“We are makers and thinkers who design places with people. We are optimistic, collaborative, creative and inquiring.”
Local Works Studio are a young design practice based in East Sussex, born out of the collaboration between a Landscape Architect and a Vernacular Building Specialist. They design for landscapes and buildings with an emphasis on the sustainable use of on-site materials. By utilising site won materials, or identifying hyper local materials through mapping, Local Works Studio are speaking of place through the materiality of their projects.
Our first conversational episode is with Loretta and Ben of Local Works Studio and it centres on how they approach their projects, explores the process they go through and how this might be applied to more traditional practice. We touch on the Circular Economy, the designer’s role in this way of thinking and how site won materials potentially pose problems to the designer.
We hope you enjoy the conversation.

This episode of the DWG pod centres around the topic of "Designed Ecology" and Rewilding. Admittedly, listening back, you could say that this episode comes across as a little bit of a rant, but it's only because we both can see the long term benefits of the topics we discussed. They are landscape scale solutions to some of our most pressing problems. We'd love the opportunity to chat to anyone working on these types of projects. We hope you enjoy it and please get in touch via the website https://www.dwgpodcast.co.ukOr we are @DWGpod on Twitter and @DWGpodcast on instagramHere are some of the links we mention in our conversation: Old Lands farm http://old-lands.co.uk/wildlife/Knepp Castle Estatehttps://knepp.co.uk/homeGeorge Monbiot's websitehttps://www.monbiot.comBuy his book Feral herehttps://www.hive.co.uk/Product/George-Monbiot/Feral--Rewilding-the-Land-Sea-and-Human-Life/13974309Rewilding Britain's websitehttps://www.rewildingbritain.org.uk
