Welcome again to Growing in the Word. Pastor Jim Jarrett is continuing his verse by verse study of Colossians today, and he takes us now to chapter three, beginning at verse five, where we see some further warnings about the consequences of an ungodly life.
Sometimes we get impatient, discouraged, and become weary in this life. It's then that we need to be reminded that good and wonderful things are around the corner, and this is not all there is. It's important at times like these, to set our hearts and minds on things above. The hereafter is what we are to be here after, as someone has wisely noted. We join pastor Jim Jarrett in Colossians three today, as he highlights the things that matter most.
Pastor Jim Jarrett is continuing his verse by verse study of Colossians, and today we enter chapter three. Most, if not all of us want to make a difference and a lasting impact. And if you're a Christian you want to live for the Lord. However, in this life it is so easy to get off track, and start to focus on things that really don't matter in the light of eternity.
As we complete our look at Colossians two today, I'll remind you that in this section of God's word, we've been studying some things that can easily distract and rip us off from what God has for us. Legalism is a common term for this problem, and it all boils down to where you place your trust - the words of men or the words of God. Too many people today are hung up on following rules and denying themselves the good things of life in order to show God how Godly they are.
Today Jim will bring us another study in the book of Colossians, as we continue a look at a very real threat to our relationship with God - legalism. These verses are well known, but often misunderstood, and that has led to a lot of misunderstanding. It doesn't have to be that way, of course.
There are certainly things in this life that we can't be too confident about. The stock market is a good example, as it has ups and downs that often times resembles a roller coaster ride. In the midst of this uncertainty, It's nice to know, that we can be confident in the really important things...namely our salvation in Christ.
Today we'll move on in our verse by verse study through Colossians as we begin a look at chapter two, verses eleven through fifteen. Here we see some very important admonitions from Paul about the difference between law and grace, and becoming a new creation in Christ, and thus showing the world the difference the Lord makes in our lives.
As we continue in Colossians two, pastor Jim will speak extensively about false teachers, and he will encourage us to pursue a life of obedience to Christ rather than chasing spiritual goose bumps. Our scripture reference today is Colossians chapter two, verses eight through ten.

We're currently enjoying a journey through the book of Colossians. This powerful letter is all about one wonderful fact - Jesus is Lord! Do you think God knew two thousand years ago how relevant these words would be for us today? Of course He did!

To know Jesus and His attributes is to realize that there no reason to follow any other path but the path that takes you to Him. Today Jim returns to his series in Colossians. For quite some time now, we've been studying the first chapter of this great book, and gaining marvelous insights for our lives. This powerful letter has a central theme - the majesty and power of Jesus Christ, and the great sacrifice He made on the cross.
Hopelessness is a problem that plagues many people today. Can you imagine facing the hardships of this world without God? That's the problem for people without hope - they need the hope we find in a relationship with Jesus Christ, Paul addresses our hope of glory in Colossians chapter one.
Today we'll resume our verse by verse study through Colossians, as we consider obedience. This life produces a certain amount of suffering for the Christian, but if we remain faithful to God's word, we'll make it through! If you're a parent, you know how happy it makes you when your kids obey and respect your wishes. The same is true with our Heavenly Father.
We'll be continuing our series through Colossians here today on the broadcast, as we begin a four day look at the final six verses in chapter one. You've no doubt been asked to do something that was a stretching experience for you, that called you to go out of you comfort zone. Well, sometimes our call to ministry will lead us beyond our comfort zone too, and that's a good thing as we'll soon see.
Today we continue our series through the book of Colossians. We will be looking today at chapter one, verses nineteen through twenty. These verses have to do with Jesus Christ and His role as reconciler. Who did He reconcile? Jesus came to earth and died on a cross to reconcile us with God.
In times of trial it's comforting to realize that our Lord Jesus Christ is in charge of everything. We are in Colossians chapter one today, and pastor Jim will share some truths about our savior as we study this essential scripture.
We're told in scripture that Jesus is the creator of heaven and earth. So, then what should we do if He really is the God of creation? Pastor Jim Jarrett will pursue that question here today on Growing in the Word.
Today we'll focus once again on the first chapter of Colossians, this time in verses fifteen through twenty. Remember that this letter from Paul was written to a group of believers, the Colossians, who had been deceived by false teachers. In the verses we'll study today, Paul goes about setting the record straight on exactly who Jesus Christ is.
We're currently studying the book of Colossians, and today we'll bring you the second half of a study Jim began last time, dealing with chapter one, verses nine through fourteen. One mistake many people make is believing that you can have a halfway relationship with God. Can you believe in Him, and serve Him, and still walk in the darkness of the world?
Today on Growing in the Word, we're going to once again see the folly of such an attitude. Colossians chapter one points us toward our inheritance in heaven...an inheritance that no amount of money can buy! If you had to choose between riches on earth and riches in heaven, what would be your "final answer"?
When you think about the great men of the Bible, one name that is near the top of everyone's list is the Apostle Paul. One of his greatest qualities was his selflessness. Today as we continue studying Colossians chapter one, we see this trait quite clearly. Paul is in jail in Rome, and yet his concern is for his brothers in the Colossian church. They've been deceived and taken in by some false doctrine, and Paul writes this little letter to help get them back on course.
Today on Growing in the Word as we continue our new series in Colossians, we'll see that this is the very situation Paul finds himself in. His brothers in the Colossians church had allowed some false teaching to creep into their doctrine. As he always does, Paul comes up with some wonderful advice for the Colossians, and our teacher, Jim Jarrett, will take us through them today.
As Jim has mentioned, this letter to the little church in Colossi was written by Paul, while he was imprisoned. Was he angry at being in jail? No. Was he throwing a pity party? No. He was concerned enough for the Colossians that he sent this powerful letter to them to remind them of the supremacy of Jesus and the need to discern false doctrine from true.
Pastor Jim has just begin a new series going through Colossians, one of the letters the Apostle Paul wrote from a jail cell. He didn't spend any time feeling sorry for himself in this four chapter letter. As a matter of fact if you didn't know he was in prison, you would never guess that is where he wrote Colossians. Paul's message here is simple - Christ is supreme over everything in the universe, and so He should be worshipped and followed.
If you're looking for practical ways to live the Christian life, then Paul's epistle to the Colossians is a good place to go. We'll start with the first three verses of chapter one. As we all know, a relationship with Jesus begins with a changed heart and a reborn life. There is no better example of what the Holy Spirit can do in a life than the Apostle Paul.
Today on Growing in the Word, pastor Jim Jarrett brings to a close his series in Genesis. We look back all those thousands of years to the time right after the flood, and we see that not much has changed. Technologically we're very advanced, but sin-wise, we're still stuck in the mud from the flood!
Pastor Jim begins our final look at the first part of the book of Genesis today, in chapter eleven. It's here we see a familiar scene – the building of the tower of Babel. The world was a very different place back then, of course, but in some ways, things haven't changed much. You'll see what I mean as pastor Jim takes us through today's study.

It wasn't too long ago that we received a stellar report about the lifestyle of Noah. He was described as a righteous man who walked with God, but even Noah made his fair share of mistakes. Noah is about to stumble into sin, and to make matters worse- his son repeats the matter in an ungodly fashion. Here's Jim to remind us that we should never expect to be sinless – but we should always strive to sin less.
The Bible gives us plenty of examples of good and godly men and women who stumbled into sin. Whether it was King David, the apostle Peter, or as we'll see today, Noah. If we're wise, we'll learn from their mistakes and not repeat them. Right after a great victory, and spiritual blessing, Noah fell into sin. And that can so easily happen to us!
God has just judged the world through a flood, and after a little over a year in the Ark, it's time for Noah and his family to step onto dry land. And on the heels of judgment comes good news - that God is going to bless Noah and his family. We'll hear what He has to say momentarily.
For quite a few weeks now we've been studying the early chapters of Genesis. In chapter eight, we get a glimpse at life after the flood. Noah, his family and the animals are about to step onto dry land after being in the Ark for just about a year. Pastor Jim Jarrett says it was a totally different world and environment they stepped into.

The rain has stopped, the waters are receding, and it's time to step out on dry land. That's where we'll pick the story up today.

The water came forth from below as well as from above and everything was destroyed. It's important to note that rain was a new phenomenon - it had never happened before!

Maybe you've noticed the Bible contains quite a number of genealogies. And so many of us read them without much attention! But there are all kinds of hidden treasures to be found in them, as we'll see today on Growing in the Word. Pastor Jim Jarrett draws our attention to Genesis five and the generations of Adam. First, we take notice of a man named Enoch, who walked faithfully with God before the Lord took him away.

As we look at this biblical family tree, we are reminded that God was in control of humanity from the very beginning! You'll find today's scripture in Genesis five.
We've come to Genesis chapter four and the descendants of Cain. There are remarkable similarities to our day today providing great insight to our dilemma. We'll start with Genesis four, verse twenty-one.

Cain had several "firsts" in his life. He was the first baby, and yet became the first murderer. It's shocking to think that a baby could one day become a murderer. But tragically, it's a terrible reality that repeated for far too many families. You might be wondering how this happens. Is there anything that can be done about it?
One of the consequences of sin is the curse. And you may recall one area that was cursed is the ground. So man's work will now be by the sweat of his brow. Let's talk about that for a bit. From Genesis chapter three, picking up in verse eighteen.
When God tells us to do something, or to avoid a certain behavior, we should listen and obey, wouldn't you agree? When we fail to do that, there are severe consequences, and the story of Adam and Eve reminds us of that. We're about to see the reason for the curse, as we look at Genesis chapter three.
We tell our kids from an early age that bad decisions in life have consequences. Some of us have learned that lesson the hard way. And of course we want them to avoid the mistakes that we've made. Adam and Even certainly made their fair share of poor choices, and the result was judgment and The Curse. But they weren't left without hope, because the Messiah would come to forgive them and us of sin!
For the last few weeks we've been in Genesis, and we're spending a considerable amount of time in chapter three, which of course is where the fall of man and the curse are described for us. We don't want you to miss God's message of grace, even in the midst of the Curse. Though there would be judgment for Adam and Eve, there's also the hope of salvation and forgiveness to cling to.
We take you back to the Garden today, as a part of our new study in Genesis. And we're about to notice the curse and judgment that sin brought. After confronting Adam and Eve in the Garden, God passed judgment first on the Serpent. And as far as He's concerned there's no hope of redemption…. Just a curse.
Right now pastor Jim Jarrett is in a detailed study of the early portion of Genesis. And as we head back to chapter three Jim is going to point out the curse and judgment that came as a result of Adam and Eve's sin. It's amazing to consider how this act of disobedience has had such a profound impact on human history. The good news is, though paradise was lost, it can be regained by God's grace.
Today on Growing in the Word, pastor Jim Jarrett is going to look at what Adam and Eve told God when they were caught with their hands in the cookie jar so to speak. We're in Genesis three.
We're back in Genesis three today, where we've been for quite some time. It's rich with helpful insights regarding sin, temptation, and as we'll see today Grace! If you have small children, you can often times tell they've done something naughty by the look an their face. It's a look of total shame. It's reminiscent of how we often feel after we sin. But as we'll see today, our Heavenly Father comes to the sinner in a very gracious way!
Today on Growing in the Word we go all the way back to the Garden, and notice how satan works. How he dealt with Adam and Eve, is how he deals with us. It'll serve to help us overcome temptation, and live to honor God.

The devil, with his cunning and craftiness uses subtlety to tempt us. So we must be on our guard. God knows what we need and in His great care for us – He provides it. Though life isn't like the Garden of Eden, one day it will be, because of what Jesus did on the cross. And as we look forward to the New Creation we can glean insight on the greatness and glory of our God - from the first creation. Does it makes sense that God is creator? Are we following blindly, or is there evidence to support Genesis one and two? We'll look at both sides logically and scientifically and see which one comes out on top. If you've ever taken human anatomy in school, you have a pretty good idea of how complex our bodies are. Pastor Jim says that's compelling proof that God did it!
How did we get here, and what's the real history of mankind? God has given us His answer to that question in Genesis chapters one and two, and our present series is emphasizing God's creative work. If you'll recall in chapter one we learned that the Lord created man on the sixth day. Well here in chapter two He's going to give us some additional details and elaborate. Let's look together at the real history of man as we return to pastor Jim Jarrett.
God created the Universe and life. After He was finished He put His stamp of approval on it, saying that it was good. And then He rested. As we learned last time on Growing in the Word, that simply means He ceased from His work. But the question before us today is should we cease from our work and rest? Genesis has been rightly called the book of beginnings as it reveals the beginning of everything - except for God of course. The bible makes no attempt to prove His existence for that truth is self evident. As the Psalmist said, the heavens declare the glory of God and the skies show His handy work. What a glorious work God has done - how great is our God! And for you - He made the sky, the oceans, the trees, the animals and in such abundance and variety.
Today on Growing in the Word we resume our study of the Beginning. It's based on the early part of Genesis, and we've reached the point of creation where God created mankind. And the first thing He did after that, is He blessed us. Our God is a blessing God, and that's seen from the beginning of time.

Our teacher is pastor Jim Jarrett and he's been leading us on a verse by verse study of the Book of Revelation. Today we will once again spend some quality time in chapter twenty-two, the very last chapter of the entire Bible! What are the last written words of God?
The key question we'll examine once again today is, now that we know what's in store for this world, what are we going to do about it? We go to school for twelve or so years and are expected to use what we've learned to make our way in society. In much the same way, God has given us the information here in Revelation and expects us to use it. Exactly how?
We are near the end of a long and inspiring journey through the last book in the Bible, Revelation. And today, Jim will continue our study with a message from Revelation twenty two. We've seen and studied the sequence of events that will signal the return of the Lord. The question you and I must answer is this: What should we be doing with the time remaining?
Today we'll be talking about the soon return of Christ. A Gallup Poll concluded that sixty-two percent of Americans believe that Jesus Christ will return to earth someday. If this is true, why aren't more Americans living with a sense of expectancy that Christ could return at any moment? As followers of Christ, our actions need to match our beliefs.
The future is unknown, and human beings always fear the unknown, right? Rather than fearing what is to come, we are to be faithful till Christ returns. Instead of fearing the dark, we're to be lights as we watch and wait.
Today we remember the great sacrifice Jesus made on the cross of Calvary. He died a painful and unjust death for a wonderful reason - to save us from the penalty of our sins. But if Jesus had died on the cross, and the story ended there, we would be in big trouble. But Jesus rose from the grave and walked out of the tomb, and bridged the gap between us and a perfect and Holy God.
With all of the turmoil going on in the world right now, isn't it a comfort to know that God is in control? This coming Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's the most significant event in human history. Can you imagine going through life in this mixed-up and violent world without the promise of eternal life in heaven? That promise was cemented in stone when the Lord rose from the grave and walked out of that tomb.
As we continue our study of Revelation, pastor Jim will bring us more details about a most amazing place, The New Jerusalem.

But the Lord has something greater in view, than our comfort. He wants to conform us into the image of Christ!
Jim Jarrett is our Bible teacher, and if you were with us last time, you’ll recall Jim mentioning that this section of scripture is controversial and often-times misinterpreted. Is James saying God will heal every affliction, as long as we pray for that healing? We join pastor Jim now in chapter five of James, where we’ll pay close attention to verses thirteen through eighteen.
Many who look at James chapter five, misinterpret what the author is truly saying. James tells the sick person to call for the elders, and let them pray over him or her and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. Then he goes on to say that the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. Does this mean that God will heal everyone who prays with faith? No one enjoys struggling in life, but the plain fact is, it is going to happen to all of at one time or another. The key word in dealing with suffering is - PATIENCE!
James is certainly a no-nonsense guy, wouldn’t you agree? He doesn’t equivocate when it comes to what is required to lead a Holy life. In the area of finances, he has some very strong things to share in the beginning verses of chapter five. It’s been said often that you can tell a lot about a person’s relationship with God by looking at their finances.
There was a group of people who apparently weren’t living as they should back when these words in James were written, and this prompted a sharp rebuke from James. Not unlike many Americans, these people misused their riches and we’ll see what James has to say about them and it speaks volumes to us here now.
Money is a hot topic in our nation right now. Gas prices at an all-time high, inflation, food prices rising. But what pastor Jim will focus on today is our attitude toward financial matters. We are studying James right now, and in the first several verses of chapter five, James lays it on the line - the way we view our finances says a great deal about our relationship with God.

If you’re familiar with the Epistle of James, you know that James didn’t pull any punches in his exhortations about serving God and living a life that glorified Jesus Christ.
Right now the book under the microscope is James. And we’re in chapter three. This section of James is dealing with wisdom - and controlling the tongue - one of the most powerful parts of the human body.

There’s probably no muscle that is harder to control than the tongue. We’ve all experienced saying something that later we wished we hadn’t... whether it be a curse word, or something that hurt another a great deal. It’s amazing how such a small part of the body can have such a large impact. No wonder James likens it to a fire!

James was uncompromising in his exhortations to his readers about what their faith should look like. Now, that might seem like a strange thing to ask. How can we describe what faith looks like? Well our faith is very visible to those around us by the way we live our lives. If we truly live a life that glorifies the Lord, that’s a living faith!
We are currently enjoying a verse by verse study through the epistle of James, and what a challenging book this is. James wasn’t even a believer when his half-brother Jesus was walking the earth, but when he did become a born-again follower of Christ, he became an uncompromising advocate of the Lord. In chapter two of his epistle, James challenges his readers to have a faith that can be seen by everyone.
As we study James chapter two again today, the subject will be an important one - faith. We know that faith alone saves us from hell. But faith is not just something we hide in our hearts, it’s something that should be displayed for the whole world to see. Does that describe your faith? James urges us to have a living, working faith, and that’s the title pastor Jim has given to today’s study in James two, verses twenty through twenty-six.
In chapter two of his epostle, James says “Faith without works is dead”. Many a Christian has come to the conclusion that James is saying we are saved by what we do. That obviously contradicts the fact that we are saved through faith and faith alone. But that is not that James means. It is vitally important that we get this right. It goes to the very core of our Christianity.
Since our early days in Sunday School we’ve heard over and over again that we are saved by grace and not by works. We’ve committed verses like Ephesians 2:8-9 to our memory to reinforce that belief. Then we run across James chapter two, and we see that at first glance, James seems to contradict the doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith alone: “Faith without works is dead.” But today on Growing in the Word we’ll see that these passages are actually complimentary.
As we study James chapter two today we’re going to discuss a subject of great importance. We place the spotlight on the relationship between faith and works. James says faith without works is dead, while Paul said we are saved by faith, apart from any works! Is there a way for these two statements to coexist? We’ll find out today on our broadcast.
Today, pastor Jim is going to finish up a message based in James chapter two, titled “Fulfilling The Royal Law”. What is the “royal law”? Well, it goes by another name you might be familiar with, “the golden rule”. Whatever name you give it, loving the Lord with all of our hearts, and loving our neighbor as ourselves is the key to a happy and fulfilling life - and a life pleasing to God.
As we begin today, let me ask you a question - are you a law-abiding citizen? I think most of us would say yes to that question. We generally try to obey the rules. Oh, we might drive too fast once in a while and forget to signal when making a turn, but for the most part, we try to do the right thing. The law we’re going to consider today is much more important than any law on the books - It’s the law in the book - the bible. In James chapter two, James writes about “The Royal Law” and how we can fulfill it.
We have thousands of laws on the books in all fifty states, and every time the Congress considers a new law, you need a wheelbarrow to cart the thousands of pages around. Today we are going to talk about a different law - a law described by James as “The Royal Law”. You’ll recognize it as pastor Jim goes along today. It’s the rule for living that Jesus Christ shared during the sermon on the mount.
As we are finding out as we go through the five chapters in James’ epistle, James didn’t equivocate when it came to proclaiming the truth of the gospel, and the consequences of breaking the rules! One thing that James stressed in chapter two is the sin of partiality. It comes in a lot of forms, and some of them are really destructive. Racism and bigotry have no place in the life of a Christian.
Are you ever guilty of partiality? Now, in a lot of cases, it’s harmless. For instance, if you’re partial to Pistachio Ice Cream, that’s fine. But what about being partial based on prejudices? That’s a major problem in our society right now. People are being judged because of their skin color, their political affiliation, and even their nationality. That’s wrong, and that’s a sin!
As hard as we may try to minimize it, racism and bigotry are all around us. I think you’ll agree that our society has taken a step backwards in the area of race relations in the last decade or so. What is the solution to this enormous problem? The media and our political leaders talk a lot about it, but not much changes. Our relationship with one another should be much more than the two hours we spend at church on Sunday. We are challenged repeatedly in God’s word to be much more than just a casual acquaintance. Today, we will be challenged to submit to one another, and to bear one another’s burdens. We’ll begin today in Ephesians chapter five.
Today we bring you a special message for this special day, as we remember the great sacrifice Jesus made on the cross of Calvary. He died a painful and unjust death for a wonderful reason - to save us from the penalty of our sins. But if Jesus had died on the cross, and the story ended there, we would be in big trouble. But Jesus rose from the grave and walked out of the tomb, and bridged the gap between us and a perfect and Holy God.
With all of the turmoil going on in the world right now, isn’t it a comfort to know that God is in control? This coming Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s the most significant event in human history. Can you imagine going through life in this mixed-up and violent world without the promise of eternal life in heaven? That promise was cemented in stone when the Lord rose from the grave and walked out of that tomb.

These two precepts go hand in hand, because if we are instructing one another, than certainly that is going to cause us to be stirred up for the cause of Christ. This story of great triumph doesn’t end with Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai’s victory over the evil Haman. They may have won the battle, but there is still a war against their people, the Jews. Esther must stop a decree that has gone out to the nation that calls for the destruction of the Jewish people. Would you have the courage to do something extraordinary when called upon by God?
We’ve been making our way the book of Esther with pastor Jim Jarrett! God’s remarkable sovereign care of His people comes shining through today as we notice the very special love He has for them. We pick up in our story with the decision to not plunder the people. It’s a noble example for us to follow. Again we’re in the book of Esther, picking up in chapter eight.
In Esther chapter eight we’ll learn that God’s sovereign control is not an excuse for believers to be indifferent toward the world’s evils. It’s a real cop-out for believers to turn their back on the world’s problems by saying “God is in control”.

Haman is the poster boy for the misuse of authority, and today, he gets his just desserts.

The sovereignty of God is not to be an excuse for indifference or carelessness - but to comfort us and strengthen our resolve. Pastor Jim is sharing a fascinating series based in the book of Esther, and today we will finish chapter four, with a look at the very famous verse “For such as time as this.” It’s a call to stand for the Lord - and to prepare our children for the challenges they’ll face in life. And it will be a battle!
Pastor Jim Jarrett is taking us through the book of Esther, and we’ve arrived in chapter four. It’s here that Mordecai hears of the decree that the Jews are to be destroyed. How does he react? He prays and fasts, and calls for Esther to act.
In the book of Esther, we have the historical account of a high official in the ancient Persian Empire named Haman, who is unable to control a Jew named Mordecai. It makes him furious, to the point where Haman, in his anger, not only seeks to murder Mordecai, but all Jews. But why he does so is very instructive.
Esther is more than a story of a beautiful and Godly woman, it’s also a story of deceit, jealousy, and ultimately, God’s provision for his people. Esther reminds us also that despite these events took place twenty-five hundred years ago, human behavior hasn’t changed much, and God’s omnipotence hasn’t changed at all!
We’re studying the book of Esther, and today as we finish chapter two, we actually see the circumstances in which Esther came to the Persian Monarch to be his wife. First she had to endure a beauty contest that lasted four years! Esther is a wonderful book to study because, despite the fact that God is not mentioned in the text of the book, we can see His hands all over this story.
It may be a bit of a stretch, but today on the program, we’ll ask you to imagine back to the time about five hundred years before Christ, and picture what the Miss America Pageant would have looked like back then. I’d bet there wouldn’t have been a swimsuit competition, but the talent segments would have been interesting! That’s petty much what we see as we study Esther chapter two - An ancient beauty contest.
Today we continue our study in the book of Esther. The name “Esther” means “star”, and the woman we meet in this book definitely deserves some pretty high billing, but as we’ll see through this book, the real start here is God. The way He works behind the scenes is truly magnificent. We’ll concentrate today and tomorrow on another character we meet in Esther - King Ahasuerus, and his problems with pride.
There are a great many differences between life in the Old Testament days and life in the year 2025. Today’s study in Esther is a good example. A Persian Monarch gave a great feast...he wanted his wife to show off her femininity to his pals, and she refused, so he kicked her out of the palace. You’d have a hard time getting away with that today, wouldn’t you? Through all of this, of course, God was at work. That’s one thing that hasn’t changed.
On today’s broadcast we begin a new book of the Bible, the book of Esther. Esther paints a graphic picture of the world at that time. There’s an old proverb that says, “First a man takes a drink - then the drink takes the man.” The book of Esther has a lot to say about the dangers of drunkenness. We’ll meet a King who has the ability to do whatever he wants and it leads to disaster.
There came a time in Nehemiah thirteen when the people’s devotion needed to be rekindled. We’ll see how the Lord brings this about in their lives, as well as in our own. Today Pastor Jim Jarrett will put the finishing touches on our study of Nehemiah.
The wall in Jerusalem had been rebuilt, it was a great time of rejoicing and celebration over all that God had done. But very sadly, things take a turn for the worse as we open Nehemiah thirteen today on Growing in the Word. And how often have we seen it, after a great victory, comes a terrible defeat. It’s not only common in athletics, but in our spiritual lives too.

That was a huge accomplishment, and the people were truly excited about it. So it was time to have a dedication service, and give all the glory to God.

A Great building project in Jerusalem is complete, and it’s time to celebrate and give thanks to God for what He’s done. So a worship team is assembled and ready to go. At various times in our lives the Lord will ask us to sacrifice something for Him. And you can be sure He’ll ask us to offer our lives as a living sacrifice. As we follow through and obey, He in turn blesses us greatly. Not that we deserve it, but He is so very gracious. The people of Israel are about to make a transition into Jerusalem, and this required a great sacrifice for them to do so. Let’s see how the Lord blesses them. We’re in chapter eleven of Nehemiah.
The Bible has a great deal to say about money and stewardship. In fact, as we’ll learn today on Growing in the Word, how we handle our money says a lot about us. When the people of God have the right focus and priorities, everything changes, including how we spend and give. Turn if you would to Nehemiah ten and let’s see how to be revived and committed, as God would have us.

But would it stick? Well as we open this section of Scripture, Pastor Jim notices several evidences that prove it was true repentance and a real revival.

You’ll remember the Lord was doing a great work in His people at this point in time. They were humble, separated from the things of the world, they publicly confessed their sin, and opened the Word of God. That’s a recipe for revival in our lives too.
An oath, when it gets right down to it, is a solemn promise to do something. Some of us have done so in a courtroom. And of course, if you’re married, you remember the oath you took before God. We’ve been going through the book of Nehemiah and the people have been convicted of their sin. They are now at the point of wanting to obey God’s law.
What are the steps we need to take to revive the soul of this world? I know you agree with me when I say that this world is in desperate need of revival. But that revival must start with the Christian church. Join us today in Nehemiah chapter nine.

Today we take another look at Nehemiah’s leadership style. And throughout this series in Nehemiah we’ve posed the question, “What made this man the leader that he was?” We need Godly leaders today in the church, the family, in our government, schools and at work. In Nehemiah, Pastor Jim has noticed attributes of a Godly leader that we should emulate.
It’s pretty easy to spot a leader who is more interested in their own gain than the people they’re supposed to be serving. This sort of selfish behavior is commonplace in our government, in the corporate world, and sadly even in the church. But today on Growing In the Word, that stands in stark contrast to a leader that God can use. Again Pastor Jim Jarrett is looking at the leadership style of Nehemiah
Nehemiah was a good and Godly man, but that doesn’t mean he was immune to temptation. In fact, satan will always go after the Godly person harder than anyone else. Seeing how Nehemiah handled temptation is a great lesson for our own lives. If you’ve been troubled by an inability to handle the temptations in your life, stay tuned for some practical encouragement!
Just as satan tried to prevent God's work through Nehemiah, he's still up to the same thing today. And using the same techniques and tactics I might add. Pastor Jim will point to an attack on Nehemiah, with the hope and prayer that it will help you when you're attacked. Again we're in Nehemiah six.
Pastor Jim has been going verse-by-verse through tNehemiah. In chapter five we are going to see what sin can do to the church. Sin in the church? Yes, despite some people’s opinion, sin is a problem in the church just as it is in every other place in the world. In fact, as has been mentioned before, satan will attack the church before he attacks anywhere else!
The Lord compelled Nehemiah to return to his homeland for a rebuilding effort. Now, in any work of God like this, you can be sure satan will do his best to keep it from happening. As we’ll soon see the obstacles Nehemiah faced along the way aren’t unlike those that many of us face today.

Maybe you begin an exciting new ministry at church, and before you know it you’re hit with problems from every side. Today on our broadcast we’ll learn a valuable lesson, when we’re serving the Lord the enemy takes notice and attacks! Nehemiah certainly faced his fair share of opposition.
Here lately we’ve been studying Nehemiah. And in chapter three we have several examples of those who responded to the call to build; and an example of those who didn’t respond. They seemed to be OK with the status quo, and that’s where we begin.
This is Growing In The Word with Pastor Jim Jarrett. Nehemiah was called by God to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the city. What has God called you to do in your church and your city and world? Well today’s teaching will help you evaluate that. We’re in chapter three.
Full time employment is a reality for most of us. We spend forty hours or so at work, and a good amount of time preparing for work and getting there and back. So it only makes sense that we try to make that time a glorifying one for God. How can we do that? We’ll find out today as we return to Jim’s verse by verse study through Ephesians. Today we will finish pastor Jim’s look at Ephesians six, verse four. It’s here that the Apostle Paul shares insights on the relationship between parents and their kids. Every parent would tell you that they have made mistakes in the course of raising their children, but if we concentrate on what God’s words says, we can minimize those mistakes.
Today we’ll again find our place in the sixth chapter of Ephesians., as we continue to talk about the challenging and rewarding task of parenting. If you are a parent, I don’t need to tell you just what a challenge it is to raise Godly kids, but I also don’t have to tell you how wonderfully rewarding the experience is.
Today on Growing in the Word, we’ll be talking about improving as parents. We can improve as parents by looking at the ultimate example of parenthood - God, our Heavenly Father. That’s what we’ll do as pastor Jim Jarrett continues our study in Ephesians six, verse four.
In just a moment, pastor Jim Jarrett will offer some helpful tips, all scripturally based of course, on how we are to go about raising our kids. It’s becoming increasingly difficult - as if I had to tell you. Our children are faced with all sorts of pressures steering them in the wrong direction. But how can we as parents train them in the way they should go?
We are moving right along in our verse by verse study through Ephesians, and we are at the beginning stages of our look at chapter six, so we still have some great studies to bring you. Today we’ll concentrate on chapter six, verses one through four. It’s a section of scripture in which we can glean so much when it comes to raising Godly kids,, and keeping our sanity in the process!
With the enemy working overtime on our children, and an increasing measure of evil in their midst, we need desperately to turn to the solid ground of scripture for guidance. As you know if you join us regularly, we’ve spent considerable time in the New Testament book of Ephesians, and today we’ll wrap up our look at chapter five. The subject is marriage, and specifically the way a husband ought to treat his wife. I know there’s plenty of marriage advice to be had in the world, through books, television, the internet, and the like, but God’s word has all the answers we need to make our marriages the very best they can be.
We’re currently in the midst of pastor Jim Jarrett’s verse by verse series through Ephesians. We’ve examined the wife’s role in marriage already, and now we’re considering what God calls the husband to do and to be. With all the problems people are having in their marriages today, we can’t help but think how many of those problems would evaporate if we would simply do what God calls us to do.
Is it possible to have a great marriage, and one that lasts? It sure is, and the Bible tells us how. Today on Growing in the Word we turn our attention to the Spirit Filled Husband, and highlight what real love looks like. This is just part of pastor Jim Jarrett’ study in Ephesians. On this edition of Growing in the Word, we aim to find out what God says about marriage. God invented marriage for a very specific purpose, and that purpose means there very specific and wonderful roles to be played by both partners. Today we’ll again look at the role of the Christian wife.
Last time on Growing in the Word - we learned that as God is the Designer and the Architect of marriage - He also designed the roles of the husband and wife. We’re looking at the role of the submissive wife who is to respect and support her husband. This doesn’t mean that she is inferior - but rather in a place of safety and submission even as we are submissive to Christ.
Today on Growing in the Word, we begin an exciting mini-series on Marriage and the Family, as part of our study in Ephesians. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, we’ll see what it means to be Spirit filled parents, children, husbands, wives as well as employees and employers. We’ll begin today by looking at the Spirit Filled Wife as described in Ephesians five, verses twenty-two through twenty-four.
As you may know, in our day, much is attributed to the Spirit of God that is not from Him. And so how then do we know which of our actions and words are as a result of being filled with the Spirit, and which aren’t? All of us have felt grief at one time or another. It can be as insignificant as your favorite sports team losing a big game, or as highly significant as losing a loved one. But what about man’s ability to grieve the Holy Spirit of God? We’ve been making our way through Ephesians. And in chapter four we’re warned about grieving the Holy Spirit. Hello and glad to have you with us as we continue in In Ephesians chapter four. It’s here, in verse thirty, that we’re given a clear issue that we must put behind us to achieve what God has for us, and really every Christian. Grieving the Holy Spirit. Sounds like a big deal, doesn’t it? And it is!
We pick up today in our study of the book of Ephesians in chapter four verses eleven through sixteen, where we’re given insight, on apostles, prophets and evangelists. Any team relies on proper equipment to be effective. A baseball team with a bag full of hockey pucks wouldn’t be much good, would they? The same is true for God’s team! That’s you and me and the rest of Christianity.
Today we’ll discover, the connection between the gifted men and women God gives to the Church, along with the Spirit’s work in reaching the heart, through the proclamation of the word. Jim’s focus today is the final segment of Ephesians chapter three - where Paul prays once again for the Ephesians - that they would understand the great depth of God’s Love. As is the case with so much of the bible, this is a lesson we need to learn as well.

Would it be possible for you and me to be saved if the Lord’s didn’t die on the cross? The answer is no. And why did He die such a violent and painful death? Have you ever thought that the answer might be the extreme nature of man’s sin? We sent Him there! But He allowed it to happen because He loves us so much.
One of the greatest verses in the Bible is Ephesians chapter one, verse seven. It really cuts right to the point of our existence. We’ve been redeemed through the blood Christ shed on the cross. Why did God allow His wonderful and perfect son to be tortured and killed in such a brutal manner? The answer is: LOVE!
If you pay much attention to current events today, you may have noticed a trend among many people - a trend toward resignation. I don't mean quitting jobs, I mean being resigned to living an incomplete life. People walking around without purpose - just running out the string. It doesn’t have to be that way! Encouragement is what they need, and God’s word provides it!
When the apostle Paul was in prison, he wrote four very significant letters, known as the prison epistles. Colossians, Philippians, Philemon, and the letter we’re currently studying, Ephesians. These four letters describe the relationship between the head of the church, Jesus Christ, the body of the church, Christians, and the Christian life. Today we’ll be looking at Ephesians one, verses four through six, as we explore predestination and adoption.
In Ephesians one, verse four, Paul speaks of the fact that God chose us before the foundations of the world. This statement has caused many a debate over the years, but as is the case in many spiritual debates, it’s the way we twist God’s words that usually cause the conflict. God’s words are actually quite plain!
Today we continue pastor Jim’s series in Ephesians with a final look at chapter one, verse three. Blessed blessings - that’s what Paul expresses in this well-known verse. And what a blessing it is to be loved by God and to serve Him as well.
Some books of the Bible begin on a rather normal note - a greeting along with the purpose of the letter. But the Book of Ephesians begins in the Heavenlies with all the spiritual blessings found in Christ. And in the opening section - Paul the Apostle shows us how God wants to bless us, and how to receive those blessings.
When you need encouragement, there’s nothing like receiving a letter from a close friend. A letter is even different from a phone call, because it requires a lot more effort - and thus has more personal meaning. The church in Ephesus received just such a letter from Paul, and we’ll continue our new series in Ephesians next on Growing in the Word.
The book of Ephesians is considered by many biblical scholars to be Paul’s greatest work. The length and breadth of Christianity is explored and expounded on in these six chapters, and studying Ephesians is a life-changing experience. Paul had spent a good deal of time with the people of Ephesus, and he now sought to reignite the fire of their faith.
Today - we’re going to begin a journey through the book of Ephesians. This letter speaks about the glory of God’s Grace. As we begin today in chapter one - Jim wants us to consider how we can experience peace with God through His grace.
Many a great novel has the reader on the edge of their seat. until the very last page. Now, the Apostle Paul was truly a great writer, and he left some nifty material for his readers near the end, as he penned Galatians, and we’ll see just what it was as we wrap up our lengthy study of this epistle today.
Is there anything in life quite as sweet and refreshing as the love and devotion of a true friend? We are sometimes too quick to criticize our friends and neighbors, but today on Growing in the Word we’ll discover how important it is that we support them, as part of our ongoing study of Galatians.
How should the church respond to believers when they fall into sin? We’ll talk about it on this edition of Growing in the Word, as pastor Jim Jarrett resumes his series through Galatians. What’s the proper balance between restoration and church discipline?
Today, we find ourselves nearing the end of our study of Galatians. The key to understanding Paul’s point here in chapter six is to understand where the Galatian believers were in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul had shared a simple message with them - salvation through faith in Christ. But in the ensuing months, the Galatians had fallen prey to some false teaching.
One of satan’s greatest weapons against Christians is discouragement. A discouraged Christian is an ineffective Christian. I think we’ve all been there. Yes we can grow weary in doing good, and grow tired, but what will keep us going? Where do we get the staying power to fight the good fight with consistency? Let’s talk about that today on Growing in the Word. We’ll be in Galatians six, as we near the end of our study through this amazing letter from the Apostle Paul.

There’s a tendency to want to shake our finger in disgust, but as we see, it is at that time when the Bible calls us to restore the individual with gentleness, and use practical love.

The Holy Spirit makes us what we ought to be – more loving and joyful. We’ll learn how today on Growing in the Word. We’ve come in our study of Galatians to chapter five verses sixteen through eighteen, where Paul describes what it is like to walk in the Spirit.
Today on Growing in the Word we’ll learn more about the law and its value. We’ll also learn how to apply the law and how it applies to us. Let’s find our place in Galatians chapter five. It’s there, we’re given important insight about the moral law of God, compared to the judicial and ceremonial law.
Today we discuss the freedom in the Spirit here on this edition of Growing in the Word, from Calvary Bible Church of Palo Cedro. Pastor Jim Jarrett will be continuing his verse by verse study of Galatians on today's broadcast. We aim to finish chapter five, verses thirteen through eighteen.
The plan today is to cover Galatians chapter five and verses thirteen through eighteen. Pastor Jim is going to stress that we have been set free by the Spirit of God. True freedom, isn’t license to sin, for that only leads to bondage. Rather, true freedom is the privilege and power to live as God has called us.
Today we continue verse by verse through the book of Galatians. In chapter five we’re warned about legalism and how to guard against it. First by helping us discern if legalism has crept into our lives. And then by addressing some critical issues, such as: Are you using the freedom you have in Christ as an excuse for bad behavior? Oh, it happens a lot.
There’s an issue in today’s Christian church - legalism. You’d be surprised how just a little bit of legalism can hinder your relationship with the Lord and others. So, we must be alert to this reality and guard against it. Today’s edition of Growing in the Word will help us do just that. We continue making our way through the New Testament book of Galatians. And in chapter five we’re told to stand strong in the freedom we have in Christ.
Pastor Jim Jarrett will show us today what the apostle Paul is referring to when he told the Galatians “They have fallen from grace,” here on today’s broadcast. Through it all we’ll receive a very strong but needed warning not to pursue self-righteousness.
Today on Growing in the Word, pastor Jim Jarrett continues his study of Galatians, and has us turn to the fifth chapter. It’s here that the apostle Paul combats the legalists of his day with the message of God’s grace.
Do you believe in following the rules? I assume you would answer “yes” to that question, but let’s face it, it’s pretty difficult to follow all the rules in life. That’s the problem man has faced since the beginning - in order to be justified in God’s eyes, we must follow all the rules - perfectly. That’s impossible. But God, in His wonderful love for us, gave us an out, and it’s called Grace.
As we complete our look at Galatians chapter four today, we will be reminded again that many a false notion about God and His grace has started with just a whisper, and then grown to a full blown forest fire of blasphemous doctrine. We can see it all around us today.

Today we find ourselves in chapters four of Galatians. The subject once again is law and grace - the flesh and the Spirit. As pastor Jim has mentioned often, if we try to live by the law, we’ll be in bondage. We are set free when we trust in Christ. And then, His grace is applied to our lives and we’re set free. Additionally, a lot of people have a mistaken definition of the phrase “Christian Liberty”. Is it freedom to do whatever we want?
Here in America, we consider it a courtesy to open and close a door for another person. Some of us guys forget that about the fourth or fifth year of marriage, right? Today, we’ll observe God opening and closing doors for His children, and specifically the apostle Paul. God sovereignly orchestrates the events of our lives, and that can be a great comfort to know. Pastor Jim is in Galatians chapter four.
The one way to God is by grace through faith. Paul’s epistle to the Galatians really drives that home time and time again, and today on Growing in the Word we revisit this glorious truth. Pastor Jim Jarrett will be in chapter four, as he brings us a message that addresses something that was taking place in Galatia back then, and taking place in our society today - a backsliding church.
Today we find ourselves in chapter four of Galatians, paying close attention to verses eight through eleven. The subject is a serious one, and one that is very relevant for today – the backsliding church.
The Bible teaches that we’ve been adopted by God Himself, and we’ll see what a true blessing that is today on Growing in the Word. We pick up where we left off last time in our continuing study of Galatians. As we re-enter chapter four, it’s important for us to look at what’s ours in Christ.

The purpose of seatbelt laws is to save lives. Just as there are reasons for that particular rule on the roadways, there is also a purpose behind the law of God. We’ll see what that is today on Growing in the Word as we continue our survey of Galatians. Pastor Jim brings us now a study based on the last seven verses of chapter three.
If we look at God’s law as a set of rules to follow in oder to get to heaven, we miss then point. We cannot obey the law perfectly, and the law points that out to us, so we must turn to faith in Christ for our salvation. We’ll be in chapter three, paying particular attention to verses twenty-three through twenty-nine.
It’s one thing to fail when trying to live up to our ideals and it’s another thing to pretend that we actually do. It’s what’s on the inside that really counts. And yet too often we pretend everything is all right when it’s not. What’s wrong? And how do we fix it? We’ll find out today on Growing in the Word
Today on Growing in the Word we return to the New Testament book of Galatians. And we’ve been exploring the great redemption that Jesus accomplished for us.
Our money says “In God We Trust”. But do we? It’s one thing to say that we trust God, but it’s quite another to live that way. Pastor Jim will challenge us today to really sell out completely to trust God completely.
The law of God has no power to prevent sin - or redeem the sinner. Only grace can do that. That’s our theme on today’s program as pastor Jim takes us to Galatians chapter three. The churches in Galatia had been deceived by false teachers, who had convinced them that they could be saved by works rather than grace. Let’s head over to Galatians chapter three, verses six through fourteen and find out what the Apostle Paul had to say on this important issue.
Trying to earn or merit God’s blessing is what the church in Galatia had fallen into. They compromised the gospel of grace by legalism. It’s a common mistake that’s still made today. And it’s important we understand this so we don’t fall into the same error.
Currently on the broadcast we’re traveling verse by verse through the book of Galatians. We continue in chapter three today, and find here a good old fashion scolding, if you will. Paul pulled no punches when it came to proclaiming the gospel message and the need for repentance and faith, in order to be saved. A lot of the folks in Galatia were not prepared to be confronted so boldly!
Jesus paid the price to perfect us before a holy and perfect God. Isn’t that awesome? However, there are some people who still try to get to heaven by being “perfect”. It simply won’t work. The members of the church in Galatia had a similar issue. They had been tricked into believing that following rules was the path to heaven.
We all need someone in our lives who is not afraid to “tell it like it is”. The Galatians had a friend like that, and his name was Paul. We’ll see just what he had to say to the Galatians today on Growing in the Word. Pastor Jim Jarrett is taking us through this challenging epistle, and we can see that the Galatians were much like many Christians today – they thought they needed to add something to their faith in order to please God and get to heaven.
We are studying Galatians chapter two right now, and today pastor Jim will again remind us that as Christians, we should die to ourselves and let Christ live within us. Given the choice of trusting God with your life, or going it on your own, which would you choose?
Today, pastor Jim will talk about the ultimate insult - believing that there is some way you can earn your way into heaven by following rules, or doing good deeds. Who is insulted by that? Jesus Himself. He died a painful death on a cross so that we can go to heaven by simply having faith in Him.
Once again today, pastor Jim will be discussing the ages-old debate about faith and works. Many people think they have to work their way to heaven. That’s pretty much the way human beings think - we have to do something to get something. There are many religions out there that tell their followers that, indeed, they have to knock on doors, or pass out tracts, or do some other thing to get to heaven.
Pastor Jim Jarrett is currently taking us through the book of Galatians - a letter written by Paul to a group of believers who had been seriously misled by false teachers. They had been taught that there were tasks they had to do to be saved.
On today’s program, pastor Jim continues his in depth look at Galatians chapter two. In order to really understand what the Apostle Paul is saying in this chapter, it’s important to know what was going on in the churches in Galatia at the time. In a word, the problem was hypocrisy. The Galatians talked a good game, but they actually had let false teaching creep into their midst, and were preaching a gospel that contradicted the truth.
What we see here is a confrontation between two of the real pillars of the post-resurrection Christian church, Peter and Paul. Peter was the guy at fault here, and Paul confronted him because he was guilty of being a hypocrite. I know, I know, if we kicked all the hypocrites out of the church, there would be nothing but empty chairs!
Paul was quick to point people to Christ, and eager to share the Gospel! Many around him found this message disturbing as we’ll see today on Growing in the Word. We can expect the same sort of reaction today. Pastor Jim Jarrett will underscore the gospel of grace alone through faith alone on today’s broadcast as part of our continuing study of Galatians. We’ve just begun a look at chapter two, where we read Paul’s passionate defense of the gospel.
As we begin a look at chapter two today, Paul has set the stage for his theme in this letter. The churches in Galatia had fallen victim to false teaching. Of course, there was some backlash, of course, but here in chapter two, Paul defends his authority to preach the gospel, and he defends the gospel message as well.
Today on the program, pastor Jim will takes us once again to Galatians chapter one, as Paul shares his own personal testimony of how Jesus Christ saved him . The people of Galatia needed to hear this because they had straying in their doctrine. They had been deceived into believing that some more than faith in Jesus was required for salvation.
Today on Growing in the Word, pastor Jim Jarrett will help us get a grip on the reality of eternity - and what is required for us to spend eternity with God in a place called heaven. In our study of the book of Galatians we are in a section that is biographical in nature. We are considering the first seventeen years of Paul’s ministry.
The Galatians were Paul’s spiritual children, and they had strayed from the gospel message Paul had taught them - salvation through faith in Christ alone. You can imagine that he was not happy, so he wrote them a letter - and that’s what we are studying here on Growing in the Word. Pastor Jim Jarrett takes us to Galatians chapter one today, and more of Paul’s stern words to the churches in Galatia.
Remember when you were young and did something naughty? Remember getting talked to sternly by your parents? Remember that feeling of shame? Well, as we continue in Galatians one today, we are going to continue to see Paul’s angry reaction to his beloved friends in Galatia turning to a false gospel. As Jim has mentioned before, this is the only letter Paul wrote that contains absolutely no encouragement. It’s a good old fashioned dressing-down!
The churches in Galatia had strayed away from the truths Paul had taught them when the church was formed. Salvation through faith was the corner stone, and the Galatians had listened to the wrong teachers after Paul had left, and now they believed they had to work for their salvation. That’s the same false doctrine that many people are falling for today - even in the strongest Christian churches.
Pastor Jim Jarrett has just begun a new series in Galatians, and in chapter one we see that this letter is really about Paul versus the false teachers. The Galatians had been fooled into believing a different gospel message, and Paul’s letter sets the record straight that a it is through faith and faith alone that we are saved, and not by any task or deed we perform.
The Apostle Paul was not pleased with what was going on at the churches located in Galatia. They had fallen for some false doctrine - and there were very few things that ticked Paul off like false teaching. Are we saved by faith, or are there things we can do to work our way to heaven? That was the basic problem going on in Galatia - they had been fooled into thinking that works would be enough. Let’s join pastor Jim for the conclusion of his first message in what promises to be an awesome time in the book of Galatians.

The world today has sought to make Jesus into some sort of hippie proselytizer, or a positive-thinking guru. He is nothing of the sort. He God in human flesh. We hope you had a blessed Easter Sunday! Today we continue our series titled “Who is Jesus?”. We will be looking today at Colossians chapter one, verses fifteen through twenty. Sin has separated man from God. God simply cannot have anything to do with sin. He hates it. So Jesus came to earth and died on a cross to reconcile us with God. We just celebrated that truth this past weekend. Without the reconciliation Jesus provided, we would all have a death sentence hanging over our heads.
Today we bring you a special message for this special day, as we remember the great sacrifice Jesus made on the cross of Calvary. He died a painful and unjust death for a wonderful reason - to save us from the penalty of our sins. But if Jesus had died on the cross, and the story ended there, we would be in big trouble. But Jesus rose from the grave and walked out of the tomb, and bridged the gap between us and a perfect and Holy God.
With all of the turmoil going on in the world right now, isn’t it a comfort to know that God is in control? This coming Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s the most significant event in human history. Can you imagine going through life in this mixed-up and violent world without the promise of eternal life in heaven? That promise was cemented in stone when the Lord rose from the grave and walked out of that tomb.
Prices for everything are out of control, and morality is on the endangered list. In times of trial, it’s comforting to realize that our Lord Jesus Christ is in charge of everything. We are in Colossians chapter one today, as we continue pastor Jim’s new series titled “Who is Jesus?”, Pastor Jim will share some truths about our savior as we study this essential scripture. There are a lot of people these days who think God created our world and then turned us loose to work things out for ourselves. It’s kind of like tossing a kid in a swimming pool without teaching them to swim first. That couldn’t be further from the truth. God is working in all aspects of our lives to bring us to a better understanding of Him and how we need to worship Him.
It’s interesting to observe the picture John paints of the Messiah. Right from the outset, He makes it clear that Jesus is God, who came into the world as the true light to offer life to as many as would receive Him. And it’s a message the world today desperately needs to hear and receive. Today we’ll set our sights on verse fourteen through eighteen of John chapter one.
When we want to become an expert on something we need to learn everything that we can about it. We find everything written about it and read it, we try to observe what it is doing or has done. We get on the internet and search for all the knowledge we can find. Well, Pastor Jim is in the early stages of his study of the book of John and we are currently in the first chapter where we go back to the beginning.
Every single person on earth must ultimately answer that question, and the answer you give determines where you spend eternity. With that enormous thought in mind, wouldn’t you agree that we need to know what God’s word has to say on the subject? Who is Jesus to you? Is He your savior? We all know of people who claim to be a Christian, and yet their lifestyle says otherwise. Perhaps they’re constantly using drugs, or living with their boyfriend or girlfriend. Today we again turn to Ephesians five for more no-nonsense advice from the apostle Paul on the subject of sexual sin. I don’t have to remind you where our country is on the subject of sexual sin. Turn on the TV and you’ll quickly see how far we have sunk. And Christians aren’t immune from sexual sin, either. Today we look at Paul’s call for sexual purity, in Ephesians chapter five.
We have spent a little over a week in chapter five so far, and we have many more wonderful truths to glean from this amazing letter from the Apostle Paul. One of the most obvious indicators of the wrong direction our society is heading is in the area of sexual attitudes. Jim has plenty to say on the subject.

Think back over your life to the worst thing someone has ever done to you. Forgiving people, even when they hurt us, is actually a command, but why should we do it? In fact it didn't take him very long at all in his first epistle to make mention of it. While election has been at the center of controversy and many arguments, it was never intended to be that way. In fact as we'll see today on Growing in the Word election should lead us to worship.
There are a lot of things the Bible proclaims that we may not fully understand this side of heaven, and perhaps election falls into that category. But if the Bible teaches it, and it does, then we shouldn’t shy away from talking about it and embrace it. Today on Growing In the Word we’ll explore the doctrine of election, and we’ll see what Peter has to say about it.

As we look around us, I think we can all agree that the world is getting more and more hostile toward Christianity. We saw it in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we begin an encore presentation of an important series, titled “What’s Happening To America?”. Pastor Jim has taught some important and timely messages in the past, but I think you’ll agree that what he’s going to talk about today is perhaps the most important topic he’s dealt with. Our country is experiencing a moral decline, the likes of which we’ve never experienced before. The question for Christians to ask themselves is this - what can we do about it? In this first message, pastor Jim will use Psalm two as a reference point.
As we study James chapter two today we’re going to discuss a subject of great importance. We place the spotlight on the relationship between faith and works. James says faith without works is dead, while Paul said we are saved by faith, apart from any works! Is there a way for these two statements to coexist? We’ll find out today on our broadcast.
Today, pastor Jim is going to finish up a message based in James chapter two, titled “Fulfilling The Royal Law”. What is the “royal law”? Well, it goes by another name you might be familiar with, “the golden rule”. Are you a law-abiding citizen? I think most of us would say yes to that question. We generally try to obey the rules. The law we’re going to consider today is much more important than any law on the books - It’s the law in the book - the bible. In James chapter two, James writes about “The Royal Law” and how we can fulfill it.
We have thousands of laws on the books in all fifty states, and every time the Congress considers a new law, you need a wheelbarrow to cart the thousands of pages around. Today we are going to talk about a different law - a law described by James as “The Royal Law”.
James didn’t equivocate when it came to proclaiming the truth of the gospel, and the consequences of breaking the rules! One thing that James stressed in chapter two is the sin of partiality. It comes in a lot of forms, and some of them are really destructive. Racism and bigotry have no place in the life of a Christian.
Glad you could join us today, because Jim has a very important and timely message to share, as we continue his new series through the epistle of James. Are you ever guilty of partiality? Now, in a lot of cases, it’s harmless. For instance, if you’re partial to Pistachio Ice Cream, that’s fine. But what about being partial based on prejudices? That’s a major problem in our society right now. People are being judged because of their skin color, their political affiliation, and even their nationality. That’s wrong, and that’s a sin!
I think you’ll agree that our society has taken a step backwards in the area of race relations in the last decade or so. What is the solution to this enormous problem? The media and our political leaders talk a lot about it, but not much changes. That’s because talking about it isn’t the solution - we need a change of heart and a revival! Pastor Jim is in James chapter two.

Think back to when you were a kid and you received a new bicycle for the first time. Can you remember the excitement? Now, what was the first thing you did with that new bike? You took it out and rode it! What would your parents have thought if you put it in the garage and left it there? Well, that’s what a lot of Christians do with the word of God - they receive this wonderful gift, and keep it to themselves. James has some good advice for us today - be “doers” of the word!

This is an extremely important and relevant section of scripture because James urges us to not just hear the word of God, but to also put what we hear into action. As we look around us in the year 2023, we see a multitude of people walking around lost, broken and directionless. They need to hear the gospel message, and they need to see that message lived out in our lives.

I’d like to recommend a really good book to you today - The Bible. It’s the best selling book of all time and has been translated into more languages than any other book - by a wide margin. A survey was given to four thousand attendees in over one hundred evangelical churches across the U.S. They were asked, "Do you feel the preaching on Sunday relates to what's going on in your life?" Over eighty percent saw virtually no connection between what they heard on Sunday morning and what they faced on Monday morning. That’s a startling statistic. What should be done? What’s to be done?
