In episode 34 we join Nick Pittsinger, AKA Varien. Get a glimpse inside the mind of Varien as he shares his thought process for inspiration and walks us through the making of ‘GunMetal Black’, which was a hugely successful release he made on the MonsterCat label.
In this podcast, you’ll discover:
Who is Varien?
If you’re unfamiliar with Varien’s music, I suggest you check it out as soon as you can. Varien is one of those few artists who is able to truly take you to another world with his music. He draws upon inspiration from imaginary characters and stories that he writes his compositions around.
Nick is based out of Tampa, Florida, where he grew up. He has always been deeply involved with music and is a classically trained pianist. He has played in bands and can play guitar, which he still does as a producer of electronic music, combining his electronic productions with recordings of his guitar playing, which he then imports into his DAW to rearrange and process.
You can actually hear some of his guitar playing in the track GunMetal Black, which he walks us through in this podcast episode.

About Erb N Dub
It’s not in Erb N Dub’s nature to just crossfade robotically between the biggest tracks of the day. Anyone who’s caught one of his scratch-laden four-deck sets of dancefloor destruction knows this only too well.
Whatever facet of the craft you look at, whether it’s crate-digging, mixing, scratching, juggling or straight party-hyping, he’s constantly looking to take his skills to ever higher levels. Which is one reason why his UKF podcast smashed download records, and he’s regularly to be found behind the decks across Europe and North America as well as his native UK.
And, since 2007 he’s been releasing a slew of weighty tracks on labels like Playaz, Technique and many more.
He’s been a remixer of choice for a string of artists including Foreign Beggars, Freestylers and Krafty Kuts. His tunes are consistently blowing up raves and airwaves worldwide, with support from Andy C, Hype, Crissy Criss, Grooverider and Drumsound and Bassline Smith to name just a few.
Erb N Dub also takes the time to prove his musical credentials in other ways. He’s been honing his craft as a drummer since his schooldays, and now you can catch him as part of the new live act Wicked City, alongside Krafty Kuts and Dynamite MC.
Not only that, but 2013 saw him build, from scratch, his 20 20 studio complex in Kent. With such deep immersion in music, no wonder Yamaha chose him for a prestigious endorsement.

The awe-inspiring trio Audeka comprises of Skyler Gerdeman and brothers Marty and Max Cepeda. In this exclusive Audeka interview with BassGorilla.com, they sit down with us to walk us through the making of their track ‘Savage’ from their ‘Mythical Creatures’ EP (out on Caliber Music).
The boys also share a ton of their secrets on music production workflow, with lots of useful tips on sound design and the mix down process in this exclusive interview with BassGorilla.
The artwork from their mind-blowing ‘Mythical Creatures’ EP shows their studio owl, who ‘watches over the studio when they aren’t around’ (in their own words). The EP has a truly unique feel to it, taking you on a medieval-inspired journey of elves, wizards, goblins, dungeons and dragons, in a way that has never been done before in electronic music (to my knowledge). If you think I sound crazy, listen to the EP and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Italian drum and bass & dubstep pioneer AEPH (Simone Vallecorsa) gives us the lowdown on how he created his killer track ETV, from his ‘Enter The Vision’ EP, out on Lifted Music.
If you’re into Drum and Bass, there’s a very high chance you’ve heard at least one of AEPH’s incredible tracks. He has developed his own signature sound over the last several years, taking influences from various futuristic sci-fi films like Tron, The Matrix, etc.
It comes as no surprise to learn that he composes music for TV advertising and film companies. In fact, you may have heard his music in television commercials like this one:
His distinct sound is not only inspiring to listen to for other music producers, but it is the kind of music that other producers marvel at, when they focus on AEPH’s sound design, composing and mix down skills.
That’s the main reason why it was such a pleasure to record this podcast with him, and we truly appreciate his willingness to share his knowledge and expertise with everyone in the BassGorilla community.
In this episode, you’ll discover AEPH’s unique approaches to sound design in Native Instruments Massive, Kontakt and other plug-ins. This episode is also packed full of great tips on mixing audio, as he talks us through how he made this amazing track. This episode is a must-hear for those wanting to know how to make drum and bass and dubstep.
