The 1960 Winter Olympics were the first ones broadcast nationally in the US. And that meant they needed to be ready for tv. Who better than Walt Disney to put on a great show?

Admiral Fowler joined the Walt Disney company in the early 1950s, and was primarily responsible for the construction of Disneyland, then carried forward his work to be the overall project manager for Disney world. General Potter joined the Disney company after the NY Worlds Fair, and was the construction manager for Disney world. He wound up creating many of the innovations that came to be in the central Florida area. Both became friends with Walt, and without them, Disney world probably would never have been built.

Walt Disney had a plan for urban design - and a central theme was how to get people around his city of tomorrow. He envisioned monorails for longer trips, and a peoplemover for local circuits. The WED designers laid out plans for both, and prototyped the people mover in DIsneyLand before it opened in Florida. It is a clever and innovative means of transportation that never seemed to catch on. I talk about it, and play the audio tracks that were on the attraction over the years.

I didn't attend D23, but I got all the updates...and I have some thoughts about it all. Epcot is about to undergo a major overhaul, and while I think its "needed," it changes the very nature of the park. Plus, there were plenty of other updates that I talk about. I hope I don't come off as negative - I have strong feelings about the legacy and history, and I feel like the company isn't about that anymore...
Of course, I'm still interested in the history and that's why I started this YouTube Channel! Lost and Found in Walt Disney World.

I was in the Orlando area last week, and made an effort to see Galaxy's Edge - but it didn't work out (sadly). I talk about my time in the area, and about Star Wars Galaxy's Edge - and the emphasis on the newer episodes. I have a theory about why this is, and it is really just a guess.

Disney had never managed hotels before, but they decided to get into the business when they opened Walt Disney World. I take a look back at Disney getting into the hotel business in central Florida. There are two parts - the addition of hotels along Hotel Plaza Blvd, and the Hilton Inn South that taught the new Cast Members how to run a hotel.

As I intended to, I visited Walt Disney World last week, and spent a couple of days doing some fun things. Hopefully, I caught some of the things you asked me for....by far my favorite part of this visit was people watching: we had some amusing interactions.

Notes: Galaxy's Edge will either be terrific or it will merit a yawn....hard to say which....but they've invested a lot of time and effort (not to mention money) into the parks to make it happen, and the sheer size is massive. So it certainly has the potential. I can't wait to see it.

Overview: Back in 1989, the Disney MGM Studios opened as a real working movie studio. They let us in on some movie making secrets and featured some cool little shows that showed how things work. Overview: Today, I take a look around to see what's cooking - literally. I'm on a quest to find vegetarian dining at all 4 theme parks, and in some resorts. Here's to hoping you take some time on your next trip to check out some of these terrific options!
Notes: Its not all that hard to find really good (and tasty!) vegetarian options around the parks at counter service restaurants. And even vegan options are popping up more and more.

Overview: Today’s podcast is a tribute to the Golden Horseshoe which begat the Diamond Horseshoe at WDW which begat the Tokyo Disneyland version of the Golden Horseshoe. I talk about it’s history, what Walt created, and Disney Legends Betty Taylor (aka Slu Foot Sue) and Wally Boag (aka Pecos Bill).
Notes:I find it intriguing how much Walt loved the old west and included many elements at DisneyLand.
I wanted to point out that while it’s clearly a “saloon” and modeled as such, Walt was careful to have Slu Foot Sue refer to it as a “cafe”
The audio of Wally Boag as Jose is pulled from the “barker bird” who sat outside the Tiki Room for many years.

Overview: I visited Walt Disney World in late October as part of my annual tradition of enjoying the Food and Wine Festival. This time, I went at it alone, but made new friends as I went to various booths. And since I was there, I visited all the parks to check out construction activities, see what was new, and to of course ride a few favorite attractions.
Notes: I had some fun hanging around, working on my video series, and enjoying some food! I noticed with iOS12 my iPhone automatically added a location name to each recording, which was pretty slick. And except for one recording, it was accurate. The one that was wrong was when I was near the Tusker House in the Animal Kingdom. For some reason, it said the recording was "Restroom" which I thought was pretty amusing.

Overview: In 1993, Nestle took over as the title sponsor for The Land. One of the changes they made was to close The Kitchen Kabaret, ending the run of veggie, veggie, fruit, fruit. In March of 1994, Food Rocks was opened in its place. While it was similar in nature - food singing about good nutrition - it was quite a different show.
Notes: Food Rocks was sort of like a rock concert, and featured the voice talents of real world singers such as Tone Loc, The Pointer Sisters, and Chubby Checker.

Overview: After a renovation, Symbiosis was unfortunately closed. Opened in its place was The Circle of Life: an Environmental Fable. This show stretched the nature of The Land to now talk about conservation through the lens of our friends from the Lion King.
Notes: While Symbiosis was a cinematic marvel, The Circle of Life was less so, though it did reuse scenes from the original film

Overview: Within the Land pavilion was a remarkable move called Symbiosis that celebrated man's creative partnership with the land. It included marvels of past and present technologies and accomplishments. I talk about this film, and what it was all about.
Notes: The film was directed by Paul Gerber, and he actually brought people to see it as a living resume. It was shot in 70mm (large film format) and included shots from around the globe.

Overview: The Land is another of Epcot’s opening day pavilions in future world. The objective was to look at the earth, agriculture, and ecology. in the original design, the large atrium would have been an arboretum. It featured a large mosaic, a pretty amazing film, a boat ride, and a show about food.
Notes: The pavilion has been through three general iterations in its history, based on sponsorship. But it still kept its focus on earth-based science.

Overview: Today's podcast is a look back at the original ride in the Land Pavilion: Listen to the Land. Come along and listen to a live guide recording from sometime in the early 1980s. Its fun. And the song is great!

Overview: My daughter had an opportunity to go on a school field trip to the Animal Kingdom, and I went along to chaperone. It was fun, but very different. I talk about my day.
Notes: My problem with the Navi'i river journey is that there's no story, nothing to grab you. It looks nice, but is pointless. IMHO that's exactly what Avatar (the movie) was so, I guess mission accomplished! And to clarify, I only had enough time at the end of the day to do one attraction - and the short wait time was appealing since I still had to get home.

verview: Today, its a dose of Disney news. I've got goings on in the WDW parks, and talk about transportation around WDW. I've also got some things outside of the Orlando the park - namely some new technology Disney has come up with, and an update on 21st Century Fox.
Notes:The monorail sign at the top of this entry was added to all cars after there was an incident with one monorail where the door wouldn't close. To be clear, not every car in every monorail has a problem - its just an ongoing maintenance problem.

Overview: I caught the movie Black Panther, and wanted to take a few minutes and talk about it. In short: I enjoyed it. Way to go Disney!
Notes: This is the second movie I've seen in the "superhero" realm (the first being Wonder Woman). As I note in the podcast, I enjoyed both so much, it might be time to catch up on the movies I've missed.
Overview:The Universe of Energy was an original Epcot opening day pavilion that (as you might expect) devoted itself to energy, starting with an overview, talking about fossil fuels, and then moved on to renewable resources. It was one of Disney’s longest (time wise) rides, lasting around 45 minutes. I talk you through the history and we go on a ride through the attraction.
Notes:The song was catchy and memorable. The concept was clever. It really was edutainment. And what's not to love about the dinosaur diorama. That was worth seeing every time!

Overview: Today's podcast is all about planning for a trip. My brother was coming in from out of town, and wondered how to get around without a car. And that’s a good question; I've never given it much thought.

Overview: Change is in the air! At D23, we heard about a number of new attractions, new experiences, changes, and other assorted announcements about the theme parks, movies, digital content and a whole lot more. And now that I've had time to think about it, I talk about it!

Overview:What did Dave do on his Summer Vacation? He went to Canada! But here's the thing - I was amazed at how much I related Disney to things that I saw, and how various exhibits are influenced by Disney in some way...I also took some time to learn more about Expo67, and I share that with you.

Overview: In the third part of the series, I talk about how the attraction changed in the 80s, when they lost the GE sponsorship, and 90s, when they made it more like the original attraction, except for the last scene which became a look at the turn of the 21st century. But they did restore the original theme song.
Notes: Jean Shepard took over as host in 1993. But the show is mostly the same today as it was back in 1964. Most of the props, set pieces, and the audio animatronics (with of course updates and maintenance) are the same ones used back then.
Overview: On this podcast, I talk about the carousel of progress and it's move to Florida as a part of the expansion of tomorrowland at the magic kingdom. And a new song is introduced: it's the best time of your life, which evokes the idea of carpe diem.
Notes: the kitchen is the focal point in all the scenes because that's where family comes together, and perhaps more importantly, that's where you would be most likely to see many GE appliances in one place.
Overview: On this episode, I start a retrospective of the carousel of progress. I first take a look at the general concept, then talk about its design, music, and it's installation at the worlds fair as Progressland. Afterward, I talk about the move to Disneyland.
Notes: "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow" is said to be One of Walt Disneys favorites because it considers the possibility of tomorrow. And the carousel of progress reflects a lot of good things - moments from the past, hope for the future, and family to name a few key themes.

Overview: If You Had Wings was a hybrid of dark ride, creative effort, and advertisement. I took a look back at how it came to be, what it was, and give you the ride audio. I also discuss the Omnimover ride technology. Remember, you do have wings...
Notes: If You Had Wings was quite memorable in spite of its limited effects, and lack of an immersive storyline. I suppose it was the music, the general fun of it all, and the fact that it was free in an era where you paid per ride. People talk about the attraction with reverence. Or at least I do.

Overview: Today's podcast is a tribute to the Norway pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, and theming. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. This was the last new pavilion added to World Showcase, way back in 1988!
Notes: Norway is intriguing because it represents the area known as Scandinavia generally. I am not a huge fan of what they did to get the fictional area of Arendale into the real country of Norway, even thought it was cute and clever.
I did enjoy putting together this retrospective on all 11 World Showcase pavilions. I hope you enjoyed listening to it, and learning more about the history of Epcot.

Kristi Petersen Schoonover has been going to WDW since the 1970s, and her favorite ride of all time was If You Had Wings—but since that’s long gone, the Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, and the Peoplemover top her list. Her collection, Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole, is a collection of ghost stories set in Disney Parks. Her novel, Bad Apple, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in December 2012, and her fiction has appeared in many magazines and anthologies. She lives in the Connecticut woods with her husband, occult specialist Nathan Schoonover, and still sleeps with the lights on.

Overview: Today's podcast is a tribute to the Morocco pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, and theming. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. It was the first pavilion to come to world showcase after opening day. This pavilion also has the distinction of being personally overseen by the King of Morocco.
Notes:The Moroccan pavilion has amazing aesthetics. It’s just beautiful, and makes you feel like you’re actually on the streets of or in a marketplace in Morocco. Part of that feeling is due to the smell of incense that wafts through the area, but more so it is because of the stunning mosaic artwork that fills the pavilion.

Overview: World showcase had grand plans and ambitions. There were 21 sites plotted for World Showcase when the original idea was pitched. But, we only got 9 on opening day. Many other countries were oh-so-close to being built, but alas it didn't happen. This is the story about some of the proposed countries.
Notes: Its still a remarkable thing that Disney was able to create a permanent worlds fair, that at the time was unprecedented and made the world a little smaller. But we can only speculate about what might have been had they managed to get even more countries to commit.

Overview: Today's podcast is a tribute to the Italy pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, and theming. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. Its the 9th (and final) Epcot opening-day pavilion I discuss. Come and take a visit to Venice with me.
Notes: Italy is unique among the pavilions, in that there is no ride or show in the pavilion. Its shopping, dining, and a couple of performers. Primarily the focus of this pavilion is its architecture and things you can see. No doubt its worth exploring, but its hard to "talk" about on a podcast.
Here is an interesting factoid that I don't mention in the podcast: The statues that look like marble in the Italy pavilion are hollow. Since they were so lightweight and liable to blow away during the slightest breeze, they were held in place with rods running from their base through the hollow center.

Overview: Today's podcast is all about a rather fun book called Disney Tale of the Tape, by Dan Sisneros. Essentially the book "pits" two things head-to-head and has judges compare them on various aspects. And yours truly was a judge in some of the bouts. Come and take a listen as Dan talks about the book and what it's all about.
Notes: This is a clever way to look at rides, accommodations, food, and more in a unique way. It was a lot of fun to contribute to it. Disney Tale of the Tape is available at Amazon
Overview: Joining me on today's podcast is Scott Shindeldecker, owner of epcotmanifesto.com. We talk all about Epcot, from its history, to what we loved (and still love) about it, to what's in store for its future ... at least as far as we know.
Notes: EPCOT (in all caps) was an intriguing idea from the mind of Walt himself. Whether even he could have pulled off is anyone's guess, but what the Disney company did manage to execute was a pretty good alternative. But the world has changed, and Epcot kind of stayed stagnant, so updates and changes are probably in order. Our hope is that these changes keep the essence of what the 70s designers of Epcot had in mind.
Scott's site is a blog about his perspective on the parks, and is a fun read if you are a devotee to the idea that is Epcot.
It's a podcast so big it spans three regular shows in length! You won't want to miss it!
Overview: On today's show I welcome a fellow Dave - the founder of MouseMingle.com to talk about the site, the service...and of course we talk a lot about fun things to do at the parks!
Notes: It was fun chatting with Dave about all things Disney. And hearing that he worked in the roundhouse and was an engineer on the DisneyLand Railroad was pretty cool. Of course we delve into that for a while and just chat about a shared "passion" for the Disney parks...and that's really what his site is all about anyway...
Overview: I saw Rogue One this past weekend, and I have a movie review of sorts for you! This episode does have spoilers, so I'll wait in your queue for you to watch the movie.
Notes: The movie was a lot of fun, and fills in many blanks in the storyline. But (limited spoilers here) it has an unexpected tone, and does a lot of setting up the storyline - perhaps too much to get to the final payoff. Meaning, its good scifi but not good star wars for a period of time.
Overview: Today's podcast is quite simply a ride around the Magic Kingdom on the Walt Disney World Railroad. Come along and imagine you are taking the scenic ride from Main Street, to Frontierland, to Fantasyland, and back to Mainstreet!
Notes: The WDW Railroad is comprised of 3 real working steam locomotive that was purchased and refurbished and run around the park.
Overview:On my most recent visit, I got a chance to see the new ride in the Norway pavilion: Frozen Ever After. Come along and hearthe ride audio, my thoughts about the ride, and I toss out a few things about Epcot as well.
Notes: I admit that I found the ride quite enjoyable. It was cute and clever and it represented Frozen really well. But, I honestly don't think the fictional world of Arendale fits into the real world of Norway.
Overview: After my food and wine day, I stayed for another day and park hopped. Come along as I talk about what I did, and make some observations.
Notes: Yeah, I caught the clarification that the $5 fee applies to packages coming from outside the resort. That was not clear in the original announcement. Also, I don't mention the Cabanas that are for rent at a hefty $700 in the theme parks - but I'll note it here: stupidest. idea. ever. I don't care if someone is willing to pay it. Its just dumb.
Overview: I went up to the last day of the Food and Wine Festival, so naturally, I have to tell a couple of stories about the day. Also, to celebrate good food, I went into the California Grill to grab a bite to eat
Notes: Food and Wine is always a great event, and I haven't missed it in many years. The downside is that it is quite a bit more crowded and that crowd can get a little rowdy as more wine is consumed. But there are tricks, like going early and leaving the park around dinner tine as the crowds swell. You can definitely make it suit your personal style.
Overview: Joining me on today's podcast is friend of the show Gary Miceli. We are talking all about Disney movies, and share some of our favorites. Come and take a listen as we discuss the history of movies and how Disney continues to churn out memorable films.
Notes: If you are lucky enough to one day be able to get a peek behind the shelving over in the shop that sits at the exit of the Mickey & Minnie meet-and-greet, you can see a remarkable mural. This was at the entrance to The Walt Disney Story, and included drawings of every animated character through the mid 1980s.
Overview: Today, I look at emergency preparedness at the Orlando Theme Park, and how ready Disney World was for Hurricane Matthew. I think overall it was well handled, but there are a few tweaks they could make in the future
Notes: Global Climate Change seems to be bringing more - and bigger - storms along the coast of Florida, so Disney World has to have good plans in place to be ready. Notes: The France Pavilion represents what we think of as the romantic city of Paris in the Springtime. Its a wonderful tribute to the city of Lights, with its architecture and the Eiffel Tower.

From the time that Walt Disney opened DisneyLand right up through today, US Presidents have been known to visit DisneyLand and Disney World. Starting with Truman, every one of them - except one - has visited a park, and the one still had a connection to Walt himself. A few of the Presidents past had strong ties and shared the love of the parks. I tell you about each one, and mix in some of the Voices of Liberty for you to enjoy.
Notes: Just in time for the 4th of July, its a long form piece about all of the Presidents. When I decided to create this podcast, I was pretty sure most had visited the parks, but it was fun to explore their stories and understand their passion and what they liked about visiting. I wasn't exactly surprised about LBJ, but was glad there was a connection in any case.
The Nixon story was probably the most intriguing because he was friendly with Disney. Reagan is a close second, based on his path crossing Disney's many times. The one that surprised me the most was Carter, and his wanting to know more about EPCOT.

Today's podcast celebrates a milestone - its my 250th show. I tell you a little about this podcast and how its created, some of the fun moments, and tell you which are my 25 most-listened to podcasts.
Notes: I would like to thank all of you for your support through my five years of doing this. Its a labor of love, but interacting with you is the biggest thing that keeps me going.
Walt Disney and Salvador Dali have an interesting connection, through some time they spent together working on a project called Destino. Its a fascinating story I wanted to share with you after learning more about it at the Dali Museum.
Notes:The Dali Museum is located in St Petersbug Florida. Its a really interesting place with a lot of original work by Dali.
I include some audio clips from the audio tour that was available at the Walt Disney Family Museum. I use them under the Fair Use Doctrine, and my intent is to hilight the relationship between the men and provide some fundamental pieces to help explain and educate.
I hope you will take some time on your next trip to central Florida to head west and visit the museum - particularly while the exhibit is ongoing. It really is quite good!

Overview: Its the 25th anniversary of DVC, and I have never really given it its due. So today's episode is all about the vacation club - I give you all the information you need - so you can make an informed decision about whether to buy into it or not.
Notes: I think the properties are beautiful, and they do a nice job of helping you make an emotional connection. But I am still not a fan, primarily because of the opportunity cost. Of course renting points from another owner is an option that is appealing and solves for that.
Overview: Today's show is a look at one of the 1964 Worlds Fair shows: Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. Come and take a listen to how this show came to be, and then hear the current audio track from Disneyland.
Notes: In this era of political uncertainty, I thought it would be good to remind everyone that we are all part of what makes this an amazing country. Lincoln served during the time when we were most divided as a nation, and his point of view is surely relevant today. I wanted to put a little spin on political discourse, while presenting a classic attraction. The timing just seemed right.
Overview: Come and take a listen as I explore the history of Walt Disney's Circlevision. There are two remaining daily shows - both at Epcot - but the history is a little surprising. Walt had a greater vision, as he often did.

Notes: I find the fact that Disney created a stereotypical view of Canada a little amusing. And the fact that it took them a fairly long time, and several requests from the Canadian government, to acknowledge it and tone down the point of view is striking. Still, the overall design is terrific, and the garden is beautiful.

Overview: The recent changes to the pricing model - particularly for a day pass - got me to thinking about how Disney has become more about the bottom line, and more like many other corporations...so I add my two cents to the discussion. The intent is to provide a point of view, not to be negative about the changes.

Notes: In the past, I have referred to the pyramid found in Mexico as the Chichinitza. While it does appear similar in style, the pyramid in Epcot's Mexico is not that. Ir is a Mesoamerican pyramid based on an Aztec design. I'll refer to it correctly from now on.
Also, the exhibit I mention that is in the entry way does change from time to time. My understanding is that it recently changed to a different part of Mexican heritage, but it was animales fantasticos when I created this podcast. Also, the Kidcot station has been in the house in the back and at times you can find it in the exhibition area.

Overview: I saw the movie again, and had some additional thoughts about it that I want to share. I have a few observations, and some of my own theories that I hope you'll enjoy hearing. This podcast is spoiler heavy! *
Notes:Consider this podcast as a bonus! I had no real intention of revising the movie, but I was amazed at the detail and wanted to share. One note: the box that contains the light saber is reported to be the same one that Obi Wan opened in Episode 4.
Overview: I went to see the new film, and I wanted to take time to review it, and talk a little Star Wars. There are spoilers in this podcast, but they appear in the second half - and I call out when they're going to start...before that, I talk about the first 6 films, and Star Wars in general.
Notes: Here's a nugget for you that I didn't mention in the podcast: after "the first" episode (i.e., IV) was filmed, Harrison Ford thought the film was not to his liking, and asked not to appear in subsequent films. After some discussion with Lucas, they agreed to kill him off in Episode V....but he had a change of heart during some of the early reads, and decided to stick it out for the 3 episodes, and was delighted to come back for Episode VII.

Overview: In October, my son and I took a trip to the Food and Wine Fest. We had a great time touring Epcot, getting passports stamped, playing Remy's Hide and Squeak, being an unpaid intern trying to help catch Doofenshmirtz, touring the festival, and of course trying the food! We talk about the experience and all that we did.

Overview: Back in 1990, I tried out to be on Let's Make a Deal, a game show that was being taped at Disney's MGM Studios. I tell the story of that long day. Of course I talk about more than just a simple story, because I love to talk.

Notes: The singer is Rhett Wheeler. As it turns out, he isn't an amateur, and this may have been partially intentional on Disney's part. Still, he says this was a “dream come true”...According to his website, Wheeler holds a Bachelor of The Arts degree from the New School University in New York City. He’s traveled the world and keeps on performing in hopes of catching his big break that could send him onto super-stardom. Good luck Rhett!

Overview: Today, I'm talking about the iconic attraction that made its debut in DisneyLand in 1967...the Pirates of the Caribbean. It truly was groundbreaking when it was created, and really does sum up what the WED designers are all about. Come and take a listen to the history, and learn about the amazing backstory.

Overview: I sat down and watched all 4 hours of the American Experience: Walt Disney, and I provide something that is part review, and part my thoughts about what I saw and heard. I find the man to be complicated and pretty interesting. As I note in the podcast, he was larger than life and that really shines through the production. But he also was very family oriented and considered people who worked for him as such - making his life as the head of a company bearing his name....complicated.

Overview: Last week at D23, Disney announced a plethora of new things come to the parks. I pick some of them to talk about and give some details and my thoughts about what's coming. Especially intriguing is the 11 acres that will be Toy Story Land, and the 14 acres that will be Star Wars Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios, which for now retains that name.
Notes: I am amazed at just how much Disney is investing in these upgrades and enhancements. Its a large sum, but could really make the parks amazing .
On the map at the top, I have oriented it so the entrance is on the top left; Fantasmic will be all the way at the left. The area outlined at the top is where I think Star Wars Land will net out, and at the bottom is how I think they'll orient Toy Story Land.
Overview: Epcot has a plethora of restaurants. So many that its often hard to decide where to eat, let alone what's best. But don't worry, I have you covered. Here are my top 20 restaurants - in order! Sure the list is somewhat subjective, but I give you a sense of what its like and what there is to eat at that location. Hopefully, it will inspire you to try new places and create your own list!

Overview: This podcast is a tribute to the Germany pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, theming, and talk about the model train. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. And finally I discuss a planned attraction that was planned, but never built. Notes: Germany feels almost incomplete as a pavilion. While it is interesting, there isn't as much to do there as one might hope. Still, its great to explore what's there, and the details are remarkable.

Overview:We've been hearing that Disney is planning to spend around $3 billion on its US theme parks, with much of it going to Disney World. Today, I do a little imaginating, and think about what that might mean. Its time to dream and consider the possibilities. That. Is. A lot. of Money.

Notes:The person whose name I couldn't think of was James Arnold Taylor, voice of Obi Wan in the Clone Wars animated TV show. I noted that typically the guests aren't that interesting, but I will make an exception for the last weekend (this coming one) as Frank Oz is one of the celebrity guests. Oz, of course, worked with Jim Henson on the muppets, and has a more interesting story. Unfortunately, my schedule didn't work for coming up for weekend #5.

Overview: Today, I explore the history of EPCOT in general, and the rationale for the World Showcase portion of the park. Walt Disney had something specific in mind, and we didn't get that, but we did get an entertaining place that has a richness to it. Here's to a little history!
Notes:Its difficult to imagine what Walt's vision was, precisely, so we mainly have to guess at it. The view of Progress City that you can see from the PeopleMover is about 1/3 of the full model. The whole thing took up about 1,500 square feet - that's close the size of a smaller home!

Overview: I present to you my top 10 Quick Service Meals. I tell you what dish I like, and where you can get it. Of course, I sprinkle in a few helpful tips, and make some suggestions on how to get there and where you might eat the food.
Notes: There is no place I love in the Magic Kingdom. But, there are spots in both the Polynesian and Contemporary that are nearby. I have favorites in each of the other theme parks, and 4 other resorts. I have a breakfast, two vegetarian dishes, three that come from the sea, some chicken, pork, and lamb.
Overview: Today's podcast is another look at the monorail. Disney is testing some changes to the monorail, so I wonder what's up with that? I look back at the history of the monorail, and suggest what this means as it relates to wait times. And, at the end of the podcast, I have some thoughts about Measles at DisneyLand.
Notes: I wanted to point out that no the vaccination part of the podcast, it is not my intention to wade into the minefield that has sprung up around this topic. Rather, I am thinking about the greater good and the science of it.

Overview: This podcast takes a look at what came after Mission to Mars closed in the Magic Kingdom. In short, it was a creative thrill ride that didn't provide physical thrills, but rather psychological ones. Seize the future with XS!
Notes: Michael Eisner asked for it to be more terrifying along the way. And the Imagineers had to work with the existing building, and most of the set designs in order to keep costs down. Arguably, this is one of the most non-Disney attractions ever put in to the Magic Kingdom.
Its more Disney news, kind of.... I take a look at changes that have come and are coming to the world. In particular I look at Frozen taking over the Maelstrom.

We heard the sad news that Robin Williams has died of an apparent suicide. Robin had a long history with Disney, so I thought I would pay tribute by counting down the top 5 appearances in movies and the theme park. This podcast is over the usual time, but it seemed worthwhile given his wit - and contributions.
After Flight to the Moon, Disney closed the attraction and re-opened it as Mission to Mars. Today, we pay tribute to that attraction.
I look back to original DisneyLand attraction: Flight to the Moon, which took guests on a rocket to the Moon and back.
Its a full dose of .... well, news isn't quite right. I have a load of rumors and random thoughts mixed in with some news items. Star Wars Land, updates on the monorail, Frozen craziness, and loads more. And maybe even a few opinions for good measure.
Back on March 31st, after 12 years running, Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade had its last run. Here's a look back at the parade...I decided to put this podcast out now simply because the World Cup is going on now, and there's a connection to the host country Brazil.
One thing I wanted to point out is that I mention in the podcast that the music in the parade is a combination of African and Caribbean music. That's true, but doesn't tell the full story. Brazil happens to have a strong African influence, so selecting Mas Que Nada as part of the music in the Jammin' Jungle parade makes a lot of sense, and fits in with the theme of the parade.
After the World of Motion came the idea to take guests through the "proving grounds" .... and that became Test Track. Guests experienced the testing that a car goes through, culminating with high-speed trip outside of the building. Later, this became more of a branded product with Test Track 2.0.
I'll be honest with you: I don't care much for it. Sure, its clever, but its missing some of the hallmarks of a great Disney attraction, and the aesthetics are overlooked, with the "wheel" that was the building now being overtaken by the track on the outside...
This episode is a look at the Transcenter, which was the exit area of the World of Motion. There were some cool, interactive (and fun) exhibits, and I talk about them and play some audio for you. Enjoy!

I took a trip last week up to WDW, and got to experience FastPass+ first-hand. We were staying off-property, so I had to book my choices at a kiosk on the "day of"...
What did I think? Overall, I didn't like it - but the cast members really did make the difference in creating an "okay" experience (as opposed to a negative one).
And to be fair, it was still an enjoyable trip, and we did get to do nearly everything we wanted to - I just thought it did nothing to enhance my visit...and frankly it was kind of a pain to work with.

Today's podcast is a movies review of... Saving Mr. Banks. Short version: I loved this film! I hope you did too. My lone problem with it was that it was a slightly Disney-ised and revised look at the history. It didn't quite work out this way, and I fill in the proverbial blanks on that. Still, it was great, and I can only imagine what it was like to work for the Walt Disney studios at that time.
Now I do have a couple of other Disney movies that I mention on this podcast (I was busy catching up over the last few weeks!).
Today, I have still more information on MyMagic+. There's some new news, and a few updates….there is (as we expected) an active and passive RFID reader, and there isa requirement to have a biometric scan for park entrance. Meanwhile, old paper-based FastPass machines are being removed, and there are some increasing costs.

I personally love learning more about the history of Walt Disney World, and am fascinated by some of the things that happened to make the park we know and love.

I went up to the parks at the end of October, and had a chance to check out some of what's going on with MyMagic, so I talk about that. Plus, I went over to Epcot and ate some yummy food at the Food & Wine Festial. And there are a few other fun things to talk about!

On today's show, I hop onto the monorail at WDW that is heading from the Transportation and Ticket Center (or TTC as they call it in Disney 'code') and head over to Epcot. Then, I make the return trip. Come along and take a listen, and enjoy the ride!
Remember that Disney World has three monorail loops: the Epcot loop, the Resort Loop (which you can hear in my last podcast), and the Express Monorail (which everyone knows so well when they head into the Magic Kingdom, and then back to their car).
All three originate from the TTC, and make their way around to their destinations.

A couple of thoughts: I don't really like the new narration. Its not as interesting and the host isn't as personable. He sounds almost mechanical in nature. And - I talk about the renovations that were recently unveiled at the Contemporary....at the time I recorded this, the new "Top of the World" as it used to be called was still under construction.

The order of parks for me was Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, and the Studios. The rationale was to catch Soarin' early in the day - and to end at the Studios for Hyperspace Hoopla (it was Star Wars Weekend). And I wanted to catch lunch at the Flame Tree, so that worked out pretty well.

Its really about how, IMHO, they miss the mark in some way. For some of them, its the way they use their space, for some its the food, and for a few the "experience" is great but its off for some reason.
Now I know that - probably - no one will agree with my list in its entirety, and I'm sure some will think I left off a restaurant. But I wanted to throw out my list and get the conversation started.

Today, I present the audio from the Hall of Presidents, as it existed from 1971-1993. It is narrated by Lawrence Dobkin, and provides an interesting - and very Walt like - view back into the history of our great country. If its your first time hearing it, see if you don't learn something. And if you remember it from the past, see if there are moments that seem to be part of our collective consciousness, and our understanding of history. This version is ca 1973, and the last president listed in Nixon.
The only things that changed in the show over the next 20 years were the addition of the next president, and the battle hymn at the end in the 80s. Otherwise, the show remained the same.
Something interesting I noticed as I listened to this audio was that some of my recollections about historical facts were based on this show - rather than something I learned in a school room. I won't comment on whether that's good or bad, but it does show the power of the presentation
In honor of the Presidential election, today's episode is a retrospective on the Hall of Presidents. I take a look back at the history of the attraction, and how it came to be - and why. Its an interesting look back into Walt's personal history and into the history of Disney World.

Disney-MGM Studios guests can be part of the show as lucky audience members will be chosen to play small parts in each performance of "Disney's Doug Live!"

I've been doing this for a while now, and one thing that's missing is a bit of a social conscience. I figure we all should do some good for others, and that's what I aim to do.
Now I know this is not my greatest work. Believe me when I say I had a lot of trouble deciding on an approach for this podcast. But I believe that what it lacks in overall production quality is offset by its purpose.
You see, I have a friend who has a child diagnosed with autism. He wanted to take a trip to Disney, and relying on everything I know about Disney I pronounced "I believe Disney will take great care with you, and you'll have a great time!"
But it turns out that he had other information from people in his circle: Disney is NOT (gasp!) that great at making accommodations for children with autism and (double gasp!) Universal does it better.
Say it isn't so!
So, he decided to bring his other child down to investigate and visit both and determine what his son can handle and how both parks deal with issues.
And so I took him around the Magic Kingdom, and we had a ball.
But I became more acutely aware of what he was saying...and decided that my social conscience would be directed at raising awareness and supporting an organization called "Autism Speaks"....you can find a link to the site on this page, and on disneypodcast.net
What I would like to do over time is to hilight the cause from time to time, and if anyone has some experience in this area, please feel free to comment or send me an email.
I'm not sure where I want to go with this, exactly, but I just feel like it should go somewhere.

Today, I explore the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. First, I provide some background on the attraction - how did it come to be? What's the back story? And then, come along and take a walk through the outside and queue of the attraction, followed by a ride on it. Its a little love to an attraction that most people run to for the thrill aspect. But the story is actually pretty interesting.

Now I will admit, I didn't love this. I liked it, but I didn't feel like it was enough - since you stand on a pad and wave a card and get sent to the next destination. While the animation is great and its entertaining, I just found that it wasn't as interactive as I would like, and it took away from other things I wanted to do. I have more fun looking for Hidden Mickeys!!
But if you want to spend a little of your trip checking it out, its worth admiring the technology and the animation! And you can always stop at any point and pick it up later - or another day or even another trip!

Surprise in the skies:
Tinkerbell:
My Disney-style popcorn:
2 Tbsp canola, 1 Tbsp coconut oil
1/3 cup of high quality popcorn kernels
1 3-quart covered saucepan
Flavacol or similar
- Heat the oil in a 3-quart saucepan on medium high heat.
- Put a few popcorn kernels into the oil and cover the pan.
- When the kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels in an even layer. Cover, remove from heat and count 30 seconds.
- Return the pan to the heat. The popcorn should begin popping soon, and all at once. Once the popping starts in earnest, gently shake the pan by moving it back and forth over the burner. If you keep the lid slightly ajar to let the steam from the popcorn release, the popcorn will be cripser.
- Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove the pan from the heat, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn immediately into a wide bowl.
- Add Flavacol (you want to lightly coat all kernels)

This episode is fairly simple: I take a ride on the WDW railroad, then hang out in the evening. Check out some of The Main Street Electrical Parade, and hear some thoughts and comments as I wander the park.
Walter Cronkite's relationship with Disney and Disney World is not really that deep. Aside from appearing as the host of Epcot, and narrating Space Ship Earth, his other two notable contributions were the introduction to animation at the Studios, and appearing as the host of Holiday Illuminations. But he did appear in a few TV specials where he talked about his love of Disney
The second host of SpaceShip Earth is the one most people remember as being the voice of the attraction - and really the voice of Epcot. Of course, he's uncle Walter - Walter Cronkite. Respected as a journalist, Cronkite adds a certain authority to the audio. On this show, its Walter's narration of SpaceShip Earth.
His voice could be heard from 1986-1995, but to me he will always be the voice of the attraction. This was certainly the version I enjoyed the most.
This podcast is a look back at the history, design, and construction of Epcot's signature icon. I talk about what it took to make a complete dome, and how they did it. I start off with the history of domes, then discuss some the engineering, math, and science that makes it work. And then move to the show itself and that attention to detail. Its pretty thorough except for one simple thing that I failed to mention: green lanyards on CastMembers means they trade only with children.
I also delve into what you might trade, different types of pins that are available to trade, and even where you might get some pins a little cheaper to get you started.
Its a fun activity that really doesn't cost much and is easy to get home.
As for me, I don't trade, but I do have a couple of pins, including the 5-legged goat that appears on the mural in the Contemporary.

This the story about the Country Bears, and in particular the Holiday Hoedown show. I give some insights into the attraction, and play the audio for you.
The show ran from 1984 until about 2000, and was a bit of fun. The entire building was redecorated, and the bears were wearing holiday costumes. And the script and songs were different.
It was kind of fun to get into the holiday spirit. For me personally, it was always fun to try and time a visit so I could catch the show, since it had a limited run.
Back in 1992, when I was a CastMember, I had the pleasure of working over the holidays. This podcast is a story about that time, and in particular my experience on New Year's eve. It was a really fun time, and I still remember it fondly - so I thought I'd share the story.

Because we are getting close to Halloween, I wanted to talk about one of my favorite attractions in the Magic Kingdom: the Haunted Mansion. Over the summer, the family took a trip to Disney - simply to enjoy the water parks. I talk about both of the parks, and tell some stories about our trip.
One of the coolest things has to be the view from the top of Teamboat Springs - from there you can see all 4 of Disney's Theme Parks.
The water parks are a hoot, and I highly recommend visiting them.
On this episode, I focus on DisneyLand with the help of a guest - Shelby who is your blog host on http://myyearwiththemouse.com. She is a frequent guest to the park (and lives the dream of being so close she can see the fireworks from her kitchen!) and fellow Disney fan.

For the millennium celebration, Disney rolled out the Tapestry of Nations parade, or more aptly show. It was a larger-than-life exhibit with giant puppets (made by the same guy who did the puppets for the Lion King on Broadway), and rotating drums.
It went on for about 4 years, before it faded off. The musical score was beautiful, and I share it and a little history with you on this podcast.
I'll be honest and say this was one of my favorite productions ever, and I miss it.

I have seen Weird Al perform many times at the parks. There was Grad Nite for me, and I saw several of his shows that evening. And then there was a night out at Pleasure Island where it was a giant sing-along; he did costume changes and had a really fun show.
I explore his history with the parks - though he is just a fan as I am. Also I play a clip from his song "Skipper Dan" which is a fun parody of the Jungle Cruise skippers.

After Mickey's 60th birthday was over, Disney decided to re-theme Mickey's Birthdayland as Mickey's Starland. And later, it became Mickey's ToonTown Fair. I explore the changes that were made, and how the land evolved over time to become what we saw before it closed.
With the removal of ToonTown, I wanted to pay tribute to the original idea and how it came about. Mickey's Birthdayland was created to celebrate Mickey's 60th birthday and was only supposed to be be temporary. But it was fairly popular, and Disney realized that guests wanted to meet Mickey, and so expanded on the idea. I talk about this new land, and what it was all about. Please feel free to add your

The denouement. As I visited the last time, I had some thoughts about some of the goods and relative bads of Disney World. I share a number of those thoughts with you. But - I still love Disney, so I make every effort to tell you why and what Disney does to counter those bads.

In this episode, I finish my thoughts about being a CM by telling a couple of fun stories and wondering what-if? What if I had stayed?
The what-if scenario plays out in my mind all the time. Sure I have no regrets, but everyone asks themselves this regularly day, don't they? What if I had done something differently?
I talk briefly about my decision to leave, and the reasons for it. Naturally (as most men will tell you is the case when there's a "life altering" decision to be made) there was a woman involved. Whether I was right or wrong at the time is irrelevant. It was complicated, and I had to move on. Enough said.
It was a most interesting time in my life, and I'll never forget it, and always treasure it.

I had a blast talking with Hoot. He told me some GREAT stories about his time jumping off the attraction in order to document it completely.
He's a witty guy, and this was one of the more fun interviews I've ever done.

I visited Walt Disney World in late October as part of my annual tradition of enjoying the Food and Wine Festival. This time, I went at it alone, but made new friends as I went to various booths. And since I was there, I visited all the parks to check out construction activities, see what was new, and to of course ride a few favorite attractions.

In 1993, Nestle took over as the title sponsor for The Land. One of the changes they made was to close The Kitchen Kabaret, ending the run of veggie, veggie, fruit, fruit. In March of 1994, Food Rocks was opened in its place. While it was similar in nature - food singing about good nutrition - it was quite a different show.
After a renovation, Symbiosis was unfortunately closed. Opened in its place was The Circle of Life: an Environmental Fable. This show stretched the nature of The Land to now talk about conservation through the lens of our friends from the Lion King.
Within the Land pavilion was a remarkable move called Symbiosis that celebrated man's creative partnership with the land. It included marvels of past and present technologies and accomplishments. I talk about this film, and what it was all about.
The Land is another of Epcot’s opening day pavilions in future world. The objective was to look at the earth, agriculture, and ecology. I’m the original design, the large atrium would have been an arboretum. It featured a large mosaic, a pretty amazing film, a boat ride, and a show about food.

The Universe of Energy was an original Epcot opening day pavilion that (as you might expect) devoted itself to energy, starting with an overview, talking about fossil fuels, and then moved on to renewable resources. It was one of Disney’s longest (time wise) rides, lasting around 45 minutes. I talk you through the history and we go on a ride through the attraction.

Today's podcast is a look at the relationship between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney, and a project called Destino. They had a friendship that lasted many years, and found qualities to admire in each other. The project was not finished in their lifetime, but was completed in 2003. Note: there are some clips from the Disney Family museum exhibit that are included here; they are intended to provide some insights into the story and are included under Fair Use.

In October, my son and I took a trip to the Food and Wine Fest. We had a great time touring Epcot, getting passports stamped, playing Remy's Hide and Squeak, being an unpaid intern trying to help catch Doofenshmirtz, touring the festival, and of course trying the food! We talk about the experience and all that we did.
Back in 1990, I tried out to be on Let's Make a Deal, a game show that was being taped at Disney's MGM Studios. I tell the story of that long day. Of course I talk about more than just a simple story, because I love to talk.
