Emotions play an important role in how we think, feel, react and behave; they are an essential part of being human. Everyone goes through tough chapters in life where they experience mental and emotional stress, like sadness, anxiety, fear, and grief, for example. Acknowledging how you feel and committing to take care of yourself emotionally, creatively, physically, and spiritually, can help turn negative experiences and the thoughts and feelings that come along with it, into change, growth, and healing. In a book that's both provocative and radical, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, M.D., author of A Mind of Your Own, charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free.
This is the Empowered Mama Podcast.
Anxiety and depression are a mental health epidemic, with anxiety disorders taking the lead for the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 18.1% of the national population and 260 million people globally (According to the Anxiety and Depression Association). 322 million people worldwide live with depression, which occurs more often in women than men (According to the Anxiety and Depression Association).
Mental health issues can happen to anyone...the mom-next-door experiencing Postpartum Depression and/or Postpartum Anxiety after the birth of her baby, the successful entrepreneur experiencing panic attacks who's been diagnosed with Panic Disorder, the nurse hiding crippling OCD from her co-workers, the wife suffering Major Depressive Disorder from the loss of a baby or her military spouse...the SAHM moms, the working moms, your best friend...you.
People who experience any form of a mood disorder know how crippling these feelings and the "new normal" they seem to be facing can be. Treating any type of mental illness often requires a combination approach, ranging from talk therapy with a psychologist, meds, psychiatrist care, and/or lifestyle adjustments or changes. You are not alone in this journey, and we support you seeking help if and when you -- or someone you know -- notices a change in your thoughts and feelings. This is especially important to be on the lookout for postpartum, when a new mom may be susceptible to Postpartum Depression, Postpartum OCD, Postpartum Anxiety, and/or Postpartum Psychosis.
Medications can be a life-saving necessity for some with mental illness, and others may wish to seek a holistic route -- or a blend. We support whatever form of treatment works for you, whether that means going to weekly therapy with a psychologist, taking meds prescribed by your licensed doctor or psychiatrist, changing your diet and lifestyle, or any combination.
Disclaimer: Always seek medical advice from a board-certified therapist, psychiatrist, and/or physician before beginning any new treatment plan and deciding what approach to take on your mental health journey.
Today, we are interviewing Kelly Brogan, M.D., a holistic psychiatrist who specializes in treating mental health through a natural approach. We know this route of treatment is not for everyone. We know meds save lives. We also know that there are potential ways to feel better outside of the traditional western medicine scope.

We often second guess our choices as parents because we are told to do things in a certain way, even if those choices don't seem ideal for us. My guest today hopes to change this. She wants to inspire moms to make their own choices, not conform to societal or cultural norms, and to create a path that’s authentic to their lives and identities.
I’m super excited today to meet my guest Sri.
She started a very cool website and podcast called Big Little Choices. It began with the intention of creating a space where women (especially moms) could share their choices without fearing judgment. There is no one right way to parent - whether it be how your kids eat, sleep, learn or play. It really comes down to what works for you and for your family.

As any new parent knows, there is an abundance of often-conflicting advice hurled at you from doctors, family, friends, and strangers on the internet. From the earliest days, parents get the message that they must make certain choices around feeding, sleep, and schedule or all will be lost. There's a rule—or three—for everything. But the benefits of these choices can be overstated, and the trade-offs can be profound. How do you make your own best decision? Emily Oster is my guest today. Her goal is to make you less confused, more confident and less judgmental of parents who make different choices.

So if you’ve ever felt:Frustrated, stuck, and like you’re spinning your wheelsUnsure of what to focus on because everything feels urgentBusy all the time, yet not reaching your goalsOverwhelmed and anxious about how you’re going to get it all doneThen you will love this episode. Because she’s been there. And she has figured out how to have success without the stress.

This episode could change your life. If you are craving calm, wanting to let go of stress, desiring to be more mindful in your day, listen in. I share a new approach, that’s actually quite old, on how to do life and motherhood.
This year, I have started to delve into a deeper understanding and practice.
You might not realize but there are many different types of meditation. You can meditate with mantras, or envisioning a journey or anchoring around a sound. Right now, I have been studying zen meditation.
Zen meditation is simply seated. upright in good posture, paying careful attention to breathing in your belly until you are fully alert and present. There are no steps, no-frills. In fact, meditating with a goal such as quieting your mind is very un zen. It’s a state of mind of just being present in the moment.
But today's podcast isn’t about zen meditation. It’s the zen part that I want to share with you. The more I read, the more I am feeling like there are ancient foundations behind what has been in my heart to share. A path to the direction that I’ve been pointing towards. Learning about zen is giving me words to something that has been growing inside of me.
Today, I want to share with you a mindset that is truly changing my life. It’s like a lightbulb going off. And I want to share that light with you

You have heard of childcare. Even eldercare, but how about Mothercare? My guest today guides new and veteran mothers alike through the best practices to care for themselves as they care for their children. As a new mom, she would have described her entry to motherhood as a failure to thrive. her transition to maternal life was a messy, painful journey. But she found that the birth of a mother deserves to be tended to in much the same way as the birth of a baby, with attention, devotion and the deepest kind of love.
This is The Empowered Mama Podcast.
Dayna M. Kurtz’s Favorite Quote: "In giving birth to our babies, we may find that we give birth to new possibilities within ourselves." Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn
If Dayna Kurtz was to get a tattoo with one word that she valued, what would it be? Perhaps the word "Atman," a Sanksrit word meaning "inner self" or "soul." It's a reminder that we are something other than our work, our egos, our bodies. It's easy to get wrapped up in this transient elements, but they are just that--transient--whereas the "atman" is ever-lasting. There's comfort in that.

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
This is one of my favorite quotes from Gandhi.
Let’s focus on those first two sentences. “Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words. If this is true, then we should put great effort into training our thoughts and our words to create our destiny. I have been a self-development junkie for decades but the one thing I did not buy into were affirmations. In this episode, I will tell you why I changed my mind. And why I think affirmations are great for kids.

If you find yourself running away from fear, you’re running in the wrong direction. Fear demands that we move toward it, face it and hear its messages. When we fail to do this, the price is chronic anxiety, sleeplessness, damaged relationships, skyrocketing pharmaceutical use, and more. In her enlightening new book Joy from Fear, my guest explains that fear is not the enemy we thought it was; fear, when faced with awareness, is the powerful ally and best friend we all need.

We joke about mommy juice or mommy needs wine. But it’s really not a joke. I’m hearing from more and more moms that it’s actually quite a problem. Mommy drinking may be normalizing alcoholism. But how do you know if it's a problem for you? Today, I interview Rosemary O’Connor, author of A Sober Mom’s Guide To Recovery. You will hear about how she hit rock bottom and rebuilt a wonderful life without alcohol.

Why does society assume that poor health (and our sanity) is the cost of motherhood? Why is this the message told to moms? No more. We cure diseases. We create artificial ears using 3-D printers. We solved how to pee in space. We can figure this out too. My guest today has done just that.

Sometimes, it feels like we are just living on the surface of life. Superficial experiences and connections. Getting through each day on autopilot. Small talk with team members, friends, and family. Surfing the net and social media. I feel like we are missing something. I feel like we aren’t “all in” on this life thing.
With my kids: How was your day? Fine. What did you do? Nothing.
With Jason: How was work? Fine. Tell me about it. You know, the usual stuff.
I know I’m showing up in life, which is half the battle. Woody Allen said 80% of success is just showing up. So I’m doing that. But sometimes I wonder if I’m just showing up. Am I really giving my all?

After years of marketing beauty products for a living, my guest knew there must be a better option for a natural deodorant. After becoming a mom, she chose not to go back to work at her thriving career in the beauty industry. She decided to become a mom boss herself and create the product she dreamed of.
This episode is brought to you by FIT4MOM, my company. We offer fitness for every stage of motherhood, but you’re gonna see that it is so much more than fitness. It’s about community and fun and a place where I promise, you will belong. So go check out FIT4MOM.com. If you’re already a member can you just go tell a friend about it? Do you have big things you want to do in your life but can't find the time when your life is full with work and motherhood? I so get it! But there's a metaphor that if you chop a tree three times a day, eventually that tree will come down. What if you did that with your big goals? In today's episode, I'm going to share how I chop away at my goals even during my busiest times.
Today’s Quote from Robert Collier:

Wait, are you just going to jump into the new year without taking some time to review the last one? When an athlete finishes a game, they review to see what went well and what could be done better. When the military completes a mission, they debrief to identify areas of improvement. When a business completes a project, they meet to see what they missed and how they can do better next time. So why do we leap into the next year without reviewing the last one? In today’s episode, I’m going to share my personal (very personal) review of my year.

Luckily there are so many more options today and one of the best for fresh baby food is from our friend Cassandra Curtis, founder of Once Upon A Farm. Listen in to see why she started her company, why her baby food is different and how she does the motherhood. This is The Empowered Mama Podcast.

Akola is a nonprofit jewelry brand that empowers women in Uganda and Dallas, TX to redesign their stories. Each piece is handcrafted by 1 of 500 women in poverty working to redesign the future of their families. 100% of Akola revenue is reinvested in our mission to help these women transform their families and communities.
Every dollar spent on Akola products is reinvested in our mission to provide work opportunities and training to women in poverty in Dallas, TX and Uganda. Additionally, Akola relies on donations to provide social programs that teach women how to use their income to create meaningful change in their families and communities.
In 2006, Brittany Merrill Underwood founded Akola when she was a sophomore at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX after she met a Ugandan woman who cared for 24 street children in her home. Inspired to action, Brittany discovered that by training and employing women who are deemed “unemployable” in their communities, and guaranteeing them a monthly income, Akola could care for thousands of children. Today, Akola provides training, dependable living-wage work opportunities and holistic education programs to over 500 women in Uganda and Dallas, TX who care for approximately 4,000 dependents.
These women are courageous – they are stepping up to make a change in their lives – and to support their families and communities. Akola jewelry represents a story, a life, a woman, a family – hope – dignity... that's what you are wearing when you wear Akola. A product that heals – a product that restores. A first job. A first step. A new life. We are excited for you to share the women's stories whose lives have been changed as you wear their jewelry with pride.

If you love paper, planners and all things pretty, I bet you know Erin Condren. Erin shares her early days designing her life and her business with her babies by her side. She has built a multi-million dollar empire around beautiful designs and her famous life planner.
Erin Condren went from working 12-hour days in the apparel industry to becoming a stay-at-home mom of TWO. She developed a case of cabin fever and began searching the internet for career opportunities she could do from home. With a tight budget and an active imagination, she began making note cards for friends, as birthday gifts, new baby announcements and hostess gifts. A friend encouraged her to sell her designs at a "shopping party" at her home in June 2004 and the rest is history.
Since then, it has evolved from just note cards and stickers to LifePlanners™ stylized organizers, notebooks and so much more.

It’s time to shrink your to-do list and to create the space you need to flourish in work and life. In today’s episode, we meet Empowered Mama Tiffany Dufu, author of Drop The Ball.
When people ask Tiffany what she does, she simply says She advances women and girls. Beyond being an author and speaker, she relentlessly pursues one goal: a world in which women’s gifts and voices are fully harnessed for the benefit of all of us.
To say that I admire this woman does not do it justice. It is going to be my mission to find a way to one day work with her.
