The leadership podcast for people who are in leadership not for the status and power, but instead to use that status and power to make a way for others to realize their full potential.
Hosted by Teri Schmidt, Leadership Coach & CEO of Stronger to Serve Coaching & Teambuilding.
Each week we focus on supporting new and mid-level leaders who are dealing with the overwhelming realities of transitioning into roles where their success isn't just defined by their performance, but by the performance of their team.
Roles where they are responsible for building trust, promoting psychological safety, conflict management, taking care of their team member's wellbeing, motivating other humans, and managing up, all while trying to GET THINGS DONE.
Through solo episodes with focused and relevant leadership tips and inspirational interviews with seasoned leaders and experts, we help leaders get past their overwhelm to careers of courageous impact.
Listeners hone their skills in making their workplaces more compassionate and just through their leadership.
To celebrate our 200th (!) episode, we're revisiting some of our favorite conversations from the last 100 episodes.

Agility is one of today’s favorite leadership buzzwords, but too often it gets reduced to simply moving faster.
In this episode, we go beneath the buzzword to explore what true agility really means: the ability to adapt wisely and steadily in the face of uncertainty.
Drawing on Gallup’s latest global research, we’ll look at why hope is now the number one thing people need from their leaders, and how stability and adaptability can actually fuel that hope.
You’ll hear how leaders can calm their own stress responses, hold space for multiple futures, and model steadiness that sparks possibility, even in the middle of change fatigue.

Who has time for reflection in today's economy? Isn't the best mode of working these days to put your head down and don't look up until the work's done? Who has time to worry about that stuff like values, your personal why and getting to know the people on your teams?

Our guest for this episode, Inez Ribustello, provides a unique perspective from an industry that we haven't yet talked about and she has an incredible story of passion, tragedy, and grit to share with us.
But in the end, you'll see the leadership lessons that she has to share are not just applicable in the food and beverage industry. They apply to any leadership experience in which you are engaged.
About InezInez Ribustello got her start in the world of food and wine after moving to New York City from her home state of North Carolina. Her wine career took a huge leap forward when she became an Assistant Cellar Master at Windows on the World in One World Trade Center. In a very short time, she was promoted to Beverage Director.
After losing her job and her work family on 9/11, Inez chose to eventually move back to her hometown with her fiancé Stephen. Together they opened their own restaurant, wine bar and retail store called On the Square.
Inez' next big venture was Tarboro Brewing Company, a microbrewery that began operating in 2016. Almost a year later, she and her husband opened a satellite taproom in a neighboring town. Stephen and Inez have two children that they absolutely adore.
In September of 2021, Inez self-published her memoir Life After Windows, a book she wrote chronicling her journey from North Carolina to Manhattan.

Are you a leader who cares about serving others, especially those who have served your country?
With our guest, Shelly Rood, we begin by talking about how to honor and work most effectively with those who sacrifice so much for us, those who serve in our armed forces. Hint: It goes way beyond (but doesn't take much more effort than) saying "thank you for your service."
We talk about the different military cultures and the values that make former military members stellar employees. If you lead someone who served you'll leave with new leadership insights.
Our conversation then broadens to topics that are important for any leader:
Trigger warning: We do briefly discuss suicide statistics and abuse. Please take care of yourself and come back to this episode at a different time if needed.
About Shelly
From being overseas and leading covert intelligence briefings to orchestrating security programs for nearly 4,000 soldiers, our guest Shelly Rood knows first hand what it means to protect and care for others. Through Others Over Self®, Shelly and her team are dedicated to serving others by providing training that connect people through shared life experiences and deepen interpersonal skills, all while celebrating our nation’s heroes.

The fact is that, especially in current times, leaders will not be successful unless they possess a good amount of emotional intelligence. When you're on a team with an emotionally intelligent leader, it has a positive effect not only on your well-being, but also on the team's performance.
Luckily, as parents, we have many opportunities to develop and practice emotional intelligence.
Our guest today, Christina Mattison, supports women leaders in a place where we don't typically think of emotional intelligence being developed, the military.
During our conversation, she shares her story, the benefits of heart-centered leadership, and the practices that you can start today to develop this critical leadership competency.
About Christina
Christina Mattison is a Heart-Centered Leadership Coach and 500-hour certified yoga teacher. Her experiences as an Air Force officer and military spouse led her to create the Strong and Resilient Woman community – a space for movement, mindfulness, and learning to do better for ourselves. Christina is also the creator of the Lead Your Life movement – a transformational wellness program for female leaders in the military.

Teams cannot flourish and perform to their capability unless team members are confident. But faking it until you make it will not work.
Confidence must be cultivated. Our guest, Kimberly Spencer, lays out practical steps for leaders to cultivate this confidence within their teams (and within themselves and their families).
About KimberlyKimberly Spencer is an award-winning high-performance, trauma-informed coach and trainer, Amazon best-selling author, TEDx speaker, and the founder of CrownYourself.com, helping visionary leaders transform their self-limiting stories, build their empire, stand out fearlessly, and make the income and the impact they deserve.
From her entrepreneurial beginnings at five selling bags of glitter-water to her neighbors, to becoming an award-winning screenwriter, certified Pilates instructor, Miss Congeniality, and six-time WEGO Health Activist Award nominee, Kimberly is proof that it's better to make your own mold than to conform to someone else's. She's also the former executive of a national e-commerce startup and was the owner of the private Pilates studio, Fitness with Kim in Los Angeles, CA. Have you experienced the loss of hopes dreams or expectations recently? Or do you lead someone who has? Then you're leading through grief.
In our culture of toxic positivity, we try to ignore or "at least" these feelings away. You're sad that you didn't get a promotion? "At least you have a job."
We may feel ill-equipped to support people through this grief, so we resort to platitudes like "I'm sorry for your loss."
This leads to disconnection and isolation, the exact opposite of what the griever needs.
Our guest today, International Best Selling Author, Speaker, Founder of The Compassion Code Academy™, and Trainer for The Grief Recovery Institute©, Laura Jack, demystifies leading through grief and provides simple, yet impactful ways that we can support those we lead.

Welcome to Season 3 of the Moms that Lead podcast! If you're a long-time listener, you know that we believe that our leadership journeys cycle through three phases, Ground, Grow and Give.
The Ground phase is about helping you to recognize and own your leadership strengths…the outcome of that phase is clarity. And the second phase is the Grow phase, where you hone those strengths, with the outcome being greater confidence.
We've lived in those two phases for most of the episodes of seasons 1 and 2. So for season 3, we're going to spend most of our time in the incredibly important 3rd phase…Give. The Give phase, when you connect with others, is what, by definition, makes you a leader.
After all, you can't really be a leader if you don’t inspire others to follow and develop to their full potential. I believe that is the purpose of leadership…to grow other leaders by doing the messy work of connecting with other humans with all of our emotions, experiences, idiosyncrasies and beauty. It's not easy work, but whether your developing your kids, volunteers in your community, or your colleagues at work…it can be incredibly rewarding.
I’m excited to bring you wise and insightful guests that dig into the tough people leadership topics…like how can we support our tween and teen's mental health, how to lead someone who's grieving, how to lead a team when you're building a company, how to lead in a blended family, how to select team members to build a high performance team and so much more.

Financial wellbeing is about so much more than knowing where and how you should invest your money.
Our guest today, author, speaker, and advisor, Michelle Arpin Begina believes that it all starts inside and you have what you need to succeed and thrive in terms of your financial wellbeing…it's just a matter of doing the introspection and reflection on your past experience. Like so many things in leadership, it starts with knowing your values.
Not only do we discuss tips for doing that introspection and defining what Michelle calls your unique success formula, but we also talk about:
• What it means to be wealthy
• Why financial wellbeing is important for leaders
• How we can help our children have a good relationship with money

About MichelleMichelle’s earliest memories from childhood all relate to money. And yet, the
stories and lessons learned from different branches of her family tree couldn’t be
more dichotomous! Michelle has used the money lessons from her life to rethink
how financial advisors and their clients have traditionally worked together. Rather
than thinking of her role as a gatekeeper of portfolios, she sees real value in
being a gateway to personal financial freedom. To support her clients on their
unique wealth journeys, Michelle is a technician of financial planning, investment,
and wealth management. But what differentiates Michelle from other financial
advisors is that she has spent the last two-plus decades studying the unconventional,
non-financial aspects of life satisfaction, financial therapy (it’s a thing),
behavioral bias, choice, and decision advising.
She believes we all need to examine the money stories, scripts, and lessons that
affect our financial psychology so that we can rethink what we know about money
to have more of it. Michelle lives in Wyckoff, NJ with her husband, Mike and sons,
Alex and Nick. She is an avid photographer – her sons are her favorite subject!

Why do talented women all over the world doubt that they are leaders?
What are our communities missing out on as women self-select out of leadership opportunities, harming their career wellbeing?
We answered these questions with Dr. Tara Schwegler and also talked about:
About TaraTara Schwegler is a cultural anthropologist, writer, professor, and entrepreneur on a mission to get more working moms into leadership positions. After earning her PhD from the University of Chicago, she worked in the academic and corporate sectors, where she experienced firsthand the challenges of balancing family with leadership aspirations. She has published widely in major academic journals and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she teaches classes on women’s leadership, the anthropology of food, and any other fun topics she can dream up! In addition, she is the co-founder of RedSquared Consulting, a women-led customer experience consulting firm that advises corporate, non-profit, and municipal clients on how to enhance their customer experience with insights.
Having adapted to changing life circumstances throughout her career, Tara is an expert in rethinking career paths and moving forward, even when the path isn't clear. She recently completed a book manuscript, Set Up to Fail: Why Women Lean Out and What We Can Do About It, which argues that the gender leadership gap is the product of outdated cultural assumptions about work. Episode AKA "Yes, You CAN Lead with Baby Barf On Your Sweater"
You don't have to change who you are (or how much laundry you got done last week) to be an effective leader. We need you to lead now, just as you are.
In my conversation with Sarah K. Peck of StartUp Parent and host of the StartUp Parent Podcast, we dig into this truth as well as:
About Sarah:
Sarah K Peck is the founder and CEO of Startup Parent and the host of The Startup Parent Podcast, an award-winning podcast featuring women in entrepreneurship, business, and parenting. She runs The Wise Women’s Council, an annual leadership program for women to come together honestly while navigating the challenges of working and parenting.
Sarah’s professional career started in environmental psychology and the design of environments. She pursued a Bachelors of Arts in psychology and a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Design. She worked as an associate on international design projects of the built environment before charting out a path in media and communications to help change the way we talk about the world around us and how it influences our behavior and wellbeing. In 2011, Sarah began consulting with Y-Combinator backed startups, and launched her own consultancy in 2013. Today, she’s the CEO and founder of Startup Parent, a company focused on the narratives we share (and the ones we don’t share) about work, parenting, and motherhood.
Sarah is also a 20-time NCAA All-American swimmer and has successfully swum the Escape from Alcatraz nine separate times, once doing the swim totally naked as way to raise $33k for charity: water. Her writing and work have been featured on Forbes, Inc, Fast Company, The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, and more. She lives in New York City with her family.

As parents, our most important leadership role is at home.
But sometimes it's easy to forget that. The rush to get everyone fed and where they need to be on time or the desire to spare our kids the pain of failure leads us to take leadership shortcuts. We take over, do things ourselves...in order to make sure it's done right and efficiently. In doing so, we limit our kids' abilities to develop into leaders themselves.
In today's conversation with former prosecutor turned parenting coach, Christy Keating, we discuss strategies for raising our kids to be the future leaders the world needs (and we have a bonus conversation about what Christy calls "extreme leadership": how to find what fulfills us in any job).
About Christy:
Christy Keating is the founder and CEO of The Heartful Parent. Christy loves helping parents find more love, joy, and connection in their families and with their children by helping them discover newfound energy in their parenting, develop an appreciation for what they have and who they are, and create sustainable ways to achieve their vision or dream for their family.
Christy is a Certified Parent Coach® , a Certified Positive Discipline Instructor, a Certified Instructor with the Gottman Institute. She is also a long-time leader and speaker at the Program for Early Parent Support,
In addition to her work as a parent coach, Christy is a licensed attorney and former prosecutor of 20 years with an expertise in the prosecution of sexually violent predators, as well as an active member of the National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation. Through The Heartful Parent’s sister company, Savvy Parents Safe Kids, Christy offers child safety workshops, presentations, and consulting to both parents and professionals.

As leaders, we play many roles. We pride ourselves on playing them well.
But what happens when those roles are stripped away? Do we know who we truly are?
Our conversation today with coach Crystal Freie focuses on just that: Getting to our leadership core so that we can bring our whole selves to our leadership and build deeper and more trusting relationships.
As we look to our 2022 leadership development, this is a great place to start.
About Crystal:
Crystal Freie is a dynamic, motivating, and inspiring Empowerment Coach and Speaker, helping women of faith eliminate their limiting beliefs, embrace change, and transform their lives.
As a wife of nearly 20 years, mother of two incredible sons, and former corporate executive, she intimately knows the burden of stress and the struggle and frustration of trying to keep it all together while maintaining balance and harmony in life. She understands what it means to lose your identity to the roles in your life, and the profound impact that has on your happiness and wellbeing.
Through her years of knowledge and experience in overcoming personal and professional setbacks, challenges, and obstacles, she’s developed a heart of deep empathy and understanding for her clients, and a tenacity to help them break down the barriers to living a fulfilling life of purpose and meaning.
She is the Founder & CEO of C. Freie International, LLC, an organization created with the mission to positively impact 1 million women worldwide through empowering them to live as the full expression of who God created them to be and find their path forward.

Companies spend a fortune on leadership development; and rightfully so, as good leaders make successful organizations.
But did you know that some of the most important leadership skills (emotional intelligence, courage, collaboration) are forged in the experiences of being a parent? And that research backs this up?
Our guest today, Amy Henderson, one of our nation’s leading voices on the critical role of parenting and caregiving in developing the future of work.
Our conversation left me encouraged, fascinated, and eager to learn more. I hope that it will do the same for you.
About Amy:
Amy Henderson is one of our nation’s leading voices on the critical role of parenting and caregiving in developing the future of work. Amy has three kids and is the founding CEO of TendLab, where she has been working with companies and their parents’ groups at places like Salesforce, Accenture, Cloudflare, Airbnb, Lululemon, and many others to optimize the workplace for parents. As cited in Forbes for her “truly collaborative nature,” Amy also started and co-leads the Fam Tech Founders Collective, a network of over 130 founders who are solving for the needs of caregivers. Amy is now working with her team at TendLab to catalyze a movement to change the game for working parents.
A regular speaker and author advocating on behalf of the power of parenthood at work, Amy has been featured in and written for The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Fast Company, Slate, InStyle, and more. Her most recent book is Tending: Parenthood and the Future of Work .

During the past 18 months, many of us have taken a hard look at how fulfilled we feel.
As women leaders, we often feel like we have to sacrifice:
Want to be fulfilled in your leadership at work or in the community? Then be ready to make sacrifices at home.
Want to be more present with your kids? Then your work outside of the home will suffer.
Our guest today, Blake Schofield, has a different viewpoint. As evidenced through her personal story and the stories of the many women she's worked with, you'll see that it is not only possible, but critical to our future that women know that they can be fulfilled in their leadership without making the sacrifices that we traditionally feel that we need to make.
Listen, and then join us in doing the work to begin the journey toward alignment and fulfillment.
About Blake:
Blake Schofield is the Founder of The Bridge to Fulfillment, a mom of three & former corporate executive who spent 18 years in Corporate America building, growing & turning around 8 & 9 figure businesses.
Despite her success, Blake constantly found herself feeling unsettled, chasing the next job or promotion to "make it better" so she could finally do fulfilling work and be able to have the time she wanted to have a less stressful & more present family life.
After two cross country moves and increasing frustration that every job seemed to be more of the same, she finally realized that the career she was in no longer fit. Blake's personal journey through three career changes, years of seeking the right path for her life, overcoming the fear & doubt of forging a new path, & successfully building and running her own multi six figure business is the basis of the work she does everyday.
Today, Blake & her team help driven, heart-centered professional women, who are at a career crossroads, transition into more fulfilling work & have more time with their families without taking a big pay cut or starting over.

Despite being often naturally skilled leaders, women often limit their leadership potential by refusing to "blow their own trumpet" or "toot their own horn." Even though it might seem noble and unselfish to refuse to confidently share your unique value with your community at home and work, it's actually the opposite. It deprives others of benefitting from what you have to offer.
But, can you advocate for yourself in a kind and authentic way? Yes! Our leadership expert on today's episode, Mary McGuire, shares actionable tips for gaining clarity on your unique value and then sharing it with others in an authentic way.
About Mary:
Mary McGuire has built an impressive international career and lifestyle as an expert in the field of transformation and female advancement. Using her skills and expertise gained from thirty years of working with global corporations and high-performing executives, she has distilled her learning into easily applied techniques and processes that she shares through her consulting and writing, including her most recent book, The Female Edge.

We will not succeed as leaders and have the impact we long for without a strong personal and professional network of support.
But what if you hate networking? How do you build the connections that are not only good for your professional ambitions but also good for your health?
In today's interview, we talk with Ashley McManus and discover the beauty of networking and practical tips that make it easy and enjoyable (even for introverts). We explore the power of having a "Personal Board of Directors" as Ashley shares her personal story in a conversation will inspire and motivate you to develop and nurture the network that is vital to your long-term leadership success.
Show notes: http://momsthatlead.com/podcast/56
About Ashley:
With over 10 years of B2B tech marketing experience, Ashley McManus is a tech startup marketing leader with deep expertise in inbound marketing. She is really good at breaking down challenges, coming up with creative solutions and driving results quickly, within budget. She has had 6 roles to date, been promoted 3 times, and has acted as a coach and mentor to countless interns and students. Most recently, her thoughtful branding and organized approach to execution resulted in an ultimate acquisition of the tech startup Affectiva by the Smart Eye firm. She worked as the Global Director of Marketing at Affectiva for 5 years, after landing the job while 6 months pregnant.
Her dedication and marketing efforts were recognized as once the acquisition was formalized, she was promoted to Senior Director of Global Marketing at Smart Eye. In her more senior leadership role, she is now charged with driving impactful programs that get results. As she has demonstrated in the past, she will achieve this by combining strategic thinking with tactical execution, analyzing challenges and problems and identifying steps to results by being adaptive and resourceful. She is also continuously optimizing marketing processes, and is constantly looking for ways to repurpose everything done to create a multiplier effect of thought leadership content. Her strengths are showcased when she has a position requiring creativity, multi-tasking, critical thinking, management and organization.
When she is not podcasting, her favorite thing to do is design strategies for tech companies to position them as industry thought leaders. She does this by deliberately creating high quality content that resonates with their target audience and is in line with their vision. She’s a great communicator, highly effective and flexible.
Now a full time working mom of two little girls, she is passionate about building a future where her daughters will have as many opportunities as their character can take them. She also believes in giving back in the areas responsible for her early success, so she is a guest lecturer for the Entrepreneurship Sales and Marketing class several times a year at Tufts University.

Times of transition like the beginning of a new school year provide a great opportunity for a restart…to look at our leadership and life goals and check in to see how we're doing and if we need to make any changes.
But if looking at your goals sometimes leaves you feeling more discouraged than encouraged, today's episode is for you.
In this Ask the Expert episode, I speak with executive coach Jen Hope about how to set and stick with leadership goals as we in the US enter into this new school year. The conversation is uplifting and jam-packed with practical insights on how to grow as leaders and as moms, from how to select appropriate goals by starting inside, how to walk that goal back to the micro-decisions that will help us to stick with it, how to give ourselves grace and reprioritize when necessary and how to develop the habits and emotional resilience that help us to be healthy leaders and moms.

The hiring challenges in the news are real. Many have said that one contributing factor is that after facing the challenges of the pandemic, people are looking for more meaningful work.
But what does that mean? And is there enough "meaningful work" to go around?
How do we as leaders help those we lead to feel that their work matters?
And how can we, as moms, feel that even the mundane tasks that are part of our days have meaning?
Listen to find out as I share lessons that I learned on a 7000 mile road trip with our family of 6 (4 humans, 2 dogs) in a 70 square foot Sprinter van. (And yes, we are still all talking to each other!).

Not only that, but she took over a new team and new responsibilities. Listen in to hear to hear how through this she was able build trust, develop resilience, and even recover a bit from her perfectionism (something that I'm sure none of us can relate to).

She shares her passion and her actionable leadership advice as we talk about a blog post of hers that she recently shared titled 6 Ways to Work for a More Compassionate Community.

The time for courage is now. Our communities need the unique combination of leadership skills and style that only we can offer.
We've talked about courage before, but in this episode you'll get to see it in action and discover the keys to courageous leadership that you can start practicing right away. You'll get to hear from Ashley Byers, as she shares her story of how she discovered courage from her journey as a young single mom to a happily married working woman who regularly challenges herself in multiple ways (including endurance races that span hundreds of miles and multiple days!).
About Ashley:Ashley Byers of #TeamByers is a two-time IRONMAN Texas Finisher and ultra-runner, having completed two 100-mile distance trail runs and every other distance in between. As a mother, wife, and woman in the sport, she is passionate about helping other women reach their goals and is a run coach for beginners.
Ashley is a team member of Renegade Endurance, a national endurance club co-founded by her husband and is also on the Valhalla & Valkyrie Racing Team. She is an advocate for The Woodlands Chapter of Ainsley’s Angels, a national non-profit organization that aims to build awareness about the special needs community and gives individuals with disabilities an opportunity to experience endurance sports.
When she is not training, she works full time as the Manager of Marketing & Outreach for The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership. She has received certificates in Economic Development Marketing & Attraction by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and Basic Economic Development by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. She is a 2015 graduate of Leadership Montgomery County and will graduate from Lone Star College with her Associate of Arts degree this year.
Since moving to the area 16 years ago, Ashley has volunteered with numerous community non-profit organizations. Most recently she is the Immediate Past President of Interfaith Young Professionals and serves on Interfaith of The Woodlands Development Committee. She is also on the Visit the Woodlands Marketing Committee and the PR subcommittee for Memorial Hermann’s In the Pink of Health Committee which brings awareness to breast and ovarian cancer.
While juggling different responsibilities and facing challenges, she imparts a motto to others that “If she can, YOU CAN.” Ashley encourages others to step outside of their comfort zone and to dream bigger.

Active listening doesn't have to be annoying. Yes, I know you've probably all experienced a leader who came back from an Emotional Intelligence training program and started paraphrasing everything that you said right back at you to show they were listening.
But that is NOT active listening...it's just annoying. Active listening is about staying curious while you're listening to someone. It's about putting aside judgement and preconceived notions to understand the person's thoughts and emotions.
In this quick episode, we discuss what active listening is NOT and provide tips and specific questions you can use to learn, show respect and get the most value out of each conversation you'll have as a leader.
What active listening tips or clarifying questions have you successfully used? Share them with us on LinkedIn (@momsthatlead) or IG (@wearemomsthatlead).

Of all the skills that moms excel in, we think Emotional Intelligence is at the top of the list.
This is definitely something to celebrate. Research shows that Emotional Intelligence is one of the most valued skills of leaders and leads to more effective teamwork, creativity and decision-making. Not only that, but it's particularly important for leading during challenging times…whether that be a global pandemic or just family havoc caused by an Arctic Blast hitting Houston.
In this episode we'll look at four sub-skills of Emotional Intelligence, talk about why moms have unique opportunities to practice them and discuss practical ideas for honing these critical skills.

Leadership takes courage.
But, it is not always the big and loud acts of courage that change our workplaces and communities. Instead, it is the everyday small acts of courage that we as moms and leaders have the chance to take on each day.
Just like how a small stream can carve out a giant canyon over time…our small, repeated acts of courage have the potential to change our homes, workplaces, and communities…if we let them.
In this episode we continue our exploration of leadership skills and traits at which moms excel. We explore examples of leading moms exhibiting courage and dig into what is necessary to take advantage of these opportunities for courage each day.

Are you tired of all of the podcasts and blog posts talking about new year goal setting?
Maybe its time for a new approach.
If you listened to the last two episodes, you know how important that I think it is to define your purpose before you arbitrarily select personal leadership goals. But, in addition to that, I also think that it's important explore the character trait that you will need to be successful with your goals, perseverance.
We have a great story of perseverance to share today. I got the chance to talk with Melanie, a working mom to teenage boys who journeyed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in an effort to empower women. It was not an easy journey. In this episode you'll hear about the many roadblocks she faced and the lessons she learned that you can apply to the mountains (figurative, and maybe literal) that you want to climb this year.
So if you're committed to being successful in focusing on what really matters this year or if you just like a good adventure story, enjoy my conversation with Melanie.
About Melanie:Melanie is a Curves certified circuit strength training coach and facilitates the Curves nutrition program. Her passion has always centered on education, growth, and doing the inner work required to be successful.
She realizes health and wellness is about more than food and fitness. Melanie is also a certified Optimize Coach and is committed to do her best to live with virtue.
Melanie and her husband Dan live in Conroe Tx and are raising their two (grown) children Michael and William.
When not at work Melanie enjoys hiking and training for her next mountain, making healthy treats and meal prepping for her family.
You can reach Melanie at mmichaelchuk@gmail.com.

This week we're continuing the important work that must happen BEFORE you follow everyone else's advice and set goals for the new year.
We're talking about the final two steps to define your purpose so you can be confident that your goals are setting you on a path forward that makes you worth following.

Without this work, your new year's resolutions will fail.
And we don't want you to waste the time or your leadership potential with ungrounded goals.
So, listen, do the work, and let's make the most of this transition, together.

But if you're really looking for meaning and fulfillment as a leader and as a mom, it's worth taking some time to pause.
Pause to define your purpose so you can be confident that your goals are setting you on a path forward that makes you worth following.
Today's episode is the first in a 2-part series to help you gain clarity on your leadership purpose. Today we'll focus on simple questions to help you name your values. Next week we'll focus on the other two components of purpose: strengths and passion.

This year has been tough, to say the least. As leaders, we need to avoid the urge to disengage. Instead, we need to choose to dig into the experience and learn from it.
The forced slow-down and pain of multiple crises gives us a unique perspective to start the new year, focusing on what is most important.
And another call for you to get off the hamster wheel and step into discovering (or re-discovering) your unique leadership purpose and capabilities.

One of the toughest parts of a leader's job, regardless of whether you're leading in a corporation, in the community or at home, is to motivate and develop the people on a team toward a common goal.
In this episode we learn from experienced leader Shawn Overcast that it all starts with self-leadership. Shawn shares inspirational stories and practical strategies for helping those you lead to excel beyond their expectations by starting with your own self-reflection. We discuss the application of these strategies to leadership at work, in the community, and, perhaps most importantly, at home.

If you, like me, have been feeling blah lately, this episode's for you.
Motivation is tricky, especially in challenging times. The temptation to stay in bed a little longer or lounge around all day is strong.
But that will not help you to be the leader you were created to be...the leader that your community likely needs more now than ever.
So, in this episode we share 4 simple practices that can get you past the blahs and developing, leading and making a positive difference in the life of your family, your community, and in your workplace.

The 2020 school year is getting off to a start like no other.
Usually, August is a time to fill up fall calendars, buy school supplies, sign up for new clubs and sports. But this year, we're choosing between virtual and in-person learning, making sure the kids have masks and waiting to hear about how activities and schedules might play out.
How do we continue to lead with grace through this?

Whether you're trying to continue to take the next right step for those you lead in the midst of a global pandemic, trying to figure out how to lead your family through a the beginning of a new school year full of new decisions, new practices and potentially lots of stress, or if you're listening to this in a post-pandemic world and are simply in the middle of a personal leadership transition, I believe the three tips shared in this episode will help to move you forward.

In this episode, we're building on last week's conversation about starting small with habits to become a healthy leader by speaking to an actual expert in women's fitness, Lauri Mazeikas, the Ms.FitMom.
You know by now that I believe that fitness plays a critical role in our ability to lead and that fitness challenges during the grow phase of you're leadership development not only reinforce prioritization and time management habits but also result in the confidence that you'll need to lead to your potential.
But Lauri digs in way deeper, taking the lies about fitness that have been told to women head on, and giving us specific ways, as female leaders, to make fitness a lifelong daily habit that we actually enjoy and crave.
We talk about the necessity for women, in particular, to prioritize their self-care so that those they lead (including their kids!) learn to do the same. It really is the only way that we can have the mental and physical health that we need to lead, especially during uncertain times.
Lauri Mazeikas is a fitness and mindset coach for women. She is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer, a UESCA Triathlon coach, a 2x Ironman Texas finisher, and a mom of 3 kiddos, ranging in age from 2yo-14yo. She is passionate about improving women's health through changing how women's health has been portrayed in the fitness world and I know that you are going to be inspired by the stories and practical tips she shares.

Without a focus on your whole health, you will never have the impact as a leader that you were created to have.
But staying consistent with healthy habits can be challenging for busy leaders. Fitness goals, mental health routines and spiritual practices often get de-prioritized.
That's why in this introductory episode we talk about you can ground your habits in your purpose and how you can start small to succeed. Not only will this give you a little bit of sense of control in this crazy time, but it will also pave the way for you to lead to your potential in your family, community and workplace.

From the mouths of babes...
To celebrate our 10th episode, I brought on my 11 year old daughter to hear what untainted wisdom she had for us as moms that lead. Not only that, but she gives you a little bit of an unfiltered behind the scenes look into the production of the Moms that Lead podcast…I knew it was risky bringing her on.
Stay tuned for her three leadership lessons with a little bit of additional commentary and reflection by me. I learned a lot listening to her and I hope you will to.

Even in uncertain times (maybe even more so during uncertain times), prioritization and habits are powerful tools for your sanity and growth as a Mom that Leads.
In today's episode we talk about four steps you can take today to ensure that you gain some control over your time and live each day with purpose instead of going through the motions...even if, during difficult times, living with purpose simply means just "doing the next right thing."

Are you feeling disconnected in this time of social distancing? Wondering how you can lead and connect with your family and community in this crazy time? This episode is for you!
I've heard it said that crisis builds community. And I've definitely seen that happen in recent local natural disasters, like Hurricane Harvey here in Houston. But here's the thing: crisis can only build community if people step out as leaders who strive to put others' needs before their own. If, like in the Give phase of our leadership development path, they focus on using their unique gifts to connect with and serve others.
Our guest today not only exemplifies what it means to lead in a way that builds connection, but works each day to make it possible for you to do it too!
In our first ever Inspiration episode, we're talking with the amazing Sarah Aadland of Doing Good Together about simple, easy, but meaningful ways that you can connect and lead through difficult times, particularly a global pandemic and fight for racial justice.
Our conversation was the jolt of positivity and inspiration that I needed and I hope it will be the same for you.
More about Sarah:As Director of DGT's Big-Hearted Families™ Program, she creates resources for families that want to develop a kindness practice at home and builds curriculum for schools and organizations interested in teaching compassion and service to youth. Over the years, Sarah has watched family volunteering create empowered kids, more connected families, and stronger communities. In addition to her children, Sarah tends a large garden, a small flock of chickens, and a habit of mindfulness amid the necessary rituals of life.

Are you tired of hearing coaches talk to you about finding your purpose and living a purpose-driven life? Do those terms even mean anything anymore or is it just a bunch of leadership development fluff? If I'm honest, I even sometimes cringe when I hear the words and I had to think long and hard about using them on our website.
It's time to dig-in and see what the words actually mean.
In this episode we dig into what it means to "find your purpose." We also discuss why at this time (summer 2020) in particular, it is more important than ever for your emotional, mental and physical health as a leader to spend some time reflecting on your strengths, values, and passion--the three elements of purpose.
By the end of this episode, you'll have a more practical definition of living with purpose, steps to take to help you do that in your life right now, and an understanding of how doing so can help reduce stress and guide your decisions during challenging times.
