Chris was a police officer for over 32, 28 of which were with Toronto Police Service where he held the rank of Superintendent, commanding the Divisional Policing Support Unit, which consisted of the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) Unit, the Transit Patrol Unit, and the Community Mobilization Unit. He was also a Crisis and Hostage Negotiator during his eight years as a member of the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force. Office security is not just about Covid screening and masks! Companies have new employees who have never stepped foot in the office, others will have employees who haven't been in the office in as much as 2 years. Assuming Security will seamlessly "go back to normal" could create opportunities for mistakes to be made by employees who have simply forgotten policies and gaps could open for less altruistic people looking to take advantage of employees. Recent shootings in public spaces, notably shopping malls have our Protecting Your Assets hosts Luciano Cedrone and Brian Claman discussing the importance of being prepared. The value of conducting a risk assessment to understand the potential threats and risks your business may face; mitigating those risks with policies, procedures and training; and practicing those preparedness plans to ensure they will work when needed. No one enjoys planning for a flood, an active attacker or any other threat to business; especially if we want to believe that "it'll never happen to you!" But as the old adage goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. Take the time to review and assess your preparedness plans so that if and when that "bad" day comes, you are ready for it!
Episode 28 of Protecting your Assets, Luciano Cedrone and Brian Claman continue their discussion on security preparedness in the 21st Century and talk with special guest and former Deputy Chief turned private sector practitioner Chris Fernandes about some of the challenges in securing a big city. Chris shares his thoughts on the changing dynamics between the public, police and private security and the need to manage those relations in a positive manner to better integrate response, meet expectations and ultimately increase the safety and security of our community.
Our global community has certainly experienced a great deal of change over the last 18 months. From racial divides, extremism and increasing climate change to rising tensions across many parts of the World and of course a raging global pandemic. With the race to vaccinate now well under way and return to "normal" at least on the horizon; security programs are preparing for and asking what that new normal will actually look like. As our hosts point out, a post-Covid workplace isn't the only thing that business leaders ought to be preparing for. The new normal will demand more of security professionals who will need to be more strategic in their approach, pivot quickly as circumstances change and be more astute to the changing cultural realties of today.
Episode 26 continues the discussion on perspectives that started in Episode 25. Our hosts Luciano Cedrone and Brian Claman underline the importance of perspective and the role it plays in daily life and have some serious concerns about politics and politicians use of perspective to play a dangerous game of pandering to divisive issues for the sake of getting votes. In this episode our hosts express their views on the impact such empty gestures have on the very fabric of our society; intentionally creating the wrongful perception that Canada is amongst the most dangerous countries to live in when it is certainly amongst the most diverse and best places to live in. In episode 21 our hosts Luciano Cedrone and Brian Claman talk about Deepfake technology and the risks it brings to everyday business. Most people don't appreciate the threat of deepfakes to business and consider it a harmless technology used to create fake images that are usually funny; but there is a much more sinister side of deepfake technology which our hosts get into that business leaders should take note of - it is taking current criminal phishing applications and putting them on steroids. Why so surprised! It's an all too common occurrence. A guarding contract comes up for renewal and the incumbent is surprised and even shocked to hear that their client isn't happy with the contractor's performance.
