For Apa, Raul Bonifacio Rubalcava. My dad has been on my mind alot lately and twice in my dreams last week. The last one, I was waiting for him at a hotel to go sightseeing in my favorite city, NYC. I go twice a year (May & late Fall) as a writing retreat and to refuel my artist well. I've never traveled out there with him. But there we were hand in hand, my dad, alive. The last time I was in NY was for my birthday, he walked the streets with me, but I cried out on a Central Park bench alone wishing he was really with me. The only thing I wrote on that trip was this poem. For you dad.
Dedicated to Sonia Guzman. This is the first of a series of poems I have written of "my twin", my homegirl Sonia. Written October 10, 2010.
My prized possessions are my books. Especially my used books. When I travel, I leave room for the dozens of books I buy at used bookstores where ever I am visiting. I'm a huge fan of Cherrie Moraga's work and have collected all her books. That morning felt like magic was passing through me holding on to her book. I have since shared the poem with her and she re-signed the book when we met again. I also shared the poem and others I've written about my homegirl to Sonia before she passed a year later in 2011. Dedicated to my parents Gloria Margarita Rubalcava & Raul Bonifacio Rubalcava. This poem was written in 2015, after a long weekend at a writing retreat led by Cherrie Moraga. Thank you to the community of writers and the ceremonial fire that inspired it.
A love poem to my favorite writing tool. Drafted in Berkeley at a writing retreat in January 2016. Revised a few dozen times in Santa Ana 2016-2018.
