Did you know that collard greens, yams, and pork chop dinners were a funding source for the  Montgomery Bus Boycott? Mrs. Georgia Gilmore was a cook, entrepreneur, and activist and worked knee-deep with the boycott as one that prepared these dinners.

This episode started last year. I was stuck (head and emotions), said nothing, made no money and did not ask for help. The source of my life event became apparent while I was guesting on a podcast (the wonderment of a safe place). By that time, I had asked for help with my business which is now Go Beyond The Interview LLC.

I guess that God, the source, the universe knew that I would need a backup to reinforce the seriousness of not asking for help, being honest. So along comes Elayne Fluker's book Get Over "I Got It." The Audible Books platform and I became family for three days as I devoured this reinforcement to what I had just gone through. So a word from now, a much wiser woman, "ask for help when you need it."

Moving from employee to entrepreneur is a turbulent uncharted region. You will not understand the taxes (don't get me started on that tax $%& Tiffany P!), marketing, social media, and modify the business structure without help. No shame. The shame is in staying stuck, having a pity party, watch the money you made evaporate because you are in a place of not making a penny (can I be transparent here). Does anybody else feel me? Let me hear from you!  j1Kh6ExpTiGq2xy4Y45u

Na'ilah Amaru - fiercely informed, a democratic strategist able to help all of us understand "politics" government, the dynamics of power, and mobilizing communities to stay vigilant, do the long-term work, and celebrate every victory. Meet Na'ilah Amaru, policy strategist, and advocate, political commentator, Iraq Veteran. We discuss the polarization America is experiencing now.

Her website – http://nailahamaru.com/about-nailah-amaru/ Understand why podcasts, national news outlets, publications call for her take, insight.

Questions answered:

You have dedicated your adult life to serving this country, positioning and, yes, qualifying yourself to be effective via the political arena. But are you still as passionate and hopeful today as you were even ten years ago?

How vital are nonprofits to the heartbeat (political in particular)?

Why is it essential to become informed about the issues, candidates on the ballot, and vote? Is it more important today than it was even five years ago?

Voter reforms, your thoughts, and how you will explain all of this to your community?

Do you believe that grassroots movements are powerful? Explain.

Margo - (3m 18s): So are you as enthusiastic about this work, being a democratic strategist, the world of politics, you started 20 years ago, are you still as enthusiastic about it today, as you were said, even 10 years ago?

Na'ilah -(4m 5s): I love that question. And the short answer is yes, I am just as passionate and hopeful for the world today as I started out, you know, over 20 years ago, the nuanced answer, however, is yes, and also a lot more experienced. You know, when I first started, you know, embarking on grassroots organizing and building community power, a lot of it was really rooted in understanding that dismantling systems of oppression is a long game and a long game never really, you know, hits home until you've been doing this work for decades.

Na'ilah - 4m 47s): And you realize I have been pushing for advocacy changes. I had been working in law and government, and nonprofit. Oftentimes we are still fighting for the very same things that generations before us have been fighting. I am a Congressman John Lewis alumna, and one of the lessons, one of the many lessons I've learned from being in his presence and watching him working alongside him has been, the work is long and that's the commitment and discipline of community organizing and our work as organizers, as advocates, as strategists as everyday people, in dismantling all the systems of oppression that we navigate every day is to understand that it can be a long process, but also to find joy in knowing that every day we are not working alone. We are surrounded by fellow advocates and organizers and strategists and everyday people who are just as in love with this promise of America as I am.

Today’s conversation is with jazz vocalist Grammy-nominated artist Carmen Lundy. It happened on my birthday, a gift I cherish!

Conversation highlights:

  • Music opened the world to her, but she began in Miami (hometown). She went to NYC to launch her recording career, not get into nightclub singing, which is demanding. But she worked hard gigging while going to school! Take a listen, and you can understand the magnitude of her talent, hoot spa, love for her musical studies while singing six nights a week!
  • Her work in Europe
  • Her brother Curtis, their background, and its impact on her music
  • How she creatively worked through the early lockdown days of covid and the negativity in the world.

Carmen spent 8-to-10-hour days, four ½ months to edit VHS film that celebrates the music & conversations of her mother and aunts, singers in a gospel group for over 40 years! To revisit that “time tunnel” was a gift, and Nothing But The Blood was born!

  • Her Grammy-nominated work Modern Ancestors https://youtu.be/8dyKPez2SM0
  • We speak of her work Soul to Soul. Had I not been in strict fangirl mode, I would have asked her about her creations - When they would learn and Daybreak! (lol missed opportunity)
  • The pandemic has been tough on professional musicians – contribute to Afrasia Productions/ PayPal &Venmo or The Jazz Foundation of America https://jazzfoundation.org/covid19fund/

Website - https://carmenlundy.com/ Shop, dance, enjoy the videos; it’s an experience!

You absolutely must “shop” while exploring Carmen’s website! My personal favorites/ Jazz And The New Songbook – Live At The Madrid (2-cd collection). Soul To Soul / Modern Ancestors. Sit back, enjoy the videos, and when you have a chance to catch this fantastic artist live, do not let the opportunity get past you! It’s as though you are with her, live jazz!

Covid, lack of tourism, banks closed; recovery does not happen overnight, and you listener can help! Tosh and PADI have assisted with care packages, but a great need is still there; We can help.

Today's guest Terrall E. Tillman Sr. (author, poet, self-made authority on prevention, intervention, and incarceration), transparently takes us on his 19-year journey in the federal prison system. Terrall is transparent, takes us into the cause for his incarceration, the impact, and trying to re-enter as a free man; it's not for the faint of heart. Website: https://reentry-030.com/

What we discuss:

Factors that led to his incarceration

Impact of serving 11 years in the federal penitentiary

Reentry behavior- hit the ground running, five years of positive forward movement.

Walking down a road only to meet an informant-the encounter brought consequences after two years.

His life now:

Five years’ probation lived out 2 as of today.

He is missioned to help the incarcerated re-enter this new world and work as a case manager, a mentor.

“It’s all bout the mindset” is what this straight shooter tells clients.

There are a lot of re-entry programs out there now because re-entry is an entity. So resources are available to clients.

P.S. It’s not the PO’s (parole officer) job to get resources for those on probation.

Inspiration Thursday – Podcast producer Laila Noort takes us into the podcast industry in Europe. Fascinating episode!

Questions this episode will answer:

  • How popular is podcasting in most of Europe?
  • There are always barriers, challenges; what are podcasters & podcast producers facing in Europe?
  • What is it like to be a podcaster in Europe?

Here are facts and points of interest that came up during the conversation.

Inspiration Thursday is not about kicking car tires 4th of July weekend. Instead, it's my true story about a pivotal decision concerning podcasting many years ago. I make mention of Live365 often, but I am no longer on that platform, nor am I an affiliate; it's part of my history!
Highlights:
There are two types of tire kickers
Why hire a coach while tire-kicking? - I didn't, and I paid the price with time.

A conversation that I had with a boomer woman working remotely for months sparked this episode. This model works for her family, her mental health and represents how to end her working days with the company. She gets a call from corporate; everybody is back in the office within 30 days! This woman had purposed from day one to work the rest of her days remotely.
Being Christian, she asked me to pray. I told her that I would, but what came to mind was the question, what your exit strategy? I posed that question, her response was that she does not have one, though she already vowed not to return to the office. It's been months, but she has done nothing except pray that what she wants to have happened desperately works in her favor.
Today's monologue is my view from another window, not belittling anyone. I'm asking a big question to inspire you to create your exit strategy, open your eyes as to why this must be done. I'm going to tell you why you need to have your exit strategy in place, what the Bible and some of the incredible teachers of the Bible have to say about preparation.

Today’s guest is Lucy Forsting. Reiki Master, podcaster, author. Our conversation is about her energy work, and the fact that “our mind creates our outcome.” The Adventures of Miss Twiggs and Company” is certainly not just a children’s book; Lucy wrote it to help us understand how thoughts actually do create the reality we experience each day.

Insightful takeaways:

  • There are brain cells in our heart.
  • Our heart is our intuition.
  • Intellect is not the way to make decisions.
  • We are here to give love and understand love.
  • Be sure to listen to Lucy’s thoughts about big pharmaceutical companies and the pandemic!

Marketing expert Tim Fitzpatrick – “let's first start by defining what marketing is. I like to keep things as simple as possible. So, to me, marketing is getting someone who has a need or a problem that you can solve to know, like, and trust you.

It always comes back to the fundamentals. So what are the fundamentals? I like to call them the marketing strategy Trilogy.”

I also put together some resources for your audience that I think will help support what we talked about, https://www.rialtomarketing.com/her-business/

Key Points/show notes upon request (margo@margolovett.com – “show notes” in the subject line)

  • Okay, the job of marketing is to warm potential prospects up to what we do, get them interested to the point where they're ready to buy or take that next step in some way, shape, or form with your company
  • in downturns, a lot of business owners, one of the first things they look at doing is cutting marketing, Hey, how many employees can I cut... How much marketing can I cut? And to me, I think that is a recipe for disaster long-term, because if you do not have marketing bringing in customers, how can you expect to do business.
  • If you can find a way to continue to invest in marketing while most of your competitors are cutting, you're setting yourself up to differentiate your business and laying a foundation where I think your business will thrive long-term.
  • If you do not have the fundamentals down, there's no way that you can step up to the plate with the baseball bat and expect to hit a fastball.
  • Your target market, you've gotta know who your ideal clients are; who do I want to work with? Who do I do the best work for?
  • Start to look at your messaging; okay, your messaging is what will create clarity, it's gonna create engagement, it's what makes your company memorable and magnetic. Okay. One of the biggest mistakes businesses make when they communicate what they do is focus on them and how great they are, and the problem is our customers; they don't care about us; they care about what we can do for them.
  • 3rd step is your plan - the plan helps you identify when and what you're gonna execute on from a marketing perspective; okay, it gives you a framework that you can follow
  • Marketing plans are a 90-day sprint.

Spending thousands of dollars on this 10, 15, 20-page marketing plan that's in-depth is a waste of time cause they confuse most people, they end up going into a desk drawer, and nobody ever looks at it again.

Marketing plans we use can be on a single page of the paper; there are six steps.

  • To contact Tim Fitzpatrick - the best place is to go to our website, http://www.RialtoMarketing.com. I also put together some resources for your audience that I think will help support what we talked about, so if they go to https://www.rialtomarketing.com/her-business/

We are given an inside look at three women in situations that have broken the spirit and claimed the lives of other women. Because of the anthology Finally Free, I had a sit-down conversation with women that stand ready to share their story of “how I got over,” They have endured.

Valerie C. Thompson knew about generational toxic relationships. Her shout from the rooftop these days is “own your truth and rise!” The advice that she gives is to gain your identity - Pray, meditate, see your transformation, and practice self-care. When you live a dark reality like Valerie, the light opens up insights and she shares actionable steps to healing in her chapter.

Carleeka Basnight- Menendez shines the lite on the life of a woman at odds with food and said, “I hate food.” Can you imagine the chained life that weighs ten times a day, the mental battle that is faced every day, and the day of reckoning, a bony reflection from a mirror, and the life-or-death decision that had to be made? To choose life feels good and Carleeka says “to anyone out there who allows something to keep you sick, silent, and stuck, your time is now to be free.”

Mavis A Creagh tells us “it takes faith, walking boldly, standing tall, and moving forward to truly be free.” Mavis expounds on a litany of incidents that can bind us but answers the flip side with victory! Mavis writes, “FREE from the years of self-sabotage and personal neglect while putting others first.” As the interviewer, I asked myself, how many times have I asked that question! What I appreciate is Mavis’s advice to grab faith, daily reminders of our past will come up, but the application of faith is the difference

It takes making “bad decisions” sometimes to become an empire builder. CPA, MBA, author Ursula Garrett is an empire builder. During this conversation, she reveals growing up poor in the south, being a teen mom, choosing marriage instead of the college scholarship she earned. Ursula joined the military (traded her pumps for combat boots) with becoming an entrepreneur in the seat of her heart! https://www.linkedin.com/in/ursula-garrett/

Blooper alert! The internet dropped Margo’s connection, but the expert carries the show like a pro!

Takeaways

Empire building as you work a job

Ursula took local college courses preparing. As an employee, she stayed for 2 ½ intentional years, long enough to get her CPA license, intentionally work her job, and have a plan.

Two kinds of employees discussed.

1- The person that stays on a job long enough to retire (50’s, the ’60s) the kids are taken care of and out, now it’s time to become an entrepreneur.

2 - The other doesn’t want to work for anyone, but when they do, they expect to make a lot of money with minimal skillset – this person moves from job to job, get rich scheme to another – this employee worries Ursula. They need grounding before becoming an entrepreneur.

While you are an employee, save money! When you get a raise, keep & invest. Wealth and businesses are built systematically.

Plateau to Summit (author Ursula Garrett)

Our guide on how to start a business correctly covers how to operate a business, budget, get along with people. Building begins with a plan (written preferably). The business plan will keep you focused; help you build your core – the seat of your money. Always focus on your core, your mission, purpose, and this is how I am going to get there. Stick with the plan! Have a continuity plan!

Your financials tell the bones of your business and offer ways to fix your business.

It takes time to be an overnight success. It takes planning. Put your total effort into your plan.

Must have systems in place when you cannot do business as usual.

Somebody has to make sure that guided conversations surrounding racism takes place.

Kahlida N Lloyd Esq joined me a while back, explaining her being the Founder & President of Mission Reconcile, a faith-based racial reconciliation nonprofit created to bring together predominantly single race/culture churches to talk about race, racism and create organic relationships through the lens of Jesus. I wanted access to the view of a person facilitating the conversations; one could share the view of Americans linkedin.com/in/kahlidanicole.

Highlights:

What is race reconciliation and conciliation?

What part does the church play in race relations?

All races, backgrounds, coming to your place of reconciliation is not cookie cutter.

Mission Reconcile facilitates a safe place, a common ground intentionally set to encourage honest conversation at single race churches where all are open to having a conversation covering the subject of racism.

Esq Lloyd speaks on what it means to take this faith-based model to colleges, small businesses, organizations for intentional conversations to get maximum results. She is doing this work. Welcome the moments when one identifies to be a racist because this opens the door to a conversation about the mindset.

To call one out denotes I’m Comin to get you, so rather than “call out,” take the responsibility to have a dialogue.

Sheila Farr helps build businesses holistically. Her eternal optimism is a secret sauce, the reason why Gulf Coast Training and Educational Services, LLC, was able to pivot and continue to bring success to her clients during the pandemic.

It takes a team, a coach, a mentor to build and, yes, maintain a successful business. Here are highlights from our conversation, insight into the expertise, the professional standard you should look for when hiring someone to help launch and maintain your business. Contact – website / https://www.gulfcoasttraining.org/

Transcript excerpt highlights:

How Sheila works with her clients:

"I just, I love it when people come to me with an idea,

but they don't know how to get where they want to go. So we just kind of sit down and build a roadmap for

them. And like you said, we kind of look at how they're doing on the inside. You know, are they really ready?

Is this what they really want to do? And do they really understand the commitment to it? Because operating

and owning a business is a huge commitment. It's not just, you know, the cute stuff that you see on

Facebook or social media or in advertising. It's hard work, and it's dirty, and it's, you know, frustrating some

days. So, you know, I just try to work with people and make sure that they're ready to take that step and that we build them up for success.”

How did this building based company expand services in 2020; to service business owners globally and still answer the need to help them grow “from the inside out”?

“So now we're not limited to the Gulf coast. You know, I have people that I'm working with over in Europe and

Australia and all around the US, so it's been just an incredibly exciting time for me, but, you know, when you

look at our list of services that we have, we started with just basic business customer service, medical

type courses that we taught. But now we branched out; we do personnel development, we do business

strategies, we do human resources. We do virtual human resources for people. We even do health and

wellness, and I'm a yoga instructor and Tai Chi instructor.

So, you know, we meet people where they are and provide the services that they need, that, that will really help them be

successful, whether it be a personal journey that they're on or a business journey.”

How to reinvent, find your voice, take your career, business stand these days

“And Margo, you know, this is the age of the expert. Any life lesson that you've had in

education, you have anything that people come to you, and they ask your opinion, or for help a

repeatedly, if people are coming to you and asking you the same question over and over, well, guess what,

you're an expert in that area. You know, if people are coming to you for your opinion and help, you can turn

that into a business online virtually, and you can do things, not just in your community or with your friends.

But I mean, you can do that globally because people now are looking for more people that do have those

experiences that have been through.”

Tell us something about that. An incident that happened to you changed your life early on in your, in your days.

1

00:03:47

Okay. Well, one of the things that that I have to say is I come from a family of faith and it is really my faith that has guided all of this. And it's one thing to, to take on the faith of your parents and your grandparents is many of us have learned that way, but it's one thing to have your own life-changing experiences. So as I, you know, the, your listeners are not able to see me, but you would not know it in seeing me, but I've actually been paralyzed twice. And that was part of my journey. I lost the ability to speak, and you hear me speaking now, but I lost the ability to speak at about the age of 20.

Dr. Rene Minter

00:04:34

I was stricken with Bell's palsy. And at that time Bell's palsy wasn't something that you had medication for. So you just had to ride it through. It was a, somewhat of a, a, a disorder for the elderly. And here I was a 20-year-old and woke up one morning not able to speak. And I remained like that for, for about four or five months. But one of the things that I have learned, one of the things that God has showed me is that you can't have a rainbow without going through a storm. And that every storm that we go through, it's not just for us, but it's for others. So I had a, I had a divine healing, you know, in a church service, which really locked in my own belief system, not just the one from my parents and my grandparents, but that divine healing also gave me a voice.

Dr. Rene Minter

00:05:29

Not only did it give me a literal voice that I had not recognized or heard in four months, but it also gave me a voice for compassion. And I took that to become an advocate. And I had already gone through social work school. So I was already going in that direction, but having lost my voice and being disabled, prohibited me from moving any further. Once I regained my abilities, I was on fire and it never stopped. It never stopped. That was just a short refueling. So, so to speak from the Lord.

Margo Lovett

This is a joint venture. So today, they are demystifying and taking away all of the reasons why you can't write a book.

11m 39s This is huge. I see two things had you decided, well, we don't know how to do this, and there's nothing we can do about it. Let's just fish around and find somebody else who would meet our criteria. No, all didn't do that. No, that was the best thing that could have happened. I hope I hope people caught that, they learned how to do what they wanted to do better. And in return, now you were able you and are able to serve others on quite a high level.

Yvonne has a fab FREE offer: contact me, Yvonne, my name, Yvonne@ Yvonne davita.com. - I have something that I'd be happy to send people. It's called a word by word, page by page. And it's an outline of all of the things that you need to do to write your book. That will help you start getting your head around what needs to happen.

Tom has a major free offer, too - tom@olddoglearning.com. And so that's pretty easy for people who may be interested in it. What I've been working on just recently in what will be coming out in the next few days is a new free ebook that I can send you, or you'll be able to download it. The site it's called pivot learning why, when, and how to change course with purpose.

27m 7s

Tom

And there will be in addition to the free eBook, I'm putting together a package of a workbook and checklists and so on that will be available for, for a small price, but the eBook itself will be free. And it's, it is a great place to start. And you get to know a little bit about my, my way of coming at the change and, and changing course,

Racial reconciliation and conciliation - Esq Kahlida Lloyd explains the difference and why this conversation is necessary. Esq Lloyd facilitates the touchy, timely conversation of racism at churches and organizations. Is America truly ready to dig below the surface? Churches, reconciliation you know about it. How do we bring racial reconciliation (spiritual work we must do) and conciliation (the work we must do as America) together so tomorrow no longer looks like, feels like, at the root is like our past?

Contact - https://www.iamareconciler.org/ - donations accepted to further this work

Takeaways

Mission Reconcile facilitates a safe place, a common ground intentionally set to encourage honest conversation at single race churches where all are open to having a conversation covering the subject of racism

Esq Lloyd speaks on what it means to take this faith-based model to colleges, small businesses, organizations for intentional conversations to get maximum results. She is doing this work.

Welcome the moments when one identifies to be a racist because this opens the door to a conversation about the mindset. To call one out denotes I’m Comin to get you so rather than “call out” take the responsibility to have a dialogue

Entrepreneur Nicholas Hinrichsen is telling you (better listen) – 2020 is not a wash but an opportunity! A takeaway from our conversation – online tech is where your “North Star” should point – start, do something!

Nicholas Hinrichsen - Linkedin Profile

Nicholas just launched With Clutch Refinance your car and lower your monthly payments

Don't be discouraged short term no customers revenue whether think long term be on the right path have the right North Star then it will all take care of itself the company will grow

Nicholas Hinrichsen (a business student at Stanford) & his friend Chris formed a company; they helped classmates sell their cars. These two gents detailed the cars, photos taken, and posted on Craigslist! The momentum of the business caught the professor's attention, and they wanted to invest in Chris & Nicholas’s business! Needless to say, these two entrepreneurs became a case study and still are at Stanford

How they became a part of the rocket ship Carvana

Chris & Nicholas compared notes, started a conversation with the competition Carvana which was a fast-growing business. Carvana found that Chris and Nicholas already had the technology that they sought, Chris and Nick Nicholas were looking to expand, thus Chris, Nicholas and their team moved from a medium-sized company to the rocket ship Ferrari Carvana, and stayed on for three years

What Nicholas is working on now

Dealers don't give you the best car loan They give you the one that pays him or her the highest referral fee. Building a digital platform that allows you to refinance your car loan is what Nicholas is working on these days.

Nicholas Hinrichsen - LinkedIn Profile

Takeaways from our conversation

As an interviewer, I made their Seven years in the car business sound like stair steps, in reality, it was a crazy rollercoaster time going from being ecstatic to the next moment convinced they would have to shut their doors this won't work .per Nicholas this was an overnight success seven years in the making .every entrepreneur struggles most of the time and one day wakes up to a massive business, and then realizes it has worked but it was a hard way

Don't overthink when starting your business take action, Do something, get started, customers, will tell you what they want. Learn what's valuable to people, put yourself out there.

Fear -it's not unusual to feel that the business is not working Nicholas said it never felt like it was working it was a rollercoaster .they modified their business model from peer to peer and began making cars available to people through technology, this version of the business model started growing a lot

Happy customers are most powerful for small businesses, they are loyal they share their experience. when you are a small company you can talk to the customer you can talk to and delight your customers

Dee Woolridge (clinical hypnotherapist, lightworker) tells us how to stay balanced in an ever-changing world. Resilience can no longer be a foreign distant word because it's tested a lot these days! Some more often than others but we all have our limits. Resilience is the ability to bounce back; how quickly, how we look, act, move when we get back up (like a kid's punching bag) measures our resilience.

Some people are tired. Change, not knowing what your normal state is anymore affects our resilience. We take on holes and must figure out how to patch the hole, fill up again with what we need rather than push through, press past over and over. Sound like you? Dee is giving away a FREE workshop & workbook that will check anxiety levels and make other assessments, teach techniques to work through stress and change.

https://workshop.deewoolridge.com/

To obtain her books - https://deethespeaker.com/books/

3 main takeaways

Dee Woolridge is giving all listeners a full workshop that she normally charges her clients to have access to - https://workshop.deewoolridge.com/

You have to let go of the old stuff to open up the door to what's new and beautiful in front of you - start creating that new thing.

Accept change and keep a hopeful outlook. "Hope in God."
