The New Testament letter of James is viewed as a leading source of wisdom for those building their lives around Jesus. James writes as the pastor of the Jerusalem church in the middle of the first century as many Jewish followers of Jesus (Messianic Jews) had been scattered throughout the region of the world. This pastoral letter covers many areas of life, calling us to a serious consideration of our way in Jesus and a humble, gentle, wise response to his love and rule. We are excited to teach through it!
Our six-month journey in 1 Corinthians comes to a close as we study 1 Corinthians 15:35-16:24. We’ve already seen Paul explain the importance of the resurrection, and now we’ll reflect on a simple yet profound truth: Because of the victory of the resurrection, our labor is not in vain!
As we are hosting the MENACA conference on Friday and Saturday, we have the great honor of hearing from Pastor Ihsan, the President of Foursquare Turkey and an apostolic leader in this most remarkable country and people. The Foursquare work in Turkey is thriving in large part due to Pastor Ihsan’s steady faithfulness and courageous witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the rule of his Kingdom.
Pastor Mark Chester has been a dear friend of Chris and Jenifer for the past 20 years, as he and his wife Geri began to pastor Gettysburg Foursquare at the same time Chris and Jenifer began serving here at Mill Creek Foursquare. Pastor Mark is an excellent communicator of the Scriptures and the mission of Jesus we are all invited into. Excited for us to receive from these two wonderful leaders!
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this twentieth study of the series, "The Resurrection,” we study in 1st Corinthians 15:1-34 as the Apostle Paul brings his message to the Corinthians towards it’s crescendo. Here, Paul situations the resurrection of Jesus in historical fact and considers it’s theological applications, infusing our daily lives with joy and transforming us now towards what will be into eternity.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this nineteenth study of the series, “Spiritual Gifts and Growth,” we study in 1st Corinthians 14:1-33 as the Apostle Paul brings practical guidance towards the use of spiritual gifts within the gatherings of the church. He focuses particularly on the gifts of tongues and prophecy.
Dr. Daniel Brown is a friend of our congregation and a beloved mentor to Pastors Chris and Jenifer. Having made many visits in the past, he joins us again as one who speaks with a relational nearness to our congregation, desiring our good and growth in Jesus. Daniel has served in vocational ministry for 49 years and has been one of Foursquare’s finest leaders, developing people and helping plant dozens of churches across the United States. It is a joy to welcome him back to our church!
Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this eighteenth study of the series, “The Most Excellent Way,” we study in 1st Corinthians 13:1-13 as the Apostle Paul gets to the heart of his discipling message with the Corinthians: the way of love modeled to us by Jesus. Here, we ruminate on love’s true nature and the fullness love brings to us, both now and in the coming new world.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this seventeenth study of the series, "Many Parts, One Body,” we study in 1st Corinthians 12:12-31 as the Apostle Paul seeks to help his Corinthian friends understand and live in the importance of both the unity of participation of the local church and the supernatural gifts/graces God gives us to grow us towards each other and into a mature representation of Jesus.
We have the wonderful opportunity to host Pastor Phil Manginelli as our guest speaker this Sunday in our services. Many among us are familiar with Phil from his six years on our staff as youth pastor, while others have heard him over the years as a regular guest. Phil and his wife (Emily) planted and pastor The Square Church in a suburb of Atlanta. Sent out of Mill Creek Foursquare 14 years ago, they formally launched their congregation 12+ years ago and it has thrived in reaching people with the life and ways of Jesus.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this fifteenth study of the series, “The Lord’s Supper,” we study in 1st Corinthians 11:17-34 as the Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthians on their practice of the Lord’s Supper. He offers clear correctives for their presumptuous attitudes and invites them to examine their lives before God as they receive this meal in remembrance of the death of Jesus.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this fourteenth study of the series, “Let’s Go To Church!,” we study in 1st Corinthians 11:2-16 as the Apostle Paul begins his address of the Corinthians gatherings of worship. He focuses on the behavior of men and women, husbands and wives, regarding head coverings and what they represent for these followers of Jesus.
As we study 1 Corinthians 10, we find Paul concluding his third section of the letter, which involves the issue of eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols. Providing the Corinthians with direction for making decisions of ethical ambiguity, Paul’s exhortations are powerful, practical, and remain relevant 2000 years later.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this twelfth study of the series, “Run to Win the Prize,” we study in 1st Corinthians 9:1-27 as the Apostle Paul continues to answer the questions the Corinthians have sent to him. In addressing food sacrificed to idols, Paul illustrates many ways in which his ethic of love and formation in Jesus is to lead self-important Corinthians to yield their “rights” in order to seek the well being and growth of others within their community.

Here, he addresses food sacrificed to idols and an ethic of love that equips us with the discernment needed when facing disputable matters.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this tenth study of the series, “Calling Over Circumstances,” we study in 1st Corinthians 7:17-40 as the Apostle Paul continues to answer the questions the Corinthians have sent to him. He calls each to live as a follower of Jesus within whatever circumstances God has called them to himself, whether slave or free, married or single or widowed. Here we learn that all spaces hold the potential for holiness and that a life of singleness holds great potential for the purposes of God.
Pastor Chris celebrates Resurrection Sunday 2026 with a teaching tracing the whole narrative of Scripture, which anticipates and then details Jesus arrival, ministry, teaching, death and resurrection. In him, the promise of renewal and resurrection awaits all who trust in his work on our behalf.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this ninth study of the series, “Marriage, Sex & Singleness,” we study in 1st Corinthians 7:1-16 as the Apostle Paul begins to answer the questions the Corinthians have sent to him. He tackles their false notions of abstinence within marriage, briefly addresses those who are singled or widowed, and addresses marriage challenges that can lead towards separation and divorce.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this eighth study of the series, “What Story Guides Our Lives?,” we study in 1st Corinthians 6:7-20 as the Apostle Paul finishes addressing both the issues of greedy lawsuits between Corinthians Jesus followers and the problem of sexual immorality among them. Here, we learn that what we do with our bodies in response to Jesus matters greatly and heed the call to flee sexual immorality.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this seventh study of the series, “Judge & Jury,” we study in 1st Corinthians 6:1-8 as the Apostle Paul addresses the lawsuits that exist between those participating in the congregation in Corinth. Paul speaks plainly about how to consider approaching a dispute and maintaining our witness of Jesus in the midst of the justice systems of this world.
Pastor Andrew Yi brings us Part 6 in our Corinthians series. The Apostle Paul wrote two significant letters in the New Testament to the church in Corinth he helped to start in 50 AD. He lived with them for 18 months, developing relationship and teaching them the way of following Jesus. During his stay in the city of Ephesus, roughly 4 years later, Paul received troubling news of what was transpiring in Corinth, and he wrote the letter we call 1st Corinthians in response. We will spend winter and spring studying this epic letter where Paul offers practical solutions to real problems within the lives of those who made up the church in Corinth.
As we turn to 1 Corinthians 4, we see Paul conclude the first section of his letter. Eagerly and passionately, he shows the Corinthians what it means to be a true follower of Jesus. Studying this chapter, we discover that the practical implications of this section remain important for us today.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this fourth study of the series, “The God Who Makes Things Grow,” we study in 1st Corinthians 3:1-23 as the Apostle Paul continues his address of the challenges present within the Corinthian congregation. Here, we understand God desires to grow both individuals following Jesus and congregations as his “temple,” a people for his presence in a place.
We have the privilege of hosting one of Chris and Jenifer’s friends through all their years in ministry. Pastors Abe and Stacey Pfeifer were at college with Chris and Jenifer and have remained relationally engaged with them for 30+ years of life and ministry leadership. Pastors Abe and Stacey have been leading New Life Church in Frederick, Maryland since September 2016. After 15 years of ministry in Colorado and Oregon, they felt a clear and compelling call from God to plant roots in Frederick. With hearts full of passion and vision, they are committed to reaching the people of Frederick County and seeing the region transformed by the love and power of Jesus. Here, we understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit as enabling us to understand God and renew our minds for God’s purposes in the world.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this second study of the series, “When Disagreement Becomes Disunity,” we study in 1st Corinthians 1:10-31 as the Apostle Paul begins his address of the challenges present within the Corinthian congregation. Here, we see how easily outside agendas can seek to disrupt our peace and unity and compromise our collective witness of the crucified and resurrected Jesus.
Pastor Chris commences our teaching series entitled “1st Corinthians: Practical Answers to Real Problems.” In this first study of the series, “Trouble with a Capital T,” we study in Acts 18 of Paul’s initial visit to Corinth and the beginning of the church. We then study Paul’s introduction of the letter in 1st Corinthians 1, where we learn that the church is the sanctified people of God called to holiness and that we, as followers of Jesus, have not quite yet arrived to becoming all that the Lord intends for us to be.
Pastor Chris and Connie Seguin lead us through our 2025 financial report as we continue our fiscal transparency and accountability with one another. After walking us through the report, we hope to have time to share the excitement of our present moment and near future.
Matt’s journey of faith began early, growing up with a father who was a Messianic rabbi, which instilled in him a deep passion to see the Jewish people — and the nations — come to know Yeshua (Jesus) as Messiah. After earning his B.A. in Religion from Nyack College, Matt spent time serving in New York and Maryland before ultimately moving to Seattle to continue his ministry. Since 2010, he has led Restoration, a vibrant Messianic Jewish community committed to living out the Good News in a Jewish context. With over twenty years of experience as an ordained rabbi, he continues to serve as a leader, teacher, and encourager within the growing Messianic movement. Matt is the author of Jesus Never Said Anything New (available on Amazon) and serves on the board of Jewish Voice Ministries International. He and his wife, Laura, live in Seattle with their three children.
We are very excited to have Dawn Vail speak at our services to open 2026. She and her husband, Ted, have long been leaders and high contributors towards the local and global ministry of our Foursquare denomination. Dawn has served in pastoral ministry in numerous cities where she taught Scripture and formed disciples. Her husband presently serves as the Vice President of Foursquare, which causes them to travel around the world to continue ministry in the name of Jesus. Dawn is a deeply kind and caring human, and we’re thrilled to have her among us. We’ve previously heard from Ted and now we get to receive from Dawn! What a kind gift.
Pastor Chris concludes our teaching series entitled “The Wonder of a Coming King: Advent 2025.” In this fifth study of the series, “A Righteous Branch,” we study in the book of Jeremiah as he prophesied of a king who would arrive out of the devastation brought on by Israel’s long-term idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness with the LORD. This king would be the righteousness of Israel and make a way for them to learn a faithful response, all due to the LORD’s purposes and great love.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Wonder of a Coming King: Advent 2025.” In this fourth study of the series, “Out Of Egypt I Called My Son,” we study in the book of Hosea as he prophesied of a king who would regather scattered Israel and give them renewed hearts to love and worship the LORD their God. We also read words that the Gospel of Matthew will later use to prove Jesus is the Messiah of Israel the world has been waiting to receive.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Wonder of a Coming King: Advent 2025.” In this third study of the series, “Little Town of Bethlehem,” we study in the book of Micah as he prophesied of a king coming out of a little, nowhere town who would redeem Israel and change the world. This king, of course, is none other than the Lord Jesus who continues to meet the aches of every longing heart and abide with us until he returns.
One of the greatest joys of the Christmas season in the Pacific Northwest is watching decorative lights shine through the cold and gloomy darkness. As we continue our Advent series, we look to Isaiah who prophecies of a light that will illuminate the darkness, a light caused by a coming King who will reign eternally with joy, peace, justice, and righteousness. Join us this week as we sit in the wonder of our coming King.
Pastor Chris begins our teaching series entitled “The Wonder of a Coming King: Advent 2025.” In this first study of the series, “The Blessing of a Coming King,” we study in the book of Numbers out of a unique part of Israel’s story when a foreign king seeks to curse them as they await to end the Promised Land. God turns this moment into a blessing and one of the earliest proclamations of the Messiah who would come to fulfill the promises of God.
Pastor Chris offers a devotional teaching as we are in-between series entitled “What Storms Prove.” This teaching is focused in Mark 4 where Jesus proclaims four parables/short stories with deeper spiritual meaning about the Kingdom of God. Then a storm settles on them all. Here we learn that storms can introduce great chaos to our lives, though they can also reprove that which is simple and deep within us: God is good and present.
We have the privilege of ordaining Pastors Mark and Andrew while we have our District Supervisor Steve Mickel with us. He will share a wonderful teaching that will be sure to aid and galvanize us towards response in Jesus.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God.” In this twenty-fifth study of the series, “The Death of Moses,” we study in the book of Deuteronomy and focus on a moment of Moses proclaiming the way of the LORD to Israel as well as the conclusion of the Torah as Moses dies. Here, we consider the ways Moses points to Jesus, and through Jesus, made his way into the Promised Land.
The entire Bible creatively and consistently points to the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week, we will study how a snake on a stick shows us the power and necessity of believing in and submitting to Jesus Christ as our Savior.
As we turn to Numbers 20, we read the story of one of Moses’ worst moments. The Lord had shown himself faithful and powerful time after time, and yet Moses proudly and angrily chose to take matters into his own hands. How do we steward our moments of frustration in a way that recognizes the moment while also surrendering our emotions and understanding to the Lord?

Here, we see how easily ambition can give way to human brokenness and our need to embrace humility in all things.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled "The Life of Moses: A Friend of God.” In this twenty-first study of the series, "Fear & Failure,” we study again in the book of Numbers and focus on the spies being set to investigate the land promised Israel. Through their negative report, fear grips Israel and keeps a generation from fulfilling God’s desired purposes for them.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this twentieth study of the series, “In The Wilderness,” we move into the book of Numbers and focus on several episodes of struggle for Israel after beginning their trip to the land promised their ancestors. Here, we acknowledge our own propensities to struggle with matters and ask the question of how our own grumbling may keep us from the peace Jesus wants to give us.
Pastor Chris made a last-minute decision to take a break from our current series to address the heaviness of our cultural moment. He encourages us to find refuge and encouragement in scripture, to refuse the easy cultural response of despair, hatred, and vengeance, and to remember that we walk with a God who has overcome evil in all of its forms.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God.” In this nineteenth study of the series, “Living With A Holly God,” we investigate the book of Leviticus and hone in on Leviticus 9:15-10:11 as Aaron and his sons begin their ministry as priests. God’s presence now dwells among Israel in the Tabernacle and his holiness is not to be taken for granted. As he lives with his people, his desire is to bless them.
We continue our study of Moses by looking at the building of the Tabernacle, one of the most important and meaningful building projects in history. Though we live in a different context, this story is both instructive and encouraging for us. Jesus is building his church, and we are invited to help!
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this seventeenth study of the series, “Show Me Your Glory,” we investigate Exodus 33-34 as Moses intercedes for Israel after breaking covenant with God. During this moment, Moses asks the LORD to show him his glory, through which God reveals more of his name and character.
Many of us are familiar with the feeling of suspense and dissonance that occurs after sin. We confess and repent, knowing that we are forgiven, but we might still wonder about our future. Is there reconciliation? Is there restoration? Is there hope? In Exodus 33, we see the Lord meet Israel in their grief, giving them (and us) hope for a better future.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this fifteenth study of the series, “Breaking of the Covenant,” we investigate Exodus 32 as Israel breaks covenant with God by building and worshipping a golden calf idol. Moses mediates relationship for Israel with God in keeping with God’s desire. We learn of our need to fully commit to God and eradicate idols from our lives as well as own our responsibility to mediate for others struggling in their lives of faith.

Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God.” In this thirteenth study of the series, “Confirming the Covenant,” we investigate Exodus 24 as God and Israel move to ratify the covenant established between them. Here, we learn of the covenant promise, which lends us increased understanding to the covenant Jesus has made with all who believe upon him and know relational peace with him.
What does it mean to live in freedom? Does it mean we can do whatever we want? As we continue our study of Moses, we will see how the Lord shows his people to fully and freely experience life as he intended.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this eleventh study of the series, “My Treasured Possession,” we investigate Exodus 19 as God meets with Israel at Mt. Sinai. Here, God proclaims Israel as his treasured possession in all the earth as he brings them into covenant relationship.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this tenth study of the series, “Wash, Rinse, Repeat,” we investigate Exodus 17-18, in which we learn of Israel again facing a difficult moment in which they put God on trial. We also investigate a formative visit for Moses with Jethro. Here, we ask questions and offer prayers around how we respond in challenges and what we allow our hearts to be set upon.
Pastor Andrew continues our series in the Life of Moses with a message titled Freedom and the Wilderness. After the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, God leads Moses and the people of Israel into the wilderness. Though they have been physically freed from the bondage of Egypt, the wilderness reveals that true freedom requires a heart change.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this eighth study of the series, “Sea Crossing,” we investigate Exodus 12-14, in which we learn of Israel crossing the sea as Egypt pursues them. Through this, we investigate moments in which we feel overwhelmed and outmatched and the way God leads us through them.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this seventh study of the series, “Firstborn Sons & The Passover,” we investigate Exodus 11 & 12, in which we learn of the final sign from God to liberate Israel from Egyptian enslavement and reveal himself to the world as the God who loves his people and wants all to know him as he is. As we study the definitive action of God known as Passover, we recognize the foundational work of God here and in Jesus, who is the ultimate Passover lamb given to redeem us for God himself.
As we continue our study of Moses, we will be looking at the confrontation between Yahweh and Pharaoh. Even in a story as dramatic as this, God makes his character clearly known.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this fifth study of the series, “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back,” we investigate Exodus 5:1-9 & 5:19-6:12, in which we learn of Moses and Aaron first approaching Pharaoh and the initial response he provides to the call: “Let them go!” While Moses was told to anticipate a resistant Pharaoh, he is heartsick when more cruelty settles of the people of God. Here, we again realize how real opposition is in this world to God’s purposes and we acknowledged the discouragement we can face in moments of life.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this fourth study of the series, “A Reluctant Partner,” we investigate Exodus 4:1-31, in which we continue in the scene of God calling to Moses from the burning bush, inviting him to become a partner in what God intended for his people, the Israelites. Here we see how headstrong Moses could prove to be as he wrestled with his own story of disappointment and yet God purposes prevail for him.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this third study of the series, “What’s In A Name?,” we investigate Exodus 3:1-15, in which we learn of the life changing moment God called to Moses and revealed himself to be the God who cares about the suffering of his people, willing to use a man who thought his life had little importance. Here, we learn God’s name by which he wants to be known, the name that proves he wants to be with his own.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this second study of the series, “Who Am I?,” we investigate Exodus 2:11-25, in which we learn of a life changing moment for Moses as he identifies with the Hebrews despite being raised an Egyptian. In this portion of Moses story, we see how he makes a definitive choice in keeping with his character while also acknowledging that God’s way with Moses, while profound and important, takes a long time to develop.
Pastor Chris commences our teaching series entitled “The Life of Moses: A Friend of God” In this first study, “Misery & Midwives,” we investigate Exodus 1:8-22 & 2:1-10, in which we learn the setting and background for the introduction of Moses into the narrative. Here, we observe human injustice in the midst of God’s activity to deliver his people as we see the complexity of Moses’ situation and understanding of his identity.
Pastor Chris celebrates Resurrection Sunday 2025 with a teaching out of 1st Corinthians 15 as the Apostle Paul responds to questions from friends around Jesus being physically raised from the dead and all of what this means for those who follow him.
We complete our study of spiritual beings by looking at spiritual warfare. Although spiritual conflict is very real, as disciples of Jesus, we engage not with fear and avoidance but with confidence and assurance of victory. Greater is he who is in us than who is in the world!
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “Spiritual Beings: Developing a Supernatural Worldview..” In this study, “The Humans,” we investigate numerous places in our Scriptures informing our understand of how God made us in his image and entrusted to us the role of representing him on the earth. While we struggle with rebellion, God has sent his Son to restore us fully to our created identity and purpose.
Pastor Chris continues our teaching series entitled “Spiritual Beings: Developing a Supernatural Worldview..” In this study, “The Bad,” we investigate numerous places in our Scriptures informing our understand of those opposed to God and what he loves - that is the devil and demons. Here we understand that this evil being has intentions to corrupt and deceive and yet our God has authority over him and every space the evil one has injected his malice.
Pastor Chris begins our teaching series entitled “Spiritual Beings: Developing a Supernatural Worldview..” In this study, “The Good,” we investigate numerous places in our Scriptures informing our understand of God and angels, those who work with him towards his good. Here we’ll learn that God alone is worthy of our worship and that this story we are caught up in is bigger than we’d ever guess.
As we finish Paul’s happy letter to the Philippians, we see once again that the gospel of Jesus changes every aspect of our lives. When we submit to the rule of King Jesus in our lives, we, too, can experience true joy and peace.
Pastor Chris continues our first teaching series of 2025 entitled “Philippians: Paul’s Longing to Know Jesus.” In this study, “Citizens of Heaven,” we investigate Philippians3:17-4:9 and Paul’s exhortation to live as a colony of Heaven on earth. We are invited to rejoice, experience peace in anxiety, live with gentleness and think upon true things as we live out Heaven’s realities on our broken planet.
Pastor Chris continues our first teaching series of 2025 entitled “Philippians: Paul’s Longing to Know Jesus.” In this study, “The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Jesus,” we investigate Philippians 3:1-16 and Paul’s warning against those who teach something other than simple devotion to knowing and following Jesus. In this passage, Paul’s great passion to identify fully with the One who loved him and gave himself for him is on grand display.
Pastor Chris continues our first teaching series of 2025 entitled “Philippians: Paul’s Longing to Know Jesus.” In this study, “Examples of Following Jesus,” we investigate Philippians 2:19-30 and learn of Paul’s sending back to the Philippians their courier, Epaphroditus. We also learn of his intention to send Timothy to example to the Philippians his encouragement as to how to live out the way of Jesus while experiencing relational conflict.
Pastor Chris continues our first teaching series of 2025 entitled “Philippians: Paul’s Longing to Know Jesus.” In this study, “Following Jesus in Relationships,” we investigate Philippians 1:27-2:18 and learn of Paul’s encouragement to conduct ourselves as citizen of the Kingdom of God, following the example of Jesus as to how to walk with each other as we face external and internal pressures. We learn from the Christ hymn of Philippians 2 - as beautiful a text as exists in our Scriptures.
Pastor Chris continues our first teaching series of 2025 entitled “Philippians: Paul’s Longing to Know Jesus.” In this study, “A Transformed Perspective on Problems,” we investigate Philippians 1:12-26 and learn of Paul’s situation as he is jailed in a Roman prison. He has a hopeful demeanor and attitude, helping us to understand and learn how to see problems as opportunities for growth and developing a truer longing for Jesus and his ways.
Pastor Chris commences our first teaching series of 2025 entitled “Philippians: Paul’s Longing to Know Jesus.” In this study, we investigate Philippians 1:1-11 and learn of Paul’s deep gratitude to God for this congregation who proved to be partners with him in the work of making Jesus known to new people. In this opening, Paul illumines the contents of his prayer on behalf of his friends.

We have the privilege of hosting Dr. Daniel Brown this Sunday! Daniel has been a long-term friend of Chris, Jenifer, and our congregation. He has come once or twice a year for the majority of the past 15 years to invest among us what God has graced his life to give to others. Having planted and served as a pastor of a church near Santa Cruz, CA, he and his team planted over 30 churches in 20+ years while also having a heart for the work of the Kingdom of God globally. Daniel helped establish several of the Foursquare works in Europe and has given himself to investing in younger leaders to be a blessing to them and the congregations they serve. We are excited to have him!
We have the privilege of hosting Ted Vail this Sunday - Foursquare’s Vice-President and Global Overseer. Ted will share from his perspective of the work of God through the Foursquare Church internationally. Every time I listen to Ted, I walk away encouraged from the scriptures and the faithfulness of God through brothers and sisters all over the world.
Pastor Chris concludes our Advent season with a teaching series entitled "Fulfilled: Messiah’s Arrival in Jesus." In this series, we are investigating the first 2 chapters of the Gospel of Matthew as they detail the origin story of the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world. In this teaching, “An Escape And A Return,” we study Matthew 2:13-23, where we learn of a nighttime escape of Jesus, Mary and Joseph from Herod’s murderous clutches to Egypt and the holy family’s eventual return to Nazareth.
Pastor Chris continues our Advent season with a teaching series entitled “Fulfilled: Messiah’s Arrival in Jesus.” In this series, we are investigating the first 2 chapters of the Gospel of Matthew as they detail the origin story of the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world. In this teaching, “A Visit Of Strange Men From Far Away,” we study Matthew 2:1-12, where we learn about Herod the Great and his interaction with Magi (Wise Men) from far away to the east of Israel. Through them, we learn of surprising people included in the story of Jesus and how worthy of worship he truly is!
As we continue our study of Matthew’s narrative of the Messiah’s long-awaited arrival, we will look at the birth of Jesus. This relatively short passage is filled with all sorts of exciting details, including a virgin birth, relational stress, an angelic appearance, a fulfillment of prophecy, and, of course, the birth of Christ. Though this story is familiar to us, it reminds us of important foundational truths about God: He works with, he saves us, and he is with us.

Pastor Chris continues our study “Celebration of Generosity: Discovering & Nurturing a Life of Giving,” with a teaching entitled “Living With a Different Goal.” In this study, we investigate Luke 8 and the way Jesus teaches his followers about the potential responses in his listeners to his presence and words. As we learn to live towards a different goal with our resources, we remember that our home is heaven and that giving fosters joy.
Pastor Chris continues our study “Celebration of Generosity: Discovering & Nurturing a Life of Giving,” with a teaching entitled “Doing Good Things.” In this study, we investigate Matthew 6 and the way Jesus teaches his followers about their acts of righteousness and challenges them to have their treasure with and in him. He wants to invite us into deepening trust that displaces worry as we join him in his radical generosity.
Pastor Chris begins our study “Celebration of Generosity: Discovering & Nurturing a Life of Giving,” with a teaching entitled “For God So Loved...” In this study, we investigate John 3 and the way Jesus invites Nicodemus (and us!) to consider the offering of rescue in him. The Apostle John notes that this is all because God so loved that he gave his beloved son to bring rescue to all creation. Here we learn that any generosity we participate in is due to God’s initiation in generosity towards us.
Pastor Chris concludes our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Self-Control.” In this study, we investigate several moments from the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke in which Jesus lives with self-control while facing the opposing powers of the devil and human leaders. In Jesus, we find the Holy Spirit to cultivate his identity in us, which grows our own self-control and points all our desires towards the God who made us with them.
Pastor Jenifer continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Gentleness.” In this study, we investigate al moments from the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew in which Jesus teaches about the nature of his heart, which is gentle and lowly, and invites us to learn from him.
Pastor Chris continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Faithfulness.” In this study, we investigate several moments from the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew in which Jesus teaching about and living from faithfulness in relationship to the Father and us. We learn how the life of Jesus forms us towards being people who keep our commitments and seek to be faithful in the little things.
Pastor Chris continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Goodness.” In this study, we investigate several moments from the life of Jesus in the Gospels in which Jesus moves in and teaches of God’s goodness and how he is embodying it. As we seek the formation of his life within us, we learn with him to stop and take in the goodness of God available to us and to be transformed into those who move with good motivations and generosity towards others.
Pastor Chris continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Kindness.” In this study, we investigate several moments from the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew in which Jesus moves in marvelous kindness towards others. As we seek the formation of his life within us, we learn with him to regularly receive of his ample kindness towards each of us and to join him in the kindness available even in relational conflict. Finally, we learn to move in specific kindness towards those God puts near us.
Aiming to be faithful disciples of Jesus, we continue our study of the Fruit of the Spirit by studying patience. Though perhaps not as popular as love, joy, and peace, patience is an important kingdom virtue that is of utmost importance to all disciples. By studying Jesus’ example on earth, we see that patience can be described as waiting that is marked by sacrificial love, kingdom activity, and selfless humility.
Pastor Chris continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of peace.” In this study, we investigate several moments from the life of Jesus in the Gospels where he is at peace and ministering his peace to his followers. We also investigate numerous invitation into peace in our Scriptures, seeking to live from a place of acceptance and rest with God, others and our circumstances.
Pastor Chris continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Joy.” In this study, we continue to learn of the ways in which the life of Jesus develops in us by his abiding Spirit. The joy of the Lord in us is a strength, a gift of grace that forms in us through experiencing the faithful love of God for us. Here, we learn about contentment which remains even in our most difficult or sorrowful moments.
Pastor Chris continues our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life of Love.” In this study, begin where the Apostle Paul does in describing the way God’s life grows in us: love. We investigate John 15, Matthew 22 and make note of many exhortations in Scripture around God’s love for us and our way of love towards others. Here, we desire to grow in considering the sacrifice of Jesus for us, paying attention to others, and moving in generosity.
Pastor Chris begins our study “The Fruit of His Spirit: The Character of Jesus Growing Within Us,” with a teaching entitled “A Life Cultivated By Jesus.” In this study, we investigate how the Apostle Paul captured the growing life and character of Jesus within those proclaiming his name and filled with his Holy Spirit. Paul specifically articulates nine ways in which Jesus is revealed within and through his people. Here, we will realize that all of Jesus’ character is available to us and that this is an invitation into life with him and not a to-do list we can’t live up or from. Excited for this study with you!
Pastor Chris concludes our study “Practicing the Way: Be with Jesus Become like him Do as he did,” with a teaching entitled “Take Up Your Cross.” In this study, we summarize the concluding thoughts of author John Mark Comer while studying the words of Jesus in Luke 9 as he taught about being his disciple. We linger in thoughts around formation in Jesus, surrender to the will of God, and discovering the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven.
We continue our Book Study with Part 5 "Spiritual Fruit & Spiritual Rhythms." Now that we have looked at three important priorities of disciples, it is time to get practical. What does the life of a disciple of Jesus look like? Filled with metaphors and pictures, the Bible uses the imagery of trees and fruit to show us the nature of a life properly oriented toward the will and way of God. Pastor Mark explains that, as disciples of Jesus, we are like trees, and in order to bear fruit, we must actively tend to our own spiritual health.

However, by holding truths in tension, we realize the beautiful reality that becoming like Jesus requires both the initiating, grace-filled work of God as well as our humble pursuit of him.

Pastor Chris concludes our study “Jonah: The Questionable Prophet,” with a teaching entitled “The Angry Prophet.” As we consider the conclusion of Jonah’s story, we are faced with how we will respond to Jonah’s example and his anger over God’s mercy towards his enemies. Through this small and curious prophetic book, we ask questions of ourselves - will we side with Jonah or God? Are we at peace with God loving our enemies?
Join us this morning as Pastor Mark continues our study of Jonah with a message titled "Jonah: The Praying Prophet?" After looking at Jonah's futile flight to Tarshish last week, we will now study his prayer from the belly of the fish. Though full of poetic imagery and detail, this prayer reminds us of a simple, gospel truth: Salvation comes from the Lord!
This Sunday, Pastor Mark is kicking off our 4 week series on the Book of Jonah. This section of scripture consists of a curious and convicting little story. Though the book is no more than just a few pages, its author uses graphic imagery and fascinating details to tell the story of a prophet who tries to run from God. As we read, we cannot help but ask questions of the text. Most importantly, the text also asks very important questions of us. Join us as we start this summer by diving into this fascinating story of God’s grace.
Pastor Chris offers a Mother’s Day teaching, “A Beautiful Reflection: Mothers and the True Image of God,” focused on Scripture’s invitational commandment to “honor mother.” In walking through the wisdom of Proverbs and several stories in the Old Testament, we are reminded of the call, character and care of a mother and the ways in which she is a beautiful reflection of the image of God she carries.
We have our brand new (and strikingly beautiful) 5,600 square feet, two story addition done and ready to be dedicated to the Lord for the advancement of his Kingdom in and through us as his people. The LORD lives in us by his Spirit as together we proclaim the name and ways of Jesus. He does not live in a building, but his people. And yet…a place is important, and through place, much ministry can happen. We dedicate this new facility with this in heart and mind. We have many guests joining in our celebration, including our founding pastors, Bob and LaDonna Hasty, as well as our current Northwest District Supervisor, Steve Mickel.

In this prayer, David expresses trust in God when trouble abounds and continues to find his hope in God’s character and way towards him. With David, we learn to ask God to teach us his right ways.
Pastor Chris begins our brief study “Psalms of David: The Songs & Prayers of a Shepherd King,” with a teaching on Psalm 23. This well known prayer of trust contains descriptions of God as both a shepherd and host who moves towards us in goodness and kind love, leading us out of fear and into needed comfort when trouble is at hand. Through David’s prayer, we are invited to learn a life of trust that allows God to be our true home and hope.
Pastor Chris celebrates Resurrection Sunday 2024 with a teaching out of Mark 8 in which the question of Jesus to his original disciples is offered to each of us for consideration and response. “Who do you say I am?” Our ongoing answer to this question will determine everything else about us as we investigate the impact of the resurrection of Jesus settling this question for the disciples.
Pastor Chris concludes our study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “The Death of David.” In studying 1st Kings 1-2, we study from the final episode of David’s kingship and life, in which he passes his rule to his son, Solomon. As we conclude our series, we hear David’s proclamation that God delivers out of every trouble as we again bear witness to all the ways God keeps his promises.
Pastor Chris continues our study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “David Takes a Census.” In studying 2nd Samuel 24, we study from another episode of challenge in David’s kingship and the consequences experienced by those he was to serve as God’s representative king. Here we learn that we can’t domesticate God, but we can trust him and deal with him as David did.

Pastor Chris continues our study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “David in Exile.” In studying 1st Samuel 27 & 29, we now learn from a season in David’s life when he makes significant choices that seem out of character. David goes into exile among the Philistines and behaves in unbecoming ways for a man anointed as the next king of Israel. We want to learn from this difficult moment in David’s life as we settle into some of the tremendous complexity within David’s character.
Pastor Chris continues our study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “David & Saul.” In studying 1st Samuel 24 & 26, we continue to learn from David’s years spent running from Saul in the wilderness. Through two stories in which David embraced restraint and chose to wait on the Lord, we learn to do the same and not take matters into our own hands with ready hearts to be responsive to God’s direction.

In a specific encounter, we see David’s propensity towards anger and the evil it opens us to while wisdom intercepted his plans in the person of Abigail.

Pastor Chris continues the new study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “David & Goliath.” In studying 1st Samuel 17, we continue our introduction to David into the biblical story, one in which he is heroic through his courageous trust of God and facing down Israel’s fears.
Pastor Chris continues the new study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “A Man After God’s Heart.” Here we summarized 1st Samuel 9-15 and study 1st Samuel 16 as we meet David for the first time in the biblical story. He is described as a man after the heart of God and is clearly God’s choice as one able to lead his people. We focus in on how God’s sees us over and above the way others do while also noting that being after the heart of God involves more than our inward piety.
Pastor Chris commences the new study “David, After God’s Heart: The Trust and Tragedy of a Shepherd-King,” with a teaching entitled “Desire for a King.” Here we study 1st Samuel 8 with the background and developments within Israel that set the stage for David’s introduction, learning of God’s continual heart and way to move towards his people and the complexity of David, this primary character of the Old Testament.
We had the wonderful opportunity to host Pastor Phil Manginelli as our guest speaker on Sunday in our services. Many among us are familiar with Phil from his six years on our staff as youth pastor, while others have heard him over the years as a regular guest. Phil and his wife (Emily) planted and pastor The Square Church in a suburb of Atlanta. Sent out of Mill Creek Foursquare 11 years ago, they formally launched their congregation 10 years ago and it has thrived in reaching people with the life and ways of Jesus.
Cody Whittington is a Foursquare pastor in Belgrade, MT. He occasionally teaches Theology, Culture, New Testament, and Apologetics at Yellowstone Theological Institute. Cody is passionate about helping churches navigate the cultural landscape with the good news about Jesus.
Pastor Chris concludes our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “The End.” As we study Acts 28, we learn of the Apostle Paul’s arrival into Rome and his priorities upon entering the heart of the Roman Empire. We are again reminded of the mission of Jesus to take his Kingdom message everywhere we go in deed and word, and our need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit with the power and life provides.
Pastor Chris continues our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled “A Thing Happened on the Way to Rome.” As we study Acts 27, we learn of the Apostle Paul's nautical journey full of challenges and difficulties as he’s on his promised way to Rome. Paul remains present in chaos to minister the salvation and hope of Jesus to all.
Pastor Chris continues our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “Trial, Trial and more Trials.” As we study Acts 23-26, we learn of the Apostle Paul and the trials he faced first in Jerusalem with the Sanhedrin and then in Caesarea with various Roman governors and leaders. Through it all, Paul leans into his experience with Jesus and finds Jesus present to strengthen him as he proclaims the Kingdom of God.
Pastor Chris continues our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “Bound for Jerusalem.” As we study Acts 21 & 22, we learn of the Apostle Paul and his companions completing their third missionary journey by arriving in Jerusalem. Here, we are challenged to consider the leadership of the Holy Spirit in our lives through the ways the Holy Spirit led Paul into dangerous challenges and built in him courage.
Pastor Chris continues our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “Spiritual Powers.” As we study Acts 19 & 20, we read of the Apostle Paul and his companions embarking on their third missionary journey, finally arriving and staying in Ephesus. Here, we learn of Paul and the remarkable work God did in the region of Asia Minor. Spiritual powers are at work, but none can match the power of God resident in the name of Jesus by the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Chris continues our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “The Power to Remain Under Pressure.” As we study Acts 18, we read of the Apostle Paul and his companions arriving in Corinth. Here, we learn of Paul as a tired and weary man who, through the aid of Jesus, remained in Corinth to influence others with the Kingdom of Heaven. He resolved to only know Jesus in full surrender, authentically living with the Corinthians and sharing his vulnerabilities.
Pastor Chris continues our study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “Jesus in the Midst of Many Gods.” As we study Acts 17, we read of the Apostle Paul and his companions arriving in Thessalonica, Berea and Athens. Here, we learn of the tremendous complexity involved in following Jesus in the midst of the kingdoms of this earth and the message we carry of Jesus as both transcendent and immanent.
Pastor Chris continues our summer study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “Changes, Challenges & Earthquakes.” As we study Acts 16, we read of the beginning of Paul’s second missionary journey with his new companion, Silas. As they reach Philippi, the Gospel of Jesus reaches a well-to-do woman, a slave-girl and a Roman jailer. We learn of both challenges and opportunities and how the Gospel is for everyone.

We have the tremendous privilege of hosting my/our friend Aybars Uckun this Sunday. His story is utterly fascinating. Every time I hear it, I think…how did this happen?! And…how good is the kindness, pursuit and grace of God?! Aybars was born in Turkey, to an Afghan father and Turkish mother. After leaving Turkey, he grew up in New Jersey. His testimony of meeting Jesus leaves me in awe. Aybars served as a Messianic Rabbi for 15 years, but felt compelled to serve his own people after watching the fall of Kabul in 2021. He currently serves as the local and global Development Director of the Al-Ma’idah Initiative.
Pastor Chris continues our summer study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “Crossing Boundaries.” As we study Acts 10-12, we read of Peter ministering to a very unexpected man and his family/friends. Through this moment, we learn that no one is beyond the redeeming work of Jesus and to be positioned and ready for God to send us to unexpected places and people.
Pastor Chris continues our summer study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “The Faithful Witness of Stephen and the Seven.” As we study Acts 6-7, we encounter a difficult moment for the beautiful community following Jesus. To bring resolution, seven disciples are chosen to help restore righteous action and continue the faithful witness of Jesus. We also learn of Stephen’s willingness to follow Jesus all the way to the end as the first Christian martyr.
Pastor Chris continues our summer study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled “Miracles and Money.” As we study Acts 3-5, we learn of a miraculous healing, followed by the apostles’ proclamation of the message of Jesus and initial opposition to it. We also learn more about how beautiful this community of disciples was while also being flawed.
We have the wonderful opportunity to have our former associate pastor and dear friend, Ben Dixon, with us! He and his family belonged among us for many years until he received the opportunity to lead and shepherd Northwest Church, a wonderful and influential Foursquare church in Federal Way. Pastor Ben is a trusted voice to our congregation. We’re excited to be with him as he shares a message on God’s heart and love for prodigals.
Pastor Chris continues our summer study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “The Gift of the Father.” As we study Acts 2, we learn of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. As the Father had promised in the prophets and through his Son, the disciples received the Holy Spirit for the mission of God as witnesses to the life and work of the Holy Spirit. This continues for us today!
Pastor Chris begins our summer study of the book of Acts with a teaching entitled, “The Rest of the Story.” We begin our study with the introduction of the book, Acts 1:1-11, where we hear Luke’s account of the ascension of Jesus, the need for the disciples to wait and receive the gift of all gifts - the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Chris concludes our three-week study of the book of Ecclesiastes. Found in the Hebrew wisdom literature of the Old Testament, Ecclesiastes offers us an opportunity to understand more of the way life works, and therefore provides us an increased ability to navigate the difficult moments we all undoubtedly face. In this third and final teaching, entitled “The Purpose of Life,” we study from Ecclesiastes 3, 5, 8 & 12 as the author points us towards the fear of God.
Last year, we spent some considerable time studying from Hebrew wisdom literature in the book of Proverbs. We now want to study Ecclesiastes for three weeks. It’s a fascinating book containing expressions about the futility we often experience in seeking to find meaning and substance in life. It definitely has a point, but the author takes his sweet time in getting there. Along the way, we feel the angst of confusion the author has known while also appreciating the occasional clarity he offers.

This week we will conclude our series on heaven with a study on hell. While most of us would hold a construct that hell is the opposite and equal of heaven, the Bible offers us a reframing of thought around this construct/reality. As we’ve studied through Genesis, Isaiah, John, 1st Corinthians and Revelation, we’ve understood heaven to be about God’s immediate presence. What, then, is hell about? We’ll hope to answer that question from the Bible as we consider the ways Christians have understood hell for the past 2,000 years.
Pastor Chris continues our study on the subject of heaven with a teaching entitled, “Heaven as New Creation.” As we now land in the concluding book of our sacred text, Revelation proclaims something of a return to Eden - and yet even more! As we study from Revelation 21-22, we see heaven and earth fully reunited and a people now given to the world to testify to the rule and kindness of God in Jesus.
Pastor Chris continues our study on the subject of heaven with a teaching entitled, “Heaven as Resurrection Life.” As we now land in the gospels and New Testament letters, we learn more about God’s intentions to bring heaven to earth, delivering us from death and causing our lives to even now be marked by elements of resurrection.
This week we will continue our series on Heaven. Even if Genesis shows us that Heaven is more about God's presence than a place, we are still left with questions. What will the presence be like? What will we experience in his presence? To answer these questions and more, we will explore Isaiah's portrayal of the new heavens and new earth. Truly, heaven is a lot closer than we might think.

We specifically study Genesis 28 and a story of Jacob encountering the presence of God at Bethel, and what it helps us understand about God’s intentions to repair the breach between heaven and earth.
Pastor Chris concludes our study of the Gospel of Luke as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus in Luke 24. Here, we learn from a scene of Jesus walking with two disciples away from Jerusalem. Little did they know they were with the resurrected king of the Kingdom of God.

We take a brief break from our Gospel of Luke series to allow an old friend (and highly skilled theologian and pastor) to share with us from the Scriptures and out of his life experience. AJ Swoboda is the author of numerous books, including his well-received work After Doubt, aiding readers through a process of asking much needed questions about life and faith without having to let go of it. He contends that asking good questions and wrestling through our doubts can lead into deeper and greater relational intimacy with the God who made and redeemed us.

We have the honor of hosting special guest Daniel Brown on Sunday. Daniel has served the local church his entire adult life as a pastor, missionary and apostolic influence. Having planted a church near San Jose, CA, he began a journey of overseeing more than 30 church plants. He has spent his recent years investing in pastors and leaders around the globe. Daniel has become a beloved mentor to Chris and Jenifer Manginelli and will be sharing with Chris in our gatherings of his learnings about life and leadership in the recent years of COVID in the midst of great upheaval.

In so doing, we all are challenged by the primary question of repentance.

Originally from Idaho Falls, ID, Nate grew up in the same church as Pastor Jenifer (who was his babysitter for a few years) and developed a deep friendship with Tim & Sherry Muchira, alongside Pastors Chris & Jenifer. In recent years, he has been the Associate Pastor at Gettysburg Foursquare as he and his wife De’Sha prepare to be sent as Foursquare Missionaries to Scotland. Nate will be sharing with us his passion for Scripture and the mission of God to go into the world and bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed.

In the final two episodes of our series on Ezra & Nehemiah, we explore the ways in which this portion of the biblical narrative invites us to look both backward and forward, to the past and also to the future. In this final episode - number 25 in our Midweek series - Trevor and Jon discuss the ‘forward-looking’ dynamic of Ezra-Nehemiah: while these books clearly emphasize themes of return, restoration and rebuilding, in fulfillment of prophetic hopes, there is a consistent sense of that fulfillment being only partially realized, creating a sense of continued expectation. As Christians, we recognize that what is only partially fulfilled in the initial return and restoration will come to its fullest expression in the person of Jesus Christ. Not only do we read the Hebrew Scriptures as looking forward to, and paving the way for, the revelation of Jesus, but we also read the Old Testament ‘backwards’ in a sense, through the lens of who Jesus is and what God has done in and through him.
It’s one thing to know about God but it’s quite another to experience him personally. Many of us desire to have a real relationship with Him but feel disconnected after an incredibly difficult season this past year. What if a major source of our disconnection comes from the gap between who we think God is and who he really is? And what if who God is, is far better than we could ever imagine?

In the final two episodes of our series on Ezra & Nehemiah, we explore the ways in which this portion of the biblical narrative invites us to look both backward and forward, to the past and also to the future. Initially, in this episode, Trevor and Jon discuss the ‘backward’ dynamic which is seen clearly in the fact that the story of the Exodus from an earlier stage in Israel’s history serves as a kind of template for understanding the return from exile as a sort of “new exodus.” We also reflect on how the Bible’s own use of earlier stories and traditions might inform our contemporary efforts to understand what God is doing in the present, in light of what God has done and how God has revealed Godself already in the past.

Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “Rebuilders: A Study in Ezra-Nehemiah.” In this teaching, “Renewal and Disappointment,” we study Nehemiah 13 and the challenging conclusion to this storyline in Scripture. We learn about leadership challenges and the importance of our hearts’ responsiveness in a season of change.
In this episode, we continue to explore a central theme that runs throughout Ezra-Nehemiah, namely the tension between the distinctive identity of God’s set-apart covenant people and the ways in which God’s people must somehow interact with their surrounding culture and neighbors. In this episode, we examine moments within the narrative of Ezra-Nehemiah in which tension and conflict arise between the returned exiles and the people of the land who encounter them in the midst of their efforts to rebuild and restore. Chris and Jon discuss how these accounts unfold within the biblical narrative, and explore how these dynamics might inform our own efforts to be faithful witnesses to Jesus in the midst of what is often called a post-Christian and/or secular culture. While our situation is obviously not identical to that of the post-exilic community of God’s people in this ancient setting, there are enough similarities in our sense of identity and calling that this portion of the biblical storyline can meaningfully inform our cultural discernment and our Christian witness.

Pastor Chris shares the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday 2021. He does so via Luke 24 and Jesus walking with two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus revealed Himself in the scriptures and personally to these disciples, bringing renewed hope where devastation had rendered their expectations lost.
In the final episode of our series on the Lord’s Prayer, we continue to explore elements of overlap between the themes of the prayer Jesus taught us to pray and Pastor Trevor’s new book, The Art of Being. Trevor and Jon again build on earlier conversations in this series, exploring the ways in which the prayer that Jesus taught us insists upon both God’s sovereign power as the transcendent One who will bring about his kingdom purposes, and God’s relational nearness as our immanent Father who cares deeply about the minute details of our daily lives. In praying this prayer, we are invited to align ourselves with the biggest possible scope of the biblical story of redemption and also to deepen our communion with the One we confess to be Lord and Savior in our own lives in the most intimate possible ways.

The goal of this episode is to explore the symbolism and imagery associated with God’s redemption and the restoration of all things, as well as God’s final judgment of evil and all that is opposed to God’s purposes in the book of Revelation. Chris and Jon discuss the degree to which the teaching of this book (and of the wider New Testament) aligns with – or perhaps might help us to reframe and re-consider – popular assumptions about the nature of heaven and hell in God’s eschatological purposes.
Pastor Chris takes a breather from teaching within a series and offers this devotional teaching entitled, “Relationships & Redemption,” from the story of Joseph found in the book of Genesis. Through this dramatic revisiting of a timeless story, we gain fresh application for our own relationships in need of redemption.
The goal of this episode is to explore the symbolism and imagery related to both God’s “oldest friends” and original covenant partners, i.e. Israel, as well as the language and imagery associated with “the nations” in the book of Revelation. Chris and Jon discuss the way in which the final book of the Christian canon brings the entire biblical narrative to a fitting conclusion, in ways that are shaped both by God’s original covenant relationship with Israel and by the extension of that covenant to include all nations, tribes, and tongues.
Pastor Chris concludes our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “The End,” we study Revelation 22:8-21, through which we hear the final details around John’s apocalypse and the invitation of Jesus into new creation and the fullness of life.

Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “All Things New,” we study the first five verses of Revelation 22. In this study, we hear more of the details around the way in which God brings renewal to the cosmos, learning about a new and greater Eden and all of the promises of God to us becoming our reality.
Our goal in this episode is to build on the previous two installments, exploring the degree to which the so-called ‘rapture’ is an appropriate or helpful category for understanding the book of Revelation. Trevor and Jon examine a number of passages in the book that are sometimes understood to be references to this type of experience, but turn out not to be when read with attention to genre and context. Ultimately, we conclude not only that ‘rapture theology’ is based on significant misunderstandings of key texts but also that the book of Revelation (along with the wider New Testament) in fact speaks of something that has been more accurately described as a ‘rapture in reverse’ - in other words, the consistent vision of New Testament theology involves God’s movement toward creation, as the kingdom of God brings about redemption and restoration, which will culminate not in any kind of disembodied escape but rather the hope of bodily resurrection and a renewed creation.

Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “The Tale of Two Cities,” we study the latter half of Revelation 21. In this study, we move on from Babylon to the New Jerusalem, where the fullness of the Kingdom of Heaven comes to earth and brings human flourishing and wholeness for the cosmos with it. Here, we embrace the beautiful, awe-filled declaration of God - “I am making everything new!”
Our goal in this episode is to continue our discussion of so-called ‘rapture theology’ by investigating some of the passages in the New Testament that are most commonly assumed to provide support for the idea. Although our focus is on the wider New Testament, this discussion has implications for our study of Revelation, given that readers sometimes assume that the rapture must be an important feature of the last book of the Bible and its vision of the end. Trevor and Jon offer some reflections on passages from 1 Thessalonians 4 and Matthew 24, explaining that finding in these texts support for the idea of a rapture involves significant misunderstanding. In order to correct these misunderstandings, we emphasize that the consistent theology of the New Testament actually works against the notion that believers would escape this world for the sake of disembodied heavenly existence.

Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “The Hope Around Hell,” we study the latter half of Revelation 20. In this study, we learn that God is on a mission to get the hell out of earth. As God is committed to fully eradicate evil’s presence, he offers us the opportunity to loyally live with him now as we await the new heavens and the new earth.
Over the next three episodes, we will reconsider and reevaluate the theology of a so-called ‘rapture’, an idea that is sometimes assumed to be significant within the book of Revelation. In this first installment, Trevor and Jon begin by exploring the historical origins and the popular appeal of ‘rapture theology’, while also discussing the degree to which it aligns with the general thrust of New Testament eschatology (i.e. the study of ‘last things’). We emphasize that the very concept of the rapture is a relatively recent idea within church history and that despite its prominence within some theological systems and within North American popular culture in recent decades, there is very little support for it from a biblical or theological perspective.

Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “The Millennium,” we study the first six verses of Revelation 20, one of the most discussed and debated sections of the Bible. Through this study, we learn that God fully and finally removes evil in order to bring renewal and promises to vindicate his beloved children who have suffered in the midst of Babylon.
Our goal in this episode is to explore the significance of one of the most notorious sets of images within the book of Revelation, namely the mark of the beast, and the number of the beast. Chris and Jon begin by exploring some of the more unhelpful, yet unfortunately, common popular assumptions associated with these themes, and then seek to offer clarity with regard to the historical allusions and political commentary that are likely intended by the use of these images in their own context and frame of reference. Ultimately, what we hope to communicate yet again is that this book is not intended to obscure but to reveal; not to encourage fear or speculation about the future but rather to inform faithful witness in the present. Our hope is that we can help to demystify these images so that we can see how they fit into the book of Revelation’s consistent message, which is focused on (1) faithful discipleship instead of compromise and (2) faithful worship instead of idolatry.

Discover as Pastor Trevor answers this question through unpacking the battle of all battles in Armageddon, how Jesus finds ultimate victory through his words and ways, and the secret that the military general Napoleon learned in his last days about true conquering.
Our goal in this episode is to discuss why in what ways an understanding of the historical context of the book of Revelation can help us to understand both its message within its own original frame of reference and it’s continuing significance of Christian faith, theology and discipleship today. Chris and Jon begin by discussing how and why an awareness of historical context can be useful in understanding any portion of the Scriptures, before turning attention more specifically to the contextual situation in which the book of Revelation was likely composed and originally circulated.
Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “Subversive Loyalty,” we study the first half of Revelation 18, in which John provides more details concerning God’s judgment upon Babylon, a clear reference to the empire of Rome. Through this study, we learn of our need to resist idolatry and injustice and become/remain a very attentive people to God and his ways through worship.
Our goal in this episode is to unpack and explore one of the major themes in the book of Revelation, the notion of “conquering” or “overcoming” as followers of Jesus. Trevor and Jon explore the ways in which this biblical book portrays Jesus as the Lamb who conquers through his sacrificial death, as well as the implications for those who would follow Jesus, bearing faithful witness to the Gospel with patient endurance while resisting both complacency and compromise. Ultimately, the goal is to see and hear the text’s call to faithful discipleship not only for its original readers but also in our own contemporary contexts and situations.
Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “Babylon As Rome,” we study Revelation 17, in which John details God’s judgment upon Babylon, a clear reference to the empire of Rome. Through this study, we learn of prophecy’s immediate fulfillment alongside it’s generational application, through which we can learn a humble way today and remember that there is no empire the equal of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Our goal in this episode is to explore in more detail the language of “apocalypse” and “apocalyptic” in order to further clarify the nature and purpose of the book of Revelation. Trevor and Jon explore multiple perspectives on the concept of apocalyptic, including our contemporary cultural frame of reference, the typical usage of this language within the New Testament, and insights of biblical scholarship into this literary genre within its original context.
Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “Welcome To Babylon,” we study Revelation 16, in which John details the conclusion of the end of what we know at present - including the coming final judgment of the earth. Through this, we see again God’s justice and the role of his people in the end of time.
Our goal in this episode is to demystify the book of Revelation as much as possible by outlining the major genre categories that best fit this document within its own context, and therefore best illuminate what it is designed to accomplish. Chris and Jon begin by discussing how our determinations about genre shape our expectations as readers and influence our interpretations. We then explore in some detail why Revelation is best understood as a letter, a prophetic text, and also an example of apocalyptic literature, reflecting on how an awareness of each of these literary genres helps us to understand the book.
Pastor Chris continues our series entitled “The End Is Near?: A Study in the Book of Revelation.” In this teaching, “Conquering Until The End,” we study Revelation 12, in which John details the cosmic conflict of old impacting our experiences at present. Through this teaching, we understand our security in Jesus and our engagement in spiritual warfare from the victory of the Lamb.
Our goal in this episode is to briefly explore some of the predominant approaches to interpreting the book of Revelation, and to reflect upon the primary orientation we have decided upon for our current sermon series. Chris and Jon explore together some of the reasons that folks might be drawn to each approach, and discuss some of the potential strengths and weaknesses of each one. When we find joy in the midst of suffering, people take notice. There is a proactive proclamation of the Gospel and a responsive proclamation. Chris encourages us to not lose sight of the proclaiming power attached to responding well to suffering.
