I have a scenario question for you:

You realize that you have a deadline coming due, and you need to print out a large banner advertisement, but your printer can only print 8.5" x 11" (standard letter size paper) or 8.5" x 14" (legal size paper). Perhaps you need to print out a large blueprint, but you realize that it will not fit onto letter size or legal-size paper.

What do you do?

Do you print out your advertisement on separate letter-sized pages and use a glue-stick or a stapler to connect them? Maybe you can print out your blueprint on a letter size page and a legal-size page and just staple them together? I truly hope your answer to both questions would be a resounding "NO"!

What you need to have is a printer that will allow you to print out in Wide-Format, which you can use for not only printing out your banner advertisements and your blueprints, but one that will also allow you to print in large, borderless format, as well as printing in high-quality for all of your needs, including photos, documents, and more!

That brings us to the topic of our discussion today, wide-format printing. I have had the pleasure of reviewing the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7310 Wireless Wide-format Printer, and I am happy to share the results of the tests I have done with the "WF-7310", and at the end, I will provide you with the detailed technical specifications (the "specs").

First Impressions:

The one thing you will notice about the WF-7310 is the size and weight of the unit. It is quite a hefty device, but one that feels like it could "take a punch", in other words, it is durable, and it is built to handle large print jobs!

Epson did not take any chances for damage that can occur during shipping and transit; this is a very well-protected printer, with an abundance of packing material, and blue safety tape in all locations. Just when you think you have removed all of it, you will still find more. It is imperative to locate and remove all of this tape first.

In the box, along with the printer, you will find an instruction manual, a CD-ROM for set-up, as well as a power cord. Additionally, it comes with the ink cartridges that it requires to print with, which are "DURABRite", and the colors included are black and the standard three colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow).

Before you begin setting up the Epson WF-7310, you will notice a few things at first glance:

The WF-7310 has two paper trays in the front, which can hold 250-sheets per tray (500-sheet paper capacity), and with that amount of capacity, you know that this printer is ready for your heaviest of workloads! The output tray can hold up to 125-sheets and opens (and retracts) automatically when printed pages come out, which is a really neat option, because there have been several times that I forgot to open an output tray on a printer, and then I wind up chasing printed pages as they slide across the floor!
Additionally, the WF-7310 also has a rear feed, which allows you to print on specialty paper that you may need to use for your project(s).

Setting Up The Epson WF-7310

Once you have removed all of that elusive blue tape, plug in the power cord, and turn on the WF-7310. The unit turns on quite fast, and there is not a lot of waiting time, at all.

In my opinion, the first thing that jumped out at me when it was powered up is the gorgeous, sharp, brilliant color 2.4" adjustable display, that we will use to navigate around the WF-7310 and to get it configured. You can tilt or adjust the LCD screen until it is at the most comfortable angle for you to begin.

As mentioned earlier, there is a guide that comes with the printer, showing you the step-by-step procedure to add the ink cartridges, paper, etc., but all of these steps are so intuitively arranged within menus on the LCD Screen, as you proceed with set up.

The next step is to add the ink cartridges that come with the unit, and it is highly suggested that you shake each cartridge before installing it, and you must remove the piece of tape before fitting it into its designated slot. You can install the cartridges, but if you forget to remove that piece of tape, it will not print. I got distracted for a moment when doing this step, so trust me on this one!

Once the cartridges are installed, it takes about 4 or 5 minutes for what I call the printer "making friends" with the new cartridges (on a more technical note, I think it is charging up the ink for usage). Once this charging of the ink is completed, you will then move on to paper selection, which is as simple as selecting the paper size you want to print on, and then removing the paper cassette/paper tray in the front, moving the tabs in order to place the paper inside of the cassette, adding in the paper size you have selected, and putting the loaded cassette back into the printer.

Once you have added the ink and the paper, your next step will be to install the software and start printing!

In the box that the WF-7310 comes in, there is a CD that you can use for set up, or, you have the option of navigating to the Epson website, which you will find in the documentation that is also in the box. This is the option that I selected, and downloaded the required drivers, as well as the utilities/software. Once I had all of this downloaded, I began the installation, which is intuitive and very easy to follow. I might have done this a little out of order, just due to the fact that I have a technical background, but at some point during the installation, I connected the printer to my Wi-Fi network, which was really quick and painless. I did this using the LCD screen on the printer, and when I went to the Wi-Fi connectivity screen, it picked up my available Wi-Fi networks. I then selected the network I wanted to use, and then entered my Wi-Fi password, and the printer was then accessible on my Wi-Fi. Due to my own set-up, I gave the WF-7310 a dedicated IP on my router, but that is outside the scope of this review, and is more on the side of my "inner geek"!

Once the printer is on your Wi-Fi, and your computer is able to see it during the driver/software installation, you are in a good place! From that point forward, the real fun of testing can begin!

Testing the Speed of the WF-7310

The WF-7310 uses a heat-free technology, called "PrecisionCore", that allows you to do some pretty fast printing, whether you are printing in all black or in color. My first step here was to test out and see if we could match the claim of 25 pages per minute (25 PPM) of black text and 12 pages per minute (12 PPM) of color text. I had two different documents that were perfect for this; an all-black text services contract of 20 pages, and several color text pages from a advertising run that my company did (I pulled theses color pages together into a single document of 10 pages).

As I sent each print job, I kept track using the stopwatch function on my phone, and the results were as follows:

For the 20-page all-black text print job, it took 49 seconds to print, and given the 25 PPM claim, this was extremely close enough to call it a success in hitting that mark.

For the 10-page color text print job that I sent, it took 52 seconds, and given the 12 PPM claim, this, too, was close enough to call a success. During both jobs, printing was effortless, and the WF-7310 was relatively quiet while rendering both jobs.

How about the Quality of the Print Jobs?

Both print jobs came out in bold, sharp, and gorgeous text. For the sake of the review, I used a small magnifying glass that I had in my desk drawer to look at the text up close, and it really was sharp! I noticed that the ink on both print jobs was instantly dry, with no smears or smudges visible, even with the magnifying glass I used. Sometimes when you print, the previous page can bleed onto the next printed page that lands on top of it, but this did not happen with the WF-7310, which is fantastic!

I also wanted to comment on the color, and just how perfect it was, because the text in the color print job I sent did not just use the basic colors, and some of the text were shades and mixes of colors, and the WF-7310 captured these nuances perfectly!

Going a step further, I had a document filled with several color images within a diagram of networking equipment, and I sent this job through to see the quality of images in print jobs, and I found the quality and the sharpness of these images to be uncanny! I would certainly say that if I printed this document at a local print shop, they could not have printed it any sharper and any more precise than the WF-7310. Once again, I am saying this after using my handy magnifying glass once again!

I can further back up this comment, because I sent a photo that I had on my computer to the printer, using the glossy print paper I had, and it came out perfectly. Once I clipped the edges off the photo, I would have a hard time distinguishing the difference between printing on the WF-7310, or having a 3rd party printing service print out the photo. Yes, it is just that good!

For my last test, I had a server room blueprint for a current project for my job, and this document is a wide-format document, which should print out and measure about 11" x 16". I had plain paper that was 11" x 17", which I loaded into the cassette and sent the print job, which printed exactly as I had hoped with the proper measurement/size. In order to print this blueprint on a printer without the wide-format option, I would normally need to print it on 2 pages of letter size and connect them (which is completely unprofessional, as you can imagine!).

Mobile Printing

With the WF-7310, you have the option of printing wirelessly from your smart phone. In order to do this, you simply need to download the Epson Smart Panel App from your App Store (i.e. Google Play). Once you have downloaded the app, and have connected to your printer, you can send print jobs to the WF-7310 effortlessly. Personally, once I configured my Android with the app, I sent an E-mail to the WF-7310, and it printed quickly and perfectly, just like the print jobs I sent from my computer earlier during this review.

Summary

Overall, I found the WF-7310 to be a powerful and precise tool to help me stay on top of the print jobs that I need to complete. I found that being able to change the paper settings across a variety of different sizes was incredibly helpful.

Further, I did notice that there was an option to print without any borders..."borderless"...up to some pretty large sizes, but even though I did not use this option, as it is not relevant to my daily print jobs, it still is a great feature to have, especially for advertisements and banners.

If someone asked me if I could say anything negative about the WF-7310, I really could not point to anything specifically. I did have a small issue with the ink cartridges, but that was really on me, because I failed to remove the tape on one of the cartridges before inserting it into the printer. But again, that was user error!

The Epson WorkForce WF-7310 would be a great printer for either an office or for a home office, and for anyone needing to print out quickly, with sharp and bold colors and text, and for many of those folks, like myself, that need an option to print out in format that is larger than the standard letter size, making this wide-format printer a great tool in your arsenal!

Kudos to Epson on the WF-7310, as this truly is a quality printer on the cutting edge of technology!

Hi Folks,

One of the most stressful events in our every-day “technology lives” is anything to do with printer ink cartridges, whether it is making sure you get replacements before your current ones run out, making sure you get the right number cartridges or ones that are compatible with your printer, and of course, the massive expenses that come with buying new cartridges. With that being said, I might have just tested out a printer that rids that stress from your life. I am quite serious!

Let me step back here first, and let you know that I have had the pleasure of testing out and reviewing the new Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer, and the key words to focus on here are "EcoTank" and "Supertank". I will explain why first, and then we will get into what I found during my stress-testing and review of this new All-in-One Printer from Epson, and at the end, I will include all the detailed technical specifications (the "specs").

What Is A "Supertank"?

What is an EcoTank or a Supertank? Basically, it is a large basin, or "tank" that is built into the printer that you fill up with ink before printing. In the case of the Epson EcoTank ET-8500 (or "ET-8500", as I will refer to it), there are multiple smaller tanks to accommodate the different colors of ink. I look at the word "Eco" in EcoTank and I can attribute that to just how "Eco"nomical a Supertank printer is by saving you a substantial amount of money and aggravation, from never having to deal with the hassles of ink cartridges ever again, but also, to how environmentally friendly (Eco-friendly) this is by reducing the amount of waste (zero cartridge waste)!

With that said, I now introduce you to the Epson EcoTank ET-8500, a sleek, cutting edge, All-in-One Printer. From the moment you unbox the ET-8500, everything about it screams "power". This is not a lightweight, flimsy unit. This is a big, bold printer that can help you simplify so much in your life, whether it is for business, personal, or both.

Setting Up The Epson ET-8500:

The first step after unboxing the well-packaged and well-secured ET-8500 is to remove all the protective tape and materials from the unit, and there is a lot of it (do not forget to lift the scanner lid up, as well, since there are materials to remove there, too). Once I removed everything that I needed to, I plugged in the unit to an electrical outlet, pressed the power button, and on the nice big, colorful LCD screen, I selected "English", and followed the directions. I think it is important here to state just how sharp this LCD screen is on the unit, with a size of 4.3", with vibrant colors and crisp letters and numbers! It is intuitive, in other words, the steps make sense and are easy to follow, even if you do not have a technical background.

Since I was already on the Control Panel/LCD Screen, I figured it would be best to get the unit set up on my Wireless network (my Wi-Fi), and it was honestly quite easy. From the home screen, I tapped the little network symbol, then I selected Wi-Fi (Recommended), and then selected the Set-up wizard, which located my Wi-Fi network. From there, it was as easy as entering my Wi-Fi password, and tapping the screen one last time and like magic, the Epson ET-8500 was now configured and on my Wi-Fi network! The unit comes with a USB cable, as well, which you can use to connect and configure it via your laptop, and additionally, the Epson SmartPanel App allows you to connect to the printer remotely using your iPhone, Android, etc. I will get into my experience doing this during my review a little later. For now, we still need to add the ink and load the paper!

OK, now it was time to really get hands on with the "tank", which entailed filling up the tanks with ink! The first step here is to remove the cap very gently on the black ink. I found this out the hard way and squeezed the bottle a little tight and realized you must do it with a little bit of finesse. Fill each of the tanks one-by-one, then close the cover for the ink tank, and make sure that you secure the cap on the ink bottles to save what is left in each bottle (as in my case, there definitely was some ink left after the tanks were filled up). Epson claims that there is enough ink for over 6,000 printed color pages, and although that might be hard to believe, this is such a cutting-edge technology that it most probably will hit or exceed that target!

What I found interesting was a "Gray" ink, when I am normally used to Black ink cartridges and Color cartridges. I will elaborate on the impact of this ink a little later.

After the ink has "charged up", which, from what I can gather by watching the unit, is that ink flows from the tank to the actual apparatus that will do the printing (which logically seems like a time-saver when it comes time to print), I loaded up the paper. There are a few things to remember here, such as the type of paper matters; In other words, when you open the front cover, you can load up standard paper (A4/Letter Size, for example) in Cassette 2, but for Cassette 1, you can load up, for example, smaller paper (i.e., Photo Size). There is also a very convenient rear paper slot and feeder, which are great for other types of paper, for example, thicker stock (i.e., poster board) or other types of paper that may not feed via the front cassettes.

At this point, I had followed all the steps, and had in front of me the Epson ET-8500 locked and loaded, and ready for the next step, which was getting the software installed so I can start testing this baby!

There are a couple of ways that you can load up the Epson software to connect to and use the ET-8500; you can use the included CD if your laptop or desktop has a CD drive, or even easier, you can just point your browser to the provided Epson website link to download the required Epson drivers and Utilities. I selected this second option, as I found it much easier, but that is just a matter of preference.

The steps for installing the software with the Epson Drivers and Utilities is just as intuitive as the steps that I performed on the printer control panel/LCD Screen. Every step makes complete sense, and it is a breeze to install. The software is called Epson ScanSmart, which goes through the installation, and at the end, it will connect to your printer. If you recall earlier, I had already set up the printer on my wireless network, so I selected "Wireless Connection" at this step, but I could also have selected a Direct USB connection had I been configuring the printer to connect directly (physically) to my printer. So, you have a few options on how to get this set up.

With the Epson ET-8500 loaded with ink, filled with paper, connected to the network, and with the software installed on my laptop, the fun time of testing and reviewing the ET-8500 was about to begin!

Let's Get Testing!:

Since there would be virtually endless combinations and permutations of both paper size, paper stock (thickness), all multiplied by Black-ink Printing and multiplied by Color Printing, I decided to select the most common uses that I have from both a business use and from a personal perspective. For both business and personal, I do a lot of black ink printing (text & images) on letter size paper, as well as color printing on letter size paper, thick-stock paper, and I also print some of my photos on 4" x 6" photo stock. With that being said, I tested each of these types of printing, and will summarize my results, which I hope will prove helpful for you in my review of the Epson ET-8500!

I collated a few things for my tests; an all-black ink text contract file with very few images, a color document file that we recently designed for a seminar, a few photo images that I took outdoors, as well as a hard copy of both the aforementioned contract and the color document advertisement (hard copies for testing the physical scanning feature shortly).

My first test was printing out my black-ink contract file to Letter Size paper, which printed out at a decent speed (Epson states the speed at about 16 ISO ppm, or 16 pages per minute of black ink print speed). This was a 22-page contract, and it took about 95 seconds, so that seems just about right. The print was clear, crisp, and there was no smudging or smearing, and I was extremely satisfied with the print job.

The next test I ran was printing out a color advertisement, which I did on a thick stock paper, and for this test, I valued a sharp output more so than the speed itself, in other words, I valued the quality of the printed output more than the speed. This two-page output took a total of 14 seconds from the exact second that the paper started to physically enter the printer, which was fantastic, but, as mentioned, what was even more important to me was that this was a bold, vibrant, and gorgeous printed advertisement, and I firmly believe that it came out better than the folks we contracted with to print these out in bulk for an upcoming seminar! Crisp characters, sharp images, strong colors, with great transition between colors. Amazing!

For the next test, I loaded up photo paper in the front cassette, and then printed out 2 photos that I recently took by the water, so there were a lot of blues and greens and some reds/oranges from the sunrise. These colors were all represented just as perfectly as on my previous color print job, and once again, at or above professional print quality. Each photo took about 17-19 seconds, which was perfectly fine, but as before, the end quality was more important to me, and it was really off-the-charts!

Earlier, I had mentioned the gray ink and the impact it had, and in the photos that I printed there were some trees off to the left side which were shaded before the sun hit them, and the shaded area in the photos was so full of life, with the shadows that were present that day perfectly represented using the gray ink. Stunning!

Multiple Great Features:

One of the other features in the "All-in-One" Epson ET-8500 is the Scanning feature, as well as the Copy feature. The unit has an ultra-convenient flatbed scanner on top, and to test how it scans/copies, I used two hard copies that I prepared, which was a page from my black-ink contract, as well as one of our colorful ads that I had printed recently. When you place the document on the flatbed, and select the option to start the scan, it is quite fast from that moment until you have a scanned image as your output. In both cases, the scanned image was impeccable. There was nothing that looked off from the original, and I felt that magnifying the image or using a magnifying glass to check for imperfections would be overkill. It all looked fantastic, whether it was the black ink scanned image or the color scanned image (In both cases, I wanted to mention, that I scanned these hard copies as images, and then printed the images, to compare the scanned output, and to take a closer look at the hard copy output).

Everything that I tested to this point has been from my laptop, but I also wanted to talk about being able to do the same thing from my phone (My phone is an Android, but you can also do this from an Apple device). Installing the "Epson Smart Panel" app was as simple as downloading and installing it from the Google Play Store, and then following the steps to make sure that you can connect to the Printer (on the same wireless network as you). The App lets you do virtually everything you can do from your laptop right from your phone. Just to verify, I sent a print job through, and it was a seamless process!

The Wrap-Up:

In summary, the Epson ET-8500 is a fully featured, powerful, robust All-in-One Printer that allows you to accomplish the printing, scanning, and copying that you need to do for the purpose of both business and personal necessity. I found the features on the ET-8500 very well integrated, and I believe that it is the perfect addition to any home or office!

Hi Friends,

A quick question; is anyone tired of shoveling snow yet? Well, here in the Northeast, I have thrown the towel in, and I am done with all the snow!

The only thing tougher than snow is traveling during the middle of a rough, cold, snowy, and icy winter, and as many of you know out there, I do quite a lot of that, just so I can be there for my clients, while of course, observing social distancing. As a matter of fact, I happen to know that a large percentage of you reading this are also on the road a lot, and it is not for pleasure trips! The popularity of Zoom meetings can only bridge the gap during the pandemic, but there is nothing like being face-to-face with your clients.

The benefits of that personal touch come along with some issues, because as we all know, business travel means 24/7 work, and in many industries, that means a lot of paperwork to keep track of and to organize when you are on the road.

Why the long lead-in? Well, I have had the extreme honor of testing out one of the newest scanners from Epson, the Epson RapidReceipt RR-70W Wireless Mobile Receipt and Document Scanner. Along with testing it out, I have written up a review about this handy new portable scanner, and I have a feeling that many of you fellow "road warriors" will be quite interested in the RR-70W!

Now, when I say "portable", I truly mean portable! This is the definition of "compact", and exceptionally light (I didn't weigh it, but it cannot weigh more than a pound, maybe less!). In terms of size, it is just about a foot long, and has a low-profile of about 1-2 inches tall and wide. However, do not left the size fool you, because this is a full-functional, sleek, sharp, and powerful scanner that will shock you, and will make a substantial impact on how you do business and get organized, at home, in the office, or on the road!

Before we dig deep, I want to give you the 30,000-foot overview of this manual sheet-fed portable document scanner. First, on the topic of documents, this is truly a versatile scanner, with a wide realm of potential items that you can scan. The reason that I call them "items" is that they really are items; not only receipts, invoices and documents (financial, etc.), but the scanner also will scan checks, business cards, identification cards, as well as some pretty large pages (based on the specifications, the max size would be up to 8.5 x 72")!

SET-UP:

The entire process of un-boxing and unpacking the RR-70W is quite easy, and of course, you must make sure you remove all of the wrap and the protective plastic before you can get rolling. I buy a lot of electronics, and a lot of products that always work better when you give them a charge for the first time, so I followed that same rule here. Taking a step back to let you know, the RR-70W has an extremely efficient built-in rechargeable battery, which allows it to operate without requiring it to be permanently connected to a USB power source. However, if you are a fan of cables, the RR-70W will run with power over the provided USB cable when connected/tethered to your laptop or desktop. On that note, I did not have the USB charger that I use for my smartphone nearby, so I connected the USB cable from the RR-70W to my laptop. However, I fully believe that the scanner would charge substantially quicker plugged into a smartphone wall charger (Please note that the USB cable comes in the box, not the charger or wall charger).

Since I happen to be one of those folks who likes to charge electronics before using them, then in order to make good use of my time while letting the RR-70W charge up, I figured it would be the perfect time to download the software and drivers from the Epson site to get things going. This download includes any drivers needed for Windows. After downloading the installer, I made some coffee and answered a few E-mails, which took all of 30 minutes, and I figured that by now, the RR-70W was at a good enough charge level to start rolling!

I ran the set up for the installer that I had downloaded and followed the prompts as I went forward. At a point during the installation, it will ask you to connect the Scanner to your laptop or computer, but if you are charging the Scanner via USB connection to your laptop or computer, you are already on your way!

At another point during the installation, it asks if you want to configure the device as a wired device (USB) or as a Wi-Fi device. Why would I choose Wi-Fi? The answer: Because I want to Wirelessly scan my receipts and documents. After the scanner is detected and the updates are downloaded, it will also tell you to flip on the Wi-Fi toggle switch on the RR-70W. When the whole process completes (and you feel that you have enough of a battery charge), you will no longer need the USB cable to configure the scanner.

I mentioned the Wi-Fi toggle switch in the last section, but there are some other parts of the control panel area on the RR-70W that are worth mentioning. The control panel is the section where all of the action is in terms of the buttons and switches on the right front and right side of the RR-70W. For example, your Power button and Scan button are located there, as well as small LED status lights on the side that will display the status of your connection, of your battery, your mode, and any errors. That is where you will also see your "Ready" status light. Everything is located intuitively, without needing to search all over the device. Also, on the right side of the RR-70W is where I plugged in the other end of the USB cable earlier when charging the device and configuring it.

SPEED, QUALITY, & SOFTWARE/INTEGRATION:

So now, with everything installed, configured, and ready to go, I prepared a pile of multiple types of documents and business cards and receipts that I planned on using to test the RR-70W, and I will give my review based on the intersection of multiple factors, consisting of the speed, accuracy, and the software/integration features. I will provide the review of these factors together, and I apologize in advance for not separating these out to sections with headers, as there is a lot of correlation between these factors.

SPEED: This is a sheet fed scanner - and I manually fed 15 pages of a contract that I removed a staple from. In total, with my stopwatch feature on my phone, it took 1 minute and 9 seconds, which is not bad, because the specifications state the speed at 15 pages per minute. I was also able to feed through a bunch of older receipts that were a little bit "mangled" to say the least, for example, folded/creased and some were faded. Not only did these zip through pretty fast, but I thought that they might rotate left or right a little bit when the scanner hit the creases or tears, but the RR-70W was able to feed all of these through neatly and, getting the jump on my review of the quality and accuracy, the scans were not skewed and the images and text looked enhanced, almost making it look as if the receipts did not have any fading, and excessive area around the receipt was cropped out. Great job, and it saved me a lot of touch up work and enhancements I would normally have to do after scanning (or sometimes, having to repeat scans multiple times until I got it right and feeding without skewing...before even starting to crop and enhance images once I complete the scanning part). This scanner saved me a lot of work! Incidentally, I had the same success scanning business cards, and some of them were thick, and some of them were in less-than-perfect shape from my wallet, and this process was just as seamless!

QUALITY/ACCURACY: When reading the specifications, I noted that the RR-70W features a 600-dpi optical resolution for detailed image capture, so I was naturally very curious to see how accurate the scan results would be. I figured that one of the best tests I could do was a page that I had with multiple images and logos on it, and I proceeded to initiate the scan from the application. At the completion of the scan, I was extremely impressed with how sharp the images were, and how clear they came out. Some of these were quite detailed images, and it did not miss a single section of the images!

SOFTWARE/INTEGRATION: The key factor...the key "pitch" with the Epson RapidReceipt RR-70W, from what I can see from testing it and reviewing it, is being able to scan receipts and documents on the go, and after that, being able to make use of the scanned content and images. For that reason, Epson include a receipt management software (ScanSmart), which helps you accomplish the goal of making use of what you have scanned, and it is quite efficient and clever, all at the same time!

The software that comes with the Epson RR-70W, as I mentioned, is a receipt manager, allowing you to extract data from your scanned documents...basically, it intelligently reads the scanned data and pulls it into fields within the ScanSmart database. This is the feature that allows you to do something with that data (instead of letting your receipts and documents sit in folders!). What I found most helpful is that it lets you edit the fields, so you are able to categorize the data and save it in a way that works best for your purposes, for example, I split my data across fields/categories for each of the clients for which my receipts and documents apply.

Just to go off on a "geek" tangent for a moment, the technology that allows the ScanSmart software to be able to read and extract data from scanned images is known as "OCR", or "Optical Character Recognition". The OCR functionality that comes with the RR-70W is incredibly accurate and on the very high-end of this technology. I am comfortable saying this because I cross-checked most all of what I scanned and what the software extracted, and I was hard-pressed to find even one letter or number that was different from what was on the hard copy/copies that I scanned. Think about that for a moment, and you will realize just how important that is when it comes to dealing with critical financial documents!

You might ask, "What can you do with this categorized data?". Well, when you downloaded the software, it also included TWAIN drivers that can help you quickly and efficiently take that data and export it to/integrate it with many other 3rd party programs, such as, per Epson; Quicken, QuickBooks, TurboTax, Excel, CSV, and more. For my purposes, I like to export to the universal data format, CSV, or "comma separated values", for use across both Microsoft Office (Excel), as well as some proprietary systems that I use for my company. Doing it this way, I just had to change a few of the fields to make the export/integration as easy as apples-to-apples, which it was, but from what I understand, exporting to/integrating with popular apps such as QuickBooks and Quicken are even easier, and close to seamless (but we do not use these specific apps).

SUMMARY:

Testing and reviewing the Epson RapidReceipt RR-70W was a great experience for me, and it was quite easy, mostly because of accurate documentation, and an intuitive button layout.

The compact size of the RR-70W, and the fact that it is super lightweight make it easy to slip this scanner in your laptop bag and go on your way!

Are you the type with folders and boxes of receipts and documents that are stressing you out? The RR-70W allowed me to cut down on at least 3 folders and a box with receipts and documents, and now they are safely stored to my cloud drive, after being extracted to the categories that make my life easier, especially when it comes to tax time!

Of course, nothing is ever perfect, and if I could make one wish for the RR-70W, I would love to have an Automatic Document Feeder (an ADF) that comes along with the scanner or that would be available as an add-on. This way, I would not have to manually feed each page to scan them. However, after a little while, it becomes second nature, and it helps you stay present and keep better track, granularly, as to what you plan to scan and what you have already scanned.

Overall, this is a great, portable, compact, fast, accurate, cutting-edge receipt and document scanner that is likely to make your life easier, and to help you escape the paper jungle that most of us still live in on a daily basis!

I highly recommend the RR-70W to anyone looking for a comprehensive scanning solution for use at home, in a small office, on the road...or actually...for all of the above! Once again, Epson is a class act with this high-performance and sophisticated scanner, and they really hit it out of the park with the Epson RapidReceipt RR-70W!

I hope everyone is doing well, and I pray you and your families have been keeping safe.

With tax time fast approaching, this is the time of year that many of us start scrambling to locate all of the receipts, invoices, etc. that we need in order to file our taxes. This chaotic and frenzied burst of energy is stressful, and the reality is that with technology, it does not have to be that way anymore!

Instead of those bulky folders with receipts of all sizes and papers that are stapled together and fading out or have smeared over the past year, wouldn't it be much easier to have all of those receipts and documents digitized? Wouldn't it be great if you could take these digital versions of your important receipts and papers and organize them into folders, based on, for example, the type of expenses that they are? Wouldn’t it be great to save these files directly to a cloud drive, like Dropbox or Google Drive, for example?

If you have not guessed, I am describing the benefits of a scanner to help you get organized, whether it be in your business or your personal life. One step further, how about a document scanner that is wireless, color, and can duplex (scan both sides of a document), all with the greatest of ease?

Enter the Epson Workforce ES-580W Wireless Color Duplex Desktop Document Scanner, the solution to all of your worries and stresses that surround getting organized! I have had the pleasure of reviewing this great Document Scanner, and I have the even greater pleasure of presenting you with everything that I found in testing out the ES-580W!

FIRST GLANCE & SET-UP:

At first glance, you may be a little confused about the relatively small size of the box, however, that is part of the allure of the ES-580W. When you remove it from the box and take off all of the packing materials surrounding it, you will be extremely impressed at this cool scanner! I was impressed by how sharp it looks, and also, one of the first things that struck me was the large 4.3" Touchscreen!

When you power up the ES-580W, the sharp colors of the Touchscreen are truly striking! Through this intuitive and helpful panel, you can perform all of the fun, exciting, and important functions of the Scanner. For example, this is where you set up your wireless connection, as well as perform your scanning either for physical output to paper or as a file saved up to your cloud drive or cloud storage. I will definitely be giving you more details on this as we go!

Taking a step back, after situating it on a very crowded work area (which is a major benefit of the relatively small size of the ES-580W...it fits literally anywhere!) and powering it on, my first step was connectivity. Connecting to my Wireless Network was as quick and as simple as authenticating (just like you would add any other device onto your network, like a phone, tablet, desktop, laptop, etc.).

The first thing I did was download the software for the ES-580W, which included the Epson ScanSmart on my laptop, and additionally, I also downloaded the Epson Smart Panel App on my Android phone. More to come on why I did this shortly! As far as I see it, at this point, I am ready to start testing out this little beast and see how fast it scans, the quality of the scans that it performs, and I am also ready to check out all of the great features of the ES-580W!

First, before starting our tests, I prepared a scanning pile of both all black-type and also other documents and items with color and still others with images, so, basically, a few contract documents, some receipts, some flyers, and a bunch of business cards!

SPEED, QUALITY, AND FUNCTION:

When I have tested a scanner previously, I checked the specs first, and then tested it out to see if I came close to that same speed, but I did it in reverse this time. One of the vendor contracts that I have laying around (because I am a work "geek") was extremely lengthy, running roughly 32 pages of mostly all black type. There were definitely some images mixed in, however, it is about 85-90% text. I sent this through as my first test, and it scanned through the batch after a total of 58 seconds. To me, this was really quite fast, but, I did a little math to quantify that statement.

The stated scan speeds are 35 ppm, or 35 pages per minute (of all text) and 70 ipm, or 70 images per minute. Normally, based on this, if this contract was all text and no images, 32 pages should have taken about 54 seconds. However, as I mentioned, 10-15% of the contract had some images and infographics, so 58 seconds was very impressive.

Within the papers and documents that I prepared to scan, I have about 20 that have text on both sides of the page. Using these pages, I was able to test the speed of the duplex scanning feature and as the ES-580W was blazing through this part of my test and handling all of the work of scanning both sides of each page, it made me realize how much of a time saver this feature is. I have spent literally countless hours scanning pages and then having to flip them over to scan the other side, but the ES-580W does all of the work for you!

Taking this one step further, I scanned in some cash receipts I had which were a little bent and somewhat mangled from being crammed in a folder, and I was afraid that they would jam during the scanning process, however, I noticed that not only does the ES-580W sense the contours of the paper, it also makes sure that what you are scanning does not get jammed and skew (basically, rotate), and give you those skewed/bunched up scan results of which we are probably all familiar with and can all agree that we totally detest!

The reason for this truly "smart"/"intelligent" function is the protection and reliability that is built into the ES-580W. The Epson "Image Processing Technology" is the reason behind this "magic", and some of the other benefits from this technology are protection against missing pages ("Ultrasonic Double Feed Detection") and preventing against damage caused by staples ("Paper Protection"). All of these features work in tandem to provide you the best possible scan results.

On the topic of scan results, whether I scanned to my Computer or scanned to E-mail, and whether I scanned all black text or a mix of black and color and with or without images, the results were all sharp, with crisp letters and images, and truly vibrant colors that were flawless, at least to the naked eye.

FEATURES:

There were several features that I was extremely excited to try, such as previewing scans via the Epson ScanSmart software, scanning to my cloud drive (Dropbox), scanning from my Android phone, and scanning to a USB stick without needing to use any other device!

Earlier, I mentioned that I had downloaded the Epson ScanSmart software to my laptop, and the reason I did his was to not only scan from my laptop, but also, to be able to test out what I found to be some of the awesome features of this software. The best part of this software was being able to preview my scans, meaning that if I did not like how it would scan, I would have the option of using a different copy to scan before committing to the scan. Again, everything I have found was geared towards saving time and producing quick, quality scan results.

Another couple of things to mention regarding the Epson software, which I did not get a chance to test were the ability to connect to document libraries/document management software using the included universal "TWAIN" drivers, which would prove quite helpful in an office setting. Also, there is an immensely helpful feature that converts scanned documents into searchable PDF files using OCR, or Optical Character Recognition. This is a huge feature and can really help you save time when you need to scan in a huge number of documents, and you do not want to read through every scanned document in order to find exactly what you need to find if you are limited with time.

Like so many of us, I depend heavily on my cloud drive (Dropbox) for storage of my most critical work and personal documents. Epson realizes the importance of these cloud drives and provides a simple way to scan directly to folders on your cloud drive. First, you need to register your cloud drive via Epson Connect, whether it is Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Evernote, etc. Once you do this, it is super easy; just place your document on the scanner, select "Cloud", and follow the prompts. This feature is absolutely priceless!

Earlier, I had also mentioned that I downloaded the Epson Smart Panel App on my Android phone. So many of us are constantly on the move that the ease of being able to send a scan directly from our phones makes life so much easier. All that I needed to do in order to make this happen was to put the document on the scanner, launch the Epson Smart Panel App on my phone, and just follow the instructions. It was a pleasure and very liberating being able to scan "on the go" and not being tethered to my laptop!

One great feature I like to call, "No computer? No worries". If you do not have any devices available to scan to (i.e., Laptop, Desktop, Phone, etc.), but you have an external USB device (such as a USB Memory Stick/Flash drive/thumb drive), you can scan directly to that USB device! This is even easier than it sounds; I plugged a brand-new USB Memory stick into the back of the Scanner (in the USB port), I placed one of my documents on the Scanner, selected "Memory Device" from the menu, and followed the prompts. It scanned and saved to my USB Memory stick. No computer or any other intermediary device was needed! Of course, I removed the USB stick when it completed to verify that the scan was on it, and after plugging it into the USB port on my laptop, I saw the scan file that was created. I opened it up and verified that not only did it scan and save it to the USB drive, but it did so flawlessly!

SUMMARY:

What I look for in technology is flexibility; "Will it make my life easier, and, can it do so without compromising quality?". Testing and reviewing the Epson WorkForce ES-580W was the best way to allow me to answer those questions.

Making life easier very closely correlates with saving time. With the features such as scanning two sides at once (duplex scanning), blazing fast scanning speeds, and the 100-Sheet Auto Document Feeder (ADF), I firmly believe that my life would be easier by using these features and qualities.

Versatility is another key factor in making life easier, and the wide variety of items that can be scanned (documents, receipts, plastic cards, business cards, etc.), coupled with the fact that you can scan documents that can range up to 240", all go along with making things easy!

The second part of what I look for, which was not compromising quality as a trade-off for making life easier), the proof is in the high-quality scanned output, and the sharp, vibrant, and vivid colors/images produced by scanning with the ES-580W. There is not one thing that I can pick out that has compromised the quality to spite the flexibility and versatility of this scanner.

If I were pressed for one thing to say that the ES-580W is missing, the only thing I could say is that I wish it had a flatbed scanner. However, here is where one of those "trade-offs" would come into play; a flatbed would make this a much larger unit, and would require substantially more space, and thus, part of what makes life easy is not having to make more space for the ES-580W...it just "fits" perfectly into life...and keeping with that theme... makes life easier!

Hi Friends,

It is the Holiday Season, and at least in the Northeast, that reminiscent and very-welcomed chill is in the air! I hope all of you have been keeping safe during the pandemic.

Today, I have the honor of introducing you to a great new All-In-One Multi-Function Printer (MFP), which includes the functions of printing, copying, scanning and faxing, all in one single device. One of the many benefits of this new printer is its ability to print in "Wide-Format", and through the incorporated wide-format printing capabilities, print sizes are allowed up to 13” x 19”. This amazing new offering from Epson is the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7840.

FIRST APPEARANCES ARE EVERYTHING:

Unboxing the WF-7840, you begin to realize just how large this printer actually is in person! Once it is unboxed, and you set up the 250-Sheet Cassette paper trays, the device looms even larger! The two internal trays (including a rear paper feed) will allow you to use multiple different types of paper, all at once. The ink cartridges that come with the printer (812I) are for use in setting up the printer, "priming" the printer, and for use thereafter. This ink is incredibly high quality "Durabrite", and is a pigment-based ink, making it water-resistant on many types of paper (which comes in very handy in an oppressively humid environment or climate, such as New York City in July and August, when everything feels humid to the touch!).

SET-UP:

When you first turn on the WF-7840 "cold", it's a little noisy, but when the Printer is on but is "sleeping", it's more of a quick start and it's ready to go in an instant. Once you get rolling with the WF-7840, it runs at what I consider a whisper-quiet tone and seems quieter than other models I have used previously, perhaps the result of progressive technology.

The star of the show in setting up the WF-7840 is the 4.3" LCD touchscreen, which walks you through the set-up process, from selecting your language, country, and other printer settings, such as loading the paper and the ink. The screen tilts and adjusts so you can configure the printer using the most comfortable angle. Additionally, the graphics are strong and intuitive, and the response from your selections are instantaneous and very accurate, and it seems like it has discounted any fat-finger moments that we are all guilty of sometimes when typing!

The CD that comes with the WF-7840 contains the Epson Driver and Utilities Software (the set-up process also installs the TWAIN drivers) and the User Guide. Once online, Epson’s software (which can also be downloaded from the Epson website) handles configuration and adds the WF-7840 to your available printers.

Within 10 minutes, you should be all set up and ready to print, scan, copy, and fax! In terms of these aforementioned "functions" of this multi-function printer, let us take a look at how well each of them performs!

SPEED:

When looking at the "speed" of a printer, the widely accepted benchmarks that are used are the Pages per Minute (PPM) output that the printer is capable of producing. This is further broken down into the speed of printing black only and printing color, and then further sub-divided into printing a single-sided page and a double-sided page, or "duplex" printing.

The Epson WF-7840 specifications show a print speed of 25 PPM for single-sided black-only, and 16 PPM for double-sided black-only. The specifications for color are stated as 12 PPM for a single-sided printed page, and 9 PPM for a double-sided printed page.

Of course, I always take specifications from any vendor as averages, and I like to test the single-sided print speeds, as that is the function I use most often. In order to do so, I used the stopwatch function on my phone and sent through 25-pages of invoice files (as one composite file) as a black-only print job with some images to test the single-sided speed. The results: I hit a total of just 56 seconds at the end of the print job, meaning that I would have crossed over 25 PPM, which is incredible!

Next, I had a color presentation file (with images) that I limited to 12 pages for the color speed test, and the results of my single-sided color printing test came out at exactly 60 seconds, fully on target with the 12 PPM as specified.

The results were incredibly impressive!

QUALITY:

It is one thing for a printer to have blinding speed, but, without quality printing, the speed is absolutely irrelevant. So, my next task was to examine the physical printed output from my speed tests to verify the overall quality of printing via the WF-7840.

First, let us focus on the black-only printing, which reveals a nice and gradual transition in tones, and the best way to describe it is going from white page to gray to black, basically, gray scale. The lines and angles in the images were sharp, and holding the page close to my eyes, I did not detect any "bleeding" of the black ink.

With exceptional quality results from the black-only print job, I had high expectations for the results of the color print job output from the speed test. I performed the same inspection as I did with the black-only print job, and all of the transitions from one color to the next were perfect, without any defects as far as I could inspect. There was no color bleeding on the page, and the colors were bold and vivid!

In the interest of also examining the quality of wide-format print jobs, I sent through two small print jobs of wide/large format, one using black-only ink and the other using color ink. Just as I had expected, the same quality of black/grayscale and bold color with perfect transitions that I found when printing letter size was also evident upon printing out my wide format test print jobs! Perfection!

FEATURES:

Now that we have looked at the print speed and the print quality of the Epson WF-7840, let us now turn our attention to some of its other great features and functions.

Scanning with the WF-7840 is extremely easy and quite efficient. You have the option of scanning either single-sided or double-sided documents, and with an option for wide-format scanning, you are able to scan these in at the pinnacle of quality with incredible resolution!

Once you have the Epson software installed, it is quite seamless, because all you need to do at that point is to place the photo, document, etc. on the flatbed/scanning glass and the software launches. Additionally, you can use the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) for 11” x 17” document sizes, and the ADF also has the capability to scan both sides of your page ("duplexing"). This "duplexing" feature using the ADF is quite efficient, and auto-adjusts to avoid skewing to one side or misfeeding and having a jam in the feeder. Those are some incredible benefits, along with being able to duplex quickly and conveniently for two-sided printing without needing to re-feed the paper - features that I had not realized I wanted in a printer for my home office until I used it for the first time.

Just one more note on the trays and how helpful they are; the power delivery tray is incredibly cool and extremely useful. What this means is that this tray automatically retracts when the unit is off or you have selected it to retract, but when you send/scan/print/fax a document, this tray automatically slides out so that your documents don't start dropping to the floor and sliding across the room, because sometimes, we will scan, print, or fax something and move on to other work, and then we have to go and retrieve the hard copies that we sent from every corner of the room (of course, made even worse when you have a ceiling fan running!)

Once scanning has completed, you have choices that allow you to attach the scanned file to an E-mail, to save it, or to send to a Cloud storage drive, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc. This ties the entire scanning process of the WF-7840 into a seamless process, end-to-end. Exactly what we need to remove extra steps and extra work in our already-complex lives!

As a natural combination of both printing and scanning, the copying/photocopying function also performed exactly as expected, after testing via copying using the flatbed and the ADF.

Another of the primary functions of the WF-7840, albeit, not used as often as it once was, is Faxing. I tested this out in a very similar manner to the scanning and copying functions; via the flatbed (scanner glass), the ADF, as well as via an application (using the fax driver), and sending to my secondary number that is connected through to a fax input receiver. All methods resulted in transmission and receipt of exactly what I had expected, which was perfect! There is also a quick and convenient way to fax documents and images directly from a USB stick/USB disk drive plugged directly into the front of the WF-7840, and then you can also print documents, photos, etc. directly from that USB disk!

As a test in reverse, I sent several faxes to the WF-7840, and these results were also exactly as expected, and the exciting part here is that you have multiple ways to store the incoming faxes, aside from just printing them when they arrive, for example, you could forward them to a shared network folder, save it as a PDF file, or you could store it in the printer memory.

Many of the above functions can be enhanced and tweaked using the Epson utility software, such as customizing and printing photos, etc. Additionally, the Epson Printer App allows you to print from your phone (documents and photos) and send scans to your device. I tried a lot of these features, and found them to be quite intuitive, and extremely convenient for a mobile lifestyle.

In keeping with the concept of a mobile lifestyle, having a printer that is completely wireless can make it quick and easy to get work done without being glued to your seat all day long! For example, you have the option of using Wi-Fi direct, allowing you to send anything from your laptop, phone, tablet, desktop, etc., and even though we have a wireless router at home, it would not be a prerequisite in order to enjoy the benefits of Wi-Fi direct printing at home from our phone or computer.

SUMMARY:

It's no secret that Epson puts out a quality product, but until you physically have a WF-7840 in front of you, it's hard to truly describe the efficiency and quality that you will gain from this beast!

Overall, the full set of features and functions in the WF-7840 are cutting edge and truly over and above the best and most state-of-the-art printers on the market today. If I was hard-pressed to "complain" about one thing about WF-7840, that would not be an easy task, however, my only complaint (if you could even call it that), is that I wish the power cord was just a little bit longer to make the stretch to the outlet. However, that is nothing that a handy power strip could not help remedy!

In reflecting on the stress-testing that I performed, I found the WF-7840 incredibly user-friendly, and the quality of the print jobs were incredibly sharp and vibrant. Further, when transitioning to the very special feature of wide-format printing in the past with other printers, I had seen a reduction in quality in terms of resolution and overall appearance, however, Epson has taken that out of the equation, and produces almost flawless output! The benefits that are provided by this strong feature of the WF-7840 will span not only workgroups, but will extend to those professionals working in the architectural field, as well as those in technical and mechanical fields, so, basically, those professionals with the need to produce wide-format output. These derived benefits will extend to both the business user in a home office or to users in a business office.

For all of those professionals that either work from home (which is a growing amount of the population) or those who work in business offices, this will allow you to begin producing documents with print-shop quality from within your own office setting versus the previous need to travel back and forth to a print shop/copy center (as well as incurring the costs associated with those journeys!).

To summarize my experience, I can only say “Kudos” to Epson on an incredible addition to their line of Multi-Function Printers with the versatile, efficient, and powerful Epson WorkForce WF-7840!

Hi Folks, Welcome back, and I am happy to say that I have another fantastic product that I have reviewed for you, and as with many of these we have discussed before, I hope this can also find a tremendous use within your business or your personal life, to help make things easier to manage overall! Keeping with the concept of making things easier for you, probably one of the best products for such a goal is one that bundles a whole bunch of different features that you use on a consistent, if not, a daily basis. For example, printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. With the cat out of the bag, indeed, I am talking about an All-in-One Printer, the Epson WorkForce WF-2830, which I have had the enormous pleasure of testing, pounding, hammering, and making sure that I had the true results, without aberrations, to review and report back to you here! Let's take a look at everything, from first popping open the box, setting it up, testing out the speed, quality, and then we'll look at some of the great features, and wrap up with the full technical specifications ("Specs"), for folks of the more geeky sort, like me! FIRST APPEARANCES: When you pop open the box, you will immediately notice a very attractive matte black printer unit, that is securely packaged, along with the power cord and the ink cartridges. They say that good things come in small packages, and this is a compact unit that holds the promise of being able to fit in any location...desktop, shelf, counter...and this promise is true. Aside from its "fit anywhere" compact nature, it is also a strikingly good-looking unit that folds up and folds out neatly and with very little effort! SET-UP: What sets a lot of printers, all-in-ones, or scanners apart from all others in its class sometimes comes down to the set-up procedures. Is it easy? If so, is it easy just to technical folks? How about folks who are not so technical? Fortunately, I am a tekkie, but I have a very good friend (a neighbor of mine) who stopped by to return a snow shovel that it appears he will not be needing this boring New York winter season, and I asked him to take a few minutes and see if he can set this thing up. I wasn't going to make the poor fella do everything, but I just wanted to see if he was in the right direction, and he was. I really wanted to check this as a test of the instructions, and if I let him complete it, he would have had no issues! I took over and actually went through the steps myself, and it's all quite intuitive, which shows that Epson put a lot of time and research into testing with non-technical folks, in order to make the process as simple and stream-lined as it actually is! Nothing creates a bad connection between a customer and a manufacturer as when that customer has issues right from the start from setting up a device. The interface was very smooth, the LCD screen is super easy to view and use, and it took just a short while to have the software installed from the Epson website, the ink cartridges installed, calibrated, and the device ready to go! On the topic of the ink cartridges, it makes it so easy that they are individual, so you can replace only the colors that you need, vs having to replace all of them at once. The only minor issue was getting used to the character input when entering my wireless network (and the beep for each input), but after a few moments, you get used to the process and breeze right through it! Right after you finish this, you will see the printer on your wireless network, and then it is accessible from all your devices!SPEED: In order to test the speed of the WF-2830, I pounded it with multiple types of documents, with and without images, and black and white as well as color documents. It handled all of these jobs seamlessly and effortlessly, and I ran these same tests a few times each to verify my print times were consistent, and not a first time run aberration (with a drop in performance, thereafter), and I found consistency straight through! Sometimes, when using a fast-performing unit like this, you will notice some noise coming from the printer, which I have seen on many other printers, however, this is whisper quiet and a workhorse! QUALITY: The output of the WF-2830 was akin to literally taking what I was printing or scanning or copying, and duplicating it, flawlessly. I tested printing, copying, scanning, and faxing of documents, E-mails, and photos, and a few color flyers that I had, and the result was perfection. I have a second line with a fax unit and tested back and forth faxing without any flaws, delays, or degradation in speed or output. Well-done, Epson!FEATURES: One of the coolest features of the WF-2830 is printing from your mobile device, which is super easy to set up and use, and even if you are in another room in your home and "far" from your printer, you can send the print job from your smartphone or other mobile device, and when you go back to where the printer is, your printed output will be there waiting for you. As far as scanning, which we briefly touched on before, there is a wide variety of settings that allow you to scan in various output qualities (i.e. resolution), which gives you great flexibility vs the old "one scan fits all" mentality. As for faxing, there are also features to tweak, and even though faxing is not used as much as it was, it's always a great feature to have when it's needed (there will always be a reason, especially with Medical records/HIPAA act). Paper Management is also handled perfectly by the WF-2830, starting with the 100-Sheet Paper Capacity, helping you to avoid having to keep reloading the unit with paper after every print job. Staying on the topic of paper, the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), with its 30-page capacity, is a huge time-saver when you are scanning in a stack of papers/documents. It will feed them one-by-one, vs having to stand there and feed each document in yourself one-by-one. Still another great paper-related feature is the Duplex feature, which allows you to print on both sides of a sheet of paper instead of just one side, and not only is it a money-saving feature, but it is also a "Green" feature, allowing you to cut down on paper usage! The last feature that I am very fond of is the voice-activated printing, which is a huge feature with the way the "Smart Home" products like Alexa and Google Assistant have been exploding in the market! Once you have this set up, which is a breeze, you can easily send any document, etc. to your printer, and I was able to test this specifically using my Google Assistant. This is a very exciting and a very helpful feature!SUMMARY: After stress-testing this unit over and over for several days, I found that it is a trooper, and can truly give you what it promises in the description of the printer. In other words, the speed, performance, reliability, quality, and features are not just smoke being blown at you, but rather, truly verifiable in using this incredible all-in-one printer. Hi folks,

I have been working in the technology field for longer that I care to say, but let's just say north of 20 years! One of the most awesome developments that I have seen over that time has been the ability to reach out and touch something that you are not physically near or physically connected to. For example, without going too geek on you, having a server that needs to have some upgrades done that have to be done from the physical console/screen...but the server is located a few thousand miles away in our L.A. Office. Some years back, I would need to arrange to have someone in that office to be in front of the server and perform the upgrade as I direct them step by step. Time-consuming and inefficient, but necessary.

However, as time moved forward, we began using remote access tools, allowing me to connect to that server and perform all of the functions required, from the comfort of our New York HQ. On a similar scale, this same base of technology allows us to see and hear who is at our doorbell and communicate with them, as if we are right there, even if we are laying on a sun-drenched beach in the Caribbean. Heck, you can woof like a vicious dog and watch people jump with fear. Of course, never do that to your neighbor...especially those that hold grudges...I'm just saying!

In keeping with the thought of that remote reach out and touch technology, the market has quite a few players now with smart home devices, such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and others. One of the players in this Smart Home niche is a company called Hubitat, and they have a very unique twist on this market, with their "Elevation" Smart home hub. It is a centralized "hub", as its name suggests, which acts as the control center for all of your home devices that you choose or will choose to connect in your home.

I recently had the pleasure of testing out the Hubitat Elevation, and based on what I found as a result, from Set-up and Testing on through General Usage, this could just be what you were looking for or maybe something you did not even realize existed...something to help you keep on top of the safety of your home, as well as your gadgets and possibly even your energy efficiency.

The Hubitat Elevation hub came very well wrapped and secured in a box about 2.5 times the size of the actual device, and when I saw the physical hub, I was surprised at how small it was. I was trying to figure where it would go and how will I be able to have it in a secure location (it's advantageous to keep something that can possibly control the power and security of your home in a tamper-free location). However, the device fit's literally in the palm of your hand, so finding a place with a power source nearby was incredibly easier than I had imagined.

The Hubitat needs to be connected into your Router via an Ethernet cable (an RJ-45), so after you plug in the power to your Hubitat, you have a few choices: connect the cable to the Hubitat and the router, get a longer RJ-45 cable in your local shop and run the cable through a ceiling or floor, if need be, or have a network drop (or a patch panel with a network wall outlet). The latter might be a little much for folks, so the first two options work fine.

Once the Hubitat is connected up physically, the next step is where you get it recognized to make it active. From your computer that is on the same exact network as the Hubitat (the computer and Hubitat must both be connected to the same router), you access the Hubitat portal website (where you should see the device icon), sign up, enter some basic information, and name your device. Activation is that simple. There are no tricks, changes to make on your router, with your ISP. No headaches. Just a simple and straightforward way to get your Hubitat Elevation online, alive, and kicking.

Now, the benefit of using this device, as we discussed, is all about remote administration, and the first piece I added to my Hubitat family is the Centralite Smart Outlet. The way I found it best to add this outlet was to download in the Google Play Store the App, "Hubitat Dashboard". Once I downloaded the App and logged into it with the credentials I set up when activating earlier, I saw the Hubitat Elevation on the Dashboard. At this point, I simply selected to Add a Device, and the Smart Outlet is by Centralize, but also can be selected as Zigbee, which I did. Once that Smart Outlet showed up, I saw there was a toggle option....basically, on and off. I have a tester bulb that has a prong to plug into an outlet for testing power (but you could easily plug in a radio with the volume on), and now the bulb was on, indicating power to it, but the Smart Outlet has a small blue light indicating it is on, as well. When I clicked the toggle on the app on my phone to turn the Smart Outlet "Off", the Bulb went out! When I clicked, "On", it went on! I had my security camera pointed at the outlet, and I went food shopping, and while I was out, I planned on testing the Smart Outlet from a different network (not on my Home Wi-Fi), and on a split screen on my phone, using the Hubitat Dashboard on the top section of the split screen, I was able to Toggle the Outlet on and off and the Bulb went on and off and I watched it from my security camera app on the bottom split screen. Cool! Why cool? This means I can control my lights and anything else I want to control from anywhere in the world. I had the capability to add more Smart Outlets and control literally every device in my home, possibly even my thermostat to conserve energy and lower my bills, if I wanted to!

The next device I tested was the Centralite Micro Door Sensor, which had the same type of set up. This device is akin to the old "open circuit", that signals when it is opened. When setting this up, which required connecting both parts of the sensor to an internal door in my home (just for testing). the parts have to be lined up precisely, so they can open and close without friction, and allow the circuit to be opened. Once I had this set up, I created an alert to be notified upon the circuit being opened, and I had a friend randomly open the door and write down the exact times it was opened, while I went to a location away from my Home Wi-Fi. The times the door was opened corresponded exactly to the times I received the alerts, which meant there was no delay in the relay of the alerts, and no latency. This is fantastic and once it is used on an entry door, it can prove incredibly valuable. If you have a cleaning service or workers in your home while you are away and you close doors to the bedrooms or other rooms you do not want anyone to have access to, you can add one of these to each of those doors and be immediately notified if they were opened.

There are infinite applications and ways in which you can use the Hubitat Elevation, along with the Smart Outlet and Micro-Door Sensors. Not only are they intuitive to use and to set up, but they work precisely as they are supposed to, and can provide you the ease and comfort of usage from anywhere in the world, and provide you with the security that you would come to expect from such a device. I know that the Hubitat team are working on new applications and further ways to use the Elevation and family of devices, and I cannot wait to see what additional ways that I can make my life easier, safer, and at the same time, have fun doing so!

I hope everyone is having a nice June, thus far. The heat has definitely started to pump here in the Northeast, and to me, an 80-degree day is hot, regardless of whether the calendar says April or June, so the Air Conditioner technology is getting a full-fledged workout!

That is exactly where I will pick up on...the topic of Technology!

In the day and age of High-Quality Color Printing, one may question why they would need a Monochrome Printer. Well, for example, what if most of your print jobs required just Black and White output? What if you could find a true work-horse that can churn out Black and White printed output at about as fast as you can bat your eyes, and can turn out high-quality scans and copies with sharp images, as well, with a lightning fast fax feature, too? If that's not what you are looking for, keep reading anyway, because you might just realize this was something that can make your life substantially easier!

What am I talking about? The Epson EcoTank ET-M3170 Wireless Monochrome All-in-One Supertank Printer. I have reviewed this unit, and I'd like to share with you what I found in terms of its set up, speed, quality, and features that have impressed me, and will most probably impress you, as well!

SET-UP:

Setting the tone right from the start, this printer was wrapped very well and secure, taped well and secured between to large pieces of foam cushioning to prevent any damage from movement during shipping. It's not a very heavy device, so it is easy to maneuver. Once it was out of the box and unwrapped, etc., I got my first look at a very impressive looking unit, one that looks like it belongs in a high-tech, modern office, which is exactly what you want clients to think if they visit your office (you want them to know that you are on the cutting edge of the latest technology...at least it can't hurt!).

When you fire up the printer, one of the features you notice right away is the vivid, bold-colored touch screen, with razor-sharp fonts, and what I came to find as very well organized (extremely intuitive/very user friendly). But first, the ink.

When you see this bottle of ink, you might panic at first. Don't! It's revolutionary, cutting edge, and will save you a lot of headaches and a lot of money. You have easy access to where you add the ink. It is so easy to twist in the bottle, fill the ink reservoir, and you're done! There is no mess, no spill. It was literally seamless. Once it is filled up, you can visually see the ink level, which should cover you for 6000 pages. Yes, that's a heck of a lot of printing for you without having to add more ink.

After a few minutes of the ink charging up, as directed through the instructions on the printer, you then run through a page alignment test that you just navigate through via clicking through on the menus. Then, after printing up these test pages and selecting the right numbers on the touchscreen to confirm that all is on par with how you want the pages and alignment to look, the next step is the wireless connection.

Setting up the wireless connection was simple, from detecting the Wi-Fi and connecting to it, end to end, it could not be any easier than it was. The Color LCD screen does not have a step out of place in leading you towards complete and perfect configuration of your wireless set-up. The paper capacity of this printer is 250 pages, which should keep you humming along while printing for quite some time. At this point, after loading up the paper tray to almost full capacity, I realized that the time for testing had arrived!

SPEED:

There is no other way to say it; this is one truly fast printer! It zips along at 20 Pages Per Minute (PPM), but at times, it felt as if it was even faster, so I think that is more like an average speed. In one test, I sent 3 consecutive 8-page jobs, and by the time I went to hit send on the next job, the previous job was done! As it's churning along, it has normal operating sounds, which can be almost completely silenced by selecting the Quiet Mode option.

In testing the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), which is incredibly easy to use, I tested the speed of duplex printing (2-sided printing), and I found the speed of that feature quite impressive, as well. Even better, you do not have to feed the paper back for the second side; this is all done automatically for you! Overall, an ultra-fast printer, for standard duty and 2-sided copy, as well. Next, let's take a look at the quality of the printed output, scans, etc.

QUALITY:

When you need to print out sensitive information, critical data, or whatever is important to you enough to render it as printed output, speed is important, but quality, for many, will rank higher between both.

My experience for many years has been on high-end laser printers, and their sharp and crisp printed output, but in reviewing several batches of print jobs I sent through on the ET-M3170, I was very surprised to find that the quality was equal to or even superior to the laser printers I have used for many years, most of which have been on the high-end of the printers offered on the market, in my office and in the offices of various of our clients.

Even just moments after printing, there was no smudging, the characters appeared super sharp on the pages, and the ink on the top of the page and the bottom of the page was uniform, with no alignment issues or differences in shades of the printed black ink. There are an incredible amount of settings that I could have tweaked in order to get my printed output to this point...these options are all included in the LCD Screen menus...but the default output via printing and also copying both exceeded my experienced expectations!

This same pattern goes for the Scanning. Scanning with the unit is very easy to use (very intuitive), and the results were obviously high-resolution scans, with sharp, completely crisp images, that far surpassed that which I have seen from laser-quality Scanners.

Another important feature of this All-in-One Printer is Faxing, which I tested both inbound and outbound. What I found was that after connecting the physical line to send and receive faxes (I tested between a fax machine I have on a different phone number), and found High-Speed faxing results that went out and were received, both of very high quality, with sharp images and text!

Overall, these high-quality results tell me that this Supertank Printer is a high-quality All-in-One Printer that is built for high volume copy, blazing fast speed, and incredibly sharp output! However, there are even more features that I have tested and also found to be incredible components of an overall workhorse!

FEATURES:

The key benefits that most folks are looking for when purchasing a Printer, or really any new technology, are those features that make your life easier, and save you money. I found both of these benefits in testing and reviewing the ET-M3170.

Thanks for joining us today for a review of what you will find to be one of the most interesting devices that we will review together. For those of you that are on the road often (Sales, Marketing, Execs, Small Biz Owners....literally anyone), you will wonder why you have not found a tool like this one sooner!

Probably one of the most important things when you're traveling is your baggage; how heavy your bags are and how much stuff you have inside your bags. If you're traveling with hardware such as a scanner, you can't take one of the large office scanners. They serve their purpose while in the office, but to take them on the road is impractical. Enter the Epson Workforce ES-50 Portable Document Scanner. This small, light, and sturdy portable scanner really fits the bill when traveling for work. When using this scanner, it doesn't take up much space (you just need to leave space behind it for when the paper feeds through the back of it). You don't need power cables because it feeds power directly from the USB port on your laptop, which really is the true indication of portability. It's very simple to use and coupled with the fact that you can carry it in your laptop bag or separately, or even stick it in a drawer if need be for occasional use makes this is a great portable color scanner that is fun to use!

Setting up this device you'll find is a very user-friendly process. Basically, all you're doing is connecting it to your computer and it'll prompt you to download what you need from Epson's website. It's that simple! This download location is also included in your quick start guide. In no time flat you'll be scanning along and being productive.

Multi-tasking is key, so if you are on a call and at the same time, scanning in a document, the last thing you need is the squeaking sound and clicking sound some scanners make. Very annoying and quite disruptive! With the ES-50, all the sounds you will hear is paper as it moves through the scanner! That's it! The speed of the scans is also conducive to multi-tasking, because it took 5, maybe 6 seconds to scan in a document, and then you will see a preview of your scan. If you need to scan multiple pages as part of the same file, just click the button to continue the current scan job. It is that fast and that easy!!

Quality was perfect for the purpose of this portable scanner. Basically, you're going to be scanning in receipts, bills, business cards, and other documents, and you're going to get quality image output in a quick and efficient manner. Even flimsy, beat up receipts will make it through with good quality, even if it looks like they are skewing in one direction while scanning! The software will correct them!

Now, more about this diverse software, which is both Windows and Mac compatible, and is quite a solid program bundled together! Once you have scanned an item, you can view it and save it to a hard drive, send it up to Google Drive, export it to Word, Excel or another program. You're even able to set resolution, image type, and there are some more advanced features like skew and rotating the image, enhancing brightness and such. True, there are a lot of different features to use, and who knows if you even need to use all of them because there are so many of them. However, it is better to have them then to wish you had them, right? A good example here is that I had some documents with marks on them from a binder, and they also had hole punches. I was able to remove those marks, which was pretty cool! Further, there is OCR software (optical character recognition), which allows you to put the output of your scan into searchable PDF files. This is massively helpful for folks that need to categorize and document by customer name or by customer number. You can then search and sort documents by customer name or customer number. Overall a very intuitive suite of software that allows you to scan anything...documents to business cards to receipts...basically, anything!

SUMMARY:

What I really like about this scanner is that once you have the software installed you don't have to go through a process of first opening the software on your laptop and then waiting for it to load up!! As soon as you put a document into the Scanner and you push the button to scan, it will automatically launch the software, which is a huge help. You may not realize it, but when you actually have that feature, it's pretty cool and it becomes almost indispensable...definitely something you don't want to do without.

If you're on the road often, this is definitely the portable scanner to have with you, because it will help you be incredibly productive!

Thank you for joining us today for a very interesting technical product review. We have a unique twist on the technology equipment that we evaluate, with the specific product we are reviewing, which is the Epson FastFoto FF-640 Scanner.

Just some background on this Scanner; it is a fit for not only home office use, but it's also quite useful for the home, as well. Today, we are going to take a look at the FastFoto in terms of the set-up of the scanner, the speed of the actual scanning process, the quality of the scan results, as well as some features and options that I found quite helpful, and you might, as well.

Straight out of the box, the scanner looks non-threatening, and if I had to compare it, I would say it's about the size of a toaster oven. The only thing that you have to do is just snap in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), which is quite simple. Aside from that, the scanner is pretty much turn-key and ready for the software, which is the last step in the set-up. This part is a snap! Super-easy, since you download the software directly via Epson's website. I call it "seamless" since it is so easy. I suggest you download all software offered to you for your given operating system. It's free to download and it will help you take further advantage of the functionality of the scanner.

Guess What? Congratulations! Your Scanner is now configured and ready to begin scanning!

At this point, your scanner is all set up, with software installed, the USB cable connected to your laptop or desktop, and now you're ready to begin using it. As easy as the scanner is to get set up, it's even easier to use!

What I have tested the scanner with was 5 different items; regular photos, Polaroid photos, documents, business cards, and for my own purposes, baseball cards. Automatic folders are set up for you and you name them at the moment right before they actually scan. One amazing feature of this scanner that will "WOW" most folks is that it automatically scans front and back, so if you have handwriting or something on the back of a document or photo that is important to save, it will also scan that as well. The FastFoto will name the front file name with an "a", and the file name for the back will have a "b". Not only does it capture the names, but it also captures the date as well for easier filing and for ease in locating the files long after you have finished scanning.

Another thing that makes this real easy is the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), which you really cannot do without it. It is a critical part of the scanner. Example: I was trying to send some Polaroids through and they were not going through at first but then I resolved it by just placing them in a different way on the feeder, which is very versatile in this specialized type of scanner. On the topic of ease, you can even have the photos border adjusted by simply tweaking the settings, and it even allows you to take out red eyes if they show up in the scan. As for resolution,the FastFoto defaults to 300 DPI resolution but it also has an option for 600 DPI, but remember, and this goes for all Scanners; as you go up in resolution, the time it takes to scan your items will increase, as well.

Speed is another great quality of this scanner. I sent through 20 photos and they were done in about 50 seconds which is blazing fast. The amount of time that it saves you will really impress you! Sometimes, you have to go back and adjust the photos or anything that you've scanned in order to tweak it and make it better, especially if it's a faded out photo; this will correct it. For those folks that scan often and then have to correct the documents or photos, etc afterward, will realize that this is a huge time saver. Just think of how much you will miss Photoshop editing your scanned image files. This might make you tear up over that... or perhaps they are tears of joy? Perhaps both?

Overall it's amazing how accurate the FastFoto is, and that just goes to show you the quality of product that Epson once again has put out on the market. As I mentioned above, the quality is second to none. One of the many features that makes this scanner shine is the auto enhancement, which really does some magical things when you're dealing with photos that are either faded or just very very light, i.e. with sun in the photo, or something bright along those lines. As mentioned, you can select the enhancement option in the settings by changing it to be Automatic, or you can manually do it in the folder that pops up with the app. Just select the image, click on Edit, and you can do many things to enhance your photos.

Yet another great feature of the scanner is that you are able to select whether you want to save the enhanced photo as an original or if you want to make a second copy so you don't overwrite the original, in case you need to make additional changes, from the original version forward. This increases the efficiency and the amount of time saved and headaches saved with the scanner and its accompanying software. I ran into an issue with some baseball cards that would not get a reverse scan. I very easily found out through the intuitive menu that by adjusting the sensitivity settings, the lightness and darkness of writing on the back of the card, completely remedied this and fixed the issue. Any issues you come up with are easily remedied most often by looking in the settings in the software. It's true...it's all right there. I tried another scan test where I loaded up many different photos of different sizes and it scanned all of them seamlessly without even a hint of a "misfeed"! All the while, this scanner is so quiet that you don't even realize that it's working until your originals come out into the front catch. Quiet scanning is perfect in my book!

To sum everything up here, this is an incredibly fast, very smart device with very good software for the user interface and it also is amazing in terms of how you are able to easily edit and enhance photos, either automatically or manually. This is a scanner that can be used to blow through hundreds or thousands of photos that you may have from years back, and catalog them for your family or yourself. Can you imagine a flood or fire and you lose all of those memories? Wouldn't it be advantageous to use the scanner to make a backup, digitally, of all of these treasures? With the option to upload everything to the cloud, you have basically an off-site private copy of all of your precious memories. This will ensure your photos will survive any adverse or damaging conditions that could affect your family photos from years past, because they are saved as your very own personal off-site high-quality front and back scans. The FastFoto makes sense on a number of levels, and it is certainly something you want to take a look at further after reading this review, so you can take the first step towards owning this time saving wonder!

SPOILER ALERT: I'm going to ask you a couple of rhetorical questions, to which I already know the answer:

Do you ever look at hard copy printed receipts and wish you didn't have so much critical paper floating around which fades out a little more each day?

Do you ever wish you could extract data from your receipts and add it into your Accounting software?

Do you think about how life would be so much easier if you could scan your documents directly to a cloud storage service, like Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote, etc?

OK, I just gave you a small preview. Are you excited yet?

The Skinny...

I hope so, because I have had the fortunate opportunity to test and review the new Epson Workforce ES-500WR Wireless Color Receipt Duplex Document Scanner (Accounting Edition), and the features I mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg with this dynamic scanner.

The size of the box is a little confusing at first, and you will be thinking, "Where's the Beef?", but always remember what Aunt Nannie told you..."good things come in small packages"! It's actually the perfect size, because it is compact and you can fit it almost anywhere opened up, and absolutely anywhere when folder closed.

The main step is to get it plugged in, ready for some brutal testing, and to see if this baby can live up to it's beefy specs. While we are on the topic of "Specs", all technical specifications will come at the end of this review, for those tech geeks (just like me!!).

So, knowing the download process can take time with all new devices from all manufacturers, I set this to download the required software. All-in-all, it took me less than 20 minutes to complete the download, and during that time, 1/2 cup of coffee was consumed. It was really good coffee, but the set up was truly very fast for me.

The Epson ScanSmart Accounting Edition is comprehensive, and the Nuance Power PDF software, which helps you create or convert to searchable PDFs, is a game-changer. Further, everything supports TWAIN drivers, so there are no worries about integrating with pretty much any document management software.

The Sizzle...

Now, a huge selling point is the 50-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), and I had some nice tests planned for it. Right away, I took a huge stack of statements, some thick, some wrinkled, some with other markings on them, and they scanned in blazing fast. I did experience one jam, but it was my fault, as there was a small paper clip on a statement (User Error!), but it was better that it alerted me rather than try to run it through and ruin the device.

I then put together the most rag-tag and ugly bunch of bent, folded, creased "scrap" receipts anyone has ever seen. Very smoothly fed into the device, and everything came out perfectly, except for one, but when I took a close look at it, I could not read it myself, so it might not have even been a receipt in the first place. Perhaps a smudge from an older print out? Any way, that bodes for a 100% execution rate for the Scanner.

Now, I took this to the next level; it's really humid here on the East Coast, so I left a few statements on the backyard table for an hour, and of course, they were then sticking together. Instead of taking the paper feed, the scanner notified me of the potential jam, and upon looking this up, apparently it's due to the double-feed detection. When I let the pages dehumidify, I accidentally put them in crooked, and the scanner straightened it out for me. Auto-pilot?

Fast? Understatement. The specs say this scans 35 pages per minute or 70 images per minute, but I think they undercut the true amounts (which I found much higher), just to be on the conservative side, and so people could not complain ("you said 35 pages per minute and I only got 34 pages per minute"). Perhaps I should complain I got 37 pages per minute? Ahh, people...you know who I'm taking about....!!!

The Steak...

I really like how when you do duplex-scanning (double-sided), it will not scan a blank page if that is what is on side 2, and how you can approve the thumbnails as they scan, so you are in total control.

Earlier we spoke about searchable scanned documents, and this is a major feature. You can export these to Excel or your Accounting software, i.e. Quickbooks. As it does this, it has learning capabilities, so I saw it begin to "know" a few logos that were repeating in the statements. This scanner is more like a well-oiled tool to help streamline your accounting process, especially for archiving and storage.

All-in-All, a very quiet, compact, and very attractive tool, that lets you connect with computer, smart phone, or tablet. It is fast, high quality, and helps you reduce your paperwork to the point where it literally reduces clutter and makes life easier. Theoretically, isn't that what we are looking for...to make life easier?

I hope you are all doing well.

I know most of you spend a lot of time on the road, so what I am going to discuss with you today might single-handedly impact the way you work going forward. I had the opportunity to test, evaluate, and review the Epson WorkForce DS-320 Portable Scanner...and the cats out of the bag; I love what I saw!

From the minute I opened up the box and removed the scanner and other items from the box I realized that this thing was built for battle. What I mean by that is this thing could probably take a punch if it had to and keep on going because the structure of it is just so solid. It's really an awesome looking little device.

Setup was a breeze and only took a few moments to get it going. I had to download the drivers for the document software that comes with the Scanner, Twain/Isis Compliant, and needless to say there was no reboot required after installing the software which is always a good thing!

So, once I got this bad boy set up I started to give it my stress test by overloading the document feeder and by being a little rough with the machine. It didn't miss a beat in the scanning job it was working on even though I gave it a little shove while it was scanning and it did not show up in my finished product. This is great because things get moved and bumped when you are on the go with a portable device. As for Speed, I can absolutely positively say that I reached 25 pages per minute all black text full document top-to-bottom pages of writing 25 per minute plugged in on AC. I tried it also via USB power and I did get a little bit less than 25 PPM, so AC power is the way to go with this. The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) I alluded to is quite sturdy and took the overload of pages, because I had double-overloaded it. I wanted to see if it could stand up to the test, but there's no reason to do that; that was just testing the durability of the product to see if it can stand up to that, which is did. By the way....all scanning was whisper quiet!! If you turn your back on it you won't even know that it completed. I wonder if this was intentional, to help those folks on the go since they're going to be in different offices and need a device that would have to keep quiet.

I like the fact that you can toggle between the double-sided printing or non double-sided printing (duplex or non-duplex) by way of the computer. The software is highly intuitive, for example, you can make up parameters for a specific type of scanning profile and use it later on without having to re-create the settings. Simplicity!

Another major benefit of the software is that it is able to save directly to the major Cloud drives, such as Dropbox. That is golden when you are on the road a lot. With that in mind, getting back to what I said earlier about this scanner is built for battle/ready for war, I think of the Road Warriors and that is often the sales staff going back and forth all week to different clients in and out of the office, and this is a sturdy device so if they need scanning, the DS-320 will certainly suit their needs. Obviously, it was built portable with movement between different locations in mind, but it really does work perfectly for folks like sales people who are always on the road.

Further, the fact is you are not tied to just document scanning. You can scan receipts and there is a special slot to slide in your business cards so they are cloud-ready for you. Yet another hugely helpful feature is the OCR capabilities (optical character recognition), which allows you to create searchable PDF files from things that would normally not be searchable.

Overall, the Epson WorkForce DS-320 is a great portable scanner. If you have sales staff on the go or are an on the go salesperson, it would be ludicrous to ignore a device that could become one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal.

Hi Folks,
I hope that you are all enjoying a fantastic Holiday season thus far. I had some unique messages about my last post, both good and mediocre. Nothing bad, which is good, (using up the one daily double-negation that I've allotted for myself!!)

Today, we are going to take a small step away from Rent-to-Own and from Cryptocurrency and even Real Estate, for a few short moments, so that we can discuss a topic we can all agree on, and that is Efficient Document Management. Pay attention to each of those words, as they will hold validity once you've read this post.

Without further intro, I present to you the Epson WorkForce DS-575W Document Scanner, a small package that packs a big punch.

From the moment you open the box and take out the Scanning Unit, especially if you have handled many large scanners and printers, your first thought might be, "Uh Oh". You might wonder how this device that is close in size to a 4-slice toaster can perform to such lofty heights that are claimed in it's technical specifications ("Specs"). You look at it and see that is fits so neatly and does not hog up excessive space and you scratch your head. If you get that feeling, shake it off, it won't last long. The small size and non-invasive space this Scanner takes up is not to be looked at as a weakness, rather, as another benefit in the list....another virtual feather in it's cap.

SET-UP AND GENERAL OPERATION:

Let's first look at Set-up, as I know for those folks not as technical as some of us Geeks, high-end technology can be a little confusing at times. I had a cousin in for the holidays and he's always been in fields where the workers do not need to use technology or devices, so I put him to work as my non-technical tester, and I am obligated to mention that he asked in return that I grill some hamburgers....you know...in 20 degree weather. Being a good sport, I obliged (Brrrr!!).

Anyway, getting back to the point here, I had him follow the steps and he had it up and running in no time flat. You have options to configure the unit via USB or wirelessly, which is great having both options.

Now, at first, I thought the software was dragging it's feet, but I later attributed that to hardware latency on my end. There are a full set of features with the TWAIN Software, like skew remedies and detection of double-feed, which toggles. You can also set up types of jobs and destinations for the finished product, which is great when you talk about "Efficient Document Management".

All I ask is that a software be intuitive, and to be an asset, not a hindrance, and that is exactly what Epson accomplishes, with a full-featured, full-functionality partner to go along with it's short but powerful Scanner.

I touched on this above, because there is an option to toggle (turn on and off) duplicate (simultaneous front and; back) scanning, better known as "duplexing". The Huge 50-page capacity document Auto-Document-Feeder (ADF) is just what the doctor ordered, and with duplex scanning coupled with the software capability to connect the two sides as if they were one, that's pretty darn helpful, folks.

What does this Scanner specialize in? Legal-sized paper, Sheets of paper, receipts (crumpled up receipts, as well), hard-surface laminated papers and documents, It can even take envelopes, and the spectrum of what it can pass through and reproduce digitally seems endless, at a lightning fast clip.. More on Speed and Quality shortly.

Setting up my Android and my cousin's Apple devices were a snap (remember.....from a non-technical point-of-view as well as technical).

I can truly say that we gave this Scanner quite a workout, loading up the ADF to capacity with all shapes and sizes, and through it all, aside from when kicking off a scan, proceeded through with a very low decibel footprint.

SPEED:

The speed of this unit made me go, "WOW". Again, I go back to seeing the size of the Scanner and being shocked, but then to see this thing churning out docs at a 35 pages per minute speed made me do a test and saw me exceed that by 3 pages, albeit pages with only 60% text coverage.

Speed is nice...but the finished product is really for all the marbles. How did that wind up going?

QUALITY:

Look, we scanned photos, prints, and some thick items, wondering if there would be smudged looking digital output...I mean there had to be some give-and-take to even out the sheer lightning-fast speed of the Scanner. But there wasn't. After setting our dpi and changing it every so often to test. Hi Folks,
I have some great news to share after testing and reviewing a very impressive new Scanner from Epson, the Epson WorkForce ES-500W, which is a Wireless Duplex Document Scanner. I know that sounds like a mouthful of jargon, but I think it might actually fall short of truly describing this powerful new beast on the block.

Ease/ēz/noun definition "absence of difficulty or effort".

"Ease" is the most appropriate word that comes to mind at then end of my testing battery that I have put this unit through. Let us take a look at how this Scanner impresses, starting at Set-up, Scanning, a discussion of speed and quality, and some cool features that come along with the ES-500W. At the end, I'll give you the full Technical Specifications.

As you unbox the unit, you'll find it is incredibly secured between multiple different protection systems, and when finally removing all of the much-welcomed cushioning, you get your first look at this compact, neatly-folding unit. No need to dedicate a new wing in your office or home office...this unit jives with your office space, especially when you are trying to economize on space.

Starting with the Set-up, connecting the ES-500W to my Wi-Fi was a snap, and probably took under 5 minutes to complete. I follow the instructions to the letter so that I can point out any issues I notice, but the directions were on point and quite user-friendly. After a quick install of the software, I was all set up and ready to test!

Now the real fun happens; Scanning. The "Ease" of scanning amounts to literally opening the Capture Software, placing your document in the feeder, and clicking SCAN. This is just for one document, however, you can place up to 50 pages on the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), and WOW, does that reduce a lot of back and forth and eliminates swapping out page by page. It's an immense time saver. Page size can vary from small to legal size. Further, you can take hard copy paper documents and turn them into editable files that can also be searchable, thanks to the included Optimal Character Recognition (OCR) Software. The Scanner is also TWAIN compatible, which will help it interface with many of the most popular document programs and systems that are in use today.

Speed? Quality? What's the end result?

With speeds I tested and verified by using the ADF, the unit hits up to it's advertised 35 ppm/70 ipm. Now, folks, that is blazing fast. Not only is it fast in comparison to a lot of the other products on the market today, from comparing the Specs, but there is no compromising on the quality of the output, especially the images. The option to change the DPI is there for you, but the quality of the image output without tweaking any settings whatsoever had me impressed. Using the defaults the output looks that good? Really? Yes...it was good enough to impress a 25+ year technology veteran who has pretty much seen it all in my time!

5 Features I really liked about the ES-500W

I loved the compact nature of the Scanner, the speed, and the output quality, but there were a few other cool features I wanted to mention:
1. You have the ability to turn on or off the multi-page detector, which is a blessing when you are doing a lot of "Onesies", or 1-page scans, separately.
2. Without more than a couple of clicks, right out of the box, this Scanner integrates literally & seamlessly with cloud and note Apps, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and Evernote, among others.
3. The gift of Duplex: For 2-sided pages, you do not have to flip and re-scan the page. It is all done in one quick pass. Time-Saver!!
4. One App will allow you to scan documents into your Smart Phone after connecting to the same Wi-Fi as the Scanner!
5. I love how you can scan bulky business ID Cards, as well as all-types of business cards, receipts, and documents with extra long pages. This feature literally crosses multiple demographics in one felt swoop!

In closing, for folks running a small business, those who work out of a home office, or folks who are habitual scanners for some reason or another, this is a scanner that fits all types of users. From the compact nature of the machine, to the speed, quality, and funky extra features, it's easy to see how Epson just dominates the market through quality products, such as the ES-500W. There is just a certain "feel" when using this unit, as I have felt on previous Epson offerings, which is a feel that is not even closely matched by similar types of products offered by their competition. Epson, I tip my technical hat to you one again. You have managed to WOW me with quality, and I am glad now to share this glowing experience with the good folks that faithfully read my blog.

Hi Folks,

I've got some really exciting information today that can totally help anyone or any business. The folks that I have foremost in mind here are the multitude of clients who are graphic designers, architects, builders, and appraisers. But there are more of you that can find the help you need from this latest offering from Epson.

Looking back over the past few reviews I've done, I picked up on a common thread amongst a segment of the population of my readership. That thread is simply the need to go beyond the standard 8.5" x 11" printing format. You have blueprints, plans, layouts, contracts, but printing out and jigsaw-puzzling them together has not been right for you. I do take the time to read my mails and your personal private comments. It just took a little time to zone in on what I could review for you that would make you super-happy. I think we're there now.

I have had the pleasure of testing out and reviewing the latest offering from Epson: The EPSON WorkForce ET-16500 EcoTank Wide-Format All-in-One SuperTank Printer. There are a few buzz-words here that are relevant to many readers, but for those I singled out as a group needing to print larger documents, please note the words, "Wide-Format". This printer can print up to 13"-by-19" ("supertabloid"), and can scan/copy multiple pages of 11"-by-17" paper, as well as 2-sided documents. Rejoice, my good friends in the "Wide Format" world.

Without further delay, let's go through this in an orderly process, starting with Filling the Ink Tanks, then Connecting to WiFi, Enabling Wi-Fi Direct Mode, Mobile Printing, Printing via Mac/OS X, Wide Format Printing, Scanning, Use of the Automatic Document Feeder, and I'll leave you with the Technical Specs at the end.

A quick word of caution: This printer is one big fella, so a word to the wise: Bend your knees when un-boxing this...use your legs and not your back. Once you have the box open, it's easy to locate the ink as well as the gloves. I totally suggest using the gloves, as you can avoid staining. The gloves are a nice "ergonomic nicety" that Epson provides, showing that they have a grip on the human side of technology. Filling the tanks was a snap, and there is no mess left behind. Once filled to their capacity with the provided ink, these tanks can generate about 10,500 black and 11,000 color pages, and you have about 2 years of ink with the unit. WOW. Think of all of the hassles of buying, stocking, and inserting new cartridges, then performing nozzle checks and cleaning the print head. Then the extra waste from all of the used ink cartridges. Oh, yes, and the astronomical cost per cartridge. Let's not forget that. SuperTank and EcoTank are very appropriate names, you realize, as you run down the cost savings, savings on labor/waiting, and the lessened footprint on the environment by generating less waste!

After a short period (10 minutes) of the printer internally adjusting itself for the first time to it's topped off 4 bays of ink (red, cyan, yellow and black), we were off to testing. First order of business was connecting to the Wi-Fi, which was intuitive and quite instant. The screen on the printer is a very comfortable 4.3" Color Touchscreen that is sleek-looking and is visible with sharp characters and good contrast for folks who use contact lenses and glasses, like I do.

The ET-16500 has two trays that take 8.5" x 11" paper as well as 11" x 14" paper. After loading up some paper into one of these main bays, I enabled the Wifi-direct mode and created a new password, which was a snap. I set my Android phone (Android Print to connect to the printer, and within moments, I was printing from my phone. Super-convenient process! Easy stuff, folks. It seems with each release, Epson seems to be reading our minds and getting the jump on speeding up the process and m

A quick disclaimer that I am not Mac or OS X Savvy, however, in following the directions, I was able to pull down the driver software I needed on my MacBook and within minutes, I was able to connect and print with relative ease and quite seamlessly. Good news for the Apple folks out there!

Now, the moment you have been waiting for!. Testing the process, speed, and quality of Wide-Format Printing. In preparation for this, I stopped by the office of one of my clients to pick up the exact Wide Format paper they use for their corporate documents, which turned out to be 13" x 19". This size paper is referred to as "super tabloid paper", which is quite critical in the architectural field (as my client is an architect), and also in many other fields such as graphic design, builders, etc. The rear specialty-paper feed is easily used here for the large-format paper we are using. Did I mention that during this phase of testing my wide-format printing client, James, came back here to look over my shoulder (as he reads my review, I sincerely hope he is still smiling!). With him loading up the file to be printed and to be the judge for quality and speed, we sent the job to print. It's not a decibel shattering noise, but you certainly know when the printing starts and finishes.

What were the results? Well, as James states it, the results were "outstanding" and exceeded his "stark expectations" based on what is available in the market today. With an office back in his native London, England, as well as in California and New York, each office has had to contract out to have their Wide-Format printing needs met. The only part of the process they maintain control over is providing the paper to the printing house that runs the Wide-Format print jobs for them to at least reduce some of the costs. Thus the reason for my journey to his office for that specific paper size. Anyway, James tells me that he bears costs in each city with 3 different Mom and Pop printing shops, and it's a disaster. He has not been able to find a Wide-Format printer meeting his needs, therefore, he has had to maintain the clunky process in place and the extreme costs, as well.

Basically, James told me to trust him on this evaluation of the printer, as has tested many other top name units that produced "utterly deplorable" results, as he calls them. He said I could walk through endless streets and I will not be able to find a wide-format printer like this that showed him such "lucid colors" and "sharp text" that exceeds output of even a laser-printer. Printing was refreshingly quick to him, and taking into account waiting for the delivery of printed output to his doorstep will be a thing of the past with this unit. I was impressed, and seeing the light bulb of "WOW" go on in my client made me thankful to Epson for allowing me to test this and lighten the path of an important client.

My client does not have a flair for the dramatic, mind you, but he said this changes his entire lifestyle with the impact this will have on him and his 250 employees. When James took the printed output with him to discuss scrapping the print shops with his junior business partner, I decided to open the stop-watch app on my phone and test the regular black and also color speeds of 8.5" x 11" output, and I actually exceeded the ppm figure provided by Epson, which were 18 ISO ppm (Black) and 10 ISO ppm (Color). That is quite fast!

Now, let's discuss the Scanner side of the ET-16500. In testing out the Scanner, I was able to produce some high quality output, with the potential to get up to 2400dpi. If you know your photo resolution numbers, that is a huge amount of dots per inch. I successfully tested the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), a seamless feature that makes life so much easier for everyone! I tested 2-Sided Copying and 2-Sided Scanning, and both work like a charm. I was able to produce nothing less than high-quality output on paper sizes up to 11" x 17", which I tested, along with 8.5" x 11". The output on Glossy Photo Paper will bowl you over, but seriously, not far behind is the output on Plain Paper, which is equally as vibrant and precise.

Overall, this printer was a joy to test, evaluate, and review. After your initial outlay for the printer, if you do the math, it is not long until this printer starts paying you back in ink savings, time/hassle savings, and perhaps even in other areas of your business that I didn't even realize, as with James and his breakthrough moment with the ET-16500. I have at least 20 other clients in similar businesses and situations as James, and this will be a huge Home Run for them, as well. Do you want to say goodbye to the ink cartridge process, the hassles, the costs, etc? Whether you sell homes or baseball cards or have a lemonade stand, there will always be a need for Wide-Format output at some point. This printer puts you in an exclusive club, with fellow professionals that have had it with the contemporary "closed box of thought" about what to expect from their Network Printers, and are seizing the opportunity to raise the bar for themselves and their business. Well, let me start out by stating the obvious; we all live complex lives, between work, family, and other additional business ventures that we may pursue in life. The end result of this, regardless of the digital age that we live in, is paper. Lots and lots of Paper. I often feel I could take 2 days per month from start of day to end of day, just for the purpose of filing and keeping myself organized. The fantastic opportunity to test out the new Epson DS-530 Color Duplex Document Scanner came at an ideal time, which is when I am at the point of literally using a shovel to move paperwork into neat piles. The Task: To make some genuine progress in organizing a seemingly never-ending pile of receipts (some of which are fragile strips of paper), contracts, voluminous project management documentation, business cards from new business prospects, tax documents, and many other such types of physical copies that I've accumulated over just the past few months alone. The Focus: Testing out the Epson DS-530 Color Document Scanner, and reporting to you on the level of ease or difficulty of Set-up, the speed and quality of various types of required output (those of which I identified above), and then, examining and sharing with you some of the additional bells and whistles that come along with this newest offering from the folks at Epson.Scanner Set-Up: Just as I figured from previous experience testing Epson products, Un-boxing and connecting your new DS-530 is a snap. A few blinking lights and a few beeps and immediately you are ready to get to work. Scanner Speed and Quality: I figured I'd start with the "easy" part, which were a couple a hundred pages of documentation I have across 6 different contractor agreements. I loaded up the Automatic Document Feeder with its capacity of 50 sheets, set it to scan, and in not even 2 minutes, perhaps it was about 90 seconds, the job completed! I was amazed at the speed, and when I took a glance at the documentation, I noticed why: the unit will scan 35 pages per minute (ppm) in grayscale, black, and color modes. Further, I noticed some of the remaining 150+ pages I had were dual-sided, with information on both sides. With the DS-530, this is not a problem, as I watched the scanner scan both sides in one pass! I know it is a high-powered duplex scanner, but high powered might seriously be a slight understatement! Some additional items I needed to scan were partially laminated, such as high-end business cards and some small placards, which had bulky sections. I was a little uneasy, thinking it might get stuck. Sure enough, these units are engineered in a way to avoid or prevent any jams! Before I knew it, I had these scanned in, as well. The item I left for last, since I desperately did not want them getting chewed up or ripped, were my business expense receipts, some of which were pretty mangled from wear, and a few, I am ashamed to admit, went to the dry cleaners and were in a box there for me to pick up when I picked up my dry cleaning. These took a beating, but were still legible, so I took a chance. I was not aware until reading the documentation that there was a slow speed as a mode when you had fragile documents or papers. It treated the receipts with excellent care and the scanned copies are now ready for tax time.Additional features: One of the best features is that you can create searchable PDF files or you can make editable files for Word and Excel. This was a handy feature, as I like to mark the copies with what expense designation each item falls under, and it made it super easy for me to do. Another great feature is the ability to scan to cloud file hosting providers, such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Evernote. I am a Dropbox person, and being able to organize our business files in our Dropbox for Business account is priceless! The Epson DS-530 Color Duplex Document Scanner seems to handle anything you can throw at it. No job is too large, too small, or too delicate to be processed by this scanner. I was very impressed with this scanner, and found it to be a great assistant in terms of helping me be more productive. It has saved me an unimaginable amount of time, and when you are running a business, if technology saves you enough time to get back to business, wouldn't you place a value on that technology? What about if the time that the technology gave back to you would come close to being of equal or more value vs. the price value of that technology, just within a few short weeks or a couple of months? That is the kind of productivity I am talking about here, and you should seriously consider one of these scanners for your business. Hi Friends and Fellow Investors,

They say it's good to dwell on the positive things in life, but sometimes, it's healthy to hop over to the dark-side for a bit and reflect on some of the wacky (but with good intentions) advice I've received over the years regarding Real Estate, from buying to selling to investing. I'll share some of these events chronologically so you can appreciate the time and setting in which I was the recipient of these tidbits of advice.

Well, a little over 20 years ago, my aunt and uncle used to come over to my apartment at the time a couple of times per week, and they always found me going over the Real Estate section looking for properties. They said I probably spend too much time rsearching and seeing properties. At one point, my Aunt suggested that I should focus on work and just slow down and enjoy life. Why was that bad advice? "Slow down" is the opposite of what a 22-year old should be doing, and "enjoyment" of life is different in every person's own eyes. I worked hard through college and graduated with the equivelant of a 90-degree average to earn my Bachelors Degree. I studied ridiculous hours (ADHD - you have to really cram the information in there!), but wow, did I party, as well! I managed to work during school and sock away some good money, and just had my first home under a Rent to Own Contract, and it was addictive. So, the breaking news on that advice they gave me is that I was very proud of my achievements in school and my initial step into Real Estate Investing. Now, fast forward, and they are now aware that my days of reading the Real Estate section of the newspaper (Pre-Internet "Stone Age" Days) have led me on the path I am on. That little "hobby" of mine has been working out pretty darn good. I make sure to bring up the Real Estate market whenever I see them, as it puts a happy smile on my face. You see that? Real Estate does bring smiles!

During the early 90's, I had been evaluating some developments in Central Florida. I had conflicting advice from some fellow investors. I was warned by some as if I was to avoid the bubonic plague to not throw a single penny into these developments. Of course, I did not heed that advice. Good thing, because a simple investment of $2050 became an equity stake of $35,000 by the mid 90's, and I cashed out. Listen to your little voice inside.

During that same time, I did take bad advice two times, and paid the price for it. The first time, I was advised by two investors who followed the New England market very closely via publications that they ordered in those pre-Internet times. They told me to put everything behind a property in Connecticut, so I invested. As it turns out, somebody missed out that there was a toxic waste/Sewage treatment plan not far away, and the smell kept people from buying in. The place folded and the wrecking ball came in, and I kissed my investment goodbye. Needless to say, I phased out those two woodpecker investors from my circle!

The second time, I had my eyes on a promising piece of land in Maine, in a sectio I was not at all familiar with, but the property adjacent and surrounding tripled in value over 4 years. I needed to get in touch with some local investors, and I made contact with a friend of a friend, and this fella was like a book of everything in that section of Maine. My funds were ready to invest and I was excited. He was so dead-set against this property, saying it was rocky and hard to develop, and showed me a letter from the County actually asking him to invest in it, along with his polite letter of proposal rejection he sent to them in reply. He seemed reasonable in his arguments against the property. Fast forward all of these years, and I am still quite upset with myself for that bad advice, because I missed out on a hotel and a strip-mall, and a price appreciation of more than 25x my would-be invesment! Oddly, I lost "Mr. Maine's" phone number. It's still a mystery today as to how I could have lost it.

So, as you can see, I dodged some bullets, but got caught between the eyes with some others. I remember a friend in the industry warning me not long ago about investing in too many different states. He failed to realize that to ignore hot properties that you have people on the ground you trust to manage it for you is akin to business suicide. Locking yourself into just one market is like putting all of your money on a winning horse. Once he breaks a leg, then what?!

Overall, as I said in the beginning, all of this advice was done with good intentions, but still, that was just some of the worst advice I've ever received about Real Estate.

Hi Friends,
I welcome you back to another of these (fortunately) well-received Blog Posts on Technology, as I am always on the hunt-down for new technology and new gadgets that will make your business run more efficiently, and make you happy, if you like that sort of stuff. I have been asked (not badgered, really...just asked) by a number of clients that make up my readership to continue focusing on technology, as it is helping them immensely. I have also exchanged E-mails with many of you requesting more on-topic items such as the Rent to Own Market, so everyone will be glad to know they are all being granted their wish, and we have some cool Real Estate posts forthcoming.

With that being said, today we are going to take a journey from the past into the present, with a very sophisticated twist on how we to use a printing feature that most overlook, and wind up paying more for that ambivalence in the long run.

If I told you I was reviewing a Monochrome (Black and White Printer), you might think I was crazy. However, if you told me you print everything from your to-do list and your own personal notes in color, every day, I might turn around and say that you, my friend, might be the crazy one.

Well, the cat is out of the bag, and the printer I present to you today is like no other one you have seen before. Sure, in your past, you might remember those old workhorse Black and White Printers that were scattered among offices, which could produce large output. But looking back, do you remember the smudging? The low-quality look of the characters that usually came out in Arial or Times New Roman, and you knew there had to be better than this. Then came Color Printers, and everyone got hooked on them, since they could also print black and white, as well as color. But color was shiny and new, and you got hooked.

Back to the present day, and I present to you the Epson WF-M5694, a sleek new offering from Epson that captures the spirit of the work-horse printers of the past, while putting an edge and a spin on this printer that you never would have imagined possible. From a person with a technical background spanning a little over 20 years, I, personally, was quite impressed! Let's examine the Set-up, Speed, Quality, features, and how this printer can save you money from multiple angles. Then we'll wrap it all up with the full Technical Specifications at the end.

Setting this baby up was easy as can be, and I had a non-technical friend run through the set up to keep things honest here by verifying that I didn't just geek my way through it. Instantly connected it to my Wi-Fi and loaded up the paper, checked out the ink to get a good look at it and installed it. Locked and loaded and ready to print.

That was an understatement. I half-expected the print job to come out section by section and quite slow, as that as what I was conditioned for from years back. Was I ever wrong! The pages came out blazing fast, and apparently, the speed of pages of text can approach 20 pages per minute, which comes out to about 3 seconds per page. I had a stopwatch and I was close to if not eclipsing that speed. Nice! That will let you knock down some hefty print jobs while making some big savings (I will explain shortly).

Printing using the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) makes life so much easier than doing page by page copying, and it does a step further, as it also Auto-duplexes, saving you from having to flip the pages over for the other side to get it's share of the print job. What I also found very cool with the printer was how they are paying attention to the ability to print from specific devices, for example, Amazon Kindle Printing, Google Cloud, Apple, and Android Printing. These are also is a snap to get working.

How about the quality? I tried all of the functions, and wound up with high-quality printed output of scanned items and general printing items and copies. I was happy to find everything had crisp lettering, that, I might add, will not smudge even when shaking the paper back and forth violently like a lunatic! As another test, I sprinkled a few drops of H20 on it, and sure enough, it is water resistant as well!

Now, the ink that is used is DURABrite (Ultra Pigment ink), and they say you can get about 10,000 printed copies before ever having to change the cartridge. Please read that line again. I'm not kidding. Additionally, the efficiency of this printer is guided by the leap-years ahead PrecisionCore Printing Technology. The Printer is so efficient that it uses up to 70% less power than laser printers. Did you just hear a big "BOOM!" in the Accounting department? The Controller just fell of their chair after hearing that. This is some serious technology here, folks. Did I mention it can handle 45,000 pages per month?

The real benefit I see here is from my own personal experience visiting with clients, where they print absolutely everything in colored ink, and in actuality, at least 50% of their jobs could be done in Monochrome.

However, one could argue, with validity, that it does not make sense to overburden those current color printers with massive Monochrome and Color Print Jobs. The current alternative points to their in-place hardware; but the Monochrome printers that plenty of offices do have in many of their locations are dated often by 10 years or more. This brings us into a whole new category of costs currently being incurred, as these decade-old printers are terribly inefficient in terms of Power Usage (if this printer can approach a 70% more efficient level than a Laser Printer, than compared to the 1990's Monochrome printers, the level would probably approach triple digits in terms of increased efficiency/less power usage, from what I am calculating here). Just as important is the replacement cost of old hard-to-find probably refurbished/refilled ink cartridges vs. brand new easy-install cartridges for the WF-M5694. Then there is the obvious remaining factor; the smudgy dated output vs. the crisp and clean, sharp output that you upgrade to with this printer.

So, in closing, I end with a question; If you could potentially lower power usage/costs by replacing the older monochrome printer(s) with the WF-M5694, taking a load off your current central hub color printer(s), and start producing the monochrome copies you really need with super-efficient ink usage, along with one more benefit (that nobody needs to wear the ink that rubbed off onto their hands and clothes from Mr. Jones' inter-office Memo), then would it all be worth the change?

Hi Folks, Over the past weekend, I've had the pleasure of testing out one of Epson's top-of-the-line Projection units, the EX9200 Pro Wireless WUXGA 3LCD Projector. I can hear a whole segment of you saying, "finally". I know who you are, and the functionality you desire, along with that of many other folks out there, was the focus of this very review. We're going to take baby steps, as there is a lot to cover here, but I thank many of you for your E-mails, telling me you prefer how I did the last review, by adding in the relevant specs as we go, so we'll stick with that. Our journey will take us through Compatibility and Set-Up, Ease of Use, Quality, Portability, and then we'll go over some additional cool factors and wrap it all together for you. With these times the way they are, everything starts with the mobile phone, so after unboxing the projector, I got my mobile connected to the projector. All I needed to do was scan one of those little QR codes and I was connected. The setup was pretty straightforward I got it up and running fast, with a fast coffee break in-between. Seriously, within a few minutes, everything was connected up. Now, all of the connectors are on the back panel of the projector, which keeps up with the need to manipulate the device during the presentation. A very important and quite handy feature is that it does support HDMI ports, which should be standard for most Projection units now, but a quick scan online does not show not all Manufacturers are at that point yet. Odd. Additionally, it will connect to your laptop, PC, or if you have a Mac to connect directly. If you have a standard USB port in your system, it will connect to them. Cables such as the USB cable is included in the box. It's basically USB plug and play compatible with your PC or your Mac (as long as it has the interfaces on it, as mine did, for testing),Overall, there's plenty of compatibility built into the EX9200,and it shows Epson really did their homework on this one. This unit also has a VGA port, RCA and Composite video ports, some of these name you may be familiar with from having an older television or an older VCR unit, however, they still come in quite handy for folks that may have equipment not 100% up to today's standards, and this can prevent an "Oops" moment when a visiting client wants to attach a vintage laptop to the projector! Additionally, the system has built-in Wi-Fi for wireless connections to your tablet, etc. As far as from the Compatibility and Set-up, this gets an A-Plus...Straight Out of the Box, no mess no fuss, simple as pie. This particular projector is no exception to that. The ability of the EX9200 to utilize Wireless Technology allows you the ease and freedom to move around anywhere within your conference room, for example. Additionally, another great feature that makes your day that much easier is the fact that you can take videos and share them directly from your phone or tablet or laptop, because the EX9200 supports MHL enabled devices (including Chromecast, which is very useful, since a lot of folks use that in today's world. There is also a Remote Control, to further enhance your experience, and which allows you to move freely about your conference room. The control is intuitive, and is in-line with Epson's Straight-forward End-User facing dialogue/language. But I'm the head geek here, so I do, and I contacted my friend who has one and we were able to verify the amount of lumens, or the brightness of the projector, as we came within a 3% range of the quantity of lumens stated in the documentation. Very impressive! So, basically the quality of any projector is really based around the brightness and the balance between the light, white light and the color light. This unique balance is what helps bring high resolution images. Interesting story; I'm an avid collector of coins and baseball cards, as many of you know my CardboardandCoins.com website. So basically, I spent quite some time using the different connections and settings while looking over coins. One coin I had up was really a mess (you cannot clean them...it's taboo in coin collecting). That particular coin was always impossible to read, even at 60x power, however, once projected as an image I took of the coin, I was able to make out all features of the coin that I never saw before. Albeit a small image I used, the projector really went to work on it, because the writing on the coin was equivalent at that point to 3 or 4 point printing. Not normally visible across a room, but this shows a tight system with incredible eye for detail. As for video quality, Aces all-around. The best part was streaming and not seeing the quality compromised by any means, as I switched Mode -to -Mode. I also experienced the joy of new eye-sight once again in being able to read small print on the projection at small sizes. Once again, I'm still pretty shocked as I was able to see such small detail with just black and white in earlier testing with whitish background. Now, if you run a Sports Card Shop, for example, and let's say you were looking to have a protection unit going and images or video streaming in high resolution, this should certainly be a projector for you. If you are a Realtor, for example, if you are the host in the targeted client seminar, you may want to jump back and forth between a couple of properties to have a high-resolution image cast for them. In summary, I'd just like to say that it was a pleasure testing with all of you. I, personally, was not aware of the true high-resolution, high level of brightness, the easy compatibility, and all the wonderful features that would be available. The EX9200 projector is certainly a unit that you would be proud of in an office to own and use in front of clients and it shows that you are Cutting Edge and ahead of the Curve and it is also efficient, in that it does not require too much in the form of user intervention, aside from the person operating the projector. With the benefits you derive from using the EX9200, I can only hope that it brings you scores of new business and clients.

Today, I'd like to share with you my review of the new Epson WorkForce DS-510 Color Document Scanner. I've tested a wide range of Scanners, so I have a pretty good base of what to look for and what not to look for when running an evaluation. The main things we're going to look at today are the size of the scanner, the setup process, output speeds, output quality, and finally, some additional features and benefits where we'll break it all down for you. I'll add in the relevant specs to each section as we go forward.

The first thing we'll look at here today is going to be the size of this baby, and let me tell you something; do not let the size fool you! This is one tough machine and it is quite sturdy. The only way to really capture what I'm describing is to say that it's small and powerful and the best part is where I have my electronic devices is a very limited space and the Epson DS-510 fit perfectly in that area and left me additional room, as well. Just leave ample height above it so when you expand it out when using it you will have plenty of clearance. This gets an A-Plus for space-saving.

As far as Set-up, I found it very easy to accomplish. Now, I am a technician by heart, so I had an associate here who's a little less technically geeked-out than I am, and I had them take a quick run through the setup as a test and they made it through with flying colors. It was very easy connecting it to my laptop and my desktop and the instructions were easy and very straightforward for all levels of technical ability. A+ on the Set-up process!

Now when it comes to speed, this is quite a fast little machine. Along with its automatic document feeder that holds 50 sheets of paper, this machine blazes along at 26 PPM for black and white, color, and gray. This is a pretty impressive speed, and you'll notice the speed difference between this and a lot of other models that claim to have such a high speed there's a difference because it appears Epson is actually living up to the specs that it's including with its documentation. I tested this with a stack of documents and scanning was incredibly quick and I was very impressed and it really saved me a lot of time because the other device that I was using is really slow and this sped things along quickly. Definitely an A+ on the speed of this scanner.

Next let's look at the quality of the scanned output. What is produced by this scanner are quality, clear, picture-perfect scan results. Whether you're scanning a single-page document, using the duplex function of the scanner, or any of the other great features, the experience is incredible with fantastic text recognition and great document management all across the board. There is nothing but quality output to be had by all. Once again it may sound repetitive, but it's an A+ for quality.

Let's take a look at a few more notes about the DS-510 that will prove helpful in your daily routine. The Epson works extremely well for both two-sided document and multiple page documents, and one of the key factors that I found very helpful here was that you can create PDF files and you have an option where to save the files to once the document is scanned. The PDF feature helps you decide where you can save documents in PDF format. and is excellent for document storage and retrieval at later times and especially if you have a document library in your network. This provides you an excellent value for your money and can pay you back a thousand times over when you need to find that critical document, for example, the signed Real Estate contract, and you just don't know where that piece of paper is or where you saved that critical file.

In summary, the Epson DS-510 has exceeded all of my preconceived expectations for the scanner, not only due to it's easy setup, the compact size, the speed, the quality, and all the extra little features like the PDF and document storage feature, but also the price being so competitive for such a diverse product that can bring you such a dramatic change in the efficiency of your office that can translate into the bottom line. When you take all of these features into account, you begin to wonder how you were able to get along without it for so long. Overall kudos to Epson for another quality product. The quick quality output coupled with the price that is a bargain for this type of device, you're looking at a home run. Whether it's for your home office or small to medium-sized office, it's a great device that will help you scan all your files and documents and get them all centralized.

Welcome back!

As you might already know from my previous Blog Posts, I have tested a wide variety of Epson WorkForce printers, so I believe that my vast experience in reviewing these has now granted me the honor of reviewing the most advanced printer Epson has produced, in my opinion, the Epson ET-4550.

The full title of the printer is the Epson WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank, which is a 4-in-1 Supertank with Wireless & Ethernet, serving as a Color Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax. It is affectionately referred to as "Supertank", and you'll soon see why. I'll have to warn you in advance to watch out for any goofy references to Thanksgiving, as this review is being done the later portion of the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

So, in order to give you an idea what angle Epson is coming from with this printer, I ask you to think back and remember what a hassle it is/was buying new ink cartridges, right? Remembering the model #, pricing it out, and ultimately, paying a fortune. Then we thought we found a shortcut with those refill kits, which were great, saved us money, and the ink was perfect. Sshhh! Epson was on to us the whole time, because the Supertank comes equipped with what's akin to fill-able cartridges in it. It starts with a large bay on the right side of the printer, where you load each bottle of ink into the corresponding "sub" bay. The ink is then automatically fed through tubes as needed. Very cool concept and very cutting edge. OK, let's get dirty. It's time for the ink!

I opened the multiple bottles of ink provided, and I realized that this thing will be ready for battle with this amount of ink straight out of the box! I then put on the rubber gloves that were provided and began filling the tanks. This gave me sort of a "mad scientist" gleam. I felt evil for a while, but that feeling subsided fast when I realized I spilled some ink and got some on my arm. Note: No white shirts when refilling, and nothing near the carpet. So, with the tanks loaded up, I now felt confident and excited about testing out such a unique piece of technology.

When this baby was locked and loaded with ink and paper, that's when the fun began. Faster than you can say, "Turkey leftovers" (don't say I didn't warn you!), this machine was humming along.
They claim 13 ppm for black ink, but when the clock hit 60 seconds, I had a 14th page out and a 15th page mid-stream. These were full, black single-spaced text pages (letter-sized paper) with no images, so I took this printer to task.

Printing in Color was a snap and vibrant. I printed a Team Photo of my favorite baseball team and there was no smudging or running. It was truly at or above laser-printer quality.

Now, this Supertank comes with enough ink to print 11,000 Black ink pages or about 8500 color pages. You may wind up waiting 1-2 years to buy new ink, based on your printing capacity/requirements. That is a lot of ink capacity, thus the "Super-tank" name.

In my mad scientist mode, I skipped some important facts you should know about the setup
* Setting up Wi-Fi direct was quite easy and was as simple as the set up on the other WorkForce printers I have tested.

I set up the print quality settings, which was a snap, and very easy using the screen on the printer.

Now, we begin testing some of the most important features that are required by folks nowadays:
* Email Printing: Printing 101, very simple and easy to do, and very important to many folks, including myself. Intuitive and straightforward.

Remote Printing: From out and about I sent a Print job, and when arriving back, the print job was waiting right there for me!
Scan to the Cloud: Very easy to follow the instructions and scan documents to save in your online storage (Dropbox, etc). Very handy, as well.
Android Printing: Used my Android on Wifi and Remotely to properly and easily print a document.
Apple AirPrint: I'm not too Apple savvy, however, I did get this to work, with a few steps in between.

I consider myself a geek among geeks, as I absolutely love testing out new technology, and I enjoy it thoroughly. Add to this the factor that this technology might be the solution my readers and clients are looking for, and that enjoyment turns to bliss.

So, on that note, I am feeling blissful today, as I've just tested a great new document scanner by Epson, their model DS-520. In last weeks Blog Post, we discussed the DS-560 model, so I will reference that review if necessary here.

In a linear fashion, we'll look at the Set Up and Basic Usage, some Cool Features, and then I'll give you the Technical Specifications.

Set Up and Basic Usage:

The DS-520 was just as easy to set up as the DS-560. Very straightforward. Easy to connect to the network, boom, done in an instant. I call that true Plug N Play!

To help out in the speed and ease-of-usage department, there's a 50 sheet automatic document feeder that's built in which helps you just blow through scanning jobs. It's literally constructed perfectly for this device, and I am drawing upon my past experiences and tests on non-Epson products.

OK, this scanner is fast, with speeds of 30 pages per minute (ppm) or 60 images per minute (ipm). It's one of those situations where you turn around and the job is already done scanning, which is a great feature to have in a busy office. I am a very big fan of speedy technology! I even ran a few scans in duplex (passing both sides simultaneously in just one pass), and the speed and quality were perfect. I've seen bleed-through before on Duplex copies from other machines (not Epson machines), so this was a relief.

Cool Features:

One of the coolest features about the DS-520 is that you can scan in documents which you can then save as searchable. It is very cool and a big time saver when you're looking for just the right documents and you just don't know where to find it!

Another super-helpful feature that I found with this device was the advanced image adjustments that you are able to do, including color enhancement and color dropout. I was scanning in some documents with images and playing around with a couple of different colors and changing them out. Intuitive and Versatile!

Sharing is caring, and with the DS-520, it's very easy to share your documents. Just as easily, you can send your document to the cloud, all with the push of a button.

Finally, I love that you have the option of scanning ID Cards and Hard Plastic cards, just as easily as any other ddocuments!

In summary, I got knee-deep in this, and in all honesty, I'm a huge fan of this scanner. It seems to be an extremely reliable device and one that would withstand the forces of a busy office, and will get the job done in a relatively quick time! If you choose this scanner, I'd say you'd be making a sound investment in the current and future productivity of your office.

Hi Folks,
I am the bringer of some more great technical news, since the good people over at Epson have asked me to review their Document Scanners, the DS-560 and the DS-520. Today, we will be discussing the powerhouse DS-560, and I hope this will assist you in your decision-making process.

Let me start out here by being totally honest: I've set up document scanners before, but I've never used a document scanner before, specifically, however I've used the scan functionality on different printers and all-in-one-units. I am a tech at heart, so this was destined to be a fun review!

OK, so, in setting up the new Epson DS-560, for starters and for tech geeks like me, we like to see the tech specs, or technical specifications. For the sake of flowing forward, however, I will save the details section for the very end.

Right out of the box, this machine is ready for action, with a 50-page automatic document feeder that is built with strength and flexibility. In the past, with other manufacturers, I've had issues connecting the document feeder and getting that set up from the start, but Epson makes it pretty simple and everything connects perfectly well with no margin of error nor second-guessing the steps.

Now, one of the coolest features for me, personally, because I'm always on the road is that you can remotely scan by attaching to the printers address, and you need to download a simple Epson App. I did a little research in advance just to see what I was going to be facing, and I heard a few people saying they had some small difficulties in attaching the scanner to the network. However, in terms of my experience with the DS-560, it was seamless and I had no issues whatsoever I had everything up and running within a few moments.

I mean it's really quite simple, the whole concept of what this machine does and the fact that Epson has it down to a science now. You literally press a button on your device, whether it's an Apple iPad or your Android, whatever it may be, they broke it down so it is so simple.

Simply testing the device, you can see how powerful it is, and you can do the math and realize that it will satisfy an office of multiple people working within that office and will certainly meet their document scanning needs.

I think the most important concept here is that they isolated the scan functionality into one device vs. having it included in an all-in-one device, when some offices may only require having a high speed scanner, such as the DS-560. This scanner should help you to solidify their decision of which device to buy, as it will easily help you meet your productivity requirements.

In the coming days, I will also be reviewing the Epson DS-520, and I look forward to just as seamless and just as an amazing experience testing and reviewing that model as I did with the DS-560.

Hi Folks,
It was great seeing many of you this past week at the Expo in Cleveland. I've heard many kind words about my speech, and I thank you for listening to my take on where we are headed in and beyond 2015. We should be breaking records established back in our "Hey-Day" of 2006/2007. Coming along for the ride?

On to our topic today, which is an unofficial part 2 from our previous Blog Post. Recently, I had the pleasure of testing out the newest Epson WorkForce Printer (the WF-4630), and the results from that were super-impressive. As a follow up, we also had the opportunity to test another of Epson's high-powered printers, the Epson WorkForce WF-7610. I'm excited to report back on this printer after stress-testing it the past few days, and I have a few offices in mind who, by having this printer, they would be blessed with abundant free time to review their newest accolades! I will explain, but first....

Tech-Time Stats

Folks, this printer is blazing fast! It prints at a speed of 18 ISO ppm for black, and 10 ISO ppm for color. It just shoots the pages right out. The new PrecisionCore Technology blasts out colors at about 50,000 droplets per second. Such a highly-caffeinated printer for such a reasonable price!

Speaking of money, when taking into account factors such as ink replacement and capacities of the printer and the cartridges, printing with the Epson Workforce WF-7610 results in a lower cost than printing with a laser printer. How much lower? I did some digging online and found the estimates are close to 40%. That's a golden goose right there!

As you go about using the functions of this multi-function printer, the screen on the printer is full-color, and has appealing tones that are soft on the eyes. The menus are easy to navigate, and the screen keeps you engaged as you are intuitively making your way towards your end goal.

Based on the requirements of many of you and the types of contracts you print out, I know that quite often you need to print duplex. It sounds easy, but most printers make it so complicated and so difficult to print on both sides of the same paper. Not this time: I tested the duplex printing with this machine and it was an absolute snap and it will be a huge time saver for those of you who utilize this feature.

Now, to my many business associates working as Engineers and Architects (Lord knows the Real Estate Industry is full of you guys!), this printer will serve you best as it can provide you with wide format borderless pictures of up to 13" by 19" inches and it has a large scan bed of 11" x 17". This paper size is particular to your group, so take heed of this feature. For everyone else, the printer is at the top of it's game for printing deep and rich tones on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, so you most certainly be able to enjoy the benefits of the machine, as well.
