Good News Stories: Recent Episodes

TWU Student Ministries

The Bible is a collection of stories. It is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. As we study the Bible and listen to the Holy Spirit, we begin appreciating the thorns and thistles, the triumphs and enjoyments of those who have gone before. But we also have a lot to learn from one another, for in the end, Christians are victorious "by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony" (Revelation 12:11).

Hosted by Rev. James Ellis III, Trinity Western University's University Chaplain and Director of Student Ministries, this podcast is an opportunity to get to know students, faculty, staff, and others a bit more up-close, to hear wisdom about relationships, spiritual formation, vocational discernment – you name it.

We think that these stories are important insomuch as they point to the "good news" Jesus represents. We are who we are only because he bought us at a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), living and dying, and being resurrected by God the Father for our sake!

So, do yourself a favor and listen and then tell a friend to listen. After all, who doesn't like a good story?

In this episode, The Rev. has a conversation with Karen Stiller and, wouldn’t you know it (surprise, surprise), his wife, Renata, about their shared experiences being married to pastors. Karen is an accomplished writer, senior editor of Faith Today, and the author of The Minister’s Wife: A Memoir of Faith, Doubt, Friendship, Loneliness, Forgiveness, and More. And she loves to laugh. In Renata’s former career, she worked in the trenches of urban education (earning two master’s degrees along the way), as a Special Education teacher and administrator. She is passionate about authentic Christian community, discipling young women, and ice cream! Oh, and she also loves to laugh.

Being married to a pastor is challenging for lots of reasons. It can be isolating, riddled with inequity, unstable, and draining. But there is another side, as well. Holy moments are experienced, and holy relationships of mutuality and accountability can be built, like what we see between Renata and Karen. What a joy it is when pastor’s wives find listening ears and sisters-in-Christ to share life with.

The newly married Cheryl Dennis (formerly Welfing) is the Project Lead for Trinity Western University’s Campus Services team and loves all manner of buildings, seeing them grow from a concept to something tangible and able to positively impact people’s lives. She has been part of the TWU community for four years, two in the CFO’s office and two within Campus Services. Given the massive RGK building project that is currently in its final phases, she spends most of her time on that right now, and she is excited to see it take shape and finally be put to good use. Cheryl graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley with a bachelor’s degree in political science and is excited about the master’s degree program she is in at TWU.

She is a big fan of long walks, relaxing at home watching Netflix, and most especially spending time with her husband, Kyle. They met in May of 2020 (yes, in the middle of the pandemic!), were engaged by March and then were married in October of 2021. She is happy to receive any belated wedding gifts anyone wants to send their way!

John Elmore is the Senior Director of Pastoral Care and re:generation at Watermark Community Church's Dallas campus. Through re:gen, he journeys with people trying to move forward from the pain of their past into new life and peace through Jesus Christ! As a recovering alcoholic now fifteen years sober, John knows firsthand the wreckage that comes with living a life disconnected from God and isolated from His people. But much more than that, he now knows Jesus’ promise of a new, full, abundant, cruciform life. It is better than we ever dreamed life could be and now it's his life purpose to "point people to the Healer, Redeemer, Creator and Deliverer.” He says, “I’m just one beggar telling another where to get the Bread." (John 6:35).

Earlier in 2021, John released the book, Freedom Starts Today: Overcoming Struggles and Addictions One Day at a Time (Baker). He says, “I decided to write the book I needed when I was zero days sober.” But this is not a book you read, it’s a book you do; it’s a ten-minute-a-day for 90 days path to healing and freedom from struggles or addiction by the power of the Holy Spirit alongside another believer.

John is happily married to his wife and best friend, Laura. Together they have three kids (boy, girl, boy) and have been blown away by how God is using their little ones to teach us about the depth of love the Father has for us and how to daily die to self. (Galatians 2.20)

Karen Stiller has been a writer for a milestone of 25 years with publications featured in The Walrus, Reader's Digest, Faith Today, and In Trust. She is a senior editor of Faith Today (Canada's Christian magazine) and host of the Faith Today podcast. Karen's writing usually has to do with the intersections between faith and the world, social issues, and matters of justice. Those interests have led her to refugee camps in South Sudan and Uganda, and opportunities in community development projects places like Senegal and Cambodia.

As you'll hear in the episode, Karen is a big believer in doing what scares you almost to death! And so, every now and again, she tries to put herself into situations that give her a jolt of sheer terror (which she can only get through with the grace of God). Some of those experiences resulted in her spiritual memoir, The Minister’s Wife: a memoir of faith, doubt, friendship, loneliness, forgiveness and more.

Today, Karen lives in Ottawa with her husband, Brent, who is an Anglican priest. Together, they have three adult children and a dog named Dewey. Take a listen.

Today we're with Jen Pollock Michel, an award-winning author of titles including Surprised by Paradox, Teach Us to Want,Keeping Place, and her latest release,A Habit Called Faith. An American living in Toronto, Jen is a wife and mother of five. She is the lead editor for Imprint magazine, published by The Grace Centre for the Arts, and host of the Englewood Review of Books podcast.

In her private and public life, Jen has been intentional to create space for herself and others to lean into unanswered questions and complex emotions. She says, "[it has] always been the stories of Scripture that have interested me most: of Abraham and his doubt; of Hannah and her grief; of David and his failure. To think of Jesus, the still point of God’s turning story is to recall the parables he told and the Passion he lived. Though many turn to the Bible for what to believe and how to behave, I’ve come to think that it offers us something even more expansive and beautiful and imaginative."

We're back with another episode, this time with the fabulous Janaya Hall, a third-year humanities student at TWU. With many interests and passions, she chooses to focus much of her energy on ministry, a love of the written word, good food, and building meaningful connections with people. As a Discipleship Coordinator within Student Ministries this past year, Janaya has been able to experience firsthand the blessing that purposeful community can bring, as we take steps each day toward a genuine, maturing relationship with the Lord, ourselves, and others.

Although representing deep and proud roots in Bermuda, Janaya has spent a fair amount of time elsewhere, investigating how God might have her use her gifts. She says, "I want to tap into [the] potential that I believe God knits into the very essence of our being. As I discover what I am capable of and made for, I want to share my experience with [others]." Preach on, Janaya!

Peace, love, soul, and good news! We've got Trinity Western's very own Dr. Kevin Schuton the line. He serves as the Chair of TWU's Department of Media + Communication and is the lead for the Game Development program, which he founded in 2019. As a Game Studies scholar and author of Of Games & God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games(2013), his work highlights the intersection of communication, culture, media, technology, and faith. Dr. Schut's research addresses a number of exciting topics within the gaming industry, such as fantasy-role-playing and masculinity, morality and ethics, myth, historical presentation, and the influence/perspectives of video games in the evangelical community.

If you've ever been in one of his classes, Dr. Schut is quite personable. All that said, he uses his natural temperament and passion for his work to share a lively, balanced, and informed Christian take on video games and video game culture. He expertly engages a variety of issues, encouraging his students to consider both the perils and the promise of this major cultural phenomenon. Dr. Schut grew-up in Edmonton, Alberta and still cheers for the Oilers. After graduating from Calvin College, he taught overseas in schools for missionary kids in Cote d'Ivoire (on the south coast of West Africa) and Hungary for three and a half years. He is married with three daughters, who have much in common with their dad: a love for games and media.

Qinqin Zhang is an Assistant Librarian at Trinity Western whose expertise is information literacy, e-learning, and e-resources. With deep roots in the tech industry (engineering, instructional technology, library and information science), she brings a refreshing passion and insight to her role. Qinqin holds a bachelor's in computer science (told you she is really smart!) and two master's degrees that directly support her current role providing reference assistance and managing the electronic resources of TWU's library. Her big personality and welcoming smile should inspire us all to hit the library more often, and to ask for help when we need it.

Qinqin has had an extensive education all over the world (from Hong Kong, to Pennsylvania in the U.S., and British Columbia). It was actually on her school campus in Hong Kong that she got snatched by the Holy Ghost (a.k.a. "saved"). From then on, with the scales removed from her eyes, she had a new lens through which to view the world and imagine what she could contribute to it in the name of Jesus. Her presence around campus definitely adds some refreshing lightness. Take a listen to our conversation about how she came to faith, her career, and some of her must have foods.

Native to the land of gold, cocoa, and much-debated jollof rice (Ghana), Dr. Ofosuhene is no stranger to a vibrant and disciplined upbringing. If you've had the pleasure of meeting him in person or being in one of his classes, you've no doubt experienced his heart towards young people and the impotence he places on empowering emerging generations to make a meaningful difference. In our conversation, you'll hear about the roller-coaster ride of his career path and how some tremendously frustrating situations worked to soften his heart to trust God's leading. Take a listen.

Tegan McArthur is a third-year student at Trinity Western and a faithful member of TWU's women's basketball team. As a student and athlete, she has journeyed through two very different spheres of influence. Like many other groups on campus, her team and fellow student-athletes enjoy an internal culture that is thick, essentially spending A LOT of time together training, struggling, and learning together (which could drive some people bonkers, but praise the Lord that they enjoy it).

In this episode, we're talking about Tegan's faith journey, what her experience has been like playing basketball, and some issues of race that many young people like her, who are or are not student-athletes, sometimes face. Listen, share, repeat!

Cheryl Jean-Paul is the head women's basketball coach at TWU. Since joining the TWU family, she has built the Spartans program into a perennial playoff contender, highlighted by the 2017-18 season when they posted a 16-4 record, finishing fourth overall in the Canada West playoffs. Her team has been in the playoffs in five of the last six seasons.

Internationally, in 2019 Cheryl was the head coach of Canada’s FIBA U16 Women’s America’s Championship team, winning a silver medal. She has also been a key coach within Basketball BC, as the head coach for the U14 girls’ red team in 2011, the U15 girls’ red team in 2012, and the U16 girls’ team in 2015. Furthermore, as the assistant coach for the U17 girls’ team, they won silver at the 2013 Canada Games.

In this episode, we had a good, long conversation with Cheryl (be sure to grab a cup of coffee or take a break as needed), covering both highlights and challenges of the life of a coach, sports leadership in a context of Christian faith, and BIPOC (black, Indigenous and people of color) issues that young athletes (both at TWU and beyond) may face. Take a listen, share, repeat!

Whitworth physics professor, Kamesh Sankaran is known to his colleagues at NASA for his expertise in space propulsion. His students appreciate the foundational faith commitments he has, alongside aerospace smarts. This and more can be credited to his studious diligence, extroverted personality, and foremost, humble walk with Jesus.

Dr. Sankaran hails from a town in southern India about two hours outside the city of Chennai. At only 17, he received a scholarship to come to the Illinois Institute of Technology, so he packed his bags and moved to Chicago. And from there, he would go on to study at Princeton University. "It was the most significant phase of my life," he says. After a fellow research student shared the gospel with him, he began following Jesus and became involved in campus ministry while flourishing in his academic career; earning masters' degrees and a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering, and Plasma science and technology.

Since joining the Whitworth University, Dr. Sankaran has been honoured as their Most Influential Professor (2014), featured in Christian Today Magazine, received the Dean’s Junior Faculty Award (2006) and an Academic Mentoring Award (2012), authored and co-authored numerous articles on spacecraft propulsion, and has been an active reviewer for the Journal of Propulsion and Power and the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. Even with these lofty accomplishments, and many more, one of his favourite joys is to just have lunch with his students and listen to their stories. "The one thing that stands out is God's goodness," he says, "and the many ways I've been blessed, first and foremost, with relationships with my colleagues and my students."

Susie Gamez is a speaker, writer, and as she puts it, "reconciler." Canadian by birth, Korean by heritage and Mexican/American by marriage, it's no wonder she is so passionate about issues surrounding culture, diversity, and justice. You may also recognize her when she spoke at Chapel (Why Being Different Matters, and Trust Issues) in early 2020. In this episode, we chat about the imperative for Christians to be salt and light in the world and take action on the ills that plague our communities. In order to do that, though, we need to embrace the sometimes unpleasant, but oh so joyful reward of discomfort.

After 14 years serving as a youth pastor and church planter in South Central Los Angeles, she now lives in Long Beach, CA where she is on staff with Light and Life Christian Fellowship (fun fact: she and her former team once transformed an old warehouse into a two-story teen community center for the neighbourhood). Susie and her husband, Marcos, met at Fuller Theological Seminary while earning their M.A. in Intercultural Studies and now have four awesome LatAsian babies who have lots and lots of energy.

Susie sensed God calling her to a life of Kingdom work in high school. Eventually, the Lord won over her heart for full-time ministry and ever since she has sought to help young and old alike understand that they are created in God’s image; created for a purpose.

Apart from ministry, Susie is crazy about her family, Korean food, and movies with epic plot twists. Take a listen, share and repeat!

Michelle Stephen is a TWU alum (13') with an exuberant personality and an even crazier heart for Jesus. As a former student and staff member at TWU, she fell in love with the community and soon found it a launch pad for her ministry, personal development, and relationship with her husband, Ricky.

Michelle, raised in Kamloops and with South African heritage in her family, has never been one for a conversation that doesn't get to the point. In this episode we're chatting about something we each can find challenging, but something oh so important for our walk with God and general sanity. Sincerity seems to frighten people. Why is that? As you'll hear her say, it is because walking in sincerity before God, yourself, and others demands a plunge into the practice of vulnerability. Even so, we need to understand who we are and who we are not. A big part of being fully human is being yourself in the best ways possible. Understanding who we are as a created and beloved child of God, what we are feeling, and the gifts God has given us to glorify Himself and authentically minister in Jesus' name, is vital if we are to walk as people of peace.

Today, Michelle and Ricky are adventuring through life and ministry together, being sure to pause in the places and spaces where they are needed most.

Olivia Francis-Akolo ('20) is a TWU grad with a big dream, but more importantly, a journey marked by the Creator's fingerprints. If you've been a student at Trinity in recent years or are from Alberta, you may recognize Olivia from her many times sangin'(yes, that's right, sangin') at Open Mic Nights, sharing her creativity through graphic design, or winning the 2014 Peace Country Idol. Either way, it's clear that Olivia bleeds artistic energy.

Olivia is a London (England) native, with roots in Nigeria and an eclectic family tree. Her parents (a medical doctor father and mother who is a former midwife), raised Olivia and her brother in London until journeying to Alberta for a new start in a new country. Like many young adults, high school graduation brought with it new ideas and uncertainties for Olivia's future. When Trinity Western came into the picture, her passion for music and design became a life dream that was no longer just a distant imagination; this could be her career, if she chose it. The freedom of options that Olivia discovered through Trinity inspired her to pursue music and design intentionally, which eventually led her to start OSANII Designand work with some amazing organizations.

Philip Yancey is an American author whose work pertains primarily to the spiritual issues of our generation. His books have sold more than fifteen million copies in English and have been translated over fifty languages making him one of the best-selling contemporary Christian authors. We're also chatting with special guest Kim Evans, CEO ofEffect:Hope. For 16 years, she worked at Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship of Canada, a ministry dedicated to inspiring students, youth and graduates to follow Christ. Prior to that, she practised law for 17 years.

Growing up in a strict, fundamentalist church in the southern USA, a young Philip Yancey tended to view God as “a scowling Supercop, searching for anyone who might be having a good time—in order to squash them.” Yancey jokes today about being “in recovery” from a toxic church. “Of course, there were good qualities too. If a neighbor’s house burned down, the congregation would rally around and show charity—if, that is, the house belonged to a white person. I grew up confused by the contradictions. We heard about love and grace, but I didn’t experience much. And we were taught that God answers prayers, miraculously, but my father died of polio just after my first birthday, despite many prayers for his healing.”

For Yancey, reading offered a window to a different world. Ever since, Yancey has explored the most basic questions and deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, taking millions of readers with him. Early on he crafted best-selling books such as Disappointment with God and Where is God When it Hurts?while also editing The Student Bible. He co-authored three books with the renowned surgeon Dr. Paul Brand and has earned13 Gold Medallion Awards from Christian publishers and booksellers. He currently has more than 15 million books in print, published in over 50 languages worldwide.

But away from writing, Philip enjoys ice cream (A LOT), skiing, climbing mountains, mountain-biking, nature, theology (in small doses), politics, and classical music (just to name a few).

Reconcile, aka Ronnie Lillard, is a rap artist based in Miami, FL. While trying to make sense of a rough childhood and young adult life, the harsh realities he inherited kept him hostage: depleted resources, constant trauma, family dysfunction, incarceration, violence, drugs and firearms. South Florida raised him. But encouraged by a deep passion for his people and love of music, he eventually began using rap to craft a message for his generation.

Encouraged by a deep passion for his people and love of music, he eventually began using rap to craft a message for his generation. Reconcile’s words champion the forgotten and serve as the rhythm hidden in the pulse of those getting by on hope. One soul at a time. Reconcile states, “As I began seeking a real relationship with the Lord, my life changed and the value of everything else in my life began to decrease as my desire and passion to know Jesus intimately and follow him grew. The gospel of Christ brought perspective and hope out of the pain I had endured. I wanted to go and tell people about the one who has redeemed me, I wanted to share this hope with those who are from broken homes, trailer parks, and the projects…that Jesus can save them too.”

RECONCILE has charted #3 on iTunes Hip Hop and debuted on the Billboard charts, landing placement on the Top Rap Albums at No. 20. Reconcile’s latest EP CATCHING BODIES debuted #30 on the Billboard Christian charts. The Miami native not only challenges our views on faith and race in America but he also is an advocate for juvenile justice and serves on the Miami Circuit Advisory Board in attempts to curve juvenile recidivism and violence.

Christa Eisbrenner is a missionary, speaker, church planter, and Dean of the School of Women in Ministry. Her years of vocational experience has taken her to various countries, and has helped her develop the lives of diverse peoples around the globe. Christa's heart for mission, but ultimately for Jesus, is what drives her to stop for the one no matter whee she is. Take a listen, share and repeat!

Through her various experiences, Christa has grown in her love for Jesus and love for others inside and outside of the church. She desires to see those who don’t know Jesus come to a personal and saving relationship with him, and for those in the church to grow in their faith and compassion for the whole world.

Christa grew up loving Jesus, and left her farm on the prairies to share the love of Jesus with African village girls, Middle Eastern princesses and disgruntled immigrants in Europe and North America for 16 years. The last place Christa thought she would follow Jesus to was home in Canada by way of marriage and a family thereafter. But, even in this, Christa has stewarded the call of God on her life. These days Christa follows Jesus by being intentional with her family and culturally/religiously diverse community. She teaches Christians how to better engage their religiously diverse communities and teaches women to be grounded in their value and purpose as an image bearer of God.

We're catching up with Natalie Brown; writer by trade, storyteller by choice. Natalie's heart for entering into the power, love, and purpose of God launched her venture into writing and speaking.

Soon after graduating from Hope College with Communications and Leadership, Natalie self-published her first bookFifty-Two Cups of Coffee: Weekly Reflections for the Contemplative Soul. This devotional pilot was written to help people listen, reflect, and respond to what God is saying. As Natalie puts it, "life is loud. Every day we are bombarded with the noise of simply being alive. In the midst of it all, it is easy to forget the voice that matters most. Through personal storytelling, honest insight, and Biblical study, this book will surely awaken your senses to the sounds of hope."

Today, Natalie finds herself on a mission of inspiring hope, cultivating curiosity, and unearthing greater expectancy (in God, herself, and others) through writing! That's just how she shows up to life; choosing to see, believe, and do all things through the eyes of faith.

When she's not speaking or writing, you'll probably find Natalie encouraging her followers over at her blog, dreaming of countries to visit, or taking some solo time with a cup of tea or coffee.

Peace, love, soul, and good news! In this episode, the Rev chats with Dr. Temple Smith, an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Hope College and founder of Flamingo Society. Her passion for learning and teaching, paired with her vivacious advocacy for equal opportunities in education, is a halmark of her life's ministry. Being voted as Hope College's Professor of the Year (16') is enough said!
