Kent Collins grew up as a Monster Kid, feeding his haunted head a steady diet of Universal Monsters and DC comics through the late 1970's and early 1980's. And then horror slashed its way into his life in a big way when he saw FRIDAY THE 13th and SLEEPAWAY CAMP. Kent and I kept showing up at the same events this past year or two, so I decided it was time to make a proper introduction from one monster kid to another. Following 1968's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, George A. Romero directed a pair of non-horror films (THE AFFAIR and SEASON OF THE WITCH) that have either eluded or underwhelmed longtime fans who preferred the darker and gruesome later work he is most known for. But in 1973 George Romero completed THE CRAZIES, a film steeped in chaos and fear. THE CRAZIES tells a story of contagion in a small community, the effect it has on the townspeople as it spreads and the struggle against military forces who try to contain and eradicate the threat. One of Romero's early "dark horse" films! Also a discussion of the 2010 remake of TEH CRAZIES, and a remembrance of DAWN OF THE DEAD's David Emge. Whether it was one of his many appearances on television, or one of the many genre films he did in the late 70's and early 80's, Christopher George left an indelible mark in television and film. In much the same way that actor Robert Forster brought a believable everyman quality to a variety of roles, Christopher George was able to slip comfortably from drama to action and horror in a way that made him relatable, and the material believable. He was a rugged, handsome, charismatic actor who elevated every project he appeared in. He should be held in the same regard as actors like Roy Scheider, Robert Forster and Lance Henriksen. Though his body of work included war films, comedies, sci-fi and action, for episode #93 we will focus on the prison drama, nature-run-amok, vigilante justice, zombie apocalypse, classic slasher, ninja and occult films he did from 1973-1983. Frank Henenlotter’s films are hard to nail down. They’re not conventional horror films so much as they are bizarre dramas featuring extreme (and often fantastical) physical deformity, addiction, sex, violence and bloodshed. All filtered through a darkly comic lens. In much the same way David Cronenberg’s films are not for everyone, the same could be said for Frank Henenlotter’s films. Dennis Churchill Dries and his bandmates in White Sister emerged from the early 80's Los Angeles rock scene alongside the likes of Motley Crue, Ratt, Metallica and 45 Grave. They flirted with success on EMI Records, had songs featured in the films Fright Night, Halloween 5 and Thrashin', and later signed to Atlantic Records as Tattoo Rodeo. And then they disappeared. While they never achieved the commercial success of their peers, they became a legend in the melodic rock genre. This is their story, straight from the heart.
In the early days of thrash metal there arose a handful of bands who brought the genre to the masses - among them Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus and Overkill. Metallica was to become the biggest of them all, but following close behind was Megadeth, formed by former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine. Metallica and Megadeth have each had successful careers, carving out legacies which have forever shaped metal music. Along the way there have been triumphs, tragedies and rivalries. Many metal fans love both bands, but some favor one over the other. His voice has graced albums by peers Lita Ford & Stryper, and soundtracks for films such as Rock Star. He was the voice of Journey on their massive 2006 US tour with Def Leppard.
