These are some of the main questions we will try to find answers to in this new episode of My Fashion Stories Box Podcast.
Together we will travel back in time to:
- Understand how past civilisations used clothing and accessories to give information on genders;
- Determine when a clear gender differentiation between men and women appeared and how it was translated through clothing and appearance;
- See the evolution of gender identification through clothes over the time.
And, as this question relates closely to gender definition and perception, we will also look at its evolution in past societies and consequences on how men and women would dress.

These past months news have been filled with articles on projects of laws, regulations aiming at limiting the consumption of fast fashion items, in the objective to counterbalance their negative impacts on the environment and the acceleration of the climate change crisis. This tendency gave me the will to investigate the past to see if this process of consumption control was specific to our modern society or if, on the contrary, there have already been examples of laws, edicts supervising the access as well as the consumption of goods linked with looks and appearance.
In this new episode of My Fashion Stories Box Podcast :
- We will travel back in time to the first antique civilisations in the look for the first occurrences of sumptuary laws ;
- We will take a look at the practices in Europe during the Middle Ages on that matter and their impacts on the social hierarchy of these times ;

Welcome to My Fashion Stories Box Podcast’s Season 4! Starting from now on, the episodes will be available in English and in French. To start this new cycle, we will talk about the local Touraine headdress. I, myself, was born in the city of Tours and my family has been living in the Touraine region for some generations, and it became an evidence for me to dedicate some times researching this fashion item. To share the first results of my researches dedicated to the origins of this headpiece, I organized on November 24 2023 a conference followed by an exhibition, entitled “The Touraine headdresses – To the origins” in partnership with the association “Histoire et Patrimoine de Saint-Christophe-sur-le-Nais”.

September is usually associated with going back to school for students around the world, after a long summer break. And the clothes they are going to put on for this event is a source of intensive researches in style for students. Just look at the Back to school actions and collections brands launch starting almost beginning of August each year… It becomes almost a school uniform even if, at least in France, school uniforms are not really a thing. It wasn’t always the case and it’s not the case in other countries.

After an intensive course I took this Summer on lace, I got curious about it and decided to dig in a bit deeper.

- What were the first usages of lace and how it became synonymous of luxury and still is one of the main features used by fashion houses?
Together, we will dive in two beautiful legends surrounding the birth of lace. We will read abstracts from the study book of young Anna, a 14-year old girl who was learning the beautiful art of lace in the French city of Méteren in 1924. And I will, of course, share my own experience of learning lace with Soline from the art atelier Soline Du Puy in Villandry, France, in the region of the castles of the Loire.

In today’s episode, I will review the book “Miss Dior: A story of Courage and Couture” by Justine Picardie, which was published end of 2021 and is available in French and English. Through the story of Catherine Dior, the sister of the famous designer Christian Dior, the author paints the picture of the French society just before the Second World War started, the dark period of the collaboration and the partition of the French territory into the free zone and the occupied zone and the relations and roles the fashion industry played during the war and after, during the reconstruction years.
In today’s episode I will speak about a period in time that is particularly dear to me for many reasons: the Roaring 20s. The Magnificent Roaring 20s, the decadent decade which followed the 1st World War and the “Der des Der” (the Last of the Last) as we used to say in French.
In this episode I will cover a movement, the Art Deco movement and its influence, among other, on fashion. I will talk about the various historical inspirations designers had. I will do an anatomy of Art Deco fashion with a focus on women’s fashion, for daily wear, evening wear, casual occasions and accessories. And, of course, I will speak about the major fashion designers who influenced and revolutionized the way women would dress.
