ProtegoCast is an animal rights in the Wizarding World exploration podcast from the first, and only Harry Potter-inspired animal rights charity, the Protego Foundation!
The Protego Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to ending the abuse of creatures in the muggle world using messages from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series. We strive to create a wizarding fandom that is more considerate of the rights, feelings, and treatment of all creatures regardless of species, size, or magical ability.
In ProtegoCast, we will discuss animal rights messages in Wizarding World franchise, talk about our views on veganism and animal rights, and even host some very special magical guests!
In this week’s episode, Brittany, Kathryn, and special guest Tylor Starr reminisce about 10 years of helping animals with The Protego Foundation! Then, they are joined by new co-hosts for season 4, Melanie Aarnio and Nicole Hering, to talk about what might be in store for Team Protego for the future. Tune in to hear:

ProtegoCast Season 3 Episode 8 - Hogwarts Legacy and the Treatment of Animals in Video Games
In this week’s episode, Brittany, Valerie, and Jess discuss the newest game in the Wizarding World franchise and how it ranks in terms of its depictions of animals and their rights. Tune in to hear:
An important disclaimer: We at The Protego Foundation believe that Transgender women are women. Transgender men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary. Intersex people exist and should not be forced to live in the binary. We stand with Harry Potter fans in these communities, and we disavow the author’s anti-trans rhetoric and beliefs. So today, we are only considering this particular property with regard to its implications for animals and animal rights, particularly in the fandom. This discussion should not be seen as an endorsement for the purchase of this game.

Also in this episode:
Can you think of other dark magical creatures in the Harry Potter series? How do you think we can better encourage the protection and care of creatures in the muggle world many would consider dangerous and fearsome?

"I was just so pleased that he thought about it and pleased that I had the answer," Rowling told The Canadian Press.
These evil creatures don't, by the way, breed but grow like a fungus where there is decay.

Cornelius Fudge in Half Blood Prince:
[Here Fudge claims Dementors do breed, implying they’re not simply ‘non-beings’, but Fudge could well be wrong - he’s not the most reliable of characters!]
"I thought dementors guard the prisoners in Azkaban," he said cautiously.
"They did," said Fudge wearily. "But not anymore. They've deserted the prison and joined He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. I won't pretend that wasn't a blow."
"But," said the Prime Minister, with a sense of dawning horror, "didn't you tell me they're the creatures that drain hope and happiness out of people?"
"That's right. And they're breeding. That's what's causing all this mist."
In this week’s episode, Tylor, Jordan and Emma are joined by Ali Matthews, the Finance and Development Director of the Protego Foundation, to talk more about exploitation-first language, a topic discussed previously in Episode 3 of ProtegoCast, and which Ali is currently writing her thesis on! The team discusses how language influences behaviour, and what we can do to make our language more compassionate.
Also in this episode:
Can you think of other examples of exploitation-first language in the Harry Potter series?

Welcome, witches, wizards, and magical folk, to the first episode of ProtegoCast!
In this episode, Tylor, Jordan, and Emma speak about the brightest witch of her age, Hermione Granger, and her role in defending magical creatures. We are joined by The Protego Foundation’s close friend - and campaign partner - Christina Maki Linville, CEO and Founder of Accio! Box, the world’s first fully vegan Wizarding World subscription box!
Christina joins us to speak about her animal rights journey, the creation of Accio! Box and Tylor’s hand in the box turning fully vegan, and Accio! Box’s role in The Protego Foundation’s ‘Find Dougal’ campaign. Christina is a huge fan of Harry Potter, of course, and you’ll want to stay tuned as we move into a discussion on what we can learn from Hermione Granger as an activist, how S.P.E.W could have been better, and what it means to be an activist!
