I understand the challenges of creating the perfect red or copper hair colour. I've been there—accidentally creating hot roots and struggling with unpredictable results. Not anymore. My breakthrough came when I revisited my Art School notes and developed a unique approach to Creative Colour Theory.

Being a hairdresser is a demanding and physically intense job, and as the years go by, many older stylists may feel the pressure of staying relevant and up-to-date with the latest techniques. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. One of the key challenges for hairdressers over 40 is staying motivated and inspired, whilst releasing the fear of bring irrelevant or out of touch.
Hair education has changed over the years. If you've been hairdressing for 20 or more years, foundational skills like curly hair, hair-painting for redheads, and dry cutting were not widely taught when we started. Social Media has also changed how we do business and attract clients.
I love the our guest interviewed in this episode 'Mr D' slid into my DMs to suggest we discuss being a hairdresser over 40 because we're both in our forties and loving it!
Mr. D and I discuss how diversifying within the industry can help maintain passion for the craft. He emphasises the importance of constantly seeking new opportunities, whether it's creating products, specialising in niche areas, or engaging with clients in innovative ways.
His advice? "Don't be afraid to do more. Diversifying is a good thing." This podcast episode is a lively discussion between a couple of hair industry friends who have been hairdressing for 30 years.

Hair Aid is an extraordinary organization dedicated to providing livelihood skills training to women recused from the sex trade, drug lords and those who live in critical poverty, and hair cutting skills. Once trained, the ladies can earn money, and create a pathway out of poverty. In Australia Hair Aid conducts Community Cuts events, providing free haircuts to those who need a hand up.
Hair Aid now has seven international projects a year, and 20+ hairdressers at a time come on each project. Training can be under a tree or on a basketball court – wherever space and people are willing to learn. In five days, the locals learn five basic cuts. With their newfound skills and also the hair-cutting kits donated through Hair Aid, the locals can go on to open their own businesses – even on the side of a road – to start earning money to feed their children. To date, Hair Aid has trained over 6700+ people.

Achieving that perfect, fiery Level 7 orange copper can be a bit of a journey, especially when starting from different hair colours.
Imagine this: five clients walk into your salon, each with a different starting point. Balayage is a technique to is adaptable to blondes, brunettes, brondes and redheads. Anyone that wants natural sunkissed haircolour is the ideal client to try subtle freehand techniques. There are so many different applications for different end results. The term balayage is taken from the French word for ‘sweeping’. ‘It’s a freehand hair colouring technique that gives a blended, natural look with no harsh or obvious regrowth lines.
Balayage differs from foil highlighting because the hairdresser paints colour directly onto the hair instead of wrapping it in foil. There are no stripes and it’s all about the seamless blends and future proof vibes for low-maintenance colour that looks gorgeous as it grows out without any harsh lines or obvious roots.

As a hairdresser, I understand there's a lot of misleading or contradictory information about hair colour formulations. It's time to stop sacrificing brightness and tone with fashion colours for grey coverage and vice versa.
It's also time to stop making every Blonde client who requests to return to their natural brunette shade a reddish brown or accidentally green.
Gold is much better suited as a Filler when transforming a Blonde to Brown than Red.
There are both warm and cool golds in every colour brand.
Cool Golds or Iridescent Violet-based Golds are better for filling light hair on a client who wants to be darker and cooler or natural results. In contrast, gold or orange-yellow golds are better for filling blonde hair to warm natural results, including copper or red.
Grey Coverage fashion colours should not contain any gold. You need to add Natural into your grey coverage fashion colours. Trust me. It works with every brand.

Wondering why your client's hair turns green or red when you dye it several shades darker? In this episode, we answer that question.
You need to fill your client's hair if you are going 2 or more levels darker. That is a colour principle that you need to memorise. Any brand. Any salon.
Let me break it down for you:
- If you are only going one shade darker - no filling is required.
- If you are going 3-4 levels darker - you need to fill 2-3 shades darker. This is a double-process colour service.
- If you’re changing a client more than 4 levels darker, you will probably need to do a few layers of colour, including a filler, then a colour, and a final glaze or toner.
There are 3 methods that you can use for filling hair:
- You can fill the hair with a semi-permanent colour or toning shampoo if it’s highly sensitised or damaged.
- You can apply a tint or oxidate colour onto the hair and then comb it off and paint your 2nd layer over it.
- You can also fill hair before dying it darker with semi or demi-permanent colours. This is the most predictable, but not always the best solution for every hair type. In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast for Hairdressers, we're talking about filling with a demi-permanent for ashy cool, warm and natural results. So if you always end up with an unwanted red tinge to your client's hair or a drab murky green, this is for you! ------------------

I’m spilling the tea on Hairdresser Facebook Group Formula Requests, and why they’re a recipe for disaster! I am freaked out by the epidemic of stylists asking strangers on the internet for help. The questions, the comments, and the misguided answers all make me so nervous I break out in hives just thinking about it.
Here’s the thing: 90% of all Hairdressers will give a Redhead Hot Roots. 2/3 of those stylists believe the only way that you can mix and formulate a beautiful Redhead is by using a particular colour brand, but your salon doesn’t stock them.
So you feel that you won’t be able to do it because someone told you the colours you stock in the salon can’t create beautiful Red & Copper formulas.
Sound relatable?
Here’s the tea: if you want to avoid messing up Reds, you have to learn how to combine Creative Colour Theory with Science. But most people end up just guessing formulas or blaming the brand they use and – shocker! — it doesn’t work!

Updating your service menu by bundling popular services under exciting, trend-inspired names. Give your clients the thrill of trying something fresh with packages like "Cowgirl Copper Glaze" or "Champagne Sparkle Foils." Consultations are the key to your success as a Hairdresser. The salon chair is a sacred space for the client experience.
It is important to know how we can best serve our clients without our ego preventing this. They don’t expect us to be a guru or to have all the information about every aspect of hair and world current affairs. They want to be seen, touched, feel a connection and have their hair washed/coloured/styled. Don’t overcomplicate it.
We need to contribute to the happiness in their hair. We are not perfect. We don’t need to be perfect. What does the client sitting in your chair need? It’s so important to know how to use the tools and techniques with strong communication skills as a Hairstylist.

Copper will always be trending, whether we call it Kendall Copper, Cowgirl Copper or Pumpkin Spice, it’s a classic colour that all Hairdressers must know how to do. You can not simply have one tube of colour you mix up for every Copper request because there are so many variations that range from brownish caramels to vibrant orange and everything in between.
Cowgirl Copper, also known as Red Copper or Rusty Red, draws its inspiration from the American West. What sets it apart is the balance between fiery red and natural copper hues, creating a mesmerising, multidimensional effect that's both vibrant and wearable.
Cowgirl Copper is the hottest colour trend of the moment & it’s a heck of a lot spicier than Caramel.
I love this trend within the red hair colour spectrum because it’s luring more and more brunettes to try something new. They're stepping away from the ash balayage requests and feeling brave to get a warm glow-up. Yay! Finally!

As a hairdresser, I understand there's a lot of misleading or contradictory information about hair colour formulations. It's time to stop sacrificing brightness and tone with fashion colours for grey coverage and vice versa.
It's also time to stop blaming the brand you use.
In this podcast episode, I’ll share the Secret why choosing Gold instead of a Natural Base is not your best option for Fashion colour Grey Coverage, including Redheads!
To achieve consistent and predictable grey coverage results, always opt for 'N' in grey coverage, including for Redheads! 'N' is more predictable than using 'G'. Most 'N' series already contain Gold, so in fact, you're already using some Gold when you opt for this.
If you have a Redhead grey coverage request and choose to use 'Gold' you might get grey coverage. You might also get Root Glow. You will definitely get more Gold than desirable and probably end up needing to correct it with toners. Don’t do it! Gold is a “NO” from me. Whatever the percentage of grey your client has is the percentage of ‘Natural’ or Base colour you will need to cover their greys successfully.
Trust me. That works. I’ve built my wildly successful haircolour business by becoming the go-to girl when Redheads find their first grey.

Hair Has No Gender yet so many salons are still offering men's and women's haircuts. I commit to embracing diversity and eliminating discrimination in the hairdressing and beauty industry.
I am proudly a member of The Dresscode Project. The DCP is a global alliance of salons and barbershops committed to providing positive, gender-affirming services for LGBTQ+ clients.
My role as their Australian Change Maker is creating safer spaces with transparency around gender-free pricing and terminology within consultations and services through education.
I reached out to Jain Moralee, Co-Executive Director of Twenty 10 in Sydney, Australia, during the 2023 Sydney World Pride to chat with us.
Twenty-10 work with people across Sydney and New South Wales who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, non-binary, intersex, questioning, queer, asexual and more (LGBTIQA+) people and others of diverse genders and sexualities, their families and communities. Together Jain and I helped to set up the very first gender-free haircut club in Australia a couple of years ago & wanted to share our experiences from the hairdresser and youth client perspective with our listeners.

Wondering if you need to pre-lighten or bleach hair before colouring light or bright reds and coppers? In this episode, we answer that question.
Many so-called “Hair Colour Gurus” will tell you to bleach before vibrant reds. Let’s bust this myth! This is simply not true!
Unless you’re working on hair with a buildup of colour you will NOT need to always bleach before colouring hair red or copper in the salon.
Pre-lightening principles are the same as blondes, brunettes, reds and coppers. It’s no necessity to pre-lighten if you’re working with virgin uncoloured hair. However, if you’re needing to remove dye buildup or achieve 4 or more levels of lift on natural or coloured hair you will need to pre-lighten before colouring red or copper (just like when lightening to bronde, caramel, blonde). It’s the same hair colour principle.

Many hairdressers associate alcohol and drugs with celebrations and having fun, and equally reach for substances to knock the edge off a rough day. This podcast is a conversation with Clive Allwright, salon owner, global educator, stylist, and industry icon coming clean about sobriety.
This is a very sensitive issue and this interview is published with permission by Clive. I have tremendous respect for him for sharing his personal story to help others.

Very few women experiencing family violence approach specialist services or the police in the first instance. However, they are likely to tell someone they trust. Due to the 'touch and talk' nature of salon work, hairdressers and other salon professionals often develop a strong and intimate bond with their clients where personal details are revealed.
Being listened to, believed and given appropriate information can have a significant impact on someone experiencing family violence. They may not have received this kind of response elsewhere and it can encourage them to seek help and safety from a family violence service. For many women, this kind of early intervention can be lifesaving.

Wondering when to use 10, 20, 30, or 40 vol peroxide in the salon? In this episode, we answer that question.
Peroxide, developer, activator, processing solution. It’s all the same thing. Just different names are used for different strengths and by different brands to describe peroxide. Deciding on your colour tube is only part of the equation when formulating your hair colour. You also need to understand what peroxide you need based on your existing colour and your target colour.
Basically, the hydrogen peroxides' job is to lift the cuticle layer of the hair. The stronger the developer the more the cuticle opens and the more lightening of natural pigment it has.

Having a cancellation policy in theory versus putting it into practice in your salon are two very different things. If you've never communicated your policy with clients, how comfortable do you actually feel in charging them for a no-show or last-minute cancellation, or the dreaded situation when a client arrives at your salon too late for their appointment. That is #awkward because it can become a face-to-face conflict or uncomfortable conversation that pulls you away from other clients. The alternative is running so late all day if you squeeze them in that your wish they actually were a no-show.

When I google the word resilience so many blogs and podcasts and definitions pop up. The definition that I liked the most was that resilience is building skills to endure hardship.
Resilience can mean different things, but generally it means the ability to not dwell on things and bounce back with elasticity or strength. Resilience is also something you can learn to be and may not be something that comes naturally for everyone.
Resilience is not about bottling things up or thinking you need to be tough and go through things alone. In fact, it’s the opposite. I encourage you to reach out for help and support to adapt and change to new circumstances.
I have 5 tips to help improve your resilience based on articles I have been reading and researching for this episode plus my own experiences of what has worked for me in the past;
- Connections - connecting with others is so important now; in the digital age it's great to try app's like House Party or call with video on Zoom or Skype to see each other's face while speaking. Beware of social media communities at this time
- Make each day meaningful - this could mean writing some goals each day or perhaps at the beginning of the week. I have a friend that writes a goal for high priority, and 1 for would be nice to do if I had time and 1 for self care. That’s it! 3 per day.
- Reflect - journalling or writing things down of what is working and what could work better can cue a great practice to start doing. After this episode you could try writing 3 things you love doing, 3 things you like doing at work, and 3 things you are not open for anymore perhaps as a first attempt at journaling. Mention the Artists Way as a book ….
- Make a plan. Situations can improve if you work at it. What needs to be done? Take actionable steps towards your plan. How do you like to learn? Podcasts? Reading? Watching documentaries? Attending online education?
- Self-care > Do at least 1 thing a day that you enjoy and that works your physical and emotional body. This could be dancing around the kitchen or doing yoga in your living room. Watch a funny movie or soak in a long bath listening to your favourite music. Get up and get active when you want to and just relax and recharge when you don’t want to, but just be kind.

I am chatting with Youtube legend and Salon Owner, Adam Ciaccia about a free-to-access online education platform he recently setup with fellow Aussie Stylist Kobi Bokshish. Their group was setup as an industry reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic to help hairdressers across the globe seek education and connection. Within a few days thousands of hairdressers had signed up, which just shows how many people are wearing for community during a time when a lot of hairdressers are self isolating across the globe.
I like the concept of this new Facebook group called AFTERMATH Hair Education, because it encourages big names and industry disruptors to contribute live or pre-recorded videos to help inspire and educate others. And what I love about the group is that there are so many Emerging Educators or first-time presenters being given a platform to share what they do, which is awesome to see newbies share their passion in a supportive group. Today there is 10,000 members in their Facebook community and I am confident this number will keep growing.
AFTERMATH Hair Education is a Global Independent resource for Professional Hairdressers. A platform for Hairdressers to create, contribute and consume Hairdressing Education content, 24/7. In good times & bad the Global Hairdressing community is here to support one and other; united together through friendship, positivity and kindness we can overcome any crisis.
Adam and I also chat about youtube and how he built a loyal client following from sharing his approach in videos. Yep! That’s right! It is not just hairdressers that love watching hair online, it’s also our clients and our potential future clients. Now could be the time to setup a youtube station for your clients sharing how to use products that you love and sell at your salon, whether you are currently open or not.
Getting comfortable in front of a camera can be challenging, but often we are the biggest roadblocks for our own success. Join the community at Aftermath Hair Ed on Facebook and submit a vid of your doing some hair.
I would loooooooovvvvveeeee to see my gorgeous listeners (yes you!!) sharing their first ever video tutorials in the group. And just to help you feel less alone, I want you to know that I have taken the challenge too. - Self-Speak + Mindset: This is a big one! What are you telling yourself? Now might not seem like it, but it actually is a great time to set projects for 6 months from now. Start working on your dream biz or dream clientele, and start actioning the steps needed for that.

Here are the 3 things you NEED TO KNOW about how to write a media release:
- STEP 1 - Write a list of every magazine or print publication you would like to be featured in, and then write down the reason why. This could include industry or consumer magazines, or online social media communities where you ideal clients hang out.
- STEP 2 - Research the names of each publications editor or publisher or best person to contact, or the name of group administrators. This step takes a little time to complete, but is necessary to have your media database ready for launching your media releases.
- STEP 3 - Create a media release. I have created a few samples and a template for you to look at in a mini ebook on my website. This ebook suggests a few different page layouts and a checklist of things to include in each media release. And send out to relevant places.

Building connections in the technology age can be hard, but with the sound of a voice being sent we can have a more human connection. Remember people buy from people.

When you're gender non-conforming, non-binary or transgender getting your hair cut can create a lot of anxiety.
My mission as an Independent Educator is to use my voice to make changes in the way we look at #genderfreehair and to understand the concept of consultations and hairdressing skills that are based on hair inspo, as opposed to gender stereotypes. Within every Kristina Russell Education event, I share information and resources pertaining to the Dresscode Project. This podcast is an educational resource suitable for hairdressers, salon owners, consumers, clients and ally’s of the Dresscode Project and queer communities to become informed and know how to find or create a gender-affirming salon.
Simply put, Dresscode Project is about unity, acceptance, equity, safer spaces and teaching our industry that diversity is the future.
For many in our communities going to a salon and asking for a haircut that is not traditionally associated with our sex as assigned at birth is a scary and difficult experience. That wonderful happy transformation is less accessible. Our communities are wonderfully expressive and inclusive but are often denied this experience that comes without question to the straight community. Kristin Rankin has always been passionate about creating an inclusive environment, but when they realized how widespread discrimination is in the industry that they love and work in – they knew it had to change. Kristin is working to eradicate homophobia, transphobia, and discrimination according to race, sex, and gender in salons worldwide.
