Parenting challenging kids can be stressful, exhausting, and frustrating. Whether your child is strong-willed, spirited, explosive, or highly sensitive, you may feel like you’re constantly battling them.

Today, you're in luck if you’re looking for a simple, fail-proof roadmap for parenting challenging kids.

In this episode, I talk to Dayna Abraham, the life-changing Calm the Chaos framework founder, and creator of the Lemon Lime Adventures blog. Dayna is a parenting expert who has helped thousands of families find peace and harmony with their challenging kids.

Dayna shares her story of raising a challenging child and how she discovered the Calm the Chaos framework that transformed her whole family. She explains the five steps to calming the chaos and how they can help you build a safe home and support healthy children. She also gives practical tips and examples on how to apply the framework in different situations and scenarios.

The Fail-Proof Roadmap to Parenting Challenging Children

Dayna Abraham’s methodical approach to parenting challenging kids employs five key steps: safety, trust, calmness, proactive strategies, and defining family success. This road map ensures that parents can find peace and meet their kids where they are when conventional parenting tools have failed.

Grounding oneself, connecting with the child, understanding the catalyst and the issue at heart, and collaborating on a realistic solution suitable for a unique situation - Abraham’s model is backed by science and easy to remember, even when emotions are running high.

Dayna Abraham's Approach to Parenting Challenging Kids

Where conventional parenting tactics often lead to disconnection and mistrust, her Calm the Chaos approach liberates families from power struggles. By offering small, digestible steps, enlightening illustrations, and relatable examples, Abraham equips parents to uncover the root cause of challenging behaviors. This enables them to respond in ways that foster their child's growth and encourage family peace.

Dayna Abraham’s book "Calm the Chaos" is like a friend extending a supportive hand to parents at their wits' end. It offers a straightforward, non-judgmental understanding of even the most challenging behaviors. Her personal experiences lend an empathetic voice to parents facing similar situations. The book illuminates a clear, compassionate path towards understanding your child, honing your parenting skills, and positively moving forward.

As Dayna says, "You can do it. You got this!" Parenting challenging kids may be a daunting task, but with Abraham's five steps in her Calm the Chaos framework, it becomes manageable. Embrace the change, accept the challenges, and remember - you're not alone on this journey.

Dr. Hartman's journey with functional medicine started when he & his wife adopted their first daughter from foster care. She has cerebral palsy & countless dietary issues. They went from specialist to specialist and, even as a physician, he felt let down & confused. His daughter's health struggles forced him to confront an uncomfortable realization: Our current healthcare system doesn't have all the answers. His wife, however, refused to give up hope. She ultimately pointed him to functional medicine. His daughter & other two kids began to thrive. After years in family practice, he felt called to make a dramatic shift.

He now helps patients identify leverage points in key areas of their lifestyle & health that harness their body's remarkable power to heal and begin living the vibrant life they deserve. He has become the ‘go to’ doctor for difficult and hard cases in central Virginia.

As a clinical researcher, Dr. Hartman has been involved with over 60 clinical studies, he is the founder of the Virginia Research Center, and currently is serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the VCU School of Medicine.

In 2016 he founded Richmond Integrative and Functional Medicine.

For more than two decades, Trent McEntire has been helping people gain back their mobility – a story he knows well. Born with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, Trent experienced pain and stiffness every day from the time he was a child. The methods Trent discovered to repair his own body also became the foundation for what would be his life’s work.

Trent attended Western Michigan University where he received a BFA in Dance, requiring in-depth Movement Science and Training including Feldenkrais, Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Kinesiology and Anatomy. Trent was awarded the Presidential Scholar while attending Western Michigan University and in 2015-16 was named Distinguished Alumni for his innovations.

Upon graduation, Trent pursued a career as a professional dancer where he performed on stages throughout the country and abroad. Throughout his professional dance career, Trent continued to leverage his methods to repair his own movement limitations and also helping other professionals to overcome their injuries. Helping others is what eventually led Trent to opening his own studio where he focused on teaching movement therapy and rehabilitation.

For more than 20 years, Trent’s transformational methods and tools have changed thousands of lives for movement professionals and clients -- children who struggle with focus; seniors who have lost their balance and mobility, individuals experiencing neurological conditions; and athletes who have suffered concussions and injuries. Trent’s transformational methods and tools are now used across the globe.

Today, Trent’s mission is to deliver his methods and tools out to everyone who needs help with moving past physical and brain-related limitations. The Fire Up Your Brain program was created by Trent as a fun, engaging, and affordable way to support this mission. I get excited at the prospect of attending a new conference either in person or online. I look at all the speakers and the things they are talking about and think of all the possibilities of some nugget I may learn or ah ha moment I may have that could help my children. It is hard not to get excited, but when I first started attending conferences (real or virtual) I would be wowed with all the information and then on the way home or the after the online event ended a wave of overwhelm would wash over me. What did it all mean? How do I implement? Where do I go from here?

Eventually, I learned that if I had a plan before attending a conference they were one of the most important tools for learning how to help my child. Today, I will share with you how to maximize the value of attending a conference (in person or virtual) to help your child.

Research and clinical findings show that our children are burdened with multiple nutrient deficiencies. Unaddressed, these deficiencies continue to impair many important metabolic functions in our children and impact their health, neurologic function and in the end their ability to heal. In order to address key nutrient deficiencies appropriately, we must identify which ones are most likely in our children, what impact this has on them, why they occur in the first place and how we can fix them. On today’s podcast, I discuss the what, why and how to fix key nutrient deficiencies in our children. I also addressed this subject in a previous blog post, Top Nutrient Deficiencies Found in Our Children - What You Need to Know. Here is a snapshot of what you will learn today:

On today’s podcast, I decided to revisit the topic of digestion. Good digestion is a fundamental piece of the puzzle impacting our children's’ health. Understanding how digestion is supposed to work and what happens when it doesn’t work properly will give you clarity on what is contributing to or is a roadblock to making meaningful progress in your child’s healing. The importance of good digestion is one of the first topics I wrote about when I started My Child Will Thrive. Last week we talked about functional neurology and how it’s important to address brain function directly in conjunction with our efforts to address the brain indirectly with biomedical treatments and nutrition. Neurofeedback is one functional neurologic therapy that can help your child with a neurodevelopmental disorder like autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders.

I had the opportunity to interview a neurofeedback expert, John Mekrut, owner of The Balanced Brain Neurofeedback Training Center and a father of a daughter with multiple neurodevelopmental challenges, on the My Child Will Thrive Podcast Episode 006. Listen to the podcast for his full story and insights about the use of neurofeedback. This article outlines the basics about neurofeedback options you can investigate for your child.

Exposure to toxicants is a prominent contributor to the physiological dysfunction and resulting symptoms of many children with neurodevelopmental disorders. You have likely learned about it already, and you may already be taking steps to reduce your child’s exposure to toxicants, but what about those toxins that are already in her body? Detoxification protocols are often recommended for our children. But before you dive head first into a detox for your child, you want to make sure that her body is ready for it. To prepare for a detoxification, it’s crucial to support all of your child’s elimination channels, which are the organs and systems responsible for eliminating toxins from the body.

When I learned about the signs and symptoms of the condition, my radar went up. Today, I’ll share with you details about mitochondrial dysfunction—what you need to know to help your child.
