One of my favorite speakers and authors is my guest today. Karen Eman is a New York Times Best-selling author and speaker with Proverbs 31 Ministries, where I first heard her speak many years ago. Hospitality and making people feel loved and seen is one of her specialities, and she shares about this in her new book Reach Out, Gather In: 40 Days to Opening Your Heart and Home. On the show, we talk about how hospitality impacted her as a teenager and how she valued it in her home raising her kids. She is a fellow Great Lakes northern gal and I know you'll love her wisdom and stories! You can find more of Karen at and on all the socials.
With only weeks left before the 2020 elections, I'm thrilled to bring this important episode with author, speaker and scholar Kaitlyn Schiess. Her new book The Liturgy of Politics is a must-read for people of faith and people who are needing more grounding in their faith as they navigate life in the politically charged and divided climate of America. Christians often prefer to be "apolitical" or believe that their faith is free of any political influence. Kaitlyn disagrees and demonstrates how the church is shaped by the political climate in which it exists and how to incorporate spiritual practices that will help shape our politics. It's a fascinating conversation and I hope you get her book! She also has supplemental resources on her website www.kaitlynschiess.com

We are collectively experiencing something that our generation has never seen. Our lives have come to a halt and nothing is "normal" anymore. While it is critical that we pursue physical health and safety, it is just as crucial to maintain good mental health. In this episode, licensed therapist and ordained priest, Janis Sharpe, shares a multitude of tips that will help us avoid depression and anxiety. From Janis Sharpe… Tips for staying emotionally healthy while in self quarantine: We are living in an unprecedented time. With each update on the Corona virus most people are struggling with anxiety and some with depression. Knowing that you are going to be home alone or with family is increasing the anxiety. Feeling out of control, having your routine disrupted and being in close quarters with family can cause small irritations to seem huge! Here are a few tips that will help you stay emotionally healthy during this time. 1. Remember this is temporary- this too will pass. We don’t know how long it will be so, take each day as it comes and find ways to enjoy each day. 2. Stay in contact with family and friends- particularly by phone calls, Skype, Zoom, FaceTime. Limit texting. Texting is much more impersonal, talking on the phone or on FaceTime feels more like real connection. 3. Get up, shower and get dressed everyday. If your hair is dirty, wash it. Even if you aren’t going to see anyone, you will feel better. 4. Listen to positive music, watch positive TV shows and movies. Avoid shows, books or music that cause you to feel depressed or anxious. 5. Use relaxation apps such as Calm or Headspace to help you relax. 6. Exercise- (if you do regularly) Sure, it’s not your gym with all the equipment, but you can do pushups, sit ups, jump rope. There are so many exercise videos online. 7. Get outside for 30 minutes a day if possible without contact with others (Walking or running as long as you stay 6 feet from others). Even if you don’t exercise, go out on your porch or patio if possible. 8.Do yoga or stretching- again, you can find some online. 9. Limit social media. Yes, it is a way to connect, but has shown that it also can be very fear, anger or anxiety producing. 10. Journal- express the emotions you are feeling. I recommend an old spiral notebook so you can be real and tear out pages and throw them away. 11. Express physical touch with people you are isolated with. (Assuming they do not have C0-Vid. 12. Set daily goals- could be to clean out a closet or to bing watch a season of Friends but just making a plan can help you think more positively. 13. Go in denial in safe ways- a specific time of day that you will watch the news, then focus on something more uplifting. Take notifications off your phone that send you updates. 14. Do square breathing to lesson anxiety. Breath in to the count of four, hold your breath for four counts, exhale for four counts, hold your breath again for four counts. Use apps, such as Calm to help you relax. 15. Use this time to focus on your spiritual life. Pray, try new types of prayer- use devotional apps online: the Daily office, Streams in the Desert, or My Utmost for His Highest. Consider meditating on a scripture a day. Be still and know that He is God.

In the faith tradition I grew up in, there really was no place for a theology of suffering and pain. It was something that was to be prayed away or never occur in the first place. People hid suffering or felt shame around it, feeling they maybe their faith was insufficient or there was some unconfessed sin in their life that hindered healing. That belief system has grew more and more troublesome to me until I threw it out altogether years ago. There is something mysterious that happens in suffering and in pain, a connection with Jesus that perhaps cannot be found in other ways. My friend Kaysie Steele has experienced tremendous emotional and physical suffering throughout her life, yet her journey with Jesus has grown deeper and richer through it. Today, she shares beautifully about the suffering she experienced as a child of an alcoholic father and the suffering she currently endures due to chronic back pain. It will inspire and nourish your soul for sure. Kaysie's blog is She references the following in our conversation. From Seth Haines' forward in the book: "Through sexual trauma, encounters with racism, the loss of a child, and mental health issues, Alia shares her suffering with such sensorial artistry that you cannot help but enter in. What do you think of when you hear the words infidelity or adultery? Most assume it's a man who was the perpetrator. Many assume that it is a death sentence for a marriage (or death for the spouse if it ever happened to them!) Most imagine that forgiveness and mercy would be impossible; trust and intimacy could never truly be restored. Even Jesus said adultery was a legit pass to get out of a marriage, right? On the show today, Shannon Geurin shares about how she walked through the pain of betrayal in her marriage eleven years ago, however, she was the offender. She had believed the lie that she no longer wanted her husband and had found true love in another. After confessing to her husband, her plan was to leave him and their girls for a life with elsewhere. But, God... Today, Shannon and her husband John are living a fully restored marriage and love story as a result of grace, commitment, and a lot of hard work on both sides. Shannon's mission is to help women rise up from the pain and brokenness of their mistakes and realize their worth and value to God, to understand that they are fiercely His. When Carrie first dated her husband Eric, she became an avid student of his character. She wanted to know everything about him to determine whether he would be safe to entrust with her heart and future children. In the same way, she has studied the character of Jesus, learning about his desire to protect and provide for us, his compassion and empathy towards humanity, and his great power. All of these convinced her that he was truly trustworthy. In her book, "The Compelling Heart of Christ" Carrie uses her lens of understanding the loving character of Jesus to better understand some significant stories in the Bible. Today, she shares about how these characters have parallels in her own life and how this study of Jesus has deepened her trust in him. Her mom, Carrie Kittinger, is one of my dearest friends. You can meet her in episode "Defining Moments" from season 1 of the podcast.
I have always had a fascination for personality tests, and the Myers Briggs Indicator has been the granddaddy of them all for decades. My friend Jewel Kaste (meet her in Episode 4 of the podcast) has been diving deep into the MBTI for decades and is the perfect guest to share a clear and practical description of the traits and how they affect our lives in practical ways. So fun! Jewel's recommendations: "Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type" by Isabel Briggs Myers "Please Understand Me: Character and Temperament Types" by David Keirsey "Nurture by Nature: Understand Your Child's Personality Type: by Paul D Tieger www.thepersonalitypage.com
Wouldn't it be great to really know that we could hear God speaking to us? We often doubt that He speaks to us and that we are actually hearing Him. How does He speak? How can you know it's Him? My guest today is my friend and ministry teammate, Ashley Grice. As a learning differences specialist, Ashley has cultivated an intimate relationship with God in a way that allows her to hear His voice in multiple ways. In this episode, we discuss the different ways that the LORD speaks to us and how to discern that it's Him.

Today my friend Mia Chasteen shares some highlights from her life-changing trip to Israel. She and her son travelled with a group from his high school last year to experience the land of the Bible first hand. Her two weeks there has changed the way she reads the Scriptures as she visualizes the scenes and applies new cultural awareness to passages. Her enthusiasm is contagious and will inspire us all to put Israel on our bucket list!

To contact Scarlet for speaking or to learn more about her, go to scarletpepin.com
Recently we experienced a house fire, something I thought only happened to other people. We have been blown away by the outpouring of love we have received from the body of Christ during this stressful time. I wanted to take time to share somethings I've learned after this trauma and express my gratitude to everyone for their support.
My dear friend Leah Marshall rejoins me on this episode to talk about one of our favorite things...food! Food was meant to be savored and shared. God created it for more than simple nourishment for our bodies; it is meant to be experienced. It is a catalyst for community, a joint effort between God and humanity, and a source of joy. In this episode, we share about our fun food experiences on our birthday road trip/cruise, food memories, the satisfaction that good food and fellowship brings, as well as our favorite foods here in the Tulsa area. This was such a fun one to do! We reference the following in this episode: Lone Wolf, Laffa, Antoinette's Baking Co, China Garden, India Palace, Tandoori Guys, Rose Rock Creamery, Jinya, Shawkat's Bakery, Umberto's Pizza, Mandarin Taste, Wild Fork, Oceana (New Orleans), Cafe du Monde (New Orleans), Mama's Fried Chicken (Opelousas, LA), The Turquoise Table by Kristin Schell, A Meal with Jesus by Tim Chester, Jen Hatmaker's "For the Love Podcast: For the love of food: Ep 03: Melissa D'Arabian"
iRefresh Ministries was birthed out of a message Sheryl Kloehr heard back in 1982. She had a vision of ministering to and praying for women around the world. In this conversation, Sheryl shares the role her mom played in her vision, how she models her walk with Christ to her kids, and how a dream can sometimes turn out differently that we first imagine. Her heart for promoting others and seeing them fulfill what God has called them to will definitely nourish your soul!

I don't know many people who are looking for 2017 to be over more than my friend Lori Kroh. This has been a year of hardship and heartache, as I'm sure it has been for many. Despite the challenges, Lori is one of the most upbeat and inspiring women I know. She loves people, family, creating and "junking". I'm sure this conversation with her will be encouraging as she shares about using her giftings to serve and uplift others. Kristi Davis is not your typical mom and wife! Although she loves those roles, a yearning she has had from high school has been to work in law enforcement in some capacity. She never knew it would be in the form of ministering to officers and inmates. If that wasn't enough, another ministry she is passionate about is ministering to strippers in the local clubs. Terrified that God would send her to a faraway mission field, she never dreamed that her mission field would be right in her own community, serving those who are underserved on both sides of the law. She is truly as beautiful on the inside as she is outside. Prepare to be nourished!! Hattie Vance is one of my favorite people on the planet. I first heard her story a few years ago at a retreat, and she captured my heart immediately. Although her story is full of addiction, heartbreak, and prison, the greatest part is the redemption of God. Hattie shares honestly about the painful parts of her past, but the mercy and grace of God is a constant current throughout. Today, she and her husband Joe lead Celebrate Recovery in their community in Arkansas and continue to minister to incarcerated men and women, giving them hope and tools to succeed in Christ.
Holly Tumpkin and I met our freshman year of college in the dorms at ORU. Our lives went in different directions, but our paths crossed again several years ago and we've been journeying together in our pursuit of God's calling on our lives. Holly's experience as a mom of three girls led her to have a heart and ministry that helps ground girls in who they are. This is Holly's story of answering God's call on her life and how she relied on him when the curveballs came, one of them being brain cancer. Two years after her diagnosis and surgery, Holly has picked up her calling for Girls 101 again and she's on fire! www.girls101.org email Holly at holly@girls101.org photo cred: Jadyn Winn
I met Terri Paxton through a former guest on the podcast, Tammy Houghton (episode 28). Within five minutes of our first conversation on the phone, I fell in love with Terri! She has a beautiful heart for her family and the Lord. I instantly responded to her honesty and willingness to lay down her own desires for God's best. Little did she know that when she released her son to move to India as a missionary, her life would be changed in ways beyond her wildest imagination. Eventually, Terri and her husband would have the honor of funding the building of a children's home in India where the lives of 25 kids would be changed forever. This story will inspire you like crazy!!
What started as her project for a class, Bri Hoyt created an amazing international movement called the Two Cents Project. Her original intention was to express love to the homeless population of Charlotte, NC, but it developed into so much more. Her heart is to help people, especially youth, be part of loving the poor as Christ does. Her story is unconventional and surprising and absolutely inspiring!
Ashley Cross is the founder and executive director of Launch Outreach, whose mission is "to see youth excel through higher education, strong morals and ethics, and practical living skills." Having been part of a family that fostered and cared for kids her whole life and after visiting an orphanage in Brazil on a college missions trip, she knew she wanted to dedicate her life to helping young women who have been part of the foster care system be all that they were created to be. Her passion became reality when she shared a home with four girls after graduating from college. Her dream and vision sparked in others and now Launch Outreach has three prongs of service--Manna House (a group home for young women, Heaven's Keys (a jewelry business run by the women), and the Empowerment Center (a place for youth to graduate and learn life skills). This amazing woman blew me away with her devotion and passion for youth. Prepare to be inspired!! To find out more about these programs and how to volunteer or support Launch Outreach, go to www.freetolaunch.com The beautiful handmade Heaven's Keys necklaces can be purchased on their website as well.
The first attempt at this podcast with my dear friend Joan Stuehm somehow got partially deleted. So, she graciously let me come over one night to re-record it. When I went to go edit it together with the original, something else got deleted! It's taken me a couple of months to get back on the horse and try it a third time. Another portion had "disappeared" but after digging through my files, I was able to relocate it and splice it all together!! For some reason, this message is clearly a threat!! It's been a great opportunity for me to press on even when things are not perfect or easy. But, the work that Joan and her friends are doing is important Kingdom work, so I knew I had to make it work. Joan faced a new chapter in her life when she was facing being an empty-nester. A dedicated and involved mom in each of her three daughters' lives, she started to lose her way a bit as she struggled to find purpose. In her routine of getting her nails done, the LORD whispered something in heart about loving others and the LAVISH movement was born. In this episode, Joan shares how it all began, and a few of her collaborators join us in the second half. I know you'll be inspired when you hear the love and joy that these women receive from giving to others in a crazy, generous way.
Lisa Goins is an amazing renaissance woman! She is mom of four grown children, entrepreneur, realtor, co-pastor Faith Church in Tulsa, OK, with her husband Kelly, and champion of others. Throughout our conversation, you'll hear "how did I get here?" numerous times in her story. Lisa is a woman who decided to say no to her fears and perceived limitations and has become a successful business owner and communicator of truth. Her story will inspire you to dream big and push yourself beyond your comfort zone. You'll want to stay tuned to the end for a special treat from Lisa just for NOURISH listeners! Tammy Houghton is owner of the south Tulsa women's boutique, Purse-a-nality. At a recent women's event, I heard her share a beautiful testimony and I knew I had to have her on the podcast. A small offense from a friend was allowed to fester, and days turned in to weeks and then months and then over a year. Avoiding a hard conversation had destroyed a friendship and built a wall around her heart. But, the Lord wasn't going to let things stay that way. I know you'll be nourished and inspired by Tammy's life and her obedience to the Father. You can find Purse-a-nality on facebook and at purseanalitytulsa on Instagram.
I had the best conversation with my sweet friend Anna Lukes. Anna is the CFO of her family's company, a licensed drug and alcohol therapist, and leads the young adult group at her church. She has a passion for seeing sons and daughters return to the family of God, and her understanding of the Kingdom of God is transforming. I had the best time digging deep with her about being citizens of the Kingdom. Note: During our conversation, I refer to a podcast by Emily P. Freeman called "The Next Right Thing". -Neighborstable.com
My friend and ministry teammate, Monica Epperson, is my guest today. Monica is an adjunct professor at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, author and speaker, and co-founder of The Child of Divorce, a nonprofit for children of divorce, which was recently acquired by ChristianWorks for Children of Dallas-Ft.Worth, TX. Her story is one of God's redemption from abuse, multiple divorces among her parents, and unhealthy patterns that she carried into adult and her own marriage. Monica has a passion for Jesus, the Word of God and helping coach others into healthy relationships with God, themselves and others. You'll most definitely be inspired by her story and insights. My guest today is longtime friend, the energetic, life-loving, never-know-what-she's-gonna-say Martha Weldon. You never know whose life you may impact without even realizing it. Martha and I were sitting in a history class at university when I mentioned getting a masters degree in TESL (teaching English as a second language). She'd never been out of the country before and her ears perked up. She went on to get her masters degree and live and work in multiple countries around the world, all after she was in her fifties! She's also been heeding a call to write children's books through the eyes of her cats, revealing how fun God is. This episode will leave you smiling and inspired for sure! Martha can be reached for speaking engagements at her website: meweldon.com Her fb support group is Treasures in Heaven.
The light that is Lisa Bain founded the charity "Joy in the Cause" during a time when most people would be at their lowest moments. Her mother's five-year battle with cancer birthed a beautiful movement that is rooted in choosing joy in every situation. Joy in the Cause and its off-shoots, the Purpose Project, Joy to the Rescue and Joy in the Adventure, brings hope and light to individuals, young and old, who are facing traumatic situations. Lisa's sidekick, Mavis Pearl, a six-year-old, tutu-wearing English Bulldog, ministers love and joy to countless kids and adults daily. No small act of kindness is ever wasted, and Joy in the Cause is a great place to get plugged in to give joy to others. I know Lisa's story and inspiring words will nourish you today. www.joyinthecause.org
Award-winning teacher Annmarie Wright has many passions--literature, travel, the persecuted church, history, Mr. Darcy, just to name a few. She and I met while we were undergraduates in college, studying in the same degree. She, however, went in one direction, and I in another. This week she is beginning her 26th year of teaching at the same high school, and actually still LOVES what she does. That passion has translated into success in her classroom and impacting thousands of students over the years. Annmarie loves teaching and uses that gift in such an inspiring way. I know you'll be nourished as you listen to our conversation about how she makes history come alive, shares wisdom for interacting with teenagers, and shares her passion for the persecuted church.
I caught up with Sarah Lout recently while she was on a home visit in the US from Kinshasha in the Dem. Republic of Congo. She teaches at an international school there, while her husband Scott serves as the country director for World Vision. Having both been been raised as missionary kids in Africa, the Louts have a clear understanding of what it takes to create a healthy environment for their third culture kids. They have lived in 5 countries over the past 11 years. You'll enjoy hearing how they got started, how they maintain their sanity and healthy relationships, and how they lean on the LORD in every adventure.
I'm a firm believer that everyone has a story worth sharing, and Anna's is no exception. This incredible young woman experienced a loss that no little girl should. Father God has proven Himself to be more faithful than she ever imagined. You will be nourished for sure as you listen to this bright young millenial and her beautiful testimony.
I have loved every one of my guests on the podcast, but my time with Kirsten LaCourse was so beautiful and the presence of the LORD was so precious. Kirsten was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, something that was completely unexpected. How she and her family responded to the news, how they and friends supported her through treatment, and how her faith grew even deeper will truly inspire you. I was so nourished after my time with her and I know you will be too.

This week I'm flying solo and share with you about my experience in a completely different culture right in my own city. The LORD reminded me of the importance of caring for the "alien" or "other" in my land, and how when we care for them, we are caring for him.
Each of us has a unique story in God's story. So often we think our stories are insignificant or unworthy of sharing because of the pain or shame that so often accompanies them. But, the truth is, God wants to redeem our stories and show them to us from His perspective. There is grace and beauty and value in each of them. Holly Beitel is president of TRUE Stories Ministries, a ministry that uses a tool called storyrope to help women explore their stories in a beautiful way. It has had a profound impact on my life and I have served with her and our team for several years now bringing storyrope events to women of all ages. With her husband's full support, she sacrificed all that the world would consider important in order to be with her little guy. The sacrifices continued as she decided to enrich her son's life with world travel. I know you'll be inspired as you listen to my conversation with Leah about her choices and the riches that her sacrifices have brought to her family.

Caroline Frame had a dream of going to Broadway to sing and perform. That got set on the shelf when she got married young and started her family of 5 children. But the dream never died. She had no idea that God would use her gifts and passion to ignite the same gifts and passions in dozens of young people. Courtyard Theatre was born out of her willingness to serve kids and love for musical theater.
Blogger Abi Spencer and I discuss how critical it is to be grounded in our identities as daughters of God.
NOURISH is a podcast to encourage, inspire, and nourish women's souls and spirits. With so much negativity, toxicity, and stress in the world around us, I hope to provide content that is "nutrient-rich" in order for women to thrive in life. In Philippians 4:8, Paul advises us to think about things that are true, noble, and admirable. Through inspiring interviews and upbeat conversations, NOURISH will provide an opportunity to "think on these things."
