Mutant wolves that roam the human-free Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have developed cancer-resilient genomes, that could well be key to helping humans fight the deadly disease. The wild animals have managed to adapt & survive the high levels of radiation that have plagued the area after a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl power plant exploded in 1986, in the world’s worst nuclear accident. Humans left the area after the explosion leaked cancer-causing radiation into the environment & a 1,000-square-mile zone was abandoned to prevent further human exposure. In the nearly 38 years since the nuclear disaster, wildlife has returned to the area, including packs of wolves that seem to be unaffected by the chronic exposure to the radiation.

The number of transistors on a microchip has doubled every year since the 1960s. But will soon plateau because silicon, loses its electrical properties once devices made from this material dip below a certain size. 2D materials two-dimensional sheets of perfect crystals can be as thin as a single atom. At the scale of nanometers, 2D materials can conduct electrons far more efficiently than silicon. The search for next-generation transistor materials therefore has focused on 2D materials, as potential successors to silicon.

The world is short of everything: corn, coffee, wheat, soybeans, plastic cardboard, semiconductor chips, appropriately skilled workers, and so on. On today’s recap, Marcello goes over the aftermath of the Fed’s interest rate increases that have occurred throughout the year in order to control inflation. Despite all the efforts made by the government, 2022 is looking to be the worst year for the economy since 1871.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is committed to a historic tightening monetary path, with interest rate hikes at the most rapid pace since the early 1980’s. But as the domestic economy grinds to a halt & inflation likely cools, as government spending increases slip, a growing number of economists expect the Fed to be forced to cut interest rates in 2023.
There is increasing evidence that China’s economy will be unable to overtake the GDP of the U.S. The Chinese rate of growth is slowing, the real estate sector in China is in serious trouble & the Chinese labor force is shrinking, due to a rapidly aging population & declining birthrate. This year’s holiday retail sales growth however, is less than the +8.5% increase in 2021, as decades-high inflation, rising interest rates & the threat of a recession have made consumers more cautious.
