Here on The Anna Nelson Show we talk about building our dream businesses around our “superpowers.” I help online entrepreneurs discover and understand the things they're extremely good at so they can spend their energy in the right areas, hire out the rest and make money doing the thing they love with greater confidence, clarity, a bigger sense of purpose and a lot more consistency.
Ever had an idea, executed on it and then decided that maybe you’ve changed your mind about it? Well this is episode 59 and the last episode in this particular series.
This week I discuss “identity” and how recognizing that the context of your life has changed is helpful when learning to lean into your new life.

I was watching the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off recently and I thought to myself that Ferris is probably strong in the CliftonStrengths domain: Influencing.
The Influencing domain is all about the ability to move people to take action. Helping other people’s voices get heard.
The entire movie is based on Ferris’s ability to get people to take action. Whether it’s to skip the day at school, rally kids around a cause (saving Ferris because they think he’s sick), and doing out-of-their-comfort-zone things that stretch those closest to him.
I’ve coached people In the online entrepreneurial space who lead with the Influencing domain. And it’s amazing how they’re able to influence their clients to take action. To do things they’ve never done before.
If you know that that’s your superpower, you’re going to build your business differently. You’re going to look for a certain type of client who needs you to help them move forward, to take action.
You’re going to care about your client’s success, but you’re okay not being best friends with them. You do want people to like you, so you’ll be sure not to ruin any bridges, but that’s also how you get people to buy in to making change - by inspiring them.
Now, not all business owners high in Influencing behave or show up in the same way. Each of us is super unique in our strengths. Which means that it’s up to you to find out how you inspire people to move forward.
This week fellow Gallup Certified Strengths Coach Micah Lorenc and I have a meta conversation about building our different coaching businesses through the lens of our different strengths. For example, he loves coaching teams. I love coaching individuals.
In this episode, learn how:
_ Strengths and learned skill sets are different
_ Knowing your strengths can change your life
_ To break the status quo by using your strengths
_ Different strengths coach coach differently based on how they’re wired
_ Coaching is applicable for different stages of your life
_ Someone with few relationship building strengths makes friends
_ Your strengths is your money maker, but how they can also hold you back
_ You can build a strengths-based business
_ Your strengths can lead to success and the things that are important to you
Has anyone ever asked you for tips on how to do something and you couldn’t believe they were asking you? There’s a reason for that. You’re extremely good at something that they’re not and they recognize it. The key is to understand how you think, feel, and behave differently than others and then build your business and life around that. This episode discusses the four areas in which you might think, feel and behave. I hope you’ll recognize yourself in one of them.
Sometimes we have to go out on our own to learn that we’re missing our other business half.
In this week’s podcast episode I walk with Bobby Klinck and Katie Chase about their entrepreneurial journeys both on their own and how they discovered they were a business match made in heaven.
Hint hint: their strengths had something to do with it.
If you struggle with overwhelm, there’s a reason why. And it isn’t what you might think.
Ever hear that cliche, “Your greatest strength is your greatest weakness”? It’s true. When you start feeling overwhelmed one (or more) of your strengths is getting in the way of what you’re trying to accomplish.
And the way to get a handle on overwhelm? Knowing your strengths.
Check out this week’s podcast episode to learn what overwhelm has to do with strengths.
Having a business isn’t always the most fun. Especially when it comes to doing those tasks that only you the owner can do until you hire it out. So when you’re ready to hire things out how do you know which things to hand over? It starts with your strengths.
You don’t want to hire someone who can do all the things you can. You want to hire someone who’s amazing at the things you’re not.
Check out this week’s podcast episode to learn how knowing your strengths can help you know what to hire out.
You’ve decided to be a coach. Now it’s time to decide what type of coaching business to have. Given how many coaches and coaching businesses are out there, how do you decide what to do? Who do you help? How do you help? How long do you help them for? What type of service do you offer?
You can shave months, even years, off the beginning stages of your business growth by building your client base and business services around your unique strengths. It’s possible.
If you have a business that’s working for you, but you don’t know the magic behind what’s working and why, imagine what would happen if you did.
Check out this week’s podcast episode to find out why knowing your strengths matters when it comes to having a coaching business you love.
Knowing your strengths doesn’t just come into play when it comes to what you do in life. It matters as well for who you’re best wired to serve. There’s a reason why you love working with that one client and a reason why you dread working with the other one.
Listen to this week’s podcast episode to find out how knowing your strengths matters when it comes to working with your dream clients.
Molly Cahill is a social media marketer who loves Instagram. She also loves CliftonStrengths. We talked about how her strengths lend beautifully to the type of work she does with her functional medicine and holistic wellness doctor clients.
Despite knowing about her strengths from previous work experience, Molly gained insight into how her top strengths have shown up in her work and how she can lean more into them moving forward in this podcast conversation.
We talked about the differences of the Myers-Briggs and CliftonStrengths; how the same strengths that we each have shows up similarly and differently in our businesses; and at the end Molly gave some tips for being yourself on Instagram.
When deciding to work with a coach it’s nice to know what you can expect from someone, though you never actually know until you try it.

There are lots of questions I get asked when it comes to what I do and one of them was, “What if I’m told that the thing I don’t like doing is my superpower?”
I wouldn’t want to meet with a coach if I was going to be encouraged to keep doing the very thing I didn’t like doing! That’s be awful!
There’s a difference between being good at something naturally and having learned something and done it over and over to the point where you know how to do it really well.
But just because you know how to do something really well and you paid lots of money to learn it (college, grad school, certifications) doesn’t mean that that’s your superpower. You just learned how to do something and can do it.
Your superpower you can do anytime, with a level of excellence, ease, energy and enjoyment and nothing you don’t like doing can compare to it. Those are the clues to knowing what your superpower is.

One question I get asked a lot is “What makes the CliftonStrengths assessment different from all the other assessments.” That’s a good question and one that I answer in this week’s podcast episode.
Listen to Episode 41 on The Anna Nelson Show to hear what makes the CliftonStrengths assessment different from the other assessments.
Pretty sure most people don’t ever wonder if there’s a “problem” with knowing what they’re good at, but there’s always a con somewhere. This week’s episode is a little bit tongue in cheek, but there are problems with knowing your superpowers and you may want to know what they are.
Listen to Episode 40 on The Anna Nelson Show to hear the problems with knowing your strengths.
When you look at other people’s businesses, do you ever wonder why they have the particular business that they have? I always think it’s fascinating. And so today on the podcast I wanted to share why I help people discover their strengths so they can confidently pursue the dream they have for themselves.
The business I currently have is not like the business I created originally, but it’s so much better. And it’s perfectly me.
Listen to Episode 39 on The Anna Nelson Show to hear why I help people discover their strengths.

When you first start a business, people recommend doing “the thing that you’re good at.” The problem though is that a lot of us are good at things that we don’t actually enjoy doing. It can be hard to separate out what you’re good at from what you’re innately good at. I don’t know about you, but I know that I don’t want to have a business that I don’t enjoy even if I am good at doing something.
Don’t get me wrong, business building is hard and there are lots of things that I don’t enjoy doing - like figuring out which accounting software to use and how to use it. But when it comes to offering services that we can make money at and make a difference in someone’s life it’s extremely valuable to know how we’re wired so we’re not guessing and headed down the wrong path.
I spent YEARS figuring out what type of business I wanted to have. I knew I wanted a business and I even started different ones, but I learned the hard way that I was wired for a specific one.
Listen to Episode 38 on The Anna Nelson Show to hear my entrepreneurial journey and why it might be beneficial for you to actually pay to find out what it is you’re good at.

She was well into her business when she and I had a 1:1 session and we discuss on this week’s podcast what she learned about herself when she finally had verbiage to understand how she’s wired and who she’s wired to help and how she’s made significant changes in the way she shows up for her clients.

He’s helped dozens of business owners from around the world create a clear marketing plan using a simple 5-part framework.
In this episode, learn how:
_ Milan Kowalewskiused his strategic thinking and problem solving strengths to create individualized marketing plans for some of the top cosmetic doctors in New York City even when they were across the hall from each other.
_ By learning about his strengths and conversely how those strengths showed up as weaknesses, Milan was able to get out of his own way and trust that how he had been helping his clients was actually solid and now he didn’t have to second guess himself
_ How he was naturally tracking metrics for his clients to help them see how their marketing efforts were paying off (something yours truly had never thought about doing until recently)
_ At the end we got really meta and talked about how Milan as a marketer who helps his clients differentiate their work from others who work in the same industry and how I as a strengths coach do the the same thing except with clients who’s businesses vary widely

Raise your hand if you ever fought with your mother? I know I certainly did and until I was well into adulthood I never appreciated the strengths that my mom has. In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought it’d be interesting to have my mom on the show and talk about how learning how we are each wired made a difference when relating to one another.
In this episode, learn:
_ How self-awareness is key, whether you’re the parent or the adult child
_ Why knowing your strengths is important in family life
_ How opposite strengths can be a positive if you know and appreciate the other person’s strengths
_ How your own family culture can affect how you love the next generation
_ How a practical parent might parent differently than a more empathetic parent
_ The importance of of knowing how you function in everyday life
_ The difference between those who solve problems and those make things better
_ The importance of recognizing how you show up with your strengths in any situation
_ And ultimately, how love and respect are the most important thing regardless of how you’re wired
My mom and I are complete opposites of each other when it comes to how we show up in the world. We discussed our differences when I was a child and now as I’m an adult. If you have anyone close to you, it can be really life-changing and life-giving to know how you operate and how your loved one operates. It can be a powerful combination or a source of great frustration.

Kristen Westcott is a business growth and systems strategist who helps online coaches, copywriters, and other service providers scale without the frustration that massive growth often brings. After honing her skills as a Director of Operations, Kristen recognized that what was holding many entrepreneurs back wasn’t a lack of drive or ability but a lack of foundational systems that support the day-to-day operations of a scaling business.
Now, she spends her time helping entrepreneurs focus on the right things so they can spend more of their time stepping into the role of visionary leader and less time on the administrative and day-to-day tasks.
This week on the show I had the opportunity to connect with Kristen and we confirmed the fact that we are completely opposite of each other. She has the perfect strengths to come into my business behind the scenes and get me organized. Something I have no aptitude for, but I really appreciate when it’s done.

I’ve met quite a few entrepreneurs who tell me that they’re a “recovering perfectionist.” I’ll nod my head and say, “I’m one too.” When building something from the ground up it usually doesn’t look like what we envisioned, but you have to start somewhere and starting “somewhere” usually means putting something out there, seeing what happens, then tweaking it and putting it out there again.
Perfectionists have an extremely difficult time just putting something out there. They might mull something over for days, weeks, months or even years. It’s not healthy to be a perfectionist and those of us who are “recovering” know what a relief it is to not have to be perfect.
That’s the subject of this week’s podcast. I discuss perfectionism from the book “How to Beat Perfectionism” by Darlene Lancer and I discuss how certain strengths have perfectionist tendencies.
If you want a business, and something’s holding you back, it could very well be your perfectionistic leaning strengths.

One of the hardest questions to answer is, "What do you want?"
The second hardest question?
"Why?"
I can look at others and point to what they have and say, "I want that!" But I need to ask myself, "why?" Why do I think I want that?
When it comes to business, the "what" is the direction, the "why" is the reason for heading out in the first place.
The reasons I want my business will be different than the reasons you want yours. The key is to remember them and not start pursuing someone else's "what". This is the subject of this week's podcast.
Check it out and let me know what you think!

When you crawl into bed, what makes you feel like you had a good day?
I know I had a good day when I've connected with others. In fact, that's how I structured my business. I connect with strangers every day.
Now, on the backend of my business there are things I absolutely don't like doing, like learning a new accounting tool or planning out social content, but I can't have a business if I don't do the things that are necessary to run a business.
Getting things done, i.e. being productive, requires finding a way to do the things you enjoy and and the things you don't enjoy.
In this week's podcast episode I discuss how our strengths determine how we feel productive. Why? Because it's important to recognize that "productivity" means something different for you and me. We're going to have different businesses based on how we're wired and we're going to get stuck on the backend of our businesses based on how we're wired.
It's not a bad thing, it's just something we need to be aware of and then manage differently.
Ever go on vacation and wonder why you’re not having as much fun as you thought you’d be having? Sounds crazy, but when we go on vacation, so do our strengths. And if you’ve ever wondered if something was wrong with you, it might have been that your strengths didn’t know what to do with themselves. This week on the show I discuss how my strengths went awry on a recent family trip and how I’ll manage them the next time I go away.

We just came out of a season where it’s all about giving gifts to others. As we enter a new season of goals and resolutions, what’s the gift you’re going to give yourself? Sometimes, to make a dream or goal come true, we need to give ourselves a “gift” that’s bigger than a material item. Maybe it’s therapy, an online class, or a new baking tool.
What can you give yourself as you begin 2021 that’ll help you move forward in your hopes and dreams?
Anything worthwhile takes awhile to come to fruition. No matter what it is, remembering, when you’re doing the work of showing up but not seeing results, it’s helpful to remind yourself that “this is a long-tail game.”
We get to choose what we bring forward and leave behind in 2021. Don’t leave behind anything you truly want to make happen in the new year. Keep doing the work. It’ll pay off.
The thing about personality tests are that they’re personal. We forget that when we get our results and we start telling people about them. The thing, most people don’t really care about your results, but you should! Personality assessments are personal and that means they’re for you to dive deep into them and recognize how your results show up in your life.
How many times have you thought you had a mental “block” to overcome? I know I’ve thought a lot about it before and for the longest time I thought something was wrong with me. But actually, nothing was (or is) wrong with me, it was just that my greatest strengths were getting in the way of me moving forward. They had become my weakness.
In this podcast, I share a few examples of how one’s strengths can get in the way and how they show up as weaknesses. I.e. perfectionism. That one I’ve personally struggled with before. Now I know that I like things to be better, but sometimes things just have to get done. They don’t need to get better.
When Bobby Klinck said he’d be willing to come on my show and talk about his experience having me come into his biz to review his strengths and his team member’s strengths, I said, “Great, here’s a link to schedule a time!”
Bobby’s a smart guy. He’s self-aware and his business is going really well, but even he learned things about himself that has since changed the course of his business. For the good.

Has anyone ever asked you for tips on how to do something and you couldn’t believe they were asking you? There’s a reason for that. You’re extremely good at something that they’re not and they recognize it. The key is to understand how you think, feel, and behave differently than others and then build your business and life around that. This episode discusses the four areas you might think, feel and behave. I hope you’ll recognize yourself in one of them.
How do you dream again when you had the “thing” you dreamed of, but it’s no more? It's a process. You can’t dream again until you’ve processed the loss of your other dream. When the time is right you’ll feel a shift, and even though it might feel scary and pointless and stupid, you’ll be ready to put yourself out there and start pursuing that new version of your dream.
Everyone talks about pursuing dreams. Hardly anyone talks about how to process the loss of those dreams. This episode may sound like a downer at first, but it’s meant to bring awareness to the fact that there’s a grieving process associated with loss of any kind. When you’re going through a loss, it’s important to recognize which part of the grieving process you’re in because the more aware you are, the better the outcome will be.
This week’s guest is a former corporate investment advisor turned online entrepreneur. I met Laurie Bodisch, Founder and CEO of Her Wealth Coach at an entrepreneurial event in San Diego, California. We quickly became fast friends and eventually she became a client of mine. In today’s episode we discuss how learning about her strengths made her more confident in moving forward with her business, how her strengths played into her corporate job and how she’s now proactively living out of her strengths in her own way, free from the bureaucracy of her previous corporate roles.
How well do you manage transition? Even if you want the new upcoming change, how well do you manage walking over that bridge from where you were to where you’re going? The way you manage it is really important. Understanding how our strengths affect how you experience change is key. Or at least really helpful.
When was the last time you tried something new and it changed your life? Were you nervous beforehand? Were you glad afterwards that you had tried it? Did you regret putting yourself out there? There are pros and cons to trying new things, but the greatest con is that if you aren’t willing to try something new, you’ll never know how your life could’ve changed.
Have you ever been brave about something and when you told others about the dream you were pursuing you started to get “feedback” and it took you by surprise? Then, did you notice that you began doubting yourself and backtracking on your dream, forgetting why you wanted to be brave in the first place? In this episode I talk about how to recognize when someone else’s fear starts to influence you and what to do about it. It’s real. And just because someone else isn’t pursuing what you’re pursuing, no matter the reason, doesn’t mean you can keep on your path.
There’s a situation in my life where I’ve said a few times out loud, “I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.” In this week’s podcast episode I talk about the fine line of trusting that you’ve done the work to know how to avoid “waiting” for something to fall through and being okay if ultimately the other shoe does drop.
How many times have you pursued something and it didn’t turn out the way you thought it would? Did you evaluate and do the hard work to understand where you went wrong? It’s easy to blame others or circumstances for what went wrong, but what if you did the work of looking at yourself and seeing how you could improve? Doing that work can seem pointless when you don’t fully understand what the results can or will be, but if you do the work you’ll see results and your life can dramatically change for the better.
Recognizing what you’re good at requires self-awareness and a desire to get honest with yourself. It’s easy to dismiss the thing you love doing as the thing you do for fun. But, if you can recognize that there’s something deeper to the thing you enjoy doing then you can translate that into something much bigger in your personal and professional life. There’s no reason to think that you don’t know what you’re good at. You absolutely do.
Have circumstances ever seemed so bad that to get out of them seemed impossible? I’ve been there and know how discouraging it can feel. Where the odds just seem super stacked against you. But did you know that knowing your strengths can actually help you figure out how to move forward in your life despite those overwhelming circumstances? It’s true. That’s the subject of this week’s episode!
Have you ever thought that going back to school would help you figure out what to do with your life? You’re not alone. Getting an education has always been a way to move forward in your life. Have you ever asked someone who you thought knew you pretty well to tell you what they thought you were good at? Were they helpful? Spot on?
