over the world at any given day.

The recent deaths in the Dominican Republic are what the media is focusing on right now but these sort of events happen all over the World, every day. [NEWS LINK] As responsible individuals we need to plan our vacation, business trip, or holiday considering the possibility of a medical emergency in mind.

This podcast is a must. :)

In this episode I talk about having a plan and how that is a key component in saving your life.

I like to use real life examples of how, if applied, the keys to your security are effective. Last weekend a lady was robbed in the Local Mall parking lot as she was crossing the black top toward her car. All she had was her purse but the bad guy wrestled her to the ground and took off with it.

Here is the link: https://abc13.com/woman-dragged-in-violent-purse-snatching-at-woodlands-mall-/5304131/

The point here is that she was unaware that we are psychologically prone to grab the thing that is being taken from us. and that we usually assign unrealistic value to our possessions. Because of this we place ourselves in a precarious position without even realizing it.

What I mean is that when someone tries to take something from us we hold on to it and fight to keep it. It really doesn’t matter what it is. It could be purse, a bag of groceries, a bag of clothes we were going to donate anyway, but when we feel that something is being taken from us, we resist.

So in order to combat or go against that feeling it’s important to plan your reaction when it happened to you on the street. Plan on letting it go.

When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

I'm not casting any aspersions towards the police. As a former police officer, I feel I can say with confidence that the average police officer strongly desires to stop crime and catch the "bad guy". But the reality is that the police aren't everywhere at all times.

On an good day with the police right around the corner, their response time is 4 minutes. In a national average it's 12. Check out this article from A Secure Life and tell me what you think. Not very comforting, right?

So what does that leave us? What can we do? what should we do.

Listen and find out.

Have you ever gone out with your family and friends and you are so ON ALERT that you can't enjoy life? That happens to a lot of people who get into this line of work or people who simply realize that there are a lot of bad guys out there wanting to do evil. In this episode I talk about two games you can play to help you stay alert and aware and still live life.  Oh, and I'm enjoying my HEB Sweetened Sparkling water beverage. Woohoo Zero calories and all natural sweetener. I'm so good. [LINK HERE] I'm not getting anything out of this plug except the satisfaction that I'm promoting healthy drinks. :)

Are you telling your family and friends what you are learning? Learning to stay Alert and Aware, to have a plan is the basic steps you must know for life in this World but the second thing we must do is tell others. Even if they think we're crazy or dismiss it because they think these steps don't fit what they understand.

  • Family
  • Friends
  • School
  • Houses of Worship
  • Shopping Centers

Find out what they know and find out what sort of plans they have in place. If they don't have a plan then offer them suggestions. If they do have a plan, then learn what it is. If it doesn't fit the steps of Evading, Barakading, Immobilizing (Run, Hide, Fight) then take action to get them to reconsider. And if that doesn't work think about another school or house of worship.

Additional Thoughts:

I've read many tweet posts referring to this event and citing a need for Sensible Gun Laws. These posts shock me because they show a lack of common sense. Laws don't stop crime. Our focus as a society should be two-fold.

  1. Identify "why" these events happen, and
  2. Stop the disregard of human life

The Shooting Information:

May 7, 2019 the Douglas County Sheriff's office said deputies heard shots coming from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) School in Highlands Ranch, about 40 km or 25 miles south of Denver when they arrived to investigate reports of gunfire.

Taken from New York Times website: "Tyler Rush, 17, a junior, said he had been on the second floor of the school, just above where the shooting occurred. He said that it began during the day’s final period and that the school announced a lockdown in the middle school portion of the building. He and his classmates gathered in a corner and turned out the lights. Some cried. Some sat paralyzed."

Just in, there was a shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charleston. According to the news, 2 have been confirmed dead. I don't have any more information but it is a chilling event when you are into account that only a year 3 days ago on April 27th there was another shooting in California where a person shot four people one of whom has died.  Mass shootings are no joke and should be considered when building your security plan and personal protocol.  In this episode I discuss becoming desensitized to violence and how that puts you at a greater risk of becoming a victim.  Remember to always go back to these three things:

A Plan Situational Awarness Take Action

Know your surroundings and have a plan to avoid risks and threats to your wellbeing. Have a plan of escape or avoidance.  Be aware always of the people and actions around you. Consider the social framing around you. Ask yourself if a person or people should be there. Do they fit the frame? If a person, people, or activities don't fit the frame its time to take action. Remember that you can not decide whether or not you should take action when the event is happening. You must have already committed to the plan all you are waiting for is the proper trigger or event that doesn't fit the frame. Then you must act with out hesitation.

Ok So you're going to the movies. Well, going to the movies today involves a lot more than when I would go back in college. And I'm not talking just about money.

Your security is of utmost importance. In the past the movie theaters were more concerned with keeping people out that hadn't paid but in today's word, it's more about keeping the patrons safe from someone attempting to harm them as they sit in aa dark room and watch a movie screen, immersed in the story.

Join me, as I talk about what you should be considering when you visit the movies. ;)

As you travel internationally, one of the details you should consider is your clothing. There should be several factors you should consider when making this decision.

  • Where are you going?
  • Who is waiting for you on the other end?
  • Will you be taking public transportation or will you have a prearranged driver?
  • What is the weather like where you're going?
  • How comfortable are the clothes you're choosing?
  • Can you run (at least briefly, at least 1-2 city blocks) in the shoes you will be wearing?
  • Do the clothes allow for easy access to papers or devices you may have stashed away in pockets?
  • How many bags will you be carrying?

Remember, the bad guys are looking for the best ROI. They are asking themselves, which person is showing the most value for the effort and time they will invest in an altercation. That value is based on the clothing, accessories, and your personal look.

Your personal look includes, among other things, your hairstyle and cut, your manicure, your walk and the way you look around at the people and the items around you.

It's important to blend into the crowd. This can be accomplished but doing some research. Your secretary can call the secretary of the person you will be meeting and ask them or by reviewing YouTube videos of the place you will be visiting. Youtube will offer you a more well-rounded look at what people look like and how they act, but it will take longer to watch enough video to get a good sense of it.

For the most part I travel in

  • a pair of jeans,
  • slip-on shoes, (prefer Merrell and Keen shoes)
  • Short-sleeve shirt with pockets (I find that for me, Under Armour has the most comfortable and breathable shirts) UA Tac Shirt
  • Depending on whether I'm traveling on business or for pleasure I might wear a sports jacket or a light leather jacket.

Something to think about. Make sure to wear your travel clothes several times before using them for travel. This will lower the "new look" and will help with blending in.
