Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about ‘Extreme sports in the Caribbean’. As you listen I would like you to answer the following question: Which sport does the podcast mention that you can do in the island of Dominica? Is it A. hiking, B. jet blading or C. canyoning? Those options again are A. hiking, B. jet blading or C. canyoning. As I’m sure you already know, the Caribbean is a wonderful place to go swimming in crystal clear waters and to enjoy the tropical climate. However, there is another side to the Caribbean for all the people who are interested in adventure and pushing themselves to the limit, and today I’m going to give you a few examples. We can start with extreme water sports in the island of Barbados. In Barbados you can try jet blading, and if you’ve never heard of this sport before then let me explain it to you. This sport allows you to fly through the air using a jet pack, which is similar to a backpack. It is worn on your back and straps are put over your shoulders. There are also straps that secure the jet pack over your chest and waist. This jet pack is powered by water that propels or pushes you into the air up to 15 feet or roughly 4.6 metres, and you can control the direction that you fly in by using the handles that are connected to it. This is definitely a one of a kind sport for anyone looking for a thrilling new experience. If you prefer sports away from the beach, then you can try canyoning in the Commonwealth of Dominica. In the Dominican rainforest you will find some exceptional canyons, which are valleys that are usually deep and narrow with a river at the bottom. Canyoning, therefore, refers to travelling through the river in the canyon using various methods such as swimming and floating (which is when a person lies on top of water but doesn’t sink). While canyoning you will also rappel into the canyon by going down the sides of the mountain. You do this holding on to a rope that is connected to the top. In Dominica, it is possible for most people to participate in this sport; however, you have to keep an eye on the weather, because bad weather may prevent a canyoning trip. If, however, you would rather participate in an activity that is a bit simpler but gives you the same sense of excitement you can go hiking in Trinidad. It’s possible to find tours that will take you on easy or more advanced hikes through the country and which allow you to enjoy beautiful waterfalls and explore caves. This sport is certainly one that will exercise both the thighs and calves of your legs. So, if you’re travelling to the Caribbean there is no need to pick anyone’s brain about exciting sports that you can find there because you already have the information that you need right here. I asked you a question at the beginning of the podcast and the question was ‘Which sport does the podcast mention that you can do in the island of Dominica?’ If you answered C. canyoning, you were correct!
Nuevo podcast de 'Aprende inglés con Radio Um.e': The Jaipur knee. Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about ‘The Jaipur knee’. As you listen, I would like you to write down the definition of a ‘prosthetic leg’. There are many people around the world who have serious problems walking and doing regular activities by themselves because they have lost a leg or part of a leg for various reasons such as health problems or an accident. To help people with this problem, prosthetic legs have been developed. A prosthetic leg is an artificial replacement of a leg, and in the United States of America it may cost between $5,000 and $50,000 and may only last 3 to 5 years. However, there are some that last much longer. Because prosthetic legs are generally very expensive, there are a lot of people who are unable to access them. However, I am happy to say that all hope is not lost for these people! While studying at the University of Stanford in the USA, students were challenged to create a knee joint for amputees in developing countries. The students had to create a knee joint that would be relatively cheap but that would also work very well in order to help the people that needed it the most. Joel Sadler, who was born and raised in the Caribbean island of Jamaica, was one of the students given that task by his lecturer, and he led a team of students to develop what is now called The Jaipur Knee. They worked along with the Jaipur Foot charity and were able to design a knee joint that, if used normally, could be used for at least 3 years and would cost about $25. During a Ted Talk in Jamaica, Joel spoke about his inspiration for the Jaipur Knee and how he and his team worked to build it. To begin, the team used cardboard to produce a model for their design. Later, they managed to create a prototype of a knee joint, and a prototype is basically a model of something. This prototype would have cost less than $100. However, the students did not stop there, they continued to try to come up with better models and continually tested their knee joints. They also listened to the users and took their comments about the product into consideration as they designed new prototypes until they were able create a prosthetic knee joint that was user-friendly and affordable. Their work on this project did not go unnoticed. In 2009, Time magazine named the Jaipur knee ‘one of the 50 Best Inventions of the World’ in that year. Joel said that one idea that can help when faced with what seems to be an impossible task is to look at the big problem and break it up into smaller pieces that can be solved. In so doing, you can come up with small solutions that can then solve a big problem. He also said that ‘big ideas start small’, so if you have an idea, start to work on it and you may be surprised at the amazing things you can achieve. At the beginning of the podcast you were asked to find the definition of a ‘prosthetic leg’ which is simply an artificial replacement of a leg.
Nuevo podcast de 'Aprende inglés con Radio Um.es.': Physical characteristics. Hello everyone, this is ‘Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about ‘physical characteristics’. As you listen, try to find a synonym for the words ‘coiled’ and ‘bushy’ and see if you can find the meaning of ‘hazel’. So, once again try to find a synonym for the words ‘coiled’ and ‘bushy’ and see if you can find the meaning of ‘hazel’. In the world there are people of different colours, shapes and sizes and one important aspect of language learning is being able to provide a physical description of others. We can talk about the physical characteristics of people from three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. To start, we can speak about people from Africa who generally have a dark skin tone. Their hair is black or dark brown and is tightly coiled (which is spelled c,o,i,l,e,d) or tightly curled (c,u,r,le,d), and it is shorter than other hair types and very thick. Most black people have dark brown eyes but there are some who have hazel (which is h,a,z,e,l), green or even blue eyes. Their noses are generally wider and flatter than other races and their lips are thicker. On the other hand, people from Asia are known to have fair skin but there are some who have a very dark skin tone, similar to that of black people. Their hair is black or dark brown and can be straight (that’s s,t,r,a,i,g,h,t) or wavy (w,a,v,y) and can grow to their waist. Europeans, the third group, may have different hair colours, ranging between blond, which is a yellow colour, and dark brown, and their hair may be straight, wavy or curly. Their skin can be fair or it may be tanned if they spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, and their eyes may be brown, blue, green, or grey. They could also have hazel eyes - which are a greenish-brown colour - or amber coloured eyes which are a brownish-yellow colour. Their lips can be either thin or full and their noses may be large or small, hooked or turned-up. In terms of eyebrows, most groups of people can have either thin eyebrows or eyebrows that are bushy or thick. However, no matter your skin tone, hair or eye colour or whether you have thin or full lips, all people are beautiful. You were asked at the beginning of the podcast to listen out for some specific information and now I’ll give you the answers. A synonym for the word ‘coiled’ is ‘curled’ and a synonym for ‘bushy’ is ‘thick’ and the colour ‘hazel’ is a greenish-brown colour.
Nuevo podcast de 'Aprende inglés con Radio Um.es': Jerk chicken. Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about a Caribbean dish which is mostly found in the island of Jamaica, and it’s called ‘Jerk Chicken’. Now, one of the first things that you may ask is, ‘What is Jerk Chicken?’ In this case the word ‘jerk’ (which is spelled j,e,r,k) does not refer to a sudden, quick movement, nor does it refer informally to a person who is stupid. Rather, it is a seasoning that is used on meat. In this podcast I’m encouraging you to get a pen and a piece of paper and write down the ingredients for jerk chicken along with the instructions for its preparation. At the end of the podcast I will repeat the ingredients and you can find out if you were able to write them all down correctly. Jerk chicken is a dish that you will enjoy and can use to impress your friends and family. To start, I will give you the list of ingredients. To make jerk chicken you need: 3 pounds, or roughly 1.5 kilograms of chicken breasts; 6, or fewer, sliced scotch bonnet peppers; 2 tablespoons of thyme (which is spelled t,h,y,m,e and NOT t,i,m,e); you also need 2 tablespoons of ground allspice; 8 cloves of garlic that have been finely chopped; 3 medium-sized onions that have been finely chopped; 2 tablespoons of brown sugar; 2 tablespoons of salt; 2 tablespoons of ground black pepper; and 1 to 2 teaspoons of the following three ingredients: ground cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. You will also need ½ a cup of olive oil; ½ a cup of soy sauce; the juice of one lime; 1 cup of orange juice and 1 cup of white vinegar. Now that you have the ingredients, I will speak about how to prepare jerk chicken. First, you need to chop the onions, garlic and peppers, and when you chop something you are cutting it into pieces. So, chop the onions, garlic and peppers first. Then, blend all the ingredients (except the chicken) in a blender and that will be your jerk sauce. Rub the sauce on the meat but save some for basting, which is the process of pouring spoonfuls of the sauce over the meat while it is cooking so that it remains moist and doesn’t become dry. Additionally, some of the jerk sauce can be saved to be used as a dipping sauce after it has been cooked. When rubbing the sauce on the meat it may be best not to use your bare hands, but rather to use gloves because it may burn your hands. After adding the sauce to the chicken, it is important to allow the chicken to marinate in the sauce overnight or for at least for 2-3 hours, and marinate simply means that you are allowing the chicken to soak in the sauce. After this, you can bake the chicken in the oven at about 180 degrees C or on number 4 if you have a fan/gas oven. You bake it for about an hour, turning the chicken over after 30 minutes. Or, you can grill the chicken slowly until it is cooked, turning it regularly and basting it with some of the marinade that you saved. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is jerk chicken. You can eat it with rice and peas, or with a salad and a side of fried plantain. But I assure you, if you are brave enough to make jerk chicken and you do it well, you won’t regret it. This information was adapted from the website jamaicatravelandculture.com which can be viewed for more Jamaican recipes. And here is the list of ingredients necessary for jerk chicken, you will need: chicken; scotch bonnet peppers; thyme; ground allspice; garlic; onions; brown sugar; salt; ground black pepper; ground cinnamon; nutmeg; ginger; olive oil; soy sauce; a lime; orange juice and white vinegar.
Aprende inglés con Radio Um.es. Foering language learning in the English speaking- Caribbean.
Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about ‘Foreign language learning in the English-speaking Caribbean’. As you listen I would like you to find the six different languages taught at the language school in the island of Trinidad and find the definition of the word ‘francophone’. In the Caribbean you will find a number of different languages such as English, Spanish, French and Dutch, as well as other languages and local dialects, a dialect being a specific form of a language that is spoken in a particular region or among a specific group of people. Students have the opportunity to learn languages other than English while in secondary school or high school. However, there are other options available, both to students in school and to the wider population. In the island of Trinidad, for example, you can find the Caribbean School of Languages where you can learn six different languages, which are Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. This school offers courses from beginner to advanced, so no matter your language level you can find a course that suits your needs. Then, there are organizations in the Caribbean that are dedicated to the promotion of French. For example, the Alliance Française in St Lucia is a non-profit making organization that seeks to advance what is known about French and francophone cultures, and francophone simply means French-speaking. It provides French classes and also provides English classes when asked to do so. Furthermore, in the Caribbean you will find institutions that are dedicated to encouraging Spanish language learning, and the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation in Barbados is the perfect example of this type of organization. Despite the challenges that Venezuela has been facing, it is still offering Spanish classes to members of the Barbadian society for free in 2019. However, if you are looking for a school this is specific to helping you to improve your English, Barbados is also home to The Codrington Language Centre. This Centre aims to help students to improve their English, and at the same time to learn about a different culture. The teachers are qualified and committed to their students. While there you can learn English in a relaxed setting and go on trips around the country as well as to other Caribbean nations. The Caribbean is a region that understands the importance of learning foreign languages as it seeks to advance in this competitive world. At the beginning of the podcast I asked you to try to find the six different languages taught at the language school in the island of Trinidad and those languages are: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. You were also supposed to find the definition of the word ‘francophone’ which means ‘French-speaking’.
Aprende inglés con Radio Um.es. Ecofriendly cruises. Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about ‘Eco-friendly cruises’. As you listen, I would like you to try to find the definition of these two words, and the words are ‘laundry’ and ‘condiments’. A cruise is a trip that is taken on a ship or boat for personal enjoyment and usually calls at or stops at more than one place. You will generally hear someone say that they are going on a cruise, ‘on’ being the preposition used in this case, and the boat is called a cruise ship. Cruise ships can have thousands of passengers and crew members and there are quite a few that are currently doing what they can to help to protect the environment. So, if you don’t mind travelling at a slower speed and want to be environmentally friendly while travelling in comfort, then one of these cruises may be a dream come true for you. We can start by talking about the Disney Cruise Line. The laundry, which in this case is the washing of clothes and linen, is done using water that is produced by the air conditioning system. Furthermore, all the ships have an environmental officer who is a person that keeps track of the ship’s activity and helps to educate the crew and guests about the environment. The ships have also been installed with lighting that is more efficient and they are doing more to regulate the air conditioning onboard. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has also brought its ships up to scratch when it comes to protecting the ocean and the environment in general. To minimize the amount of waste produced on the ships, they no longer use disposable utensils, nor do they have water bottles that are plastic. Additionally, they now purchase condiments in large quantities and condiments are things like ketchup and salt which can be added to food to add flavour. They also only buy products with the least amount of packaging possible (and packaging is simply the container or wrapping that surrounds an item). Moreover, they now have compact fluorescent bulbs and new ice-makers that use less water than the machines before them. Another cruise line that is making waves is the Solstice, Celebrity Cruises. It uses solar panels to power the elevators, also called lifts in the United Kingdom. It has a water filtration system that cleans used water before discarding it into the ocean, and there are also heat-transfer windows that reduce the need for air conditioning and let more natural light into the rooms. These three cruise lines allow many people to relax and unwind away from home and they do it in a way that tries to respect their surroundings. This just goes to show that everyone needs to play a role in protecting our environment. You were asked at the beginning of the podcast to find the definitions for laundry and condiments. Laundry can be the washing of clothes and linen and condiments are things like ketchup and salt which can be added to food to add flavour.
