All About Trans
All About Trans is an On Road project with the transgender community and the media in the UK. On Road is a charity that tackles social problems by improving media coverage of misrepresented groups and issues.
The All About Trans project encourages better understanding between the British media and the trans community by focusing on connecting media professionals with the trans people across the UK, using the web, digital storytelling and face-to-face meetups. We also promote trans voices in the media and focus on creating more positive portrayals of trans people.
Our Audioboom channel is for showcasing short podcasts from a series of real life stories from British trans people of all ages and backgrounds.
You can also hear feedback from the media professionals we’ve met during our interactions (informal, social meet-ups) which are designed to encourage better understanding and positive representation of trans people in the media.

School Revision: Trans Inclusion in Education was a day-long event that began to imagine what school life for young, trans people could look like in the future. Taking place in Lark Hall primary school in south London on Saturday 11th of June, the event was planned around the daily life and school timetable of gender variant school pupils. It was a collaborative, voluntary event organised by All About Trans, Gendered Intelligence, Juno Roche, and Wipe Out Transphobia.

Charlie, who is currently working on a new E4 drama series 'Banana', featuring a trans woman playing a trans woman character (comedian Bethany Black), found that the interaction gave her new perspectives about transition, and she found that everyone has a different take on it.
"I want to write more about transgender people and hope to improve visibility on TV."

Fox, who facilitated the interaction at BBC West Midlands, spoke to David Jennings, the Head of Regional and Local Programmes.
David was excited to have met a range of interesting people and talked about a lot of different things. He said that there was a good thing to be had when trans people appeared routinely in general coverage without mentioning being trans, but also that there had to be more discussions about trans experiences on-air.
For Sarah, the meeting was nothing put positive, and she told Ash that this was one of the most interesting things that she's done this year.
"It's a reminder for me how brilliant people are and what people can do when it feels right for them."
"I found it fascinating to find out what your stories are, how difficult it can be - both medically and psychologically. It's helpful to me as a journalist."
Carolle was surprised about how little she knew and explained to Ludo, who works in healthcare, that it's helped her to think about how BBC West Midlands portrays trans people - and that this may lead to a further dialogue and on-air coverage of trans issues.
This isn't the first time Phil has had meetings with trans people about media representation; however, he felt that this interaction was 'genuinely educational' - and that instead of feeling berated for ignorance, he felt 'gently led'.
"It's part of a journey. Eye opening is the wrong word, but definitely informative. And sensitising. It makes you sensitive to issues and is genuinely educational."
"Even though we are making programmes for very young children, there may be ways of at least showing different gender associations, so it's not always the stereotyped image."
Vanessa and Kay found the volunteers' openness and honesty on the interaction useful, and were relieved at the willingness to answer 'daft' questions.
"I feel I want to make sure that whether on Newsround or My Life - especially on Newsround's special on body image - we take some of the thoughts from today and make sure we act on them."
Sam, Sue and Cheryl also discussed making sure the people who make the programmes reflects the audience - bringing some of what they learned in our interaction into their recruitment campaigns.
"I found it useful and incredibly friendly. From the point of view of my role on CBBC, it's a reminder about the way that we try to reflect everyone's lives on the channel."
"It's just been great to listen to your stories from your transition," said Dan, who manages Stepping Out, part of CBBC's Children's and Learning.
"I've worked as a teacher and work here with kids on a daily basis. But actually, I've never really thought about what it would be like as a child to encounter feelings that something's not right in your body. I think that will stay with me when I'm working with children in the future."
"Spending a lovely lunchtime with people who know more about something than you do is always a lunchtime worth spending."
Helen and Sue were surprised to learn that there's a range of different identities and ways of relating to gender that they had no idea about, and that children can be quite young when gender dysphoria first starts to make an impression.
After an interaction with us a few months ago, we were back in Cardiff again for a larger interaction with the BBC Audience Council Wales, including some who came on the one before. Sion fed back to Kate Hutchinson from Wipe Out Transphobia.
"It's been absolutely fascinating. I've done one of these interactions before; I feel that laid the ground work, and now I feel as if we've started to build the house and my understanding has developed a lot more."
Eleri found this interaction just as positive as the last. As well as discovering more about trans issues, Eleri was pleased to find the positivity in the stories. "It's shown me how positive people can be. It's opened my eyes to see tht humans are loving and caring and do accept people for who they are."
Ryan found common ground with many of the volunteers' experiences, and found the interaction enlightening. "I was quite surprised at the difficulties the younger people are going through that are still present. I guess I thought that society had moved forward, but I think we're pretty behind in our acceptance of people who are transgender!"
For Pam, the interaction was an opportunity to share her experience of transitioning while working for the BBC, and building connections between older and younger trans people.
"It is a little bit easier - public perceptions have changed a bit, government perceptions have changed quite a bit - but there are terrible hurdles."
For Andrew, meeting young people from all backgrounds was important: "I think it's been really useful to talk to different members of the audience. One of the things that was really good was to speak to young people... to talk to young people in Wales was a really good experience."
Philippa Kennedy speaks about The Sun's coverage Dr Kate Stone and how the younger generation of journalists are keen on change.
"We need to review, as a paper, how we deal with these issues". Justin talks about the beginning of a learning process that will continue in the future, with the trans community in the UK.

J Tebble speaks to Gordon about how he found the latest meeting with local trans people in London saying he now has a "direct line" to advice from trans people in the future.
Sue Owen, Editor for BBC Radio Merseyside, discusses what she's learned with volunteer Amy. 'I think that the media is too quick to pigeon-hole people and simplify things when everyone is an individual with an individual story.'
She says she wants to take what she's learned back to her team at BBC Radio Merseyside.
Sophie Green spoke Michelle, Editor for North West Tonight. 'We talk to trans people in every day life - not just about about trans issues. If trans ever does come up as an issue, I'll be looking carefully at the terminology just to make sure it's respectful.'
In speaking to volunteer Ashleigh, she said: 'There isn't one way we can talk about things or one experience people have.'
She's already asked someone to do some work on BBC Radio Manchester, and wants to read up and talk to more people.
Volunteer and local trans man, Olly, took part in an All About Trans interaction and asked John Clayton how he found the session: "It's been a really interesting morning. In the end, it's about people. It's about people and it's about life."

Rebecca: "[The interaction was] Really really interesting. It's made me aware that trans is far more nuanced than I realised, far more fluid, and the stereotypes in the media that I see on a day to day basis are very extreme examples. It's opened my eyes to the need to portray it differently."

Paris Lees caught up with Bryan Kirkwood and Modupe Adeyeye at the end of the day. “Today was useful,” said Modupe, who plays Blessing, “because it’s nice to get more knowledge of everybody’s story and what actually happens. So thank you.” Bryan Kirkwood, Executive Producer of Hollyoaks, said: “Today’s been really inspiring. I’m very proud of our show for telling this story. It’s quite a terrifying tightrope to walk: knowing everybody who’s been through this experience has got a different story to tell and I’m sure we’ll come up against opposition on the way, not quite reflecting different individual’s experiences, but I think we can take a lot from today and make sure we set out with the best intentions to get it right, and make a really inspiring, original and gutsy character.”

“It's given me a greater awareness of individual differences, and making sure we don't tell a 'trans story'; we tell a character's story with trans aspects,” says Laura.
Vicky: “The main thing for me as Online Editor is to make sure that we represent the storyline online that normalises conversations around trans issues, and gives our audience a platform to discuss them.”
