Host Lee Sankey's guest for this two part conversation is the Circular Economy pioneer Sophie Thomas and founder of Thomas Matthews, a design agency focused on sustainability. Sophie is on a mission, and has been for over twenty years since her early experiments with circularity at the Royal College of Art in the mid 90's. In part one, Sophie talks about the influence of growing up with activist parents, how as a designer she came to be a certified waste manager, what makes a product circular and some of the enormous challenges with implementing the circular economy.

We all use PowerPoint. It is part of the fabric of business communication. Yet divides opinions and arouses mixed emotions. Some companies have even banned it and it has some famous detractors. Russell Davies joins me for a conversation about this omnipresent yet much maligned software and his brilliant new book "Everything I Know about Life I Learned from PowerPoint". We discuss PowerPoint's origins, who designed it, why it has been so successful, how it effects business communication and more.
Russell Davies is a writer and strategist. He thinks about what happens when organisations and services meet the internet and he builds things to find out more. He's worked on communications and digital strategies for organisations like Honda, Nike, Microsoft, Apple, the Government Digital Service, the Co-op and Bulb. Russell is also a regular contributor to Wired.

Lee Sankey talks to Charlotte Walsh, Co-Founder of digital product studio Digital Detox. Charlotte has been vocal about the need for more greener approaches to digital and IT. Something she champions with the team at Digital Detox. So it was fitting that our conversation took place on World Earth Day.
When we think of the causes of climate change, we tend to gravitate to things such as fossil fuels, aviation, manufacturing and the industrialised farming of cattle. The impact of digital is not something that is front of mind. If anything, we perhaps view digital as part of the solution; an enabler to do things differently. While this certainly true, as we will hear from Charlotte in this episode, digital and IT consume vast amounts of energy themselves. Their very nature means that this reality is hidden from view and the energy cost is not part of our day to day mental model.
Charlotte frames the need for greener digital with some statistics and then outlines some of things businesses, product designers and us as consumers can do to reduce energy usage. We also discuss how the off-shoring versus on-shoring debate may have shifted as companies have been remote working during the COVID19 pandemic.

Part 2 of Lee Sankey's conversation with anthropologist, strategist and author Grant McCracken. They discuss the potential impacts of COVID viewed through anthropological and cultural lenses on things like the family, the city and the world of work. Grant also flags some left-field signals that he is tracking, such as competitive charcuterie boards and talks about his latest work on the artisan movement which he describes as having matured into a transformative force.
Grant is a pioneer in culture as a strategic and driving force in business success. Not organisational or corporate culture but "big C" culture. He has taught at MIT and Harvard and consulted with companies such as Nike, Netflix, Oprah and the White House. Here he explains why culture matters to business, discusses barriers to the broader adoption of culture as a strategic input since writing his book "Chief Culture Officer" in 2009 and some of the things we can start doing to incorporate culture in our thinking.

Lee Sankey's guest is Professor Pietro Micheli from Warwick Business School. Pietro has been studying Design Thinking since its early inception and has carried out numerous studies on companies globally. So what does academic research tell us about how companies use design thinking and its impact?
This was also an opportunity for me to debate some of my own observations and theories on the practical realities of Design Thinking. Including:
1) That pace, data and iterative everyday business are limiting the oxygen design and Design Thinking need to be successful.
2) That Design Thinking is on a similar journey to Agile. Although currently, a less influential one.
In addition, Pietro talks about 3 different types of business logics and how Design Thinking can be used in Brand Management to navigate the tensions between consistency and relevance.

They have already deployed their services in 39 countries and having recently completed a Series A funding round of $7.5 million dollars with investors that include Google, they are now expanding to even more cities. Our values, beliefs and outlook influence not only what we do, but what we strive for. In this sense Optimism is a vital and defining force that shapes the future we are creating. For many the lockdown following the global coronavirus pandemic has been a period of reflection. So what role does optimism play as Governments, organisations, brands and people start to think again about how they evolve, adapt and innovate?
Door's founder Lee Sankey speaks to designer, technologist and author Pete Trainor who has recently become CEO of Vala Health. Pete is a world renowned speaker and his book Hippo: Human Focused Digital takes a philosophical look at design and technology.
The conversation covers a lot of ground, including healthcare innovation, Minimum Viable Personality, whether optimism can be cultivated and things Pete is optimistic about now and looking forward. He believes the coronavirus pandemic is to healthcare what the 2008 financial crises was to banking: a massive shock that will bring forward a period of intense collaboration and innovation.
