We're re-branding Small Business Journeys as The Best of Charlotte podcast! A new launch will happen in the coming weeks, with new episodes and interviews with more of the best small businesses in the Charlotte area. More updates soon! ~Jeff This podcast is dedicated to sharing the stories of successful small business owners and entrepreneurs. The goal of this podcast is to provide practical information and hopefully a lot of inspiration for those who aspire to become their own boss, and for existing small business owners. My guests will range from highly successful freelancers to multi-enterprise entrepreneurs who will share their inspirations, strategies, tactics, insights, and the challenges of starting and growing a successful small business. Most interviews are conducted in-person with small business owners near my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. A lifelong literary nerd, she promotes reading, interviews authors, and teaches writing seminars, speaking frequently at libraries, conferences, and bookstores around the United States. Hello friends, and welcome back to The Best of Charlotte podcast. I’m really excited to bring you this episode. As you know by now, we do love to feature local nonprofits here on the podcast, and one of my all-time favorites is the Humane Society of Charlotte.

The Humane Society of Charlotte believes in working to improve our community by creating new, loving families, and building a world where there are no more homeless and unwanted animals. The Humane Society of Charlotte follows a no-kill philosophy, which is based on saving all animals that come to them. They believe that no healthy, treatable, behaviorally sound animal should have to be euthanized in our community.

As a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the HSC relies on the generous support of animal-loving individuals in our community to fund their work, along with low-cost fees for adoption, spay/neuter, and wellness services.

Joining me in this episode is President and CEO of the Humane Society of Charlotte, Shelly Moore. Shelly shares her background in animal care and the myriad of ways HSC is improving the lives of animals and humans in our community. Shelly also shares some really exciting news about HSC’s expansion to a new facility in 2022 and details on the super innovative concepts that will be implemented there.

I am so happy to share this conversation with you and help spread the word about the great work Shelly and her team are doing here in Charlotte. Lean in my friends, and get to know Shelly Moore and the Humane Society of Charlotte.

As per usual, we spend much of our time in this episode sharing the story of Jossie’s entrepreneurial journey. But, what I love the most about this story isn’t about what Jossie does, but why she does it. Sometimes, we accidentally bump into our true calling in our careers, and Jossie shares exactly how this happened to her, and the why behind Sweet Spot Studio.

Friends, I just know you’re going to love getting to know Jossie and her company, Sweet Spot Studio. Lean in, and enjoy…

Hello friends, welcome back to The Best of Charlotte podcast. I have to say that I’m really honored to be featuring the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Team on the podcast. The team recently relocated their headquarters to Charlotte and will be training here full-time for their upcoming international competitions.

Queens University Sports Complex is the home for U.S. Women’s Field Hockey. The sports complex boasts one of the few dedicated water-based turf pitches in the Nation and was one of the key reasons the U.S. national squad chose Charlotte for their new training headquarters.

There were many other factors, though, that made Charlotte stand out as an ideal location for the team. Coach Greg Drake, Assistant Coach for the National Team, joins me in this episode to share a few of Charlotte’s other attributes that caught the attention of the organization. The reasons why U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey now calls Charlotte home.

Again, I have to say how proud I am to have this opportunity to feature U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey here on The Best of Charlotte. Listeners, thanks so much for joining us. Here’s my conversation with Coach Drake.

In this episode, I sit down with Jamey Boiter, the Principle and CEO at BOLTGROUP - a design innovation firm that has been helping companies build better brands for 35 years. Jamey shares the story of his journey as a Graphic Designer and Brand Strategist, and how a company’s brand means so much more than a logo. Much of our discussion revolves around what Jamey refers to as a “brand ecosystem.” He lends a hand in helping me better understand the importance of the communication and culture around a brand.

As per usual, I bring up Simon Sinek and Seth Godin. I also talk a lot about Apple. That will not surprise our regular listeners, I know. But, how could I resist asking for Jamey’s opinion, a branding EXPERT, on the philosophies of these forward thinkers and the rise of one of the most recognizable and revered brands in the world?

You’ll be happy to know that I only digress occasionally, and spend most of the conversation listening intently to Jamey’s description of how the ultra-talented team at BOLTGROUP executes the mission of branding design innovation for some of the most successful companies in America, and beyond.

If you’re an entrepreneur that has struggled, as I have, with nailing your company’s brand, this episode is for you. So, lean in my friends, and get to know Jamey Boiter, CEO of BOLTGROUP.

Hey friends, welcome back to The Best of Charlotte podcast. Before I roll this interview, I just have to say once again how great it has been to finally be able to get back to connecting with our guests in person. This is the third in-person interview for the Charlotte podcast since spending 14 months recording via Zoom meetings. It’s a great feeling to be able to visit our guests at their offices and locations, and spend a little extra time getting to know them and learn more about their work.

So, speaking of visiting my guests at their locations - the location for this episode was the coolest I think so far. Amy Aussieker is the Executive Director for Envision Charlotte, a public private plus collaborative that leads Charlotte’s progress as a global Smart City through innovations that strengthen economic competitiveness, environmental sustainability and positive community impacts.

I met Amy at one of Envision Charlotte’s most recent projects, called the Innovation Barn in the Belmont neighborhood just outside of Uptown Charlotte. I would call the Innovation Barn a signature project - it is just amazing.

In this episode, Amy is going to share a lot of details about the work Envision Charlotte is doing to lead an initiative for a circular and sustainable economy here in Charlotte, and beyond. Of course, I’m also going to get her to share a little biography on her own career and how she was inspired to join Envision Charlotte back in 2013.

It’s a very circular and sustainable episode 33 of The Best of Charlotte podcast, and we couldn’t be more thankful that you’re joining us. Enjoy the episode.

Recess aims to help local restaurants and breweries utilize their dining and tap rooms during off business hours by creating unique co-working spaces for their members.

The startup began with Wooden Robot Brewery in Spring of 2021, and has since expanded into Plaza Midwood, and has plans to continue expanding as more and more restaurants participate in the program.

Recess is a concept that is going places, and if you’re one of those individuals that find yourself working out of coffee shops or bland corporate coworking offices, you will want to have a listen and learn more about Recess.

In this episode, I sit down with the President and Creative Director at BooneOakley, David Oakley. Boone Oakley is a highly successful advertising agency headquartered right here in Charlotte. Their motto: We give ambitious brands an unfair advantage.

David shares the story of how the agency started with what was seemingly one of the biggest blunders in advertising history. A “blunder” that actually got their first client coverage on nearly every major news outlet in the U.S.

We talk about David’s career prior to opening his own shop, the process of self-publishing two books, the supreme value of storytelling in marketing, and speaking of marketing - David shares the details of a hilarious and embarrassing encounter that involved Malcolm Gladwell and Seth Godin. Yeah, seriously… you’ll just have to listen so stay with me.

David also manages to utter a few words that actually encapsulate, very precisely, the reason I became a freelancer and my own boss 8 years ago.

I could go on and on, there’s so much more to this episode - friends this is just an awesome conversation with an amazing advertising mind and Charlotte entrepreneur. Thanks for joining us… enjoy.

I’m extremely honored to be sharing with you in this episode a conversation with one of the most prolific entrepreneurs and talented business minds in Charlotte – Shawn McAllister.

Shawn began his entrepreneurial journey here in Charlotte at age 21 by founding the Gin Mill tavern, and has since been involved with the construction of over 200 bars and restaurants in the area, development of luxury condominiums, and community revitalization projects. Shawn has over 25 years of business ownership and management experience growing companies structurally from the ground up, systematizing them to achieve their financial objectives, and developing individuals and teams that execute.

For my small business owner audience, and that’s most of you I would guess, you’ll find this episode especially insightful. With experience comes wisdom, and Shawn generously shares some sage advice for small business owners. Whether you are aspiring to open your own business, have just started out, or are several years into it, you’ll find value in the advice Shawn offers. Some of the best stuff happens toward the end of this episode, so make sure you stick around.

So, friends, thanks for joining us. It’s my honor to share with you my conversation with Shawn McAllister – enjoy.

but here are my Top 5 value grabs from this episode:

1 – Choose the right heroes. Find the mentor that has achieved the goals that you want to achieve, in a way that you wish to achieve them. In other words, the mentor that has been there and done that, and aligns with your values. By the way, that’s there’s a big difference between a mentor and a coach – anyone can hire a coach, but you’ll need more than a checkbook to earn a mentor.

2 – There’s no need to put everything on the line or risk everything for your business. Test your business plan or concept with the low-cost probe – dip your toes in the market before you dive in.

3 – Build enough runway for your business to take off. Take the time and do the work ahead of launch to give your business the best chance of success.

4 Customer experience above all else – period, end of story.

5 Systems and Processes build quality, efficiency, and ultimately profitability. Take the time to document, develop, and refine high quality systems and processes early on in your venture.

It’s a new year (thank God) and while we’re all busy setting out to put our new year’s resolutions into action, I thought it would make great sense to talk about donuts. Not just any donuts, Your Mom's Donuts – Courtney Buckley joins me to share the story of Your Mom's Donuts shops in Charlotte and Matthews. Enjoy!

From their website:

“Your Mom’s Donuts is a craft donut shop serving the greater Charlotte area since 2013. Owner Courtney Buckley started the business with home deliveries, then in 2014 added the first storefront in Matthews, NC, close to where Courtney lived at the time with her newborn daughter. Four years (and two more kids) later, in 2018, Buckley opened a second location, in Charlotte at Park Road Shopping Center. The Matthews shop serves as the flagship location, as well as the kitchen where the donuts for both shops are made from scratch every day.”

In this episode, I’m featuring the super dynamic fitness studio - West Kept Secret. Owners Marissa West and Heidi Hillman join me to share the story of their fitness and entrepreneurial journeys, as well as the details of their trademark high intensity fitness training methodology. This is a high-energy episode 16 of The Best of Charlotte podcast – enjoy my friends!

https://westkeptsecret.co/

https://www.instagram.com/westkeptsecret/

From the West Kept Secret website:

“WKS is a high-intensity interval-based workout that fuses together different workout focuses into one dynamic format; cardio, strength training, and Pilates. Each individual focus area provides support for an all-around healthy lifestyle but cannot deliver results on its own / as a standalone offering or class type. Fusing cardio and strength training together sheds fat and replaces it with lean muscle, while Pilates serves as the main component of core work and stability. Fusing these together in one hour saves clients time and money from having to be a member at multiple studios. They are able to experience everything they could want or need in one results-driven workout!”

In this episode, I circle back to a business originally featured in episode 2 of this podcast – Emerson Joseph – A mens grooming lounge located in the heart of uptown Charlotte. In episode 2, I had a conversation with the owner of Emerson Joseph – Zach Edwards. We discussed the origins of Emerson Joseph (also known as “EJ”) and many of the attributes that really make it such a unique experience for discerning clients.

In this episode, I’m joined by three of EJ’s most experienced team members – Alison Crawford, Carly Mullins, and Perri Jones. We talk about their individual backgrounds, inspirations for joining Emerson Joseph, and their takes on the qualities that make Emerson Joseph such a special place. This was a great opportunity for me and the listeners of this podcast to see the challenges of 2020 from the perspective of these three team members at Emerson Joseph, and get to know them a little bit in the process.

In this episode, I have an interesting conversation with Corri Smith – she’s the owner of a highly successful creative marketing and PR firm here in Charlotte called Black Wednesday. Corri shares a lot of insight into effective marketing for small businesses and gives us some great advice and resources to consider along the way. Are you struggling with your marketing? Well then, this episode is for you – enjoy!

We call this brand personification: when your business behaves like a person allowing you to market differently. We want to help you share the living, breathing human passion behind exactly what gets you up in the morning (besides coffee). Let’s be honest, we love coffee, but we’re even bigger fans of the authentic interchange inspired by sharing a cup. Our role: setting the table for your next conversation.

Whether it’s marketing consultancy, public relations, social media, design or strategy services, if you care about it, we will amplify the message and help you participate differently.
