In this series, we look at Paul’s message to Philemon as a simple one: based on the work of love and forgiveness that had been wrought in Philemon’s heart by God, show the same to the escaped and now-believing slave Onesimus. The apostle’s message would have had extra force because he knew Philemon personally. Paul had explained the gospel to Philemon and had witnessed the profound result: new life blossoming in a once-dead heart. Paul knew that conversion is nothing to trifle with but that it should be honored and fostered.

How can it be New Again? When God is doing a new thing among us, it’s not so much that He’s doing something new. It’s that our turning from what we want to obedience to that which He tells us He wants in our lives brings His presence in ways that we’ve never experienced previously. God never changes. Yet we must. And redirecting our lives to match His desires always brings new experiences of His love and grace.

Who is like our God? The simple and most accurate answer is…No one! There is no one like our God. He is beyond compare. No one and nothing is like Him, and our tour through the book of Micah proves it. Micah’s prophecy is chock-full of God’s judgment on His people, but it is also jam-packed with God’s love and mercy. We see both in this book. There is God’s judgment and God’s mercy. We see the God who punishes His people for their sins is the very same Shepherd-King who faithfully gathers, protects, and forgives them. Micah’s final hymn of praise in the book declares God to be incomparable. No one is like Him.

Both your own life and scientific evidence proves that human beings can thrive even in the worst of circumstances. Even in the midst of tremendous loneliness, women and men can indeed thrive. One of the main reasons people don’t thrive during times of loneliness is the perception that they are alone — the only one. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

It’s so sad to see Christians living with little sense of confidence. Yet the Bible is filled with references to the confidence that’s given to us in Christ! I think it’s due to the absence of searching hearts in believers. Maybe this timidity also flows from a lack of conscious awareness of His presence. Though I’m sure these result in a dearth of active commitment to our Lord in our lives lived out. These make up a cycle of timidity, apprehension, uncertainty, and irresolution that only increase all of these negative realities in our lives. We’re so busy we don’t search for a growing awareness, so we’re not consciously aware of God’s constant presence with us, and we end up being fearful to really commit ourselves to Him, and others, in all we do. It’s a vicious cycle of defeat. But Jesus said, “I came that they might have life and have it more abundantly!” It’s an exclamation, not a statement too! He really meant it, yet we don’t seem to find it. As we begin this new year of 2018, I’d like to take you on a journey toward greater confidence. Whether you call it abundance or confidence, it’s the same difference. God intended us to live with an abundance, a confidence. And, as with our salvation, this confident step into 2018 will being with faith. Today we continue in week two of the this and discuss “Living by the Code”.
