Bonus episode! I was asked to sit in on CFRC Radio's new music show, This Just In! on Thursday, 6 June at 10 AM. This show was put together 3 minutes before broadcast, and that is simply the cut and thrust of live radio! I picked out some of my favourite recent releases you may be unfamiliar with, and artists playing North by North East festival in Toronto next weekend. Coming for you in this playlist: indie, pop, hip hop, punk, rock music so cool you need to wear shades to listen to it (context for the cover art).

Also, apologies for the first link of the show, I had the wrong mic on in the studio, so what you hear is what the mic could pick up of me from across the room.

Artists played: Sofiacide, Ballsy, shef's kiss, Tiny Horse, charlieeee, Luscious, Perennial, Tapir!, Pet Shop Boys, TOBi, 4sante, The Anti-Queens, Gurriers, Brògeal, Täbï Yösha

*A correction: Brògeal are a Scottish band from Falkirk, not an Irish band.

This week was an experimental show: can you do a live radio show if you haven't slept in two days? If radio DJs marathoning shows for charity can, surely I, Rue can too! Cue a fun, loose, ever-so-slightly shambolic show where pulled out new CDs, did some on-air Bandcamp diving and had LIVE coverage of the Grammys from Hayden!

Music by: Pet Shop Boys, The Last Dinner Party, Nothing But Thieves, Rachel Chinouriri, Silent Forum, The Knife, Blur, George Gadd, The Maddocks, Lime Garden, Master Peace, Arab Strap, Dry Cleaning, Catatonia, Nadine Shah, The Get Alongs, The Wilderness.

This one's a special show for me! For this show, Yellow Brit Road (I) was on the ground in Toronto, where I caught up with a personal hero of mine: Gruff Rhys, Welsh musician, former frontman of the band Super Furry Animals, one half of Mercury-nominated duo Neon Neon, storyteller extraordinaire and solo musician. Gruff was performing at the Drake Underground in Toronto on 17 October 2023, supporting indie-folk band This Is The Kit on tour across North America.

We talked about the Welsh music scene, the 90s, Super Furry Animals, Welsh pop culture, Super Furries' "lost techno album", and Gruff's upcoming solo album, Sadness Sets Me Free, out 26 January 2024! (tomorrow)

Most of the music on this week's show is not on streaming services, but in case including it becomes a problem, here's an edited version.

This week on the show, we paid tribute to Emyr Willams, the late cofounder of 90s Welsh independent alternative label Ankst Records, who were at the heart of the emerging Welsh-language alt rock scene of the 80s and 90s. We also had part of my interview with singer of Montreal bands the 222s (Montreal's first punk band), new wave band 39 Steps, and many others, Chris Barry! Many of the Welsh artists on this show aren't on Spotify, so I'll link a playlist and have included some music in the pod. Music this week by:

The Libertines, English Teacher, Nia Archives, Yard Act, Cowboy Hunters, IDLES, Cassyette, Long Distances, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Catatonia,Tynal Tywyll, Ty Gwydr, Ectogram, Beganifs (Big Leaves), Tystion, Super Furry Animals, Datblygu, 39 Steps.

If there's one band who have had a gigantic year, it's got to be Toronto indie rock band Kiwi jr.! After releasing their third album Chopper in August 2022, the band have spent the last 18 months touring Europe and North America, opening for bands (and their personal heroes) like Pavement, Dinosaur jr., Sloan, Guided By Voices, and so many more. And now they drop by Kingston for a date at the Grad Club, Friday night, supported by Queen's student band Girldad.

I spoke to singer and guitarist Jeremy this week for CFRC's Indie Wakeup Call (where you can find me on a Thursday morning on campus with some lovely cohosts), listen on to hear us talk all about that show and Kiwi jr.'s incredible year, and come to the show tomorrow! You bet I'll be there!

Happy 2024 everyone! This week's show was the first live show of the new year, and we charged into it with new releases, some news from the indie charts, watched a stone-cold indie classic in Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out turn 20 (already!?), and had a little peek ahead at my interview with Chris Barry, who sang and fronted, amongst many other bands, Montreal's first punk band, the glam punk outfit The 222s back in 1978, and the post punk band 39 Steps in the 80s, a band who you may have seen in the Woody Allen film Hannah's Sisters. Look out for the full interview next week! Music this week by:

Sprints, The Vaccines, ARXX, Gen and the Degenerates, Courting, The Last Dinner Party, 3 Little Wolves, SYBS, Dream Nails, Bob Vylan, Sam Akpro, Venus Grrrls, Ekkstacy, The 222s, 39 Steps, Franz Ferdinand, Kiwi jr., Kings of Queens.

This week's show gives you an an exclusive invite to the coolest indie nightclubs: Club Yellow Brit Road, an indie disco of the mind. We're keeping finals season blues at bay by pumping up the energy on the dancefloors, on the kitchen floors, in the library, your ears, wherever. To be honest, the podcasted version this week is just 30 second clips of me shouting out the CFRC Funding Drive (we gotta stay on air), so it's worth finding the full show in archives (I worked real hard on the transitions between songs, go check it out), but to keep you entertained, I've tried to have good transitions on the podcast too. Enjoy! Music by:

This week, I caught up backstage with Conner Molander, guitarist, backing vocallist and multi-instrumentalist proficient in keys and the drums, of the Montreal indie rock three-piece Half Moon Run. The band stopped by Kingston to perform a sold-out show at the city's Grand Theatre, supporting their newest album Salt. We talked about the album and the world tour they embarked on for it, and about their vibrant, vivid, joyous and sometimes emotional live shows.

The interview aired on Yellow Brit Road this week, and here it is, isolated for your enjoyment.

This week's show is a listening party to mark 20 years of an astounding piece of art in the British music canon of the 21st century: Muse's 3rd studio album Absolution (2003). An album with an expansive and career-defining sound that launched Muse worldwide as a force to be reckoned with in rock music in the modern age, even while the album itself is hard to cage into a single genre: classical orchestral strings, Rachmaninoff-esque Romantic pianos, existential themes and the heaviest basses you've ever heard meld together into a fine work of art on one of Muse's finest albums. Grab your copy of the album and join my guest Vita and I as we redefine our experience of music. You won't want to miss this one.

This week marks the 50-year anniversary of the birth of hip-hop, far away in Bronx in NY, USA. It has since grown in legitimacy to become one of the most popular genres of music around the world. So what's happening right now in the UK and Ireland? We dove into the modern UK and Irish hip hop scenes, looking at some of the unique subgenres hip hop has spawned through collaborations and shared influences, from grime, UK drill, neo-jazz drawing from jazz and RnB particularly in London, grime-punk, etc. We also looked at Welsh and Irish hip hop. Plus new music, and a guest, Clara in the studio bringing in some cool music picks, plus joining me in the Mic Room to talk about The Horrors (the band, not like... existential horrors. Not the Horrors. The Horrors (band), and their debut album, 2009's Primary Colours.) This week on Yellow Brit Road, we paid tribute to bassist Andy Rourke of the Smiths, who died following a battle with pancreatic cancer. No better way than to honour his legacy than by bringing out the vinyls the band sent to our station in the 1980s, to listen to his fine bass work as it was recorded and intended to be heard. We brought out some CDs sent to us by Iceage as well (for the story behind that, you're going to want to listen to the show!) Plus, Spring Reverb previews! If you're in Kingston, do check out the lineup and come by, we have great music playing the city this week starting Thursday. I'll see you there! Music this week by

Let the Yellow Brit Road coverage of the Eurovision Song Competition 2023... begin! Our favourite multinational, multilingual, multi-genre, multicultural festival of music, culture, fun, silliness, campness, learning an insane amount about a country in particular and bopping along to banger pop tunes, Eurovision is upon us! Hosted in Liverpool, UK last weekend, you were only bound to find the most enthusiastic coverage here. We had some of our favourite entries from this year's competition, as well as some great submissions sent into the show from Finnish rock band The Bablers and Welsh musician Angharad's debut single.

This week, a show I've wanted to do for three whole years: a dive into the Welsh language music scenes in the 80s and 90s! We covered the Welsh alt and rock scenes of the 80s and 90s, y sîn roc (ac alternatif) Gymraeg, the Cool Cymru movement of the 90s, and basically played some of my favourite bands ever.

To make it easier to find the bands, this week's playlist is a YouTube playlist, with additional videos thrown in for you to actually see the bands played. I've linked to Discogs where no band website, etc. is available, should you want to find more of their work yourself (this will become standard for our setlists from now!). Setlist:

  • Datblygu
  • Ffa Coffi Pawb
  • Tynal Tywyll
  • Atyniad Ychwanegol
  • (Yr) Anhrefn
  • Y Cyrff
  • Heather Jones
  • Llwybr Llaethog

Another album listening party this week! Carrying on from last week's theme of pub rock, we turned to the post punk it helped spawn in the 1980s with one of the great English post punk bands, Gang of Four. Blending academic theory, liberal thought and philosophy, musical techniques borrowed from film, advertisement, slogans, and an undeniably catchy brand of dance punk, we listen to the forward-thinking Leeds four piece's second album, 1981's Solid Gold.

This week on Yellow Brit Road, we have an album listening party! Join me as we dive into London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s, a precursor to the explosion of punk rock in the late 1970s. We talk about its legacy, and listen to the debut album by one of the best bands of the era, Dr. Feelgood, "Down By The Jetty", in honour of their pioneering guitarist Wilko Johnson, who passed away this week.

On the Yellow Brit Road, we are celebrating the return of live music after 2 years off, as the summer of live music and festivals comes to an end. We're looking back at 4 months of hearts racing, crowds singing, friendships formed, memories created, ordinary people turning into heroes and gods for 45 minutes.

Throwing back to the first of the summer festivals that kicked off at the end of March, the 6 Music Festival in Cardiff. We listened to Manic Street Preachers' homecoming set at Clwb Ifor Bach, 32 years after the band were scheduled to play the venue and had to cancel.

The full show may be available for a limited time on the podcast, depending on conditions. Catch it now, or catch full shows in the archive.

This week's a big one—we had the Yellow Brit Road's first virtual indie night! As the yellow road turned into a mirror-laden, disco ball-strung indie dance floor, our theme was mellow rave: guitars, synths and sway to give you a breather and a great night out over this long weekend (and have you in bed on time, if you so wish). This one's more fun live so catch the show in the archives, setlist:

  • Fanclubwallet
  • Cadence Weapon, Alice Ivy
  • Super Furry Animals
  • Lava La Rue
  • Accü
  • Dehd
  • Minaxi
  • Kiwi jr.
  • The Astros
  • Virgo Rising
  • Mush
  • Young Guv
  • Film Noir
  • Working Men's Club
  • Nakhane, Moonchild Sanelly, Nile Rodgers
  • Easy Life, Kevin Abstract

Sway along to the playlist here. (or catch up in the archive—I spent hours perfecting those transitions between songs). Try to support artists directly through Bandcamp, etc.

It's album listening party night on the Yellow Brit Road! This month, we're listening to revolutionary Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers' 1994 third studio album, The Holy Bible. A brutal and breathtaking collection of ideas, poetry, literature and revolution, it is today regarded as one of the best albums of the 1990s, and one of the Manics' own finest, and an album that kicked off the Cool Cymru scene in mid-late 90s Britain.

Grab your copy of the album and listen along, and tune back in next week for the best new British releases!

What, I implore you, listeners, didn't happen this week? I tried on this week's show to cover the events of The Week That Everything Happened: from the chart battles, to the press spats, changes coming in the music industry and more (what is this, the 1990s!?) Of course, all of that was supplanted by a flood of excellent new releases, from

It's album listening time of the month on the Yellow Brit Road!

This time, we dive into an incredible album that recently turned 20 years old, Rufus Wainwright's breathtaking second album, Poses that released in 2001. The album melds together rock, indie pop, touches of RnB, influences from opera, theatre and classical music, all over Rufus's rich, distinct vocal harmonies and piano playing, to create a sound that is a timeless pop classic.

Rufus also has a new release, a live version of Unfollow The Rules out now.

Bring your copy of Poses and listen along to this fantastic album!

What didn't happen on the Yellow Brit Road this week? Treading down this leaf-strewn path, we had word from an authority on the 80s, Trevor Horn, touched down in Wrexham for the incredible FOCUS Wales festival (fyi they had a tiny Canadian showcase week too. Showcase festivals are the best things in the world and they can have everything), had some great synthpop releases, talked about the rise of shoegaze and indie scenes in south eastern Asia, and had great submissions and music per usual! Our setlist for this week had

  • Erasure
  • She Drew The Gun
  • ĠENN
  • Clwb Fuzz
  • IDLES
  • Baba Ali
  • Jaz Karis
  • The Institutes
  • Youth Sector (my new favourite band)
  • Michael Gallagher
  • Daniel Romano (who never misses the mark)
  • Subsonic Eye
  • The Garrys
  • Toronto rockers The Sadies

Manchester indie rock band The Speed of Sound have been around for a long time, and know the indie scene well. They're making their dent on it once again by releasing their fifth studio album, Museum of Tomorrow, on 17 September 2021. The album orbits indie but reaches out to include diverse influences including New Wave, synth rock, jazz, pop, art rock, amongst others, and is a fantastic listen. I caught up with John Armstrong, songwriter and guitarist in the band, to talk about the album, the independent scene, radio, music, and so much more.

Here's a little teaser of what's to come. In case anyone wanted it, here are the lyrics to Datblygu's song Y Teimlad, along with an English translation.

*Y teimlad sy'n hala pobol i anghofio amser

Y teimlad sy'n haloch chi i feddwl nad yw'r dyfodol mor fler

Y teimlad sydd yn dod a cyn sbarduno gobaith

Ti'n gweld y tywod llwch ond ti'n gweld fod yno flodau*

*Y teimlad, beth yw'r teimlad?

Y teimlad sydd heb esboniad

Y teimlad, beth yw'r teimlad?

Y teimlad sy'n cael ei alw'n gariad

Cariad, cariad, y teimlad*

*Mae hapusrwydd yn codi ac yn troi yn wir rhywbryd

Ac mae'n dangos fod yno rhywbeth mewn hyd yn oed dim byd

A pan mae'r teimlad yno mae bywyd yn werth parhau

Ond yn ei absenoldeb mae'r diweddglo yn agosau*

*Y teimlad, beth yw y teimlad?

Y teimlad, sydd heb esboniad?

Y teimlad, beth yw y teimlad?

Y teimlad, sy'n cael ei alw'n gariad*

----

*The feeling that makes people forget time

The feeling that makes you think the future isn't so bad

The feeling that comes before sparking off hope

You see the sand dust but you see that there's flowers*

*The feeling, what is the feeling?

The feeling that's inexplicable

The feeling, what is the feeling?

The feeling that is called love

Love, love, the feeling*

*Happiness rises and turns true sometimes

And it shows that there's something even in nothing

And when the feeling is there, life is worth continuing

But in its absence the end approaches*

*The feeling, what is the feeling?

The feeling, which is inexplicable?

The feeling, what is the feeling?

The feeling that is called love*

R.I.P. Dave Datblygu

The Yellow Brit Road turns one! We've been on this golden road a full year now, so here's to another great show to celebrate!

June is Pride month, and we're celebrating with queer musical history and icons all month. This week, we explored the legacies of arguably the first openly trans rock and roller, Jayne County, and the godmother and inventor of all rock music anywhere, Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

Our submission this week was from Floridian indie-pop band Community Towel, who say of themselves, "Departing from bass and vocal duty in post-hardcore outfit GILT, multi-instrumentalist Nico Baci uses their indie/dream-pop solo project Community Towel to explore their struggles with mental and physical health, and experiences as a nonbinary and Latinx individual"

Masala Chai artists this week were:

It's finally here! Power pop royalty decided to walk down the Yellow Brit Road with me this week, as I got the opportunity to have an in-depth chat with Finnish Grammy winning artists Arto Tamminen and Janne Haavisto, collectively one half of the pop rock band The Bablers, whose much-awaiting album Psychadilly Circus comes out on 29 May (that's right, it's not out yet, so we were able to get a sneak peek on radio!)

They talked to me about the band, beginnings and reunions, the live music scene of the Finnish '80s, about the making of this album, their career, life, philosophies, and about all the lovely songs on this record.

Attention, listeners of the Yellow Brit Road, it's album listening party time!

We're listening to Finnish power pop band the Bablers, the Grammy acclaimed pop rock band who are back from a nearly 20-year long hiatus to deliver us one of the best new albums we've heard: Psychadilly Circus!

Bigger news: singer Arto Tamminen and drummer Janne Haavisto from the band dropped by for a chat with me, and it was so lovely, I couldn't cut any of it.

So instead, you can listen to the interview and the album again, during a 2-hour time slot this Thursday, 27 May from 9 to 11 PM EST on CFRC, so do tune in! (the podcast of that broadcast will follow soon)

Quality hit the airwaves again this week, as we had great music, music history and deep dives into journalism of yore!

We had music this week from CHVRCHES, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (recommend, and I don't normally put my biases into the playlist descriptions), Public Practice from New York, Leeds punks Yard Act, psychedelic punk band Squid ft. Martha Skye Murphy; Oslo, Norway-based Pom Poko, Cultdreams from London (their guitar sound on the track we had on this week's show is the reason I fell in love with the sound of a guitar... the grit, the gravel, the grrrunge; drown me in sound!), rising star Arlo Parks, with her fantastic debut album, Royal Blood's latest, a throwback to some quality Muse piano space thrash.

Masala Chai submissions this week were New Jersey indie band Supermutt and French punks Sxndrxm, who release a new song next week!

On this week's Yellow Brit Road, we basically just missed festivals. Yeah, those open mud pits where you get icky, no showers, overpriced everything, too much music to sanely choose from (especially when two of your favourite bands are playing right across from each other), and a 27-hour drive home... we miss them. Any live music, really.

Artists on this week's show were Marcy Playground, Mogwai, Portishead, Alexandria Maillot, Deyah, Haviah Mighty, Jennah Barry, Lo! Peninsula, The Royston Club, Seazoo, Penny Mob, Shake Chain and Black Pumas.

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, we've been testing the very limits of what's possible (and permissible) on radio! It's only healthy to keep radio on its feet every now and then... with great music!

Featuring the bands Black Honey, Death Cult Electric, This Becomes Us, Superfood, Reuben James, Slum of Legs, Those Fcking Snowflakes, Fckshovel, Sweaty Palms, Dear Boy, and Curling, besides classics Queen and Vixen.

We explored a tiny little village in Austria soon to undergo a name change on account of people stealing their signposts... now look, technically, this episode is not explicit by all definitions of what it means for a show to be explicit. However, if you'd rather your children not know that there's the coolest little village in Austria called Fucking, you might want them to sit this one out (or at least, one section of the show). Other than that, as always, Yellow Brit Road, good fun for the whole family!

New music on this week's show, Yorkshire band Guru, Bristolian trio Svalbard, and a compilation album released by Nottingham-based Punk 4 the Homeless, which can be found on Bandcamp.

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, new indie, Martian fallacies, and those big gay hands.

We opened this week with Joni Mitchell's dive through the archives. She released a radio performance of her covering "House Of The Rising Sun" at the CFQC AM Radio Station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1963 - the earliest known recording of Joni Mitchell.

Our second song, David Bowie's Life on Mars? prompted an investigation into the state of extraterrestrial exploration—and its latest advancement, the discovery of life on Venus! ...or is it?

We had new music from Supercolour, Newmaj, Rhys E, The Loft Club, TV Face, Dream Nails, Slap Rash and Denise Chaila. Find all these artists online (linked above) and give them some love!

Exciting news, this month has been the return of Britpop-era band the Doves! We a track from them.

Our masala chai for the week was freshly brewed with local water... new music from PUP (who have a new EP out next month) and Partner (album out November)!

This week was August bank holiday weekend, which means ordinarily, it should have been the weekend that the Reading and Leeds festival, one of the longest running and largest music festivals in the world, took place.

While the physical festival was called off for 2020 owing to health concerns over COVID-19, the Yellow Brit Road managed to secure passes to a very special edition of the festival: one that let us go back through the years and relive the best of live music at Richfield Avenue, Reading (and Bramham Park, Leeds)!

We experienced some of the best the festival has to offer over the past years, or as much as we could in a single hour. We jumped into the crowd for enthralling performances and walked into some of the strangest interviews from the weekend. From Penetration and Sham 69 in the 70s, all the way to the Marsicans, Kid Kapichi, LION and Kofi Stone in 2019; from Slaves in the Pit to Wolf Alice, CHVRCHES and Bloc Party on the NME and Festival stages, we went over everything in time to catch our personal weekend's headliners: Arctic Monkeys, Rage Against the Machine, and Muse. Call that a weekend?

Watch the performances again here!

John Reith, the famously uptight director of the BBC in the 1930's, took it upon himself to be the upholder of Britain's morality as director of the nation's airwaves. As we heard in the Lancashire episode from earlier, Lancastrian actor, comedian and musician George Formby often fell afoul of the BBC's standards under Reith with his cheeky and playful lyrics.

In time, the often unreasonable principles to which mostly harmless creative content was held, has come to be referred to as Reithianism. So, what does the defender of British decency sound like?

In this outtake from the show, talking about Reith's reaction to Formby's hit The Window Cleaner, I took a stab in the dark at what the redeemer of rectitude might sound like, ultimately failing miserably. As a quick Google search went on to show, this is really what John Reith sounded like.

An attempt was made!

This week's Yellow Brit Road follows the rise of the Thin White Duke, in our first-ever album listen!

We listened to David Bowie's seminal art-pop album,Hunky Dory. Cutting a portrait of a young Bowie in 1971, on the brink of stardom, a year before 1972's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars catapulted him firmly into the public eye, Hunky Dory gives us a glimpse of Bowie setting out his plans in stone, still figuring his persona out.

This week, we followed the Yellow Brit Road all the way up to the north of England, to the county of Lancashire. Between old music, local dialect, accent, culture (and chips) and poetry, this was possibly the most fun show I've ever done, and I hope you enjoy it too!

The artists played this week were Lancashire folk bands The Houghton Weavers, Oldham Tinkers, Lancastrian actor, comedian and musician George Formby, Lancaster based 90's feminist punk band Angelica (whose lead singer Holly Ross now plays in psychedelic punk duo The Lovely Eggs), and new bands TV Face, and Ivy from Preston.

The dialect poem read on the show was Eawr Sarah's Getten A Chap, by Sam Fitton. The Oldham Tinkers set the poem to music, which can be heard here.

This week's Masala Chai artist was Young Guv, the pop rock project of singer-guitarist Ben Cook, better known as lead vocalist for Canadian hardcore bands No Warning and F*cked Up. His song Cold In The Summer can be heard here.

This week's (mostly complete) playlist can be found here.

Catch the Yellow Brit Road live on radio or cfrc.ca every Sunday from 8 to 9 PM. Have feedback, suggestions, requests or want to submit your music? Email the show at yellowbritroad@gmail.com or tweet @YellowBritCFRC.

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, we dive through new music and old, discuss guitaring faux pas, and talk about identity.

We opened with a solid set by Siouxie and the Banshees, and in a curveball for this show, American singer Andy Williams. His version of Can't Take My Eyes Off You can be heard here, and Muse's jazz cover for a BBC performance in 2002, here.

Rock music is not dead, and this show will testify to that! We heard indie music from Gaffa Tape Sandy, Beach Riot, SuperGlu, Billy Nomates, Big Joanie, and Ailbhe Reddy. Billy Nomates' debut album releases in August.

We had some math rock from Clever Girl, an album recorded globally on tour by Delta Sleep, and pop excess (excuse the pun) from Rina Sawayama (with her song XS), who the Mercury Prize deemed "not British enough" on passport grounds, in spite of being one of Britain's most exciting young pop musicians. The podcast discussed in the show, United Zingdom, by journalist Zing Tsing, can be heard here.

This week's Masala Chai was straight from Toronto, Canada and featured a dash of lime as we listened to the Seams' sublime Lemonade and Partner's Hello and Welcome. Their album Never Give Up releases in November.

Consider supporting your favourite musicians directly by buying their music and merchandise!

The playlist for this week can also be found here.

Listen live on your dial at 101.9 FM in the Kingston area, or on cfrc.ca, Sundays 8 to 9 PM! (Full shows are available in the archive for 3 months from release)

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, history, geography and modern rock epiphanies!

We looked at the history of Canadian music's obsession with British bands during the British Invasion and the height of Beatlemania, particularly the interesting story of 60's Winnipeg rockers the Guess Who?

Bringing in the fast-paced bangers, we played the latest synth rock single from Percy, whose catalogue can be found on Ten Foot Records, Derry City's rocking Wood Burning Savages, explosive Norwich punks from the 2010s Fever Fever, a new lo-fi indie bop from Ginger Snaps (whose music can be listened to here), and London spoken word artist MOAK's take on the lockdown.

Janglepop and post-punk/new wave fans are in for a treat on this show as we had a mini-set of some of the best new janglepop bands from around, Leeds' Team Picture, London band E's and Fontaines D.C.

We had a Brighton set featuring 2020 Mercury Prize nominated Porridge Radio, Jetstream Pony, and the gender and genre bending synthpop band Powder Paint.

This week's Masala Chai section features the rich and vibrant tones of Toronto's very own Latina-indie pop artist Lido Pimienta's latest album, Miss Columbia.

This week's playlist can be found here.

This week, the Yellow Brit Road trekked down the paths of the current and happening in the world of music, both in the UK and globally. We listened to some classic bands and music, discussed the trends and workings of music streaming, cheered on an emerging charts battle with a front view, and sipped some masala chai from Montreal.

We heard some classic Led Zeppelin and the last EP from Gang of Four, Anti Hero. We listened to some studio and live performances by singer-songwriter L.A. Salami from London. His full performance at NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert can be watched here (bless visual media!), and his music can be purchased on his Bandcamp here.

We discussed the inner workings of music streaming platforms to the best of public knowledge about them, and why in a gig-less world of quarantine, social distancing and livestreaming, the meagre amount musicians are able to make from their music itself has to increase and why Spotify CEO Daniel Ek's comments to MusicAlly in interview this week are especially tone deaf and unrealistic.

Find out more about Tom Gray and the #BrokenRecord movement on Twitter here. A few others advocating for change include #FixStreaming and more generally, #KeepMusicAlive.

The UK and Irish music charts had a flurry of artists up for top spot by mid-week, and both ended in close finishes. We sampled the indie ware off the Irish charts with music from No. 1 and 2 spots, The Coronas and Fontaines D.C., who finished second.

Fontaines D.C.'s MTV performance, featuring Grian Chatten singing in a field, can be found here.

This week's Masala Chai features Montreal-based indie/folkpop artist Thanya Iyer.

Find some of today's playlist here. Consider supporting artists by purchasing their music on Bandcamp or directly from their websites.

Listen live Sundays from 8 to 9 PM on CFRC 101.9 FM or on cfrc.ca.

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, we took our foot off the pedal and coasted down the chill road. No good taste was harmed or compromised during the recording of this show, with our mixtape (can we a call a playlist that?) featuring the likes of Good Dog from Glasgow, Gorillaz, John and Jehn, Courting, Muse, Shingai, a brilliant cover by acclaimed guitarist Antoine Dufour.

We also celebrated our own stripped-down little version of Glastonbury festival, which was slated to happen the past weekend had everything been normal, with some artists who had a strong start on the BBC Introducing stage! We played Gaffa Tape Sandy, Palm Honey and Arlo Parks.

Gaffa Tape Sandy's Glastonbury BBC Introducing performance can be found on their Bandcamp here.

This week's masala chai, this show's regular feature where we play music from outside the UK, was more of a honied tea, keeping with the chillwave theme. We played Atlanta, GA's Night Beach, Travis Bretzer from Edmonton, Tokyo based delightful dreampop band Cattle, and France's janglepop band Pale Spectres.

Come for the pun, stay for the music. CFRC's Yellow Brit Road brings you your weekly fix of British music every Sunday evening at 8 PM. We talk British music, and its rich and exciting history, and then some!

Just a quick note, many of these artists have profiles on Bandcamp, one of the leading sites working to ensure artists get paid fairly for the music they make that is getting us through lockdown. With live gigs, one of their only sources of income, being largely out of question for the year, do consider buying their music and merchandise from there if you can instead of streaming, which has a very disadvantaged payout particularly for smaller, independent artists, who are the backbone of an indie show on a community radio station like ours, without whom this show could not exist.

John and Jehn's And We Run can be heard here. As an added bonus, here's a lovely acoustic session the band performed in 2010 for Soup Kitchen.

The playlist for the show can be found here.

This week, the Yellow Brit Road lead to a rainbow (with the pot of gold at the end and everything intact) as we celebrated Pride month. We revelled in the music of LGBTQ+ artists, sang along to Tom Robinson's national queer anthem from 1978 because we're Glad To Be Gay, and celebrated younger artists breaking new ground in queer music, both in Britain and across the world.

Featuring David Bowie, Tom Robinson, Pillow Queens, Dream Nails, Petrol Girls, Problem Patterns, Antony and the Johnsons, Noisettes, Readers Wifes, Blur, Pansy Division, and Rufus Wainwright, the explosive playlist for this week can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0qwEvb1iyydklUmSl7T1PX?si=N-vp86ocQzGg9ZOaPS0pwQ!

This week, the Yellow Brit Road marches down the path of justice in support of the Black Lives Matter movement resonating around the world. We played a few protest songs and put the spotlight on black musicians in the UK, and played a few classic tunes to lift your spirits as the world appears to burn.
