What would your life look like if you had brushed your teeth for just ten seconds longer?
In January 2020, 27-year-old paramedic Emma Mickle made a last-minute decision to join her friends on a hike through New Zealand.
On the final day, just ten kilometres from the finish, Emma sat down to remove her wet-weather gear. At that exact moment, a three-metre tree branch fell from approximately 20 metres above and landed directly on her.
In this remarkably honest episode of ListenABLE, Emma speaks about learning to live with incomplete paraplegia, chronic nerve pain, impaired bowel and bladder function, invisible disability and the loss of her career as an operational paramedic.

Three buses passed Santiago “Santi” Velasquez because he could not see when to hail them. Instead of accepting that public transport was not designed for him, the blind electrical engineer decided to build a better system.
In this episode of ListenABLE, Dylan Alcott and Angus O’Loughlin sit down with Santi to discuss the experience that inspired Halo, an accessibility-first public transport app that alerts drivers when a passenger needs assistance, where they are boarding and where they need to get off.
Santi explains how he became one of the relatively few blind electrical engineers in the world, why his parents taught him that “the only thing you cannot do is see”, and how he learned advanced mathematics, coding and engineering through Braille, audio technology and problem-solving.
The conversation also explores the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence for people with disability. Santi argues that AI can be incredibly useful, but only when people with lived experience are included in the data, design and decision-making process.
From accessible public transport and guide dog discrimination to Braille literacy, rideshare accountability and the danger of treating people with disability as charity cases, this is a powerful conversation about independence, expectations and designing a world that works better for everyone.

In 1988, Mark Dorrity went for a run on a 35-degree day in regional New South Wales. He was leading the race when severe heat stroke caused his body to shut down.
Mark spent 70 days unconscious in intensive care. He lost most of the muscle in his body, underwent a high-level leg amputation and was given little certainty about what life after hospital could look like.
But this is not simply a story about survival.
In this episode of ListenABLE, Mark joins Dylan Alcott and Angus O’Loughlin to share how he rebuilt his life from the ground up. Australia’s winter Paralympic star Ben Tudhope joins ListenABLE for one of the most honest and emotionally grounded conversations of the series.

After surviving the shooting, Larissa spent weeks in hospital recovering from severe injuries, including a partial hand amputation she didn’t even realise had happened until days after surgery.

But years later, a simple moment changed everything.
While caring for her young son, Larissa realised she could still braid hair. That small discovery became the foundation for a new career as a hairstylist and helped her rebuild her confidence.

When Joshua Ruff’s heart stopped for three minutes, everything changed.

Joshua Ruff is a gardener, lavender producer, and founder of Henle Gardens in regional Victoria. Living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Joshua has transformed personal adversity into creative expression, community connection, and entrepreneurship.
After surviving cardiac arrest in 2020, he committed to building a life driven by purpose rather than fear. Today, his lavender farm produces oil, dried lavender products, and hosts garden visits, festivals, and community groups, proving that accessibility and beauty are not mutually exclusive.
Colin Judge was born with one arm and no legs, and today he is a Paralympic table tennis player, speaker, and analyst living in Dublin.

Nick Dempsey is an Australian disability advocate, motivational speaker, and content creator whose life changed dramatically after a diving accident on his 21st birthday left him with a spinal cord injury and quadriplegia. While celebrating with friends at his parents’ home, he misjudged a dive into a shallow backyard pool, dislocating his neck upon impact.
"Just after talking about how good my mates are, they broke my neck and then went down to the pub..."
Nick has since become a powerful voice in the disability community. He shares his journey candidly on platforms like TikTok and through his podcast “Chats From A Chair,” where he explores life with a disability and broader issues of representation and accessibility.
In an episode of the ListenABLE podcast, Nick discussed his lived experience and the innovative solutions he’s developed to maintain independence—including an adaptive drinking glove he designed himself. After developing her disability in adulthood, Tayla was diagnosed with Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome, leaving her muscles to be weaker after they're used, sometimes resulting her to enter periodic paralysis for 2-3 hours at a time.

At the age of two after being at the hospital at “the wrong place wrong time” Ross Chaplin obtained a "bug" called Guillian-Barré Syndrome leaving him Hemiplegic, no use of his right leg and minimal use of his left arm, and therefore a full and vibrant life on crutches.
Ross is a strong advocate for equality, inclusive design, accessibility as well as the language around disability. Creating property solutions that align an organisation’s current and future requirements is crucial to properly leveraging the resources NFPs have on hand. Ross provide strategies to drive that organisations’ services and growth as well as the detailed analysis to support the execution and implementation at the highest level. S
ince 2010, Ross have been fortunate enough to work closely with a range of NFPs who turnover over between $30 Million to $500 Million per annum. No matter the size of the organisation, the business model must drive the property strategy, not the reverse.
Ross is also a sought after keynote speaker on topics of Resilience as a Person with Disability and Diversity & inclusion. Not only does this episode break down barriers, it busts down the bosses door!

When Paul Harpur was hit by a train he lost his eyesight. Already feeling that "teenage boys don't wanna stand out for the wrong reason", sport not only became a community for Paul but lead him to representing Australia in Goalball in the Sydney 2000 Paralympics and a world record in Athletics at the Commonwealth games where he ran the "Time of his life".
Now working with the Hon. Minister Jason Clare for Education on the University's Accord Reform., Paul's mission stands with helping students with disability not only get equality and access to their education but also to train lecturers, professors, and teachers how to support their students in the classroom by providing the correct resources.
Paul is an Professor at the University of Queensland Law School, an Academic Fellow at the Harvard Law School Project on Disability, an international distinguished fellow with the Burton Blatt Institute.

Believing she had Gastro, 23 year old Jade Harrington was reluctant to go to hospital, but as her symptoms got worse she was directed through to Emergency and placed in an induced coma for 9 days from Septic shock. Jade decided to have her feet amputated below the knee after realising she was watching them slowly "die" in front of her.
Jade takes the title of "Newest guest to the disability community" coming on our show & recording just over a month after her amputations. Jade talks about her experience with new disabilities as she is still figuring out what it means to be "disabled", the concerns for her relationships and how she currently views her body as she learns to understand her new self.

After attending the Sydney 2000 Paralympics there was no turning back for Sarah Rose, she had found her passion in swimming, a place that created an even playing field in a world that didn’t present her with the same opportunities as everyone else.
Sarah, who is four foot two, describes how swimming gave her a sense of purpose at a time when she didn't think she should be "proud" of her disability. After 23 years, Sarah has represented her nation both as an athlete and as a current member of the Paralympic Committee for the upcoming 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane, where she will be advocating for representation and employment. She is also getting ready to publish her first book and has become a media star on some of the most-watched shows in Australia as well as host a podcast where she interviews some big names.
Sarah also opened up to ListenABLE about her personal journey with IVF, choosing to screen for her disability and what it means to be a mum with Dwarfism both emotionally and physically.

Alison's life changed overnight when she couldn't feel anything from the waist down. After being diagnosed with a 'bad cold', her symptoms became worst, soon discovering she had Transverse Myelitis, 'an inflammatory disease of the Spinal Cord'.
With Alison now to become a full time Wheelchair user, it presented an opportunity to reflect on her career as a nurse and broaden her perspective of what support could look like in the in not only the medical community within her own town but within her own family.

“I would love to share my story on ListenABLE so that others can see that life doesn’t end just because you have a disability and really, life gets better because of it. I am a better wife, mum, friend and employee because of my disability”. Overcoming the previous stigma and representation of what it means to be disabled, Alison speaks about her current road to acceptance of her own disability and how her attitude has created a ripple effect to not only the people she loves most but her own community.

2 in 5 women with disability in Australia have experienced physical/domestic violence after the age of 15.
That's 1.2 Million Australian's with disability who don't have the correct resources or support to get the help that they need compared with 1.7 million without. Founder of 'Sitting Low, Reaching High' and disability advocate Mel Harrison helped a service open the first refuge for women in New South Wales in March 2021 to help curb this statistic.
Having a Spinal Cord Injury since she was 14 and being diagnosed as Hard of Hearing since she was 25, Mel pushes her limits travelling Australia, as the first Wheelchair User to compete in the 'Shit Box Rally', raising money by driving and camping across the Outback with very limited resources.

"Why the Shift 20 Initiative would have changed my life" - Dylan Alcott
Growing up, one thing I struggled with when I turned on the TV, the radio, or picked up the newspaper, was that I didn’t see or hear anybody like me. I saw non-disabled people. The only time I saw people with disability was as a result of a tragic car accident – the person looking sad and helpless in a wheelchair, deterring you from speeding. I used to believe this stereotype was my destiny in life – and it used to break my heart.
For nearly one in five Australians, this is the reality they still live with almost every single day. Because despite there being almost 4.5 million Australians living with disability, we are only represented in one percent of global advertising. One percent.
But with almost 20% of our population living with some form of visible or invisible disability, we make up a significant percentage of the consumer market. We’re eating at Maccas, we’re getting rideshare, we’re wearing undies, we’re opening bank accounts and we’re washing our hair – but right now we can’t see ourselves, and are left out when it comes to representation in advertising.
When it comes to inclusion of people with disability, advertising done properly is listening to those people’s lived experience, but also understanding the massive opportunity of having representation of the whole population in your brand’s work. Being more inclusive for customers is not just the right thing to do, it’s good for business, with recent research by TRA, showing a commitment to representation to be not only socially beneficial, but also economically, with 49% of respondents more likely to purchase from brands showing fair representation for people with disability. In short; when people living with disability see people who look and sound like themselves, not only are they more likely to buy the product or service being advertised, but so too are those around them – mothers, fathers, siblings and friends, who have also been impacted by disability.
We really wanted the inclusion of people with disability to become the norm, which is why, working alongside thirteen of Australia’s most prominent brands, we’ve founded the Shift 20 Initiative.
The Shift 20 initiative demonstrates the importance of visibility on-screen, by encouraging brands to commit to fair representation of disability. Initially, we’re changing a scene within ten of our founding brand’s current ads to include a person with disability, but we hope to go far beyond that, providing resources and consultancy for brands on how to be more inclusive long term. This is all whilst providing opportunities and opening doors for people with disability to be themselves and see themselves on screen, creating employment pathways for people with disability both on-screen and behind the camera.
Seeing people like me on TV would have changed my life, and that’s what is so powerful about this initiative. The talent are not famous people with disability, instead, they’re ordinary people doing ordinary things; eating breakfast, brushing their teeth, going to work and buying insurance.
We hope working in the way we have, valuing the skills and talents of those with disability in the same way we would anyone else, and partnering with the brands who are approaching this with such enthusiasm, we can shift perceptions when society thinks of people with disability. We want people to not only think of gold medal Paralympians or someone in an accident to pity. Instead, we want everyone to see normal people just like them. We want non-disabled kids to watch these ads and see someone with a disability as their equal, and not lesser than. Hopefully, on a wider scale, this will encourage everyone to have a different perspective, so you might then hire someone in your business with a disability or see someone in a bar who is blind or deaf and ask them on a date.
The thing we’d love Australia to learn out of this campaign is that we as people with disability, we shop, we eat, we travel, we work, we’re great talent, we’re just normal people. But only when given the opportunity to be ourselves.

Rory Douglas came back from a holiday in QLD with his partner and two teenage boys when a headache on his arrival back home in Melbourne went from an ear infection to Meningitis to collapsing and being found unresponsive.
Three weeks later he woke from a coma blind with no perception of light and shade and ten years on joined Dylan Alcott and Angus O'Loughlin on the ListenABLE podcast to speak about his life without vision, the assistance of a guide dog and his life and career with disability.

After having his leg amputated due to cancer, James Parr had to first cope with his own internalised ableism before changing the perceptions of his friends and his ever-expanding social communities.
This included a recent Instagram post involving being asked to travel to Paris to meet a person with a fetish for amputees. James challenged those who responded to the post "Gross" as they weren't saying the offer was but that someone finding his disability sexy were.

We started these episodes as a way for Dylan and Angus to exit the conversation and allow natural language and conversation to flow from individuals with similar experiences. How can Dylan and Angus know what it's like to have an iPhone at school when they were playing snake on their Nokia's.

Daniel O'Brien is an international Powerchair Hockey superstar playing in Switzerland for the world Championship in 2022. Daniel has Muscular Dystrophy meaning he uses a Power Wheelchair and can walk for very short distances at a time. Passionate about his sports Powerchair Hockey and Soccer, he talks about how sport breaks down the barriers when it comes to the stigma around disability but also his personal confidence hoping to inspire others to do the same.
Josh Brass is an up and coming tennis star and Entrepreneur. His disability is Sacral Agenesis, in which Josh explains, "it mean’s I have no knee caps and limited movement in my legs". With already a jam packed schedule nothing is holding Josh back from achieve his goals as he believes his disability gives him the power to overcome all obstacles, even if it means rolling your wheelchair down a hill full speed once or twice.

In this episode Jaycob Campbell a.k.a Gonketa (an onomatopoeia of a ball in a spray can) tells his story of identity and inclusion when it comes to the hearing art world and why he is so passionate about the next generation of Deaf artists.
Jaycob talks about his initial resistance going into the art world and confrontation of attending a University that made accessibility difficult. Jaycob talks about his personal experience with his Deaf Identity and his connection/exposure to Deaf Culture from a young age.

Is this the most expensive sport??
At a young age Emma Booth was lucky enough to win free horse riding lessons for a year and never looked back, putting her heart and soul into the sport.
In 2013 on the way back from a competition Emma's car was hit by a truck on the Melba Highway which caused spinal injury and would change the trajectory of her life but also lead to her representing her country. Emma embarked on a new goal of becoming a Paralympian in time for the 2016 Rio Games travelling all over the world to find the perfect horse, Emma’s long journey of finding the perfect 4 legged partner resulted in a trip ten minutes down the dirt road at home.
Today on track for the Paris 2024 Games, Emma shares the highs and lows participating in the sport not only physically but mentally, the criticism of her sport on social media and the financial investment of her chosen career.

Dean Clifford has defied the odds and overcome numerous challenges to become one of the world's best weightlifters.
Dean was born with epidermolysis bullosa, a rare genetic condition that causes his skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. Despite this, Dean has managed to double his life expectancy and has become an inspiration to many and a wonder to the medical community. He talks about the challenges he has faced growing up with skin difference, including being unable to play many sports due to the fragility of his skin.
Dean's story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. He talks about his journey and how he has managed to achieve so much despite his condition.

Rushed to hospital as a child Barney Koneferenisi's parents were told doctors had to immediately amputate his limbs to save his life, not even having time to have an anaesthetist put him under. "I left the room fully intact and when I came back I literally only had a stump and a couple of fingers".
After 100 different surgeries and a decade of being in and out of hospital he sat down with Dylan Alcott and Angus O'Loughlin to talk about life as a Pacific Island disabled person and the cultural implications of being made to feel a "burden or a curse" to his family, the hilarious call he received to become a Tokyo Paralympian and how being left on the side of the road was the inspiration behind his new Start Up 'Safe Rides'.

Brittany Long has a medical condition that baffles doctors, psychologists and even herself!
Still undiagnosed 4 years on from a virus that left her mute and unable to feed herself, she walked onto our podcast stage to tell her story to the bewilderment of the crowd as she then sat in her wheelchair.
She now travels the country taking photographs of her favourite artists but will never forget the time one act called her "a f***ing miracle".

An ex-addict turned Army soldier seeking sobriety in October 2016 Lenny walked into surgery for back surgery and came out the other side with spinal cord damage from the chest down.
This story is one of redemption, and when it comes to his journey so far "I wouldn't change it". Lenny is currently sober, engaged to his beautiful fiancée, and dominating various sports at an elite level.

Tim was told he had a condition before the show began, but he chose not to disclose it for fear of hurting his chances of landing the hosting gig. "If you look at old tapes, you can tell my eyes are fairly visibly crossed," Tim said.
We discuss leaving television, making jokes about disability, and Dylan shares the moment he first saw Tim walking down the street and the friend's remark that set a path to ultimately Dylan becoming the advocate his is today.

Tim McCallum and his classmates celebrated his acceptance into Western Australia's esteemed "Academy of Performing Arts" (WAAPA) by jumping into the ocean at Scarborough Beach head first. The next thing Tim remembers is that the hands in front of him were motionless and not reaching out to save him, they were his own.
A world class singer Tim has since taken to the stage on TV's 'The Voice' being teamed with Ricky Martin and sang the national anthem at the AFL Grand Final in front of an audience of millions.

They say you shouldn't meet your heroes and for once it's Angus copping the praise from 19 year-old Seb Steel from South Australia who laced up his footy boots alongside Angus a few years ago.
Seb was involved in a forklift accident at his fathers business that saw him only 6 weeks before recording this interview decide to amputate his leg for a "better quality of life".

Despite her bubbly personality, Tayla Clement can’t smile. She was born with an incredibly rare condition called Moebius syndrome, that gave her facial paralysis and club feet. Tayla has overcome severe bullying and depression to achieve amazing things, including becoming world number 1 in her classification for shot-put. Imagine living with a disability so rare no one has heard of it. Anja Christoffersen was born with VACTERL Association, an acronym that stands for vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheal, oesophageal, renal and limb. It’s a collection of birth defects that have caused Anja to have over 35 surgeries and 150 hospital admissions in her life, including emergency surgery on her food and air pipes, bowel and bladder when she was only an infant. In this eye opening chat Anja explains what it’s like being a young woman with bowel incontinence, why she was determined to break into the exclusive world of modelling, plus she gives Angus an important lesson on the female anatomy, much to Dylan’s amusement.

Alex Noble became a quadriplegic at just 16 when he was badly injured in a rugby tackle. Before the accident he was a rising sports star, training with the Under-17 NSW Rugby Sevens youth selection squad and fighting for a NRL future. Bilateral below-knee amputee Lauren McDonough is learning to love herself and her body, but it hasn’t been easy. She’s struggled with treatment-resistant depression and PTSD since she was a teenager, and in May 2017 Lauren lost both her legs below the knee in a suicide attempt. Through her physical and mental recovery Lauren has learnt so much about herself and she’s now passionate about helping others struggling with mental health. When Nathan Borg became frustrated with the lack of characters on television who accurately portrayed his disability, he called Channel 10 and suggested a completely new character. Nathan, who is deaf and uses a cochlear implant, now plays Curtis on 'Neighbours,' Australia's longest-running soap opera. Nathan tells Dylan and Angus about being warned to give up acting when he was younger, how he can regulate what and how he hears with a high-tech app, and how the three create a master scheme to cheat on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire using Nathan's cochlear implant.

Vision-impaired runner Jaryd Clifford boarded the plane home from the Tokyo Paralympics with not one, not two, but three medals around his neck, including silver in the 5000 metres and the marathon. Jaryd ran so hard he collapsed after two of his races, and made headlines when he made a teary post-run shout out to his Dad, who passed away earlier this year. Angus and Dylan were lucky enough to sit down with Jarryd a week before Tokyo to chat about why he took up running as a kid, what it’s like running with a guide and why winning a Paralympic medal is just as good as winning an Olympic one.

Wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario has won every kind of Paralympic medal except for gold, but she’ll be fighting to change that at the Tokyo games. She first took the international track circuits by storm when she won silver at the 2008 Beijing games at just 14 years old, before moving from sprinting to distance and soon winning the 2018 London Marathon. Before his accident at 17, Jaimen Hudson’s greatest love in life was diving and surfing in the ocean. But when he became a quadriplegic in a dirt bike crash in 2008, he thought he’d never be able to go in the water again. Years later in a chance meeting Jaimen was introduced to drone photography and videography and since has taken beautiful images of the ocean and its animals from above seen by hundreds of millions of people. But he still dreamed of one day going in the water again, and in this chat Jaimen tells us about his audacious attempt to do just that, despite being unable to swim.

Dressage horse-riding, or as Dylan says "dancing with a horse", sounds hard enough.. but imagine trying to do it without any forearms or hands! How do you hold the reigns?!?! That’s what 17-year-old Abigail Vidler does with the help of some special equipment, and she’s so good at it she hopes to compete in the 2024 Paralympics. In her spare time she’s also completing her Year 12 studies, getting her driver's license (yep with no hands)… all in the middle of a pandemic. Yeah, we feel lazy too.

RJ Mitte is one of the most famous people with a disability in the world, but have you ever heard of him? Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three, he shot to global fame after playing Walter White Jr in the hit TV series Breaking Bad, a character who also had cerebral palsy. In 2013, Mandy McCracken felt a slight fever coming on. She didn’t know then she would soon lose her hands and feet and spend 10 gruelling months in hospital recovering rom Sepsis. Since then Mandy has been on a long and sometimes difficult journey learning to live as a quadruple amputee, and she now uses prosthetic limbs to walk, drive, garden and even rock climb. She’s also started a community called the Quad Squad where she connects with others in her unique situation. She’s learnt to love herself but still struggles to believe her husband can do the same.

10 Cent Tom is fast becoming a household name around the Gold Coast. The 18-year-old otherwise known as Tom Pirie has an intellectual impairment and severe scoliosis. He loves giving back to his community by collecting bottles and cans under Queensland’s container deposit scheme, and he's already collected over 300,000 of them. At 21, Jess Van Zeil felt invincible. From Bungee Jumping to SCUBA diving in South Africa, Jess was fulfilling her dreams as a mad adventurer; her future crammed with plans as a loving daughter, passionate sportswomen and student.

In September 2001, at the age of 18, Mike’s life changed forever. He contracted one of the deadliest diseases on the planet, Meningococcal Septicemia while on an end of season Football trip.
Mike’s chances of survival were as little as 5%. His family were told to say goodbye on more than one occasion as he fought for his life. He spent the next 6 months in hospital where he was given the sobering news that it could take years to achieve even the most basic tasks, such as walking and driving, as well as the devastating realisation that sport may not be a possibility.

In this weeks episode of ListenABLE Dylan Alcott and Angus O’Loughlin talk to Emmah Money who is living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). When she was born she was not expected to live beyond her fifth birthday and doctors suggested the lung disease caused by CF would progress quickly and soon take her life.
But Emmah has proven from an early age that she was going to be someone who would defy the odds against her – a valuable lesson she learnt from her adoptive parent’s right from the moment they brought Emmah home and into their family.
Over the years Emmah has lost many of her close friends to the devastating effects of this disease, but this has not diminished her absolute resolve to be part of the cure that she hopes will one day improve and save her life, and the lives of so many others in the community.
And now, Emmah has an even greater reason to work toward that goal – her two beautiful children, Ayvah, meaning "breath of life", and little Logan.
Emmah is very aware that the average life expectancy for someone living with cystic fibrosis is just 38 years, less than ten years from her current age. But for someone who has proven they are anything but average, she is doing everything she can to beat these odds as well.
