"Preserving Faith in Times of Tribulation" by Maulana Taha Karaan Tuesday 23rd May 2017 | Masjid Al-Falaah - Birmingham
Taha Karaan was born on 2 June 1969 in Cape Town. He was the son of Yusuf Karaan. He memorized the Quran at Waterfall Islamic Institute and went to study at the Darul Uloom Deoband from where he graduated in 1991 with highest grades. He later studied for two years at the Cairo University. His teachers include Saeed Ahmad Palanpuri. Taha followed the Shafiʽi school but held close to the Hanafis and attributed himself to the Deobandism.
Taha was seen as an influential thinker in South Africa. He was honoured with the title "ash-Shāfi‘ī as–Sagīr" (The Junior Al-Shafi'i) by Khalil Ibrahim Mula Khatir. In 1996, Taha established Dar al-Uloom al-Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah in Strand.He succeeded his father Yusuf Karaan as the head-mufti of Muslim Judicial Council in 2015. He was the founder and director of Mahajjah Research Institute that he had started in defense of the Companions of the Prophet. He was known throughout South Africa for debating Shia's. In early 90s, Azam Tariq regarded Taha Karaan's expertise in refuting the Shia's extraordinary. He wrote Fleeing from Fate to Fate: 40 Ahadith on Contagion and Pandemics.
He died on 11 June 2021 due to COVID-19 complications. Islamic scholars and intellectuals Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf Mangera, Faraz Rabbani, Ismail ibn Musa Menk, Omar Suleiman and Yasir Qadhi expressed grief over his death.

Hamza Ali Abbasi is a Pakistani former film and television actor and director. He is known for his roles as Afzal in the drama serial Pyarey Afzal, and as Salahuddin in the drama serial Mann Mayal. Abbasi began his acting career in 2006 in the play Dally in the Dark, which was produced by Shah Shahrahbeel.

"I remember my first hijab. It was pink. Simple, I know but to 7 year old me, it was everything; a symbol of my maturity- that I was finally old enough to cover my hair like my other sisters did. I wore it day in, day out without fail-even if it didn’t match my outfit. I remember bragging about it and rubbing it in the faces of all my cousins that I was a ‘big girl’ now and that they were all ‘still children’.
I remember waiting around the washing machine and hanging it and until this day, I still have it with me, somewhere under the pile of other hijabs that I’ve bought over the years. If 7 year old me had ever met the Naeema of today, she would be horrified. Not because of the absurd amount of pimples on my forehead, (though, I’m sure that too would play a role) but because of something else. It is unfortunate, and I’m ashamed to say it but do not wear my hijab. My hijab wears me. When I walk into a shop and a person looks over in my direction I want to disappear. When a person speaks differently to me, thinking that I do not speak English properly I silently beg the ground to swallow me whole.
I hate it and for a while, I hated my hijab for it too. Though it was subconscious, over a long period of time, I begun to change aspects of myself to compensate for the ‘problems’ that my hijab caused me. Whenever I caught the eye of a stranger on me I smiled to show how normal I was. If I ever spoke to a stranger I would purposely change the way I spoke to sound cheerier and happy. If I was ever offered food I wasn’t sure of, I would fake a stomach illness or claim i had already eaten because I cringed at the thought of having to explain my religious restrictions. I did all these things and more yet it never occurred to me why. Who was I trying to impress? To explain myself to? "

While we can argue that Yusuf Mohamed falls into all three of these categories, the last phrase truly defines where he is today. Standing at the helm of Islamic Relief South Africa, Mr. Mohamed takes the notion of ‘greatness’ and zealously amplifies it.
The life we meticulously plan for ourselves isn’t always the life Allah has ordained for us. Yusuf can firmly validate this thought because ten years ago, he would’ve never imagined himself as the local CEO of one of the world’s most well-recognised and highly-acclaimed humanitarian agencies.
The Cape Town born-and-bred altruist defines himself as three things:
A traveller,asnarrated in a Hadith of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), explaining that we should reside like travellers in the temporary abode of the world, with all actions targeted towards gathering provisions for the journey to the Hereafter.An activist, as he constantly reflects on his purpose in this world and tries to make a positive difference in the lives of everyone he encounters; and,A father,who has the loving support of his three wonderful children and wife.
Graciously accepting the CEO position at Islamic Relief South Africa in December 2016, Mr. Mohamed cherishes the opportunity to contribute in any way he can with the capabilities Allah has given him. We attended the launch of Qurtuba Online Academy. Qurtuba Online Academy is a digital Islamic school based in South Africa. Their dual-curriculum [Cambridge International Assessment & Islamic Studies] ensures students a broad academic future, while simultaneously providing access to quality Islamic studies subjects, including Arabic.
Their classes provide all the necessary resources for students to thrive in a self-directed learning environment. Using the flipped learning methodology, students are provided with vibrant, engaging presentations, pre-recorded videos and other resources to engage with subject matter before live lessons, in which the teacher facilitates completion of problem-solving activities. This way students are able to familiarise themselves with subject matter in a meaningful way, at their own pace, before applying it practically. Currently servicing Grade 7-9s.

We were honoured to sit down with Jihan Kaisi, a Lebanese activist who visited Cape Town (via Africa Muslims Agency) a couple of months ago to raise awareness on the suffering of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in her country.
"There were 1.5million Syrian refugees in Lebanon living under dire circumstances. The influx of refugees due to the conflict include 35000 Lebanese returnees and more than 31000 Palestinian refugees from Syria. Kaisi said kids were most affected in the inhumane camps."

One of the most interesting interviews. We were really blown away by Dr Razeen's passion for his work and the Quran.
Dr Razeen Gopal, a cardiac electrophysiologist at the Cape Town Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Centre located at Mediclinic Panorama, implanted the world’s smallest smart device to control heart beats and pumping action – a first in the emerging markets region.
Dr Gopal’s unit remains one of the leading centres for management of cardiac arrhythmias on the African continent and he feels that the addition of the new platform of devices is in keeping with the centre’s motto that “with innovation, comes cure”.
The Cape Town AF Centre, as a centre of academic excellence has taken a leading role in the dissipation of knowledge in the discipline of cardiac electrophysiology (both in cardiac ablation and device therapy). Dr Gopal proctors quite broadly, having regularly travelled to the Middle East, Indian Ocean Islands, Namibia and nationally. He runs an extremely popular pacemaker implantation course (Medtronic EBAC/EHRA accredited), which has been attended by hundreds of training cardiologists and qualified specialists from within South Africa and the African continent.
In addition, his avid passion for teaching the ECG has been popularised by the national ECG courses he hosts annually.

Faghmeda Miller was the first Muslim woman in South Africa to publicly disclose her status as a person infected with HIV. Since making that decision soon after her husband died from the disease, she has become an HIV/AIDS activist, focusing specifically on the Muslim community. When she discovered in the mid-1990s that she too was infected, her initial reaction she said was one of shame. “The first thing that went through my mind was the shame I had brought on my family. I, therefore decided to keep this information to myself, after all it wouldn’t be long till I die.”
Faghmeda said she did not realize the possibility for people infected with HIV to lead full, productive lives, a message she now actively shares with others. Learning the facts about HIV and AIDS has been a transformative experience for Faghmeda who claims in her life, her attitude, and even her personality changed. In the process, she said she found the courage to battle the stigma attached to infection, even announcing her status on community radio. She also co-founded a non-profit organization called Positively Muslim.

Sheikh Riyadh is a third generation South African. His great grandfather came to South Africa during the Boer War as an officer in the British army. Sheikh Riyadh embraced Islam in 1991 in Cape Town.
From 1995 to 2003 he journeyed in search of Islamic knowledge to many parts of the Muslim world. Some of the places where he spent time were Morocco, Medina, Yemen, Somalia and Syria. Resident Imam of Masjidul Sunni in Rondebosch East. He also runs the Imam Suyuti Institute at Al-Jaami.

Muhammad Tim Humble is from Newcastle & graduated from the famous faculty of hadeeth and Islamic Studies at the Islamic University of Madinah in 2011. Ustadh Tim Humble is a British revert, who has ijaza in the six famous books of hadeeth.
He is also experienced in the field of Ruqyah, the Islamic method of healing with the Quran, specializing in treatment for black magic and evil eye. He accepted Islam at the age of 14 & is currently involved with a dawah organisation called IDC North East which is based in & around Newcastle.
Tim Humble became interested in Islam during Religious Education classes in Primary School. After researching it further on the internet he accepted Islam at the age of 14. Thereafter he went through a period of 4-5 years where he struggled to implement and practice his new-found faith. The Muslim community in his hometown was unwelcoming and unhelpful to New Muslims. In his own words, “One of the biggest problems we have in the Ummah is that we are excellent at selling the religion; we’re great salesmen…What we’re really, really rubbish at is keeping them in Islam once they become Muslim.”
A suggestion by a friend sparked the idea of studying in the Islamic University of Madinah. During his first Hajj pilgrimage he applied to and was accepted into the University. He graduated from the Faculty of Hadeeth Studies in 2011. Notably he memorized and is certified in the six canonical works of hadeeth.

Established 5 years ago, the chefs are graduates from two of South Africa’s renowned Chef Schools, Christina Martin and Fusion Cooking School. 25-year old Bcom graduate took the leap by becoming self-employed. He now runs a successful fruit supply company, Cape Crops which exports fruit to over 20 countries. Essack founded his fruit supply company four years ago, while studying his B.Com Degree at the University of Cape Town.
On his reason for starting the company, Essack said that business had always been in his blood. “My grandfather and father had been businessmen, they never worked in a corporate world”, said Essack. His first venture began where he imported rice to Pakistan and India.

She has performed, emceed, and produced comedy shows, competitions and events in major clubs, theaters and universities around the world. In addition to comedy, Mona is a sought-after speaker for her experience using stand-up comedy to bring joy and affinity in various socio-political topics in the United States, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Mona has a Master’s in International Development and is fluent in English, German and Arabic and performs in these languages. Having lived and worked around the world, Mona uses her global insight and homegrown Chicago-style to offer a fresh look at shifting frustration into funny.
Most notably, Mona became the first Arab and Muslim woman to perform stand-up comedy in the nation’s most prestigious institutions: Carnegie Hall in New York City as well as the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC twice, and was the featured headliner this October 2018!

Zubayr is a South African cricketer who started his career in the Western Province cricket team squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup.
In June 2018, Hamza joined the squad for the Cape Cobras team for the 2018–19 season. In September 2018, he signed to play for South Western Districts’ in the 2018 Africa T20 Cup. He became the leading run-scorer for Districts with 102 runs in four matches in the tournament. In December 2018, he played against Pakistan for South Africa’s Test squad.

"Zahrah was born and bred in Goodwood, Cape Town. With a natural inclination for school subjects such as drama and debating, she doesn’t shy away from describing her younger self as: ‘the child whom adults liked, but whom all the other kids hated! I thought I could do anything and everything.’
After matric, Zahrah enrolled at the University of the Western Cape to study law, but in her second year realised that it wasn’t for her. She then started applying for bursaries and volunteered at radio stations, one of them being local Islamic radio station Voice of the Cape, where she became the drive-time show producer. However, she was itching to grace the screens of South African TVs. This dream became more attainable when she made the move from radio to TV production the following year. Expresso was looking for a news and entertainment producer, and Zahrah grabbed the opportunity. ‘I went for the interview and had almost given up hope when I didn’t hear back from them after three weeks. Sh. Hamza Maqbul: He was born in Whittier, California, and lived in Southern California until the age of ten when he moved to Blaine, Washington. After graduating from Blaine High School, he went on to attend the University of Washington and in 2004 completed a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and a Bachelors of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.
After graduation Shaykh Hamzah went on to pursue traditional Islamic studies, which took him to a number of countries, including Syria and Egypt where he studied the Arabic language, Morocco, Mauritania, and UAE, where he studied the madhab of Imam Malik, grammar, usul al-hadith, and the two renditions of the qira’ah of Imam Nafi’, Warsh and Qalun, and finally Pakistan where he had the opportunity to study tafsir, usul al-hadith, hadith, ‘ilm al-rijal and Hanafi fiqh.
All of these studies culminated in him receiving an ijazat al-tadris, literally meaning “a license to teach” as well as an unbroken chain of transmission by which to narrate the hadith of such books as the Muwatta of Imam Malik, the Sihah al-Sittah (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i and Ibn Majah), and the Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar of Imam al-Tahawi.

“Bee – neigh” or “Bee – ney”
"The word Binaye is derived from the Arabic word Binaa’u/Banaa’, which means “to build” or “build”.
Our concept is simple: We take a few verses from the Qur’aan and tell a story around them with our two characters Dahlia and Ali. At some point in the story, Dahlia and Ali (and your child) have to build something that’s related to the story (and thus the verse from the Qur’aan).
This involves the child in the story. Physically involving kids in the story ensures that the message from the Qur’aan has a lasting impact on their lives.
The toy pieces are designed to be chunky, rugged and can withstand a fair amount of abuse. As such, the friction fit (when connecting pieces together), may be slightly tight. This will certainly improve over time.
We want this toy to be like Lego or Meccano – in that the child will take it apart and make different things. This will foster creativity, while your child will be reminded of the lessons of the Qur’an for a long time to come. Encourage your child to get creative by making simple things."

Shahnaaz Paruk was born in Durban to a family in the clothing manufacturing industry. She received her early education at the Ridge Park College before going onto the Lockhat Islamia School where she matriculated. She went to university to study media and communications before joining the family business in the Marketing and Human Resources Department. Next came the Gordon Institute of Business Science.
She then decided that she wanted to be of service to the community and joined SANZAF where she worked for a few years before moving to Islamic Relief South Africa. Amongst the projects she worked on at Sanzaf was the organisation’s development of skills for individuals so that they could hold down sustainable jobs, and at Islamic Relief she was responsible for multiple roles during her tenure at the organisation. She is now the CEO of Penny Appeal South Africa.
Penny Appeal’s philosophy is that of affordable charity, which includes all people being able to contribute toward changing the lives of millions. Small Change, Big Difference.

We had the pleasure and honour of interviewing the Dr Shaykh Yasir Qadhi.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, PhD, is the Dean of Academic Affairs at AlMaghrib Institute. He is one of the few people who has combined a traditional Eastern Islamic seminary education with a Western academic training of the study of Islam. Shaykh Yasir graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences, and then completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah. He then returned to America, and completed a PhD in Religious Studies from Yale University. He has authored several books, published academic articles, and appeared on numerous satellite and TV stations around the globe. His online videos are of the most popular and highly-watched Islamic videos in English. Shaykh Yasir Qadhi is a resident Scholar of the Memphis Islamic Center. He is also a professor at Rhodes College, in the Department of Religious Studies.

Rafeeq Islaam is an Alim who is also a Hafiz. Originally hails from Zimbabwe and Founder of " The Talented Tenth" . A passionate and ambitious Motivational Speaker, Teacher and Coach who freelances in areas around KZN under the mentorship of Toastmasters Club. Currently working on three literary works in Educational Sciences, Scientific Discoveries in the Traditions of the Prophet SAW and General Life Principles. He has a Diploma in Islamic Banking, Finance and Medical Jurisprudence.
We ask Rafeeq a couple things about Ramadan and he also shares a couple of beautiful stories.

"I am "Team Boeber" in Ramadan, although the soup with the daltjie is winning me over" - Shaykh Muhammad West
Shaykh Muhammad West, born in Cape Town, South Africa, spent most of his youth growing up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He went on to study a degree in Islamic theology and dawah at the Islamic University of Madinah while studying a degree in accounting science through the University of South Africa via correspondence. Shaykh returned to Cape Town in 2011 graduating 2nd in the faculty of Dawah. Muhammad West further qualified as a chartered accountant of South Africa after completing his articles.
A devoted husband and father of three, Shaykh Muhammad is currently the Group Financial Accountant at one of the world's largest retailers. He holds the position of resident Imam of the Boorhaanol Islam Masjid, one of the oldest mosques in South Africa. Muhammad West is also the Western Cape director of the Imam Development Project (IDP) whereby local Imams from underprivileged communities are given the necessary support and skills to further benefit the communities they serve.

A South African author, musician and activist. Mpofu-Walsh was president of the University of Cape Town Students' Representative Council in 2010. He holds an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford. Late last year he published his debut book, Democracy and Delusion: 10 Myths in South African Politics. Along with the book, he released his debut rap album, also titled "Democracy and Delusion."

“We have to redefine how we look at Nikah..." - Ismail Kamdar
Shaykh Ismail Kamdar began his study of Islam at the age of thirteen. He has been actively involved in Islamic work since the age of 16.
He has completed a seven year Alim course in 2007 and a BA in Islamic Studies from Islamic Online University in 2014. He is currently a senior lecturer, as well as the Faculty Manager of the Islamic Online University, and is the Content Manager at Zileej.
Over the past decade, Shaykh Ismail has served as a school teacher and administrator in multiple schools in South Africa and India. He has also delivered lectures and workshops in many locations locally and abroad, and appeared on many Radio Stations across the country. He has also served as a Radio Presenter at Radio Al-Ansaar for several years, until November 2016.
In 2011, Shaykh Ismail discovered the importance of personal development and noticed a lack of Islamic literature dedicated to this field. After consuming dozens of books and courses on the topic, he decided to start this blog. The focus of this blog is articles and books related to the field of Islamic Self Help.
Shaykh Ismail is the author of Having Fun the Halal Way: Entertainment in Islam, Getting The Barakah: An Islamic Guide to Time Management, Best Of Creation: An Islamic Guide to Self-Confidence, and Homeschooling 101, among other titles.

We speak about everything with Zain Bhika from his Radio 702 competition to his ACE (Art of Creative Expression) workshops....Definitely one of the most inspiring interviews... Alhamdullillah.
The opportunity to travel around the world and meet incredible artists like Yusuf Islam and Dawud Wharnsby, unlatched his understanding of what it truly means to be Muslim. It taught him to make the most of life before returning to our Creator, by being the best we can be and striving for social justice. He says that as Muslims, it’s our responsibility to give to those who don’t have anything, to take care of the poor, to smile at each other and “to make things better while you are here.”
Zain has found that music and lyrics are a powerful unifier, it brings us closer together as Muslims around the world. He feels blessed that so many people resonate with his music, especially young children, who can often be heard singing along to his lyrics. Zain has a worldwide following of all ages yet he remains extremely humble. “We don’t earn our talents, Allah gives it to us,” he says.
His greatest life lesson: “Be true to yourself and keep the intention of whatever you’re doing real.” Zain relates that life is temporary and loss is inevitable, however the only constant is our Creator and returning to him. “We need to prepare to meet our Creator in the best of ways.”

“How can we make Durban a more entrepreneur-friendly city?” - Mohamed Chohan
We have this syndrome in South Africa where people think they must have a nice office, nice office furniture and a laptop to start a business. We hear it all the time that start-ups fail because they don’t have access to finance. Skill yourself first and the finance will follow. He calls it “bootstrapping”. "Keep it simple, know what you want to do, do the research and then work hard."
Mohamed Chohan is the Managing Director at Startup Grind Durban. Previously he has worked as a Business Development Manager at RSAWEB and has completed a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from UKZN. He has also worked at Smartrac which is a Management Consultancy, Black Ticket Creative Bureau which is a Brand Consultancy and KPMG.

Her advice to the youth: “Stay grounded.” Living in the age of the digital fishbowl, it’s easy to get lost in the hype and try to fit in. However, Zaheerah encourages them that it’s actually better to be different and stand out. She advises the parents within her generation to spend quality time with their families, even if it’s spent doing the simplest of things.
Her life motto: “Live for now.” Acknowledging that life is temporary and that there are no guarantees, Zaheerah makes the most of every moment and teaches her girls to harness the ‘power of now’.
Zaheerah would like to be remembered as someone who tried her best. The women she’s inspired and the charity groups she supports will emphatically bear testimony to this fact.
Even if you’ve met her for the briefest of moments, Zaheerah Bham-Ismail is someone who will leave a lasting and magnetic impression on you. The notable media presence and philanthropic legacy she’s built is a stepping stone for women in South Africa, proving that with the right attitude and dedication, we can achieve anything. Family-orientated career girl, goal-digger, dynamic orator, selfless social worker and overall superwoman, Zaheerah plays many roles, each one with grace and honourability.

Shaykh Junaid Kharsany was born in Durban, South Africa. He was blessed to complete the memorization of the Holy Qur’an at the tender age of fifteen.
He began his higher Islamic studies at the renowned seminary, Madrasah ‘Arabiyya Islamiyya in Azaadville, South Africa. During his studies, he immersed himself in the study of Arabic, Jurisprudence, Hadith, Tafsir among other Islamic sciences.
He graduated with a degree in the Islamic sciences, including authorizations in the major books of hadith. Soon after graduating, he began teaching sacred knowledge at the Islahul Muslimeen seminary in Durban, South Africa.
Shaykh Junaid has long been involved in the work of da’wah (religious propagation) and has served as a social worker and leader for a number of communities. He has also served as a supervisor for the educational board of the Jamiat Ulama Kwazulu Natal and as an Imam in Inglewood, California.
He has previously taught at the Institute of Knowledge in Diamond Bar, California in the Alim program. He teaches at al-Falaah College in South Africa and also serves as a radio presenter and host for Radio al-Ansaar. Additionally, he serves as a panelist for Radio Islam and occasionally appears as a guest on Cii Radio channel. He joined Rayyan Institute as an instructor in April, 2014.
He presently resides in Durban, South Africa with his wife and children.

"I made a decision to become a Baby Love Consultant as I can help others, as I know that there are a lot of parents out there such as first time mums/parents as well as parents who have more than one child who are suffering in silence with sleep deprivation, no time for themselves or for their older children, which eventually leads to the other siblings suffering because of this.
My advice to all parents: deal with this before it gets worse. Remember nothing in life is easy, but by working hard, making an effort and perseverance to get the routine in place you and your family will reap a lifetime of rewards."

"You are not one of us!" - "They said as they removed me from the Masjid" - Bilal Ismail
Shaykh Bilal Ismail was born in Durban, South Africa.
He memorized the Qurʾan while studying at school and went on to complete high school in 1998. Bilal then went on to do a diploma in Computer Science in 1999, as well as qualifying as a Microsoft certified systems engineer. He was accepted into the Islamic University of Madinah in 2001 where he completed his Diploma in Arabic followed by a BA in Islamic Law from the faculty of Sharīʿah.
Shaykh Tawfique Chowdhury says about him: “He was always one of the most studious people I have met and he never wasted time whilst in Madinah.” Also: “Shaykh Bilal is a personal friend of mine and I would describe him to be a true student of knowledge – someone who speaks with knowledge and is of the highest adab and morals.”
After graduating, he returned to South Africa where he had been teaching Fiqh and Tafsīr weekly classes in Durban since the summer of 2007 and says he is “still a student of knowledge – and will always be!”
He manages AlKauthar Institute South Africa and the Imam Development Project.

She is an avid writer, dabbling in freelance journalism and a community activist, concerned mainly with Muslim women’s issues, advocating for the participation of Muslim women at all levels of religious life. She is a contributor to Muslimah Media Watch, where she critiques representations of Muslim women in the media.
Safiyyah is also a teaching fellow in the Study of Islam at the University of Johannesburg. She has worked at the Afro-Middle East Centre previously. She is the co-founder of Faithworks, a network of South African Muslim women, running activities like halaqat, retreats, interfaith & solidarity events, film screenings and more. Safiyyah serves on the committee of Masjid ul-Islam, where she serves the congregation. She lives in Johannesburg with her husband Ebrahim and their twin girls.

"My family was like my sword trying to battle the cancer" - Kauthar Roomaney
This brave, young and beautiful (inside and out) young woman was so inspiring. She speaks about her cancer experience throughout the episode. Her lowest moment was when her mother took her to the hairdresser to cut her hair. Instead of cutting it, the hairdresser just combed it all off. It was a devastating experience. She describes chemo to us and explains why she wants to write her book and start her own NGO. You will be blown away with this episode.
She inspired us - she says that the cancer is not a death penalty or an end of a gruesome story - rather it was a beginning of a beautiful journey for her.

After growing up in a boarding school he pursued IT, to Engineering and then switched to the love of Social Services. Early on he realized the gaps and challenges our youth are faced with. (HIV and Drugs) - hence Youth Interactive was established.
Raised by a single parent he explains why our elders and teachers are important to us and how their experiences and wisdom shapes us into becoming who we are today and tomorrow. Issa Lopez was really interesting. Born in Grenada, Spain and then grew up in Mexico. Travelled to England to learn English and then fell in love with Cape Town. Growing up he was obsessed about patching and mixing fabrics & material together. Who knew he would one day be showcased on the SA Fashion Week platform as Issa Leo.
Issa reminded us about many lessons. By the way we bought and tried a couple of his caps and T-shirts - really great quality and so comfortable. We visited his beautiful small boutique store in Cape Town CBD too.

Obviously that didn't pan out because Allah had better and more rewarding plans for Fatima Asmal - Alhamdullillah. It was really great to meet her. We have been in contact for about 10+ years but seeing her, her mom and her adorable son was heart-warming to say the least.
Fatima is an open book. She's courageous, daring and so caring. She tells us about how she started Ilm-SA and a beautiful story about empowering others (whether Muslim or not-yet).
Some gratitude advice, single parenting advice and as she says... "just go with the flow"

Shubnum stuck out like a "sore thumb" in school already. She speaks about her school life and University, as well as taking us through her process of writing her first book called "Onion Tears".
"At the end of the day. We all the same. We go through the same pain, same fears, same grief. I write to connect people."
Shubnum is also fascinated by people's memories and how we all see the world. She also believes from the heart that she can do much better in terms of writing and art. (Her best is yet to come!). We loved Shubnum's vulnerability and her story. We know you will enjoy it too.

The liaison for Shari’ah board and Shari’ah product partners & a member of the boutique Exco and Sales committee.
20 years of financial markets experience encompassing the entire investments value chain, from dealing, equity analysis, portfolio management and leadership. He is a mentor, husband, father and he can go deep from a philosophical perspective and we loved it. No spoiler alerts.

We struggled to edit this almost 2-hour conversation about their journey from Johannesburg to Jerusalem and beyond. This beautiful couple guided us through their 14-month road trip through Africa. From drinking amazing Ethiopian coffee for just R6.00 to seeing Christians praying just like Muslims. They found the interaction between the Sudanese women & men unique and very comforting.
Yes, they encountered a couple of tests and challenges, but that was dwarfed by a super inspiring Ramadaan and Eid in Palestine. No spoiler alerts...

Surah Al-Qadr is entirely dedicated to Laylatul Qadr, the most noble of nights during the month of Ramadan when the Quran was first revealed.
In this episode, Ustadh Nouman teaches us the nuances of the phrase “laylatul qadr” in Arabic, which combines the meanings of night of “decree”, “honor” and “power”. This is the night when Allah will decree that the angels execute all His decisions for the rest of the year; when Allah revealed the most honorable words through His most honored angel to His most honored messenger.
Finally it is a night endowed with unusual power; a night when all our sincere duaa will be accepted. It is the ultimate night of peace and prayer; one we must take advantage of as the blessed month of Ramadan comes to a close. But above all else, Laylatul Qadr is a celebration of the Quran.

Nouman Ali Khan (Arabic:نعمان علی خان) is an American Muslim speaker and founder, CEO and lead instructor at Bayyinah, the Institute for Arabic and Qur'anic Studies.[2]
Nouman Ali Khan founded Bayyinah in 2006, after serving as the professor of Arabic at Nassau Community College.[3][4] His current residence is in Dallas, Texas. He also lectures internationally on the matters of Tafsir and learning Arabic to understand the Quran.[5]
Khan has written or co-written a number of works, including Divine Speech and Revive Your Heart.[6] He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.[7]

We were invited to attend the launch of the South African Foundation of Islamic Art (SAFIA) in Cape Town. We had a brief chat to the CEO, Shaheen Soni.
SAFIA believes that participation in the arts can improve the social well-being and economic future of those living, working and studying in South Africa. Because of this belief, SAFIA, in partnership with schools and colleges, community groups, regional and national agencies will over the next five years work to increase the number of exhibition opportunities for the widest range of people to experience the arts.

Siedd's popularity has taken the humble, enthusiastic artist by surprise, he told CBC, but he thinks people are responding to his work because of it's positive, faith-based, message.
"It's just that some of the mainstream music ... it's very vulgar," he said. "Some of the themes of the music - it's just like sex, drugs and rock n' roll. It's kind of part of the culture in a sense. ... and there's some people who want other than that."
The singer also believes people are responding to the North American influences in his music, which set him apart from the majority of Muslim artists, who are based overseas and whose music is inspired by trends in their homelands.
Siedd's music features a cappella arrangements created using layered vocalizations and hand claps, often digitally-manipulated. His renditions of other artist's songs frequently involve rewritten lyrics with wholesome or spiritual themes.
