During the vicars' summer break, Bishop Daly is inviting guests on the show to discuss important matters in the life of the Church. For this episode, Bishop Daly, with the help of guest co-host Hilary Hammett, sits down again with an old friend from San Jose, Father Gary Thomas.
Fr. Thomas is a priest and exorcist of the Diocese of San Jose. He received his training as an exorcist in Rome and offers consultations with other dioceses on the topic of exorcism. While in Rome studying, Fr. Thomas met journalist Matt Baglio, who evenutally wrote a book about Fr. Thomas' training. The Rite: Making of a Modern Exorcist, Baglio's book about Fr. Thomas' training as an exorcist, was later adapted into a movie, The Rite, starring Anthony Hopkins.
Fr. Thomas also appeared on two episodes of the Bishop and the Vicars in the summer of 2017 to speak about exorcism and its role in the Church.

This episode, Bishop Daly welcomes back to the show local author Marja Henderson. Marja has recently published a book entitled Long Shall You Live.
"Long Shall You Live is a memoir following the lives of a young couple, Mienus and Suze, during the Nazi occupation of Holland during WWII. It traces Mienus’ involvement in the Dutch resistance in Vlaardingen and Rotterdam as a young patriot, and his subsequent struggle to survive the horrors of Buchenwald concentration camp. This story shares the love and the faith of these first generation survivors following their liberation, and the challenges they faced immigrating to the United States. The book continues with the personal story of the author’s life as a second generation survivor, and the fulfillment of the commitment she made to her parents “never to forget and never let it happen again."

This week on Bishop and The Vicars Radio Show, the idea of human dignity is the topic of discussion. In today's society, our understanding of anthropology has been increasingly unmoored from objective standards. The human person is whatever he or she wants to be. In the last episode, Father Connall quoted from the Supreme Court's 1993 decision in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, "At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life," is a sort of modern "non serviam." The defiant cry of Satan to God, "I will not serve." Opposed to this relativistic understanding of the human person is the Catholic concept of human dignity. In light of so many school shootings, and with the increasing division in our own society, we need the revolutionary understanding of the human person that is brought to light by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Its a contest of Hallmark vs the Church this Ash Wednesday, as Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday. As the Bishop and the Vicars note Ash Wednesday is in many ways a celebration of love and forgiveness. We can turn towards one another and offer both contrition and forgiveness in this Lenten season. While we must abstain from meat and fast this February 14th; Ash Wednesday and the love we celebrate on Valentines are not opposed. Ash Wednesday and Lent invites us to go deeper into the meaning of love; to the eternal Love of God, and to the Ressurection of Christ at Easter.

Fr. Thomas is the official exorcist of the Diocese of San Jose, he has served in that role since 2005 after being sent to Rome by the Bishop of San Jose to attend classes on the Rite of Exorcism. While in Rome studying Fr. Thomas met a journalist, Matt Baglio, who asked Fr. Thomas if he could write a book about his training as an exorcist. That book, The Rite: Making of a Modern Exorcist, was later adapted into a movie, The Rite,staring Anthony Hopkins.
Fr. Thomas shares his experience with Bishop Daly, as well as the history and theology of exorcism.
