In this episode of The Mindful Business, I share why wellbeing is no longer a nice-to-have - it's a leadership essential. I explore how outdated leadership models are still driving burnout, what stress really looks like today, and why we need more than surface-level solutions.

You'll hear my own story of pushing through during pregnancy, why acute stress is rising, and how leaders and organisations can start doing things differently.

We'll look at:

  • The real cost of ignoring leader wellbeing
  • What sustainable leadership actually looks like
  • Practical first steps for creating healthier team cultures
  • Why getting external support can make all the difference

If you're a leader holding a lot, this episode is your reminder that staying well is not a weakness. It's a strategy.

Listen in and share with a leader who needs to hear this.

Final thought This isn't about lowering standards. It's about making success sustainable.

A burned-out leader can't inspire. But a grounded one? A well-resourced one? They can transform an entire culture.

You don't have to be superhuman. You just have to be honest about what you need, and how you lead.

Because wellbeing isn't the soft stuff. It's the stuff that makes everything else possible.

In this episode of The Mindful Business, I share my personal journey through burnout and the powerful lesson it taught me: you don't achieve more by doing more - you achieve more by stressing less. We explore why hustle culture keeps us stuck in survival mode, what chronic stress really does to your brain, and how small, intentional changes can help you feel calmer, clearer, and more effective at work and in life. If you're an ambitious woman juggling business, career, or family (or all three), this episode is your reminder that sustainable success starts with your wellbeing.

In this episode, you'll learn: * Why stress becomes our "normal" - and how to retrain your brain * The hidden cost of being constantly busy and always on * My personal burnout story and what finally helped me reset * Why being busy isn't the same as being effective * Three practical tools to reduce overwhelm: the 4 Ds, micro-pauses, and intentional endings to your workday

Final thought You don't need to hustle harder to succeed. When you feel calmer and clearer, you lead better, think better, and get more of the right things done.

What happens when your mind never switches off, stress feels constant, and life becomes a cycle of overwhelm and survival mode?

In this powerful and honest conversation, I'm joined by Sarah Cardwell, a long-standing mindfulness client, as she shares how mindfulness became a turning point in her mental health, her career and her confidence as a working mum.

Diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and Generalised Anxiety Disorder while working in high-pressure sales, Sarah reached a point where traditional therapies were no longer enough. Mindfulness was the one tool she never believed would work and the one that ultimately helped her quiet her racing mind, rebuild self-trust and create healthier boundaries in work and life.

In this episode we explore:

  • What it really feels like when your mind never switches off
  • Why CBT and other therapies did not fully work for Sarah, and why mindfulness did
  • How learning to pause helped her to react differently to stress
  • The moment she realised that peace, not busyness, was what she truly craved
  • How mindfulness supported her return to work, career confidence and leadership
  • Why workplace wellbeing is about culture, not just perks
  • What healthy boundaries and balance actually look like in real life

Sarah also shares how she now works in a company with a genuine wellbeing culture, and why feeling valued, seen and supported at work matters more than any surface-level wellness initiative.

This episode is for you if you feel constantly "on", if your mind struggles to rest, or if you're navigating anxiety, burnout or a demanding career while trying to hold everything together.

A deeply human conversation about awareness, self-compassion, boundaries and learning to live with more presence and less pressure.

About Sarah:

Sarah is a 42-year-old sales manager at a leading hotel chain and a mother of two teenage daughters.

Being diagnosed with BPD and GAD in 2018 led her on a journey to explore mental health and wellbeing.

She also enjoys sharing her experiences with wellness, along with the products and experiences offered by TEMPLESPA. In addition, Sarah manages a team of 40 men and women who are building a business and generating extra income through wellbeing and skincare experiences.

Every January we're encouraged to set new goals and come back to work energised, focused, and ready to perform. But for many busy professionals, that pressure lands at exactly the wrong time.

In this episode, I explore why January goal-setting so often fails - not because of a lack of motivation or discipline, but because of exhaustion, stress, and a mismatch between natural energy and workplace expectations.

We'll look at:

  • The hidden pressure of January at work
  • Why most New Year's resolutions don't last
  • How working with seasonal rhythms supports sustainable change
  • Why rest and recovery are foundational to wellbeing and performance
  • A gentle reflection for those who want clarity without overwhelm

If January feels heavier than expected, this episode offers a calmer, more realistic way forward.

In this episode, I open up about what really happens when we press pause and why slowing down isn't a weakness, but a vital part of sustainable success.

After years of constant movement - building a business, raising a family, moving countries - I realised that burnout doesn't come from a badly organised to-do list. It comes from never stopping long enough to breathe.

Join me as I share my personal experience of learning to stop, rest, and yield to life - and the surprising clarity and energy that came from doing so.

In this episode we explore:

  • What it really means to press pause (and why it's so hard to do)
  • How I recognised my own resistance to slowing down
  • The idea of "yielding to life" and what it teaches us about balance
  • Why permission to rest must come from you - not anyone else
  • How taking a mindful pause can reconnect you to calm, clarity, and confidence

Key Takeaway

Burnout isn't fixed by rearranging your to-do list. It's eased by stopping long enough to remember who you are outside of what you do. The pause isn't a setback; it's a reset.

Mindfulness isn’t just about breathing exercises or staying calm under pressure. And it’s definitely not about zoning out or toxic positivity.

In business, we’ve reduced mindfulness to a wellness ā€œadd-onā€ - something you do in a break room or after hours. But real mindfulness is far more powerful than that.

In my latest podcast episode, I unpack:

  • What mindfulness really is (and what it’s not)
  • Why businesses often miss the mark when they try to ā€œdo mindfulnessā€
  • How awareness, clarity and emotional regulation are essential leadership skills
  • What it looks like to embed mindful practices into culture, not just campaigns

This one’s especially for anyone leading teams, shaping culture, or trying to do things differently without burning out.

But this isn’t just about me. It’s about what so many of us face - especially women in demanding leadership roles and how we can begin to shift from survival to sustainability.

Montse’s passion for her work is so evident fromt he moment you speak to her. She is full of energy and drive for her work and what great work it is.

She created HAPPYSHIFTING after experiencing workplaces where down shifting was the norm. After working for Great Place to Work and experiencing what great workplace wellness looks like, she decided there had to be a better way to work with passion and joy.

As soon as our paths crossed I knew she would be a great person to share her experiences on the show.

What we chat about:

  • The importance of psychological safety at work and what is REALLY means
  • Why wellness is nothing to do with spas and gyms
  • Where the responsibility for good wellbeing lies
  • How workplaces can make wellbeing simple when they start with trust
  • The one thing businesses can do to kickstart a positive culture and it’s free!

About Montse and HAPPYSHIFTING

Montse is a globally-minded social entrepreneur with over 25 years experience in the space where people and organizations cohabit: work. She is proof that the place that you are now, does not need to be the place you end up in.

Montse led the growth of the HR function in the Inditex Group, as the 3rd person in HR at the time of exponential growth, opening almost 1 shop a day. This was followed by a period in retail to ground strategy in shop-floor reality for Christian Dior in London.

She then returned to Spain to lead Great Place to Work dedicated to finding, understanding and promoting the best workplaces in the country where she led the business from a EU grant to one of the best affiliates in the world. In 2009 Montse stepped out alone to transition from being an intra- to an entrepreneur, launching Grooooow, a boutique Management Consultant focused on wellbeing and engagement.

This led her to many speaking engagements, publish a book and win awards for achievements for her work.

She says, ā€œLastly, but not least importantly, as well as being a social entrepreneur, I am a mother of two boys Timothy and Harley, and married to my business partner Daniel. I am Tri-lingual (Spanish, English, Catalan), a fan of Feng Shui, and a leisure runner having represented Catalonia as a 1.000m runner as a teenager.ā€

In this episode Emma Jarvis, founder of Dearbump shares her passion for creating workplaces that support parents from pregnancy through to parenthood.
When parents are celebrated and supported through their journey, it creates more positive birth experiences and mentally stronger employees.
So why aren't more businesses focusing on their parental workforce?

Emma founded Dearbump through her own experiences of becoming a mum while working for a company.

We talk about:

  • The impact of positively celebrating and sharing your pregnancy journey at work on you and your baby
  • How business can support their parental workforce better

In all my guest interviews, I ask the experts and leaders what their business wellbeing looks like.

How do they check wellbeing is part of the culture and how do they keep it at the heart of their business?

The answers are all different- and yet fundamentally the same.

So I thought I’d share with you what the common secret sauce is and how you can check what the wellbeing status of your business is.

Interestingly, recent research conducted at C-Suite level by Deloitte showed how important the culture is when it comes to wellbeing and how businesses can often get it wrong and think they are doing a great job when they aren't.

Only 47% of workers believe their executives understand how difficult the pandemic has been for them, yet 90% of the C-suite say they do recognize how challenging it’s been

I won’t give it all away here - in this episode I talk about:

  • The 3 clear ways to check if wellbeing is a part of the culture
  • How to get into the heads of your employees and find out what they are thinking about wellbeing
  • Why anonymous polls are a great way to do a temperature check of the business
  • The real impact of presenteeism on businesses, and it’s not just financial
  • What happens when you get all 3 steps right

If you love this episode, I’m hosting a free webinar on Wednesday 19th October on this subject to share 3 ways you can boost your personal wellbeing and 3 ways you can start building the wellbeing wealth of your business.

It’s for business owners who want to create happier workplaces and for people within those businesses that want to support their work culture and improve their own wellbeing at work.

It’s free and I’d love you to join - you can sign up here!

In this episode the brilliant Jackie Shears joins me to share her personal experiences of mental stress in the workplace and how it led to her becoming a Mental Health Instructor and creating Healthy Minds Healthy Business - supporting teams to be mentally healthy.

We chat about:

  • How a data driven role in the NHS led Jackie to the work she does today
  • Who is responsible for wellbeing in the business
  • How organisations can REALLY support their people (it’s not with fresh fruit and yoga)
  • Why Jackie was awarded an OBE and what it means to her and her work
  • Some advice to businesses and individuals who want to encourage wellbeing in their workplace

About Jackie…

Jackie Shears spent 30 in the public sector, including 20 years in various senior roles in the NHS. In that time she experienced the highs and lows good and poor workplace cultures, all the while believing she was superwoman and could rise above anything. A sustained spell of high stress taught her she was, in fact, only human, and gave her an object lesson in what poor mental health really means, feels like and does to you. After 3 months on sick leave and lots of subsequent learning, she trained as a mental health first aider, then as a mental health first aid instructor. Recognising these are valuable additions to a healthy workplace culture – but not the whole answer, she also provides support to design and develop Mental Health strategies for organisations and also delivers bespoke training aimed at building line manager capability to understand and manage their teams in a Mentally Health way.

In this second part of my reflections, I go into more depth of pushing through but not through work! Persevering with the things we know we love doing - even and especially when we don’t feel like it.

A big realisation for me over the past few months is that one of my core values is connection.

Yet when I've not been feeling myself I've done the classic thing of hiding myself away. And while it's been restorative to heal and get better in the quiet of my own head it's also meant I've not allowed the one thing I know to really lift me.

I’ll be digging into:

  • Why we shy away from the things we know are good for us
  • The tricks our brain plays on us to keep us safe
  • How positive connections can help us feel happier
  • Why we need to do the things we love especially when we aren’t in the mood!

Listen in and let me know - what’s the one thing you LOVE doing but let slip, and what commitment can you make TODAY to bring it back into your life?

  • My biggest lessons from the past 6 months of overwhelm, reflection and pause
  • Why I feel more resilient than ever
  • The single most important thing you can do when you’re feeling on the road to burn out

There’s a part 2 on it’s way so get stuck into this episode and I’d love to hear your thoughts!

With the experience she gained in her career, she decided to pivot a few years ago into the world of wellbeing, where she first worked with Deloitte in Consulting in the UK, to design, develop and deliver on a comprehensive wellbeing strategy that was linked to the overall business focus.

By being able to create positive shifts and change in the business, Arti was inspired to continue to grow in this area and is now leading the Ocado Group Globally from a wellbeing standpoint. Outside of her day to day working life Arti continues to emulate a life committed to the wellbeing agenda as she is also a qualified executive & life coach and personal trainer, as well as an Advisor to organisations such as Mind and HR Grapevine on topics surrounding the Responsible Business Agenda.

You’re doing enough, you are enough and your best is good enough!

This is the mantra for this episode, where I had the pleasure of welcoming the brilliant Jemma Andrew-Adiamah to the show.

Jemma is a holistic Empowerment Coach and mum of 2 that helps unfulfilled mums to put themselves first without the guilt. She help mums feel fabulous, achieve the mental clarity they need to reconnect with themselves and rediscover their ambitions so that they can step into a fulfilling and joyful life while balancing mamahood.

We talked about all the ways women, especially mums, can get lost in the fog of motherhood and discussed ways to help us step out of it so we can thrive!

Our chat included:

  • Who the non negotiable is in your life (hint- you're looking at her!)

  • Why we have lost the ability to put ourselves first and find joy and how to rediscover it

  • What successful self love looks like

  • The silver lining on the covid cloud - there is one! and tips on how to chart a course through these weird times

  • The power of well-being even when it's messy and imperfect

  • The common struggles as a professional mum and how to overcome them

  • How to balance your home family and work family and stay sane

This episode has been a long time coming - I've been wanting to cover this subject and understand the conversation better myself for many months so I'm thrilled to have Ashanti Bentil - Dhue on the podcast talking all about creating diverse workplaces where the honest conversations go deep!

Ashanti is Founder and CEO at EventMind, a market leader in the virtual meetings and events sector. EventMind provides training, consultancy and delivery for businesses looking to engage virtually with their audience and community. EventMind specialises in creating diverse digital communities and events, with access to 300 event technologies. Ashanti is currently a judge on a number of awards panels, including the Eventex Awards, Independent Publisher Awards and the Virtual Event Institute Awards.

Ashanti and her team is organising a 2-day corporate well-being event called Wellness Engaged – aimed at how to take a holistic approach to managing mental health in the workplace. Get your FREE ticket here

We cover A LOT in this chat so get ready....we talk about:

  • How we can raise our awareness around diversity as individuals and a collective

  • What diversity and inclusion looks like currently in the UK workplace (hint- it’s bad!) and how we can start to address this

  • How well-being intersects with diversity - what showing up to work well means for people when they are able to be themselves fully

  • How a toxic workplace culture can affect the white male as much as the black woman – we need to look at workplace culture and how to accept ALL

  • Where courage and self-awareness in business leaders comes in (this is where the work starts)

  • How our perceptions impact our conscious bias – we know we have them but have we faced them? (this looks like how we react when we see certain types of people who present for interview)

  • And finally Why D&I is becoming essential for businesses to adopt – it's what the next gen of employees will expect and what our society needs

Laura set up the creative-industry coaching company, No More Ifs Or Buts and workplace wellbeing company, Stress Matters to support businesses and their people to feel better and work smarter. I’m most excited by Laura’s work around mental health for employees and how businesses can create thriving cultures for people, especially now.

In this episode we explore:

  • Why the events industry needs to talk about stress now more than ever with the industry being hit hard

  • How depression and anxiety in adults is on the rise and how we can change our attitude towards mental health

  • How businesses are embracing a new version of well-being – its not just about online pilates and stress management training

Laura is one of my favourite people in the work well-being world – she credits mindfulness as the catalyst for changing the way she manages her digital well-being, she’s an absolute joy to chat to and she tells it like it is in the most hilarious, candid way.

In this episode we put the well-being world to rights and talk about:

  • Our love affair with technology and what happens when it turns sour.

  • How covid turned how employees use tech upside down.

  • How we have become over reliant on our phones and it’s not working!

  • How we are all sheep (hear us out here!) and how it takes mindful intention to step away from the crowd.

  • Laura shares her best strategies to improve how you manage your digital attachments – and she claims she has the best work life balance ever!

  • Top tips to improve how you use social media if you're not ready to delete it.

  • How the most simple strategies are often the most powerful when it comes to controlling your phone, rather than letting it control you.

And bonus tip: The one thing no one knows about Outlook that will change your life and tame your inbox.

Laura is the UK’s leading expert on managing mental wellbeing in a digital age and a thought-leader on protecting work-life balance in our always-on world.

An entertaining and candid speaker Laura experienced a period of poor mental health in 2012 resulting from digital overload. This inspired her to launch Shine Offline in 2015 to help businesses understand the importance of supporting staff to have healthy relationships with their work and personal technology. Shine Offline clients to date include O2, PwC, ITV, Lacoste, Barclays and the UK Parliament.

How does someone whose work focuses on understanding community well-being, manage their own well-being in a pandemic?

When Covid-19 hit I remembered conversations I’d shared with Lucy Donoughue from Happiful magazine about what people’s priorities were around wellness and mental health. This was in February 2020 (which seems like a lifetime ago!) just before Corona appeared in our world.

I was curious to know what Happiful and Lucy’s research was bringing up in the middle of a pandemic and how someone who focuses on well-being manages their own mental health.

When life gives you lemons…do you really make lemonade?

I’m so pleased to welcome Lucy Donoughue for this episode where we share lockdown lessons, corona-isms and what the world looks like when we lose all certainty and control.

It’s a juicy one so grab a cuppa!

Lucy is the host of I am. I have podcast, contributing writer for Happiful Magazine and Head of Partnerships for the Happiful Family, which includes Counselling Directory and Life Coach Directory. Lucy is particularly interested in highlighting that while we all have mental health, and some of us will have mental illness, this doesn’t define who we are. She has lived with OCD since her teenage years and is an advocate of therapy and open conversations about mental health in the workplace.

Lockdown lessons we share:

  • The importance of making conversations about mental health normal and how C-19 has affected this

  • How people are coping with Corona and lockdown

  • The long term effects of Corona and what our new normal looks like

  • How to really truly cope with uncertainty and being ok with the unstable ground

  • An amazing tool to appreciate the benefits of this time

  • All the corona-isms - unusual challenges, the words we never thought we would be using

  • Our best lockdown lessons including writing a letter to your future self at https://www.futureme.org/

See all the amazing work Lucy and the team at Happiful does to create a happier, healthier society.

In 2019 after running a hugely stressful event and seeing the negative impact on her event team, Amy Miller booked her team on my signature 8-week mindfulness programme.

Amy is Group Portfolio Director of the Oil & Gas division at Clarion Events and she and her team run complex, global events.

Her aim was both selfish - in wanting the team to be less stressed and perform at their best for the business and selfless - in caring about their well-being.

In less than a year her event team has radically shifted the way they cope with the high-pressure of event life. Going through the transformational mindfulness programme, they finished calmer, more resilient and happier and the results were seen in their event success.

So when Covid-19 hit and the event industry was turned upside down, I was keen to find out how they were coping and if any of the mindfulness tools they’d learnt were supporting them through this crazy time.

We met (virtually!) to talk about why mindfulness had such a big impact on the team and their events and how it can change a business culture from the inside out.

In this episode we will share:

  • The impact of stress in events and how mindfulness has changed the way this team works

  • Why mindfulness is the most effective tool to manage stress and anxiety

  • How mindfulness can impact staff sickness and loyalty to the business

  • How to get buy in to run well-being programmes from your business and why going to the top helps!

  • If your business leaders deal in facts (and so they should), then mindfulness offers tangible, measurable results

  • Why well-being initiatives will only work in a thriving culture of wellbeing and trust

  • How mindfulness is far from fluffy and not just about breathing!

Clarion is one of the world's leading events organisers, producing and delivering innovative and market-leading events since 1947.

To find out more about my signature 8-week mindfulness programme drop me a message and let’s chat to see if it can transform your team too!

Have you accepted that you'll never have a great night's sleep?

Do you think resting during the day is a guilty pleasure you don't have time to indulge in?

Do you think good sleep has no place in the workplace?

If so, then you need to listen in to this episode! I talk about the power of good sleep with my good friend Risa Gabrielle.

Risa is a certified sleep therapist, clarity coach and yoga teacher. Her passion is empowering people to create sustainable changes, whether it's improving your sleep, getting your body to move with more ease and less pain, or figuring out how to create a life you love.

She comes to her sleep therapy work from a place of personal experience, having suffered with major sleep problems for years. Now her sleep has been completely transformed, and she loves nothing more than helping others to achieve quality sleep. She believes that sleep is our birthright, the most natural thing we can, and that you don’t have to suffer being tired all the time. Risa’s approach is down-to-Earth, intuitive and practical. Most of all, it's about long-lasting solutions over quick fixes.

In this episode you'll learn:

  • The obvious things you don’t know about sleep

  • Why understanding your sleep rhythm can literally change your life

  • Why you don't have to put up with crap sleep

  • How workplace culture is so connected to sleep

  • How the modern world doesn't support us to have good sleep

  • How sleep relates back to our mental, physical and emotional health

  • How sleep issues can literally ruin your life but the good news is they can be fixed!

In this episode of The Mindful Business I had the honour of welcoming the founder of Live Well London Sam Willoughby onto the show – to talk about making well-being accessible and what living well means to each and everyone of us.

I was introduced Sam - through my event network and it turns out we share a similar story - both spending many years working on global exhibitions only to discover a passion for well-being and change our careers.

Sam started her own event business in 2018 and launched Live Well after seeing a gap in the market for a wellness event that focused on not just the body but also the mind - because that’s where wellness starts!

The event now welcomes 120 experts, over 130 classes and workshops over 3 days as well as housing a shopping village of 70 curated brands.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Where the concept of Live Well started and why this is a unique event in a crowded market

  • How Live Well encourages you to live a well life and then gives you the chance to try it out in a live class!

  • What place well-being has in the corporate world and how companies can take strategies and practices back to their offices

  • The latest trends in well-being – being credible, clear and inclusive

  • The importance of creating a safe space where people can try new concepts in a welcoming place

  • How the Live Well team practices what they preach and live their best lives
