One of the most common requests I get as a Mill Hill, London based driving instructor is to take test candidates on the routes used by the DSA examiner, especially the 10 minute independent driving element.

The show is aimed at providing information for provisional license holders who are preparing for the driving test, particularly those learning with family and friends.
Currently shooting in the Mill Hill, Hendon, Burnt Oak or Edgware areas of London, we are hoping to expand to other parts of London, and the the rest of the UK. The show it self is to be distributed over the internet via podcasts, so you will be able to watch over and over the show.

Many driving test candidates in the UK fail the practical car assessment because they do not understand what the DSA classifies as un-due hesitation!
The common belief is that if you wait too long at a junction, then you will fail. This is not true, which is why I have made the video below to explain to you what this fault is, and why you should not rush at a junction and commit a serious error due to lack of knowledge.
It takes practice and experience to pass the UK driving test, so take your time and drive safely!

Do not fail the driving test for the simple driver error of misleading signals. You will not be failed for going the wrong way by the DSA examiner as long as it is done safely.

Here are 2 Driving School Videos that should help you as an inexperienced learner deal with roundabouts while preparing for the UK driving test.
The first video should help provisional licence holders with UK mini-roundabouts, particularly being able to find gaps when there are many cars approaching from the right and thus avoid the common fault of undue hesitation.
The second driving lesson video covers mult-lane roundabouts, and uses the famous apex corner that is on the Mill Hill and Hendon Aviation Square driving test route.

In this driving instructor video I teach you how to do the driving test parallel parking exercise in a toyota yaris car to the DSA standard.
While the reference points are for the yaris, they should work in other vehicles as well.
The most important thing to bear in mind is take your time, keep looking around and keep control of the car. if you make a mistake, keep practising until you get it right so that on the day of your test, your confidence is high.

There seems to be some confusion as to if a provisional licence holder is allowed to drive a car on a motorway, especially if supervised by an approved driving instructor.

As a driving test candidate, you should know the different rules and regulations that apply to bus stops and bus lanes. The DSA examiner will expect you to drive accordingly, and avoiding bus stops could be a serious driver fault to fail on especially if you are on the wrong side of the road.

It is important that you are familiar with the DSA basic car maintenance show me tell me questions that are asked not just for the benefit of passing the practical driving test, but more for your own safety once you get the pass certificate.
Knowing your tyres meet the minimum requirements, brakes are working, de-misting windscreen or using fog lights could help prevent an accident and injuries when you buy your own car. Do not just rely on breakdown services like the AA, RAC or Green Flag to bail you out.

In this driving video, I show you how to correctly use your indicators to alert other road users to your intentions at both mini and major roundabouts. Many learner drivers get confused as to what signal shoud be used when following the road ahead at a major multi-lane roundabout.
Another point of confusion is if the DSA examiner expects a test candidate to indicate when exiting a mini roundabout.

If you are taking the driving test in Mill Hill or Hendon test centres in North West London, at least one of the routes involves independent driving on a multi-lane roundabout (Apex Corner).
The driving lesson video below was made before October 4th 2010, and even then with the DSA examiners giving instructions on which direction and exit to take, test candidates where having problems. Now you have to navigate the same big roundabout without instructions!

From the 4th of October 2010, driving test candidates will be required to drive independently for about 10 minutes using either road signs or following a series of verbal instructions (which can be backed up with a diagram) or a combination of signs and instructions.

In this short driving lesson video I want to illustrate a common reason why people fail the DSA driving test, failing to deal with a meeting traffic situation safely.
Don't rush towards on-coming vehicles especially large HGVs or buses even if you have the right of way, as they tend to use their size to barge and intimidate other road users including learners displaying 'L' plates.

This driving video highlights the forthcoming changes that the DSA will be making to the driving test in April and October 2010.
The april test change will not even be noticed by many candidates but the introduction of independent driving to the test in october 2010 is a major change that could see a drastic drop in the pass rate and could even be considered unfair since candidate will need to remember a series of instructions which could be a problem for those who might have learning difficulties.

Many candidates fail their practical car driving tests due to not taking effective observations while out on the 40 minute assessment with the dsa examiner.
Even if there is nothing there, failing to consistently check the blind spots can lead to failing the driving test as it is an unsafe habit to have developed.
This driving school video shows how easy it is to forget that all important check especialy when concentrating hard on another skill which you might be having problems with.
The only way to make sure this doesn't happen to you, is to get into the habit of doing that 6 point check every time you stop on the left, or begin any of the test maneuvers.

Prepare, Observe and Move Routine
In this driving lesson video I explain POM, the technique a learner driver should always use when moving a car off from a stationary position, usually from a parked position on the left and when carrying out any of the set exercises you might get on the DSA driving test.
To get the car prepared in a manual car, you would use the clutch to select either 1st gear or reverse, set the gas (press down the accelerator a little bit and hold it still), find the bitting point (this is the bit a lot of learner drivers find hard, it is not covered in this video, as the pupil could do it okay) by slowly bring the left foot (clutch) up until you hear a change in the engine noise, at this point you need to keep both feet still as the car is now Prepared.
Carry out your observations as mentioned in the driving lesson video, making sure you don't just go through the motions, but allow your eyes to register the information. If it is safe, you can now move off by putting the handbrake down, bring the clutch up a litte bit, once the car starts to move hold the left foot still while you steer the car into the road or perform the test maneuver you have been asked to do. If you develop the habit of always using POM during your drving lessons, then you won't find yourself being penalised by the DSA driving examiner during your road test!

While the emergency stop or controlled stop as the dsa examiners like to call it is not exactly a driving test maneuver, it is still an exercise that many candidates fail on during the practial car assessment, and in this driving tips video I give you advice on things you need to do when practicing the emergency stop especially for those of you not using an driving instructor while preparing for the UK practical car assessment.
In particular, the DSA examiner wants you react promptly in stopping the car while still remaining in control and avoiding skidding.

Orange means stop at the solid line before the traffic lights, and the dsa examiner will be checking to make sure you do this during the driving test.
Don't attempt to do what the driver in this driving video did, as it will mean you'll faill the driving test.
The video also gives some advice on dealing with traffic lights on fast national speed limit dual carriageways, something a lot of candidates are not comfortable with on the driving test and should be practised while on lessons with your instructor.

You should normally try and drive around a mini roundabout, avoiding as much as possible the solid white marked area, however as this driving lesson video shows, this is not always possible and you might have to straight line it instead.
I have seen many learner drivers try to go around this particular mini-roundabout instead of driving straight across it and almost hit the kerb in the process.
The purpose of this roundabout is just to give priorty to traffic, which is why it is so small.
