On this episode of the Humans of DevOps, Jason Baum is joined by Duena Blomstrom

(@DuenaBlomstrom) co-founder, CPO, and CEO of People Not Tech and the author of People Before Tech. 🗣 They discuss:

  • Human Debt
  • Psychological safety
  • What leaders can do to reduce human debt

Psychological Safety, a group dynamic in teams, is a concept defined by academics – in particular Prof Dr Amy Edmondson from Harvard – and studied by Google – in their Project Aristotle looking at high performing teams – and it has been proven to be the cornerstone of any team’s productivity. Teams that have high Psychological Safety are up to 40% more productive. The 2019 State of DevOps report "found that this culture of psychological safety is predictive of software delivery performance, organizational performance, and productivity”

Duena Blomstrom is the co-founder, CPO, and CEO of People Not Tech and the author of People Before Tech, a book about the importance of psychological safety and teamwork in the digital age. She’s also a speaker and a writer, publishing weekly LinkedIn newsletters on “Chasing Psychological Safety” and “The Future Is Agile” and a Forbes contributor. She’s the creator of the Emotional Banking™ and Human Debt™ concepts and authored a book titled Emotional Banking about fixing culture in the FinTech world and listening to customers’ feelings about money. On this episode of the Humans of DevOps, Jason Baum is joined by Lisa Karlin Curtis (@paprikati_eng) product engineer at incident.io. 🗣 They discuss:

  • How incidents can be considered an opportunity to gather context and skill
  • What leaders can do to make this mindset part of the culture of an organization and encourage it across teams? (team-first thinking)
  • Obstacles
  • How to get the best value from incidents

Incidents are a great opportunity to gather both context and skill. They take people out of their day-to-day roles and force ephemeral teams together to solve unexpected and challenging problems. Incidents can be a great accelerator. Writing code that fails safely and loudly is one of the key differentiators for more senior engineers, and there's no better way to learn how than seeing all the different ways that systems fail.

Lisa is a product engineer at incident.io - in fact Lisa was employee #2. Lisa started out as a consultant working at Accenture, before accidentally becoming a developer. Lisa loves building stuff, but is also interested in how people interact with each other in a work environment - particularly in software engineering. Having seen the ‘old way’ of large-scale waterfall project at Accenture, Lisa thinks it’s interesting to try and bring some thinking from that environment into a startup. Outside of work, Lisa loves cooking and pretty much any competitive sport (well, the British ones anyway). Voted Best 25 DevOps Podcasts by Feedspot

On this episode of the Humans of DevOps, Jason Baum is joined by Colleen Verriest, LCSW owner of Whole Heart Healing, LLC! 🗣 They discuss:

  • What is burnout
  • What are the signs of burnout
  • Causes of burnout
  • How can business leaders combat employee burnout
  • How to combat burnout

A study by Haystack Analytics found that 81% of developers reported experiencing burnout due to the pandemic. The study found that the top reasons for burnout included higher workload, inefficient processes, and unclear goals and targets.

Colleen Verriest is the Founder of Whole Heart Healing and has been nurturing change in individuals and organizations for nearly 20 years as a licensed clinical social worker and nonprofit leader. Colleen assumed several progressive leadership positions in the nonprofit sector, starting as a clinical director, moving on to a vice president role, and finally to CEO.

Colleen’s leadership is grounded in the question, “what is possible?”. Her focus has always been supporting the growth of agencies and programs, but most importantly the growth of people – those on her teams and those served. She has found that leading with compassion, flexibility and fairness has brought success throughout her career. What matters most to Colleen is leading with the heart, leading with intention, and a good dose of vulnerability.

Colleen is filled up by just “being” with her family. She loves attending sporting events and traveling with her fiancé and son, taking a run, and connecting with her ever-loving circle of friends and family. Voted Best 25 DevOps Podcasts by Feedspot
