This is because traditionally, pregnancy tests, as well as many other health-related checks, have been inaccessible.

The screen reader has for many years been an essential piece of software for people with sight loss who wish to read text that is displayed on a computer or mobile phone screen through speech output. In our technology podcasts we always strive to keep our finger on the pulse when it comes to finding out about the latest trends and developments in emerging technology for people with sight loss.
In 2020 the so-called ‘Jedi Glove’ was developed by medics and engineers at the Clinical Science Institute in NUI, Galway. This ultrasonic glove was designed to help wearers navigate their environment through touch and essentially build up a 3D picture of what’s around them. The technology subsequently led to the development of the HapNav Watch by the team at NUIG, which works by providing wearers with navigation feedback through haptic vibrations on the wrist.
What was the original inspiration behind these technologies, how exactly does the HapNav work, and what is its potential as an orientation and mobility aid for the sight loss community? To help answer these questions and more we are joined on the show by Professor Derek O’Keefe from NUIG, the lead architect behind the Jedi Glove and HapNav Watch. In recognition of World Braille Day taking place today 4th January, our first Live Event of 2022 is dedicated entirely to the tactile writing system of Braille.
What is exactly is Braille? How is used, why is it so important, and where can it be learned? To help answer these questions and more we are joined by several experienced Braille readers that use Braille in all walks of life – at home, in school, in college, and in the workplace. Our guest speakers on the show today are Oran O’Neill, Brain Dalton, Audrey Tormey, and Daniel Daly. Designed to be fully accessible to all users, the new site provides information on all NCBI services across the country as well as latest news and podcast releases. It contains several new and exciting features that we are really looking forward to telling you about.
We will be talking about the BlindShell mobile phone, an easy-to-use mobile phone that combines a physical keyboard with a fully functional screen reader.
We will also be finding out about the new version of the TalkBack screen reader for Android phones, which features expanded gesture and navigation options, simplified menus, new voice commands and much more.

On this Live Event we will be joined by Dr. Craig Moore who is a engineer with a vision impairment working at NASA in Washington D.C.
Working at NASA for over 30 years, Dr. Moore is involved in the development of software to monitor the safety of rockets and life support systems for long duration missions. He is currently part of a team working on the Space Launch System that is set to be the most powerful rocket NASA has ever built. We will be finding out about his pioneering research as well as the technology he uses on our Live Event today.

On this Live Event we will be joined by Saqib Shaikh, founder of the hugely popular Seeing AI app from Microsoft.
Available in over 70 countries, Seeing AI is a free app created by Microsoft specifically for Apple iOS devices. Using the camera on an iPhone or iPad, the app harnesses the power of AI (Artificial Intelligence) to describe nearby surroundings, people, text, and objects. It can also help to identify products using a bar code scanner. Saqib will be telling us where the concept of Seeing AI came from, its key features, and what’s new in the latest release.
