This workshop from Crandall University Sociology Professor Dr. Adam Stewart takes on the challenges and impacts of the dehumanization of individuals. As Christian medical and dental professionals, what should our response be to the objectification and subjectification of our patients? Dr. Stewart will help attendees understand the dangers of dehumanization and acknowledge the importance of seeing each patient as a creation of God, whose value resides in God’s love for them, not outside human categories.

This podcast features Dr. Ewan Goligher’s presentation from our 2017 CMDA Canada National Conference on Christian Medical Practice as a Countercultural Witness. Dr. Ewan Goligher is an intensive care physician and researcher in Toronto. He studied biochemistry and medicine at the University of British Columbia, and trained in internal medicine and intensive care medicine at the University of Toronto. He completed his doctoral degree in physiology at the University of Toronto and he now practices in Toronto. His research focuses on the effects of mechanical ventilation on human lung and respiratory muscle function, and the consequences of these effects for patient outcomes. He lives in Toronto with his wife and their three children.
Today’s podcast, which was featured at our 2020 Student Leaders Conference, highlights the philosophical challenges to the Christian message and a response to those challenges. Dr. David Deane earned his PhD at Trinity College, Dublin. Prior to serving with AST, he was Theologian in Residence at Colorado State University. He teaches courses in Roman Catholic Theology, Christian doctrine, Christian anarchism, Moral Theology, and Apologetics. He is a frequent theological commentator on radio and television and has written on theological issues for Times of London, the Irish Times, and the Irish Independent. In addition to articles in academic journals, he has written three books, including Resisting the Tyranny of the Banal which will be available in 2023.
Dr Lauris Kaldjian’s presentation from our 2018 CMDA Canada National Conference focuses on the impact of moral pluralism on the practice of medicine and the particular impacts of pluralism in our approach to controversial procedures like euthanasia and on our view of conscience. Dr. Kaldjian challenges us to consider how we can be salt and light in this context. Dr. Lauris Kaldjian is Director of the Program in Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where he is professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and holds the Richard M. Caplan Chair in Biomedical Ethics and Medical Humanities. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan, an M.Div. and Ph.D. in Christian ethics from Yale University, and he completed his residency and fellowship training at Yale in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. His research interests have been directed toward end of life decision making, goals of care, disclosure of medical errors, ethics education, philosophical and religious beliefs in clinical decision making, and the integration of personal beliefs and professional ethics in clinical practice.
Dr. David Levy joins us today to discuss burnout and resilience. Burnout is on the rise in healthcare and in many other fields. Being able to understand the causes, symptoms and treatment of burnout are essential to solving this problem. Dr Levy is a neurosurgeon who practiced high-risk neurosurgery for more than 20 years, specialized in surgery of the blood vessels of the brain. Dr. Levy attended Medical School at Emory University in Atlanta, and he obtained Neurosurgical Training at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona under Dr. Robert Spetzler, a pioneer in vascular neurosurgery. After completing a Fellowship at the University of Vienna (Austria), Dr. Levy was one of the first neurosurgeons in the United States to be double specialized in endovascular neurosurgery, performing minimally- invasive surgery on brain vessels without opening the head, entering through the femoral artery in the patient’s leg. Dr. Levy has performed neurosurgery in Paris (France), India, Kenya and Congo and has also spoken in the USA and internationally on topics of neurosurgery, neuroscience and faith. He was one of the keynote speakers for our 2022 CMDA Canada National Conference.
Today’s podcast features a keynote presentation from our 2021 Conference, planned by the Edmonton Conference Planning Committee. The presenter, Fr. Denis Lemieux has been a member of Madonna House since 1991, and was ordained a priest in 2004. He currently resides in Combermere, where he divides his time between teaching, writing, and spiritual direction. With so much chaos surrounding us, it can be challenging to keep our minds on Christ. In his plenary, Fr. Denis offers us ancient Christian spiritual disciplines that will help us reclaim our minds and hearts for the Lord.
