Unity is one of those things in Churches that is so easy to take for granted – and yet we quickly realise how vitally important it is when it's not there. Jesus knew how unity makes a difference in the lives of his followers and the witness of his Church. He prayed about it and we have a record of that prayer in John 17. He prayed for us, us who in 2024 seek to follow him and give him authority in our lives. American cartoonist Bil Keane said “Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” What we do with our time matters to God so we should use it wisely. In this sermon we welcome back Simon Ward from Compassion who speaks about handling the gift of time with care, as well as giving an update on the work of Compassion Australia.

This sermon was part of our Family Service, where we heard updates from our children and youth about all that has been happening in their programs. Jackson goes on to explore how we should handle children with care, and God's warning on how we mustn't lead them to sin. He also encourages us to take inspiration from the children in our lives, as we learn about who Jesus teaches is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

James the half brother of Jesus made some strong statements about the importance of taking care of how we use our words. In chapter one of his letter, he says "If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless". In this sermon we will take some time to examine the importance of handling our words with care. Ross speaks about the power of our words, and gives us some practical tips.

There’s a recurring pattern that comes out of recent research: Bible engagement is directly related to spiritual growth. However, Bible Society Research recently showed that only 2 in 10 Aussie Christians read their Bible daily. As we get busier, our attention span gets shorter, and communication must happen within the span of a text message, a Facebook post, or a Tweet of 140 characters. So how can Christians be brought back to a book of over 700,000 words? Perhaps one way is to learn again how to handle the Word of God with care. This sermon continues our series from the book of Esther looking at the antagonist, or the villain, of this account, a man named Haman. Not a lot is said of Mordecai in the story of Esther, but what we can surmise from his actions are that he was a humble and obedient follower of Yahweh, despite living in a society that did not honour God. How can we as New Testament believers live as humble and obedient followers of Jesus in our 21st Century secular society? In this sermon Rachel seeks to answer this question.

The rise of social media has seen a significant increase in the number of voices influencing our decision-making. The wide range of directions can cause confusion, anxiety and destructive behaviour, especially when it comes to decisions about who we are. Have you ever been given a gift so generous that you aren't sure if you can accept it? What is the purpose of the untainted Gospel that Ross and Brendon have spoken about the last two sermons?Where do we end up when we believe that we’re made right with God through the death and resurrection of Jesus?What happens when we abandon all effort at impressing God with religious effort and self-righteous moralism, and simply trust?There are two ways to entry into a human family. You are either born biologically into the family or by become a member of a family by means of adoption. The message of the Good News of Jesus dying and rising from the dead employs both of these terms to describe the highest purpose of the Gospel. Galatians 3:26-4:7 focuses on the fulfilment of the promise made to Abraham, which was made good in Jesus… our sonship in God’s family by adoption. This is the high point of the Galatian’s letter.

English writer Samuel Johnson once stated that “People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed”. In our journey of faith, we too can easily be distracted from the important things we already know. Such was the case with the Galatians who’d been led astray from the Good News of Jesus that Paul had preached. This cultural diversity has had profound impacts on Australian society influencing everything including the Christian Church. In this sermon we conclude our series at HumeRidge, “Seriously! I AM”!
In John 14:6 we read, “Jesus said, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. Like the other ‘I AM’ statements Jesus made, these words are absurd if He is an ordinary man. But even more, to believe and preach publicly that Jesus is the only way to God, is highly offensive in a society that legislates that only inclusivism and tolerance are absolute. It was the middle of the day the sun was probably broiling hot— Jesus was tired and thirsty. He had been walking for a couple of days and he was only halfway to his destination. As inconvenient as it seemed and as inhospitable the conditions, Jesus took time to offer a Samaritan woman living water. This offer would change her life and the lives of everyone around her. Jesus offers the same thirst quenching living water to us all.

As we continue in the ‘Seriously I am’ series we come to the seventh I am statement of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. Jesus said, I am the True Vine. Jesus’ betrayal, arrest and crucifixion is imminent. Therefore it is significant that Jesus would teach them about “abiding in Him”, knowing that they were to face many difficult times, like we do. “I am the good shepherd” is the fourth of seven “I am” declarations of Jesus recorded in John’s Gospel. These “I am” proclamations point to His unique divine identity and purpose. “I am the good shepherd.” It is worth noting that he describes Himself as not only “the shepherd” but the “good shepherd.” In this sermon Ross explores what this means and what it says about God and us.

Jesus has been portrayed as a great teacher. People reacted differently to his teaching – some eagerly embraced it, while others rejected it. But in John 8, two little words spoken by Jesus saw an angry crowd eager to stone Him. This was an intense reaction. Those two words were “I Am”. As we start a new year, we are often prompted to consider a ‘fresh start’. For many, new years resolutions are set, and goals are made. But often the attention is given to our external condition – exercise more, drink less, start a diet, give up smoking… But what about our internal condition? 1 Timothy 4:8,9 says: “Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart.” Let’s start having a look at how we can set some new year patterns that create a spiritual fitness that is good for our soul in 2024.

Conflict - sometimes subtle, sometimes significant - can be the default for many Christians and churches. The quest for self-fulfilment can blind us to our Christ-given identity and cause us to try fill the validation vacuum, that only relationship with Christ can, elsewhere. The result is inner and external conflict. Come on a journey through Philippians 2 where Paul reminds us to empty ourselves of the world and fill up with Christ.

The birth of Jesus, the first Christmas was so keenly anticipated that heaven could not contain its enthusiasm. There was no stopping the joy. There was no holding back the enthusiasm. Like a child’s explosive joy at a gift at Christmas - this birth was the beginning of the promised fulfilment and heaven couldn’t help itself. The skies lit up with heavenly hosts singing, shepherds watching on, wise men following a star, dreams, prophetic words and a story that has spanned the centuries. This is our second week considering God’s Word directing us to 'Be Still'. We live in the speed, demands and pressures of the 21st century. 'Being still' is an oxymoron in this fast pace of life we experience. Yet it’s God speaking a command to us that He knows will positively transform our lives. There are many wonderful organisations who care for the marginalised and stand with those who are oppressed, and they serve others well. The work they do is important. The Church is called to serve, and we need to be faithful to that call and always remember that the thing that should distinguish the service we give is that it should be done in Jesus' name. The Bible teaches that when we pray and make our requests to God, we are to ask in the name of Jesus. "In Jesus name" is not like a magical key that unlocks the door for our requests. “In Jesus name” is not a secret code for always getting what we want from God, that he is somehow obliged to give us what we want. However it is important that we ask in Jesus name. “In Jesus name” is in part recognition of our ongoing need for grace, and our acknowledgement that all that we have and ask for is because of Jesus our saviour. In this sermon Ross will take some time to examine the importance of praying in Jesus name.

Richard is the former Principal of Toowoomba Christian College,having served in that role from 1992 until his recent retirement. In 1980 Richard spent one year in the Philippines doing missionary work, and has continued to have strong interest in mission activities. He moved with his family to Toowoomba in 1988, and taught at Toowoomba Christian College, taking over the role of Principal in March 1992.
During his time as Principal of Toowoomba Christian College, Richard also served on the State Council of Christian Schools Australia and Associated Christian Schools and was a Board member of the National Council of Christian Schools Australia.
Richard is married to Narelle and has four children.

If you could say in one word what you want more of in life, what would it be? We live in a very affluent country and there is much we could choose. Surveys asking this question are being constantly conducted. The most common response is “happiness”. People are striving for happiness and are willing to look for it in many and varied ways. To be happy in all areas of life is a good experience, yet the bible presents something more fulfilling than happiness, and that is joy. Biblical joy is more than feeling happy. It’s a deep and lasting emotion that comes from receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit and knowing that God fulfils the promises He gives from His Word.

Have you ever heard someone say that they are just waiting on the Lord? It often sounds very spiritual, but does it mean to wait on the Lord and how do we do it? When you hear the word ‘ambassador’, you might automatically think of someone with the important task of representing our nation in a foreign country, or someone whose job it is to be the go-between for two large organisations. This person often speaks and acts and on behalf of who it is that they represent. But in 2 Corinthians, we read Paul’s words that, as Christians, we are to be Christ’s ambassadors. How are we, as followers of Jesus, supposed to represent Christ? What does this look like and how do we do this important task well?

Making comparisons is something we all do, and yet oftentimes these comparisons can have negative consequences. By comparing ourselves to others we often breed jealousy, or fear, or other negative emotions that aren’t helpful. In this sermon Elicia Wuersching will be pointing us away from comparisons, and exploring how we can seek to make connections instead, using tools that we can find in the Bible to help us. We will be exploring how we can connect better with people, and how we can seek to be more like Jesus in the way we treat others.

Tucked away in the third Chapter of 1 Thessalonians there is this little phrase – 'because of you'. Just a few words but it expresses so much. Paul had preached and ministered in Thessalonica on three separate occasions but had to leave the city because of opposition. He may have wondered whether what he had done had made any difference, but then he received reports that encouraged and caused him joy – because of you. In this sermon we look at that little phrase and talk about how people’s lives are changing and growing to know Jesus better because of what’s happening here at HumeRidge.

To Walk in the Way of God requires humility, selflessness and grace rather than pushing our own agenda. True repentance (metanoia) shows itself through continuous, ongoing transformation of our heart and mind, and therefore our choices and actions too. God established His Church, and calls us to walk with Him, united with other believers, and expressing practically His love, grace and mercy, both within the church community and towards all those we encounter. In this sermon we consider God’s call for unity in the Church. What it means to be the fully functioning Body and Bride of Christ; and in so doing, a powerful witness to those still seeking to know Him.

For some people, the word repentance brings to mind an image of a wild looking character with a sign saying - "Repent the End is Near!". Yet this is an important biblical command that we should seek to recommit ourselves to when we inevitably find ourselves straying from behaviours and decisions that are pleasing to God. In Romans 12:1-2 Paul tells the young believers in Rome to offer themselves as living sacrifices. That must have raised some eyebrows in the early church. A sacrifice by definition was dead. How could they possibly be a ‘Living Sacrifice’? Paul goes on to give comprehensive instructions of how to be a living sacrifice. The writer of Hebrews tells his readers to offer a “sacrifice of praise”. Yet praise doesn’t feel like a sacrifice most Sundays does it? In this message Jenny is going to dive into what it means to practice both of these types of sacrifice.

In Thessalonica, Paul and friends were accused of “troubling the whole world… turning the world upside down.” What we discover is the world is turned upside down not by the messenger, but the message, the Christian Gospel. The good news continues to be unwelcome (bad) news to many people and Neale Proellocks addresses the opposition. Jesus’ crucifixion was not out of the ordinary for its time. 2000 years ago, under Roman occupation, crucifixions were relatively standard for criminals and those who had undermined Roman authority. And so the crucifixion of Jesus was just like any other crucifixion at the time. However, Christians around the world since 33AD would tell you that this wasn’t just ‘another death by crucifixion’. The man on the cross that day wasn’t just ‘another man who died’. So who is this Jesus? Life is full of moments of waiting. Sometimes we are waiting for trivial things, but sometimes we are waiting for really important, life changing things. The Bible says “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Many people commonly associate the book of Daniel with the story about the Lion’s Den. However, there is so much more in this book – practical, important help for doing life in a God honouring way that is relevant to us in 2023. Daniel knew what it meant to be resolute in his loyalty to God, even though he lived in a setting where doing so risked his own life. He had to consistently make strong, deliberate decisions that meant he stayed true to the God that mattered so much to him. Every day we are faced with choices, and often times choosing what is easy or convenient doesn't align with actions that demonstrate loyalty to God. Our God - Father, Son & Holy Spirit, created us in His image as spirit beings and housed us in physical bodies to complete a physical assignment - rule over the earth. Our disobedience to Him caused a reversal in our being and separated us from God. He saves and restores our being through God the Son - Jesus. At the request of Jesus, He gives us His Spirit - God the Holy Spirit. To remain in Him in this fallen world, our spirit must acknowledge His Spirit through Fellowship with Him, which leads to intimacy with Him and a Partnership that has no end. This was and is Jesus' desire for His Followers. He left when He completed His assignment so that the Spirit could come to help us complete the new assignment that God has given us - to show and share the grace and truth of Jesus to the world.

The primary role of the Holy Spirit is to breathe into us the very nature of God, and thereby exhibit the “fruit” of the Spirit in our everyday life. When that occurs, the Spirit (the power of God’s breath) begins anew to imagine what a new world looks like: it is called the “Kingdom of God”. The Holy Spirit was present and powerful in creating the world in the beginning and continues to minister powerfully today in restoring the world back towards what God originally intended it to be. The work of Holy Spirit is revealed powerfully through the Old Testament and through Jesus’ life and ministry. Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit would be given to all believers and we saw that happen in the early church and we continue to see that today as we seek to live by the power of the Word and the Spirit.

The birth of Jesus is a wonderful story worthy of celebration. However, perhaps the greater climax of the story is the completion and fulfilment of the reason for our Saviour’s birth. On Christmas Day we took a moment to focus on a baby who was born to bring us Home. Let’s lift our eyes to the place we are homesick for, and to the Person who longs for our homecoming.

The spectacle of Christmas at its heart is an attempt to capture the wonder of God’s love for the world. The lights, decorations, songs and celebrations create that something “extra” to the everyday that makes Christmas such a special time. It’s interesting to note that in the actual first Christmas story, God worked in the opposite direction. Rather than the expected “more”, Jesus set aside the glory of heaven to be born in a barn. In this sermon we explore the wonder of this Christmas miracle and the impact humility can have on our lives, our homes and the church.

We all have different experiences of family. For each of us the home we grew up in has influenced us more significantly than we might think. Unfortunately a happy home is not as common as we might hope, but the truth is we can have a happy home - it takes some hard work. The home will only be as happy as the contribution you make to it. This Sunday Graham Jones will be speaking about some principles that are Biblically based that can guide you and support you in having a healthy, happy family. Jesus has gone to prepare for us a place, the Father’s Home, where those who love Him will dwell for eternity.

Jesus started life on earth being homeless, born in a manger in a small town while Joseph and Mary were travelling. Then when he began his ministry, he again became homeless. And yet despite his homeless state, Jesus spoke often about home and that, in Him, we could find a place of unconditional love and acceptance. Jesus created this sense of home for the disciples and others that followed him – a place of security and belonging. This is what he wanted his church to be like, to have this feeling of home. He wanted his church to be family, to be unified as one, to be a home for the homeless as we wait for his return to take us to our eternal home.

The Armour of God is a bit of a niche topic, coming from a passage tucked away in the late part of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. This is a passage that tells us to put on a whole heap of armour that we can’t see and fight in a battle that we can’t see. What is going on? In the writings of Paul in his letter to the Philippians, he claims to have discovered the secret to contentment. Somehow he is able to write letters of joy, gratitude and hope, despite the grim circumstances he finds himself in. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get in on that secret! The good news is, Paul has left behind a trail of principles and strategies that can truly make a difference in our own circumstances we find ourselves in. It is possible that we too can develop contentment in amidst the chaos of life.

Our culture has a lot of voices telling us what to believe, what is ‘truth’ and therefore what to base our lives upon. Paul is in jail, writing to the family of believers in the city of Colossae. He doesn’t know them, but he has been told all about them. They are living in a city that worships a multitude of gods and they are under pressure to conform. They are a lot like us, under pressure and in need of some help! Jesus said “You are the light of the world.” But sometimes we don’t feel too shiny. Sometimes fear can get the better of us, especially in a culture that increasingly rejects the light and what God says is good. But we stand firm and free in the hope we have. Churches are often known by certain characteristics… their facilities, their music, their children’s ministry, or maybe their justice, care and mercy ministries – perhaps even their celebrity pastor. There’s nothing wrong with any of these and yet according to the New Testament there is a deeper, more significant basis for a church’s identity. As humans we are made in the image of God and therefore, we reflect his image to the world around us. Not only that, but as Christians we are called to be imitators of Christ, to grow in our Christlikeness. This includes reflecting and living in faithfulness. In this sermon we are led by guest speakers Bethany & Isaac as we explore God’s faithfulness as demonstrated through the life of Moses and the Israelites in the book of Exodus, and then consider what it looks like for us to live as faithful followers in response to this.
About our Speakers:
Bethany has been attending HumeRidge since moving from Brisbane to Toowoomba in 2014, as a new graduate physiotherapist. In her role a physio, Bethany works in a number of schools within the Darling Downs region to provide support for students with disabilities. At HumeRidge, Bethany has been involved in leading at Youth Group and Stumpy’s for the last 9 years, as well as being involved in the Young Adults ministry and serving as a floor manager on a Sunday morning.
Isaac is 26 years old and has been involved with HumeRidge since his family moved back to Toowoomba in 2001. He is a physiotherapist at St Vincent’s hospital and he loves his sport. Isaac and his wife have been involved in the life of our church through leading at youth group, driving buses, and leading a LifeGroup.

Today’s culture may tell you that truth is relative, or that each person can make up their own truth. This is common in that mankind has a belief that they don’t need an external absolute truth because their knowledge and self-sufficiency is all they need. However, the Bible tells us that there is only one truth, and it comes from God. If something doesn’t line up with the Word of God, then it’s not the truth. Major Ian Thomas an evangelist/writer who founded Torchbearers International said, “Jesus Christ Himself is the final exegesis of all truth. He is all that we need to know about God, and He is all we need to know about man.” As Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Archbishop William Temple said the church is the only co-operative society in the world that should exist for the benefit of non-members. As Christians we are called to share the Good News, with Jesus himself instructing us to “go back and report what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.” Jesus knew that those things would mean something to those who heard or saw. Today there are those who are still wondering if Jesus is the one. What would you hope they might see or hear if they were to watch and listen to his church here at Humeridge?

The word ‘father’ can evoke many different reactions. For some it holds meaning that is positive and wonderful, and yet for others it can have quite the opposite effect. When Jesus was asked to teach his disciples to pray, he began with the words, Our Father. Jesus was very clear when he commissioned his followers to go and make disciples of all nations. This call to mission is still relevant for everyone that call themselves a disciple of Jesus today. But stepping into this work of mission means leaving where we are comfortable and going into the world of someone else. This is not easy and is often daunting and overwhelming. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35 As Christians we are called to live in unity. Jesus prayed that we would experience perfect unity. But, throughout history, Christians haven’t always been known for unity. Satan knows that disunity is ugly and if he can keep us divided then we won’t draw people to God, in fact the opposite is true. If he can divide us, if he can take our focus off the cross, then we fight and bicker, we judge and criticise. We look ugly, and the gospel is tarnished. To live the lives Jesus wants for us we need unity. Join us for this sermon as we look at why we need it, how we live it, and how we maintain it.

As we continue in our messages through Amos, we are going to consider the nation of Israel and the privileged position they had. They were God’s chosen family. They had a great heritage. God had led them, blessed them, provided for them and He asked them to remain faithful. Amos addresses God’s anger towards them. Their prosperity and pride had taken them away from God, though they still felt entitled to all the goodness from God because they believed they were ticking the boxes of God’s approval. They had become disobedient and blind to the holiness of God. The things of the world and the attitude of selfishness had taken hold of their lives. They worshipped in the temple, going through the rituals, the festivals and offering sacrifices. But in their daily living, (their frontline) their lives were dominated by unrighteousness and acts of injustice. In this sermon Graham Jones shares with us how the message of Amos is so relevant to the world and the Church in the 21st century.

In this sermon we continue on with the book of Amos, taking a look at the theme of Justice. We take a deeper look at Amos 2 and showing how the ideas in this chapter are brought out and developed through the rest of the book. God is a God of Justice – especially for the poor and needy, and Israel’s actions were contrary to God’s heart. In this book, God reveals that the people’s injustice is actually the symptom of a deeper heart issue – one which he will go to any length to fix.

The Old Testament Prophets often come across as being a fairly intense group of individuals. They seem to be angry, cranky and even a bit over the top. Amos said, "Hear this word, you cows of Bashan … who oppress the poor and crush the needy" (Amos 4:1) and “Now then, I will crush you, as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.” (Amos 2: 13). Isaiah says, "Stop bringing meaningless offerings. Your incense is detestable to me … I cannot bear your evil assemblies" (Isaiah 1:13). There are many other examples - the books of the Prophets are filled with similarly angry sentiments, and yet they claimed that they spoke on behalf of God. So, it is important to ask the question - what do we make of God if these words are his words? More importantly we need to ask - are there any warnings from Amos that we should heed? This sermon kicks off our new series on the Old Testament Book, Amos, called Warning Signs. The book of Amos can’t be described as a happy book, it’s not an easy read. Yet perhaps today, more so than any other era, we need to have ears to hear the warnings of Amos.

We live in a world of broken relationships, disappointment and confusion. So many people live lives devoid of meaning and purpose. What does the Church offer that people can’t find somewhere else? Jesus modelled how to do this really well. He lived a life of compassion. It is his example that we will look at in this sermon. He took time to understand and speak into the lives of everyone he came into contact with. BUT he loved them too much to leave them where they were. His words were kind and yet his direction was firm. How can we love God well in a hurting world?

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian writer spent years in a Siberian prison. At one point he lost all hope and decided to give up and die. His plan was to stop working out in the field, to lean on his shovel, and wait for the guards to come and beat him to death. However, when he stopped, another prisoner reached over with his shovel and quickly drew a cross at his feet, then erased it before a guard could see it. Solzhenitsyn later said that his entire being was energized by that little reminder of the hope and courage we have in Christ. He found the strength to continue because a fellow believer cared enough to remind him of our hope. In this sermon Neale Proellocks challenges and encourages us to be Agents of Hope.

How aware are we of what is going on around us? When we enter a situation we talk of it as needing to 'read the room' meaning; being observant, seeing body language, picking up on nuances and 'atmosphere' which is often hard to define. God’s love for us is unfailing and unparalleled. He came to die, and die for me, even choosing death on a cross. We can speak about it, and sing about it, but when we seek to believe it, truly believe it, nothing about God is quite the same. We need to allow the message of the Cross of Christ to inform and transform all our ideas of God.

Jesus was renowned for doing the unexpected. From feeding a crowd of 5000 with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish, turning water into wine, walking on water – these actions inspired and increased people’s faith. Why does God seem to act so differently in the Old Testament compared with the New Testament? It’s critical to consider the context and culture of the various events recorded throughout the Bible in answering this question. In this sermon we are delighted to welcome guest speaker Randy Edwards to HumeRidge where he will guide us through this process to discover God’s character.
About Randy:
Randy Edwards, accompanied by his wife Marie, arrived in Australia in 1977 to fill in as a lecturer at Kenmore Christian College in Brisbane. That year became 35 years during which he had two stints as Principal of the college, initiated the merger of Kenmore with the Sydney College, was integral in undertaking three complete revisions of the curriculum, and enabled the college to adopt a distance education programme that allowed students to remain in their home church where they were supported by those around them. Having obtained Masters degrees in both New and Old Testament, he sought to help students read scripture in its original context and then apply their learning in both churches and contemporary society. He has been particularly focused on preparing students for the changing world rather than just for the present. For over 18 years he led an alternative church whose focus was to reach those who would not attend a traditional church service. During that time, he and his wife also volunteered to help feed the homeless in Fortitude Valley on weekends and public holidays. Now retired, he tries to encourage the next generation of Christian leaders who seek to be relevant in a very fast changing world.

Why is there so much suffering in life? Every day we are inundated with news of wars, bullying, traffic accidents, deadly diseases and the list goes on and on. Personally, we might be facing illness, financial pressure, depression, relationship breakdown or be caring for an ageing parent. The question of suffering is one of the biggest barriers to faith in God. God is good, but evil is also real and has influence in the world for now. So, at first glance it seems that suffering gives us good reason to rule out God. But what if the opposite is true? In times like these it’s easy to believe hope is in short supply. Where do we find hope in the midst of so much uncertainty? In this sermon we are pleased to welcome back Tim Hanna to HumeRidge who will explore the real hope that comes from a new life with Jesus and the fresh eyes required to find this hope during the difficulties of life.
About Tim:
Tim currently works coaching, mentoring and consulting with leaders, churches and organisations, having recently transitioned from the role of CEO Compassion Australia, in which he served for 10 years.
Prior to that, Tim pastored three churches over 30 years in three different states of Australia, the last being Gateway Baptist Church in Brisbane. He taught at Australian College of Ministries (ACOM) and was CEO of Willow Creek Australia for 18 months. Tim has also taken up a part-time position with Churches of Christ in Queensland working in their Church and Community Engagement Team to further improve the Churches of Christ movement in Queensland.
Married to Chris, they raised 9 children and have 25 grandchildren at the latest count. Tim is a bit of a sports tragic, having played a lot of Aussie rules footy, cricket and tennis. He studied Economics at University, and later gained a Bachelor of Theology through the Melbourne College of Divinity and his Doctor of Ministry at Fuller Seminary in the US.
He has a passion for leaders, churches and organisations to flourish and make the best impact they can for the Kingdom of God.

About Murray:
Murray has been around the Toowoomba scene for quite a while now in various roles. He arrived in Toowoomba back in 1984 to establish the work of Scripture Union in the Darling Down and South-West Queensland. In 1989, he returned to teaching at Harristown SHS eventually becoming principal at Toowoomba SHS when the Mt Lofty and Wilsonton campuses were combined. In 2003, he left teaching and joined the Toowoomba City Council, later Toowoomba Regional Council, in a senior management role. In 2010, Murray headed into semi-retirement and now works part-time at USQ with beginning teachers, checks in on the grandkids and his elderly Mum and heads to the golf course whenever he can! During this time (2012-2017), he was able to engage in his passion for integrating work and faith and whole-life discipleship as Director of Malyon Workplace.

Chris is married to Rob Bullock, and they have three grown kids, two children in law and three grandchildren. They moved to Toowoomba from Brisbane early last year as all the kids moved to Toowoomba, and made HumeRidge their Church home. Chris recently completed a Master of Divinity, and she is releasing her first book early next year – Diamonds from the King - which is a book of reflections on ways that God has worked in her life. Chris is passionate about helping people develop a more intimate relationship with God, and she loves Mission and Cross-cultural engagement. Chris has walked with God since she was a little girl and loves the way that life with God always has new adventures and things to learn – it’s never boring, though it can certainly have its challenges! Chris has worked in various Christian roles, including as a School Chaplain and Missions Coordinator.

That first Christmas, a group of wise men from the East brought three gifts to honour the birth of a King: gold, frankincense and myrrh. These gifts were not only expensive, but were symbolic, and the significance of these gifts was prophetic. In a similar way to the wise men, we give gifts at Christmas time. The story of Christmas is a story of two kings. Jesus, God’s king, rules with love, humility, sacrifice, and costly grace. He is the great king David’s greatest son. The other king, Herod, was a ruthless neurotic who went into a state of meltdown with the news of the new-born King of the Jews. He refused to let go of control - a character trait found in all people. The central news of all of history was first delivered to lowly shepherds in the most spectacular way. The Fruits of the Spirit are attributes that develop in us as we allow God to cultivate the soil of our hearts - as we choose to allow the Spirit of God to lead us, we grow. As we read, pray and practise, we change - and it is then that these Fruits of the Spirit begin to develop in us. In this sermon Jenny Savill will look at Kindness, Goodness and Faithfulness. Kindness can change the trajectory of a person’s life. Goodness, together with kindness, is the expression of love in action. God displays faithfulness to us even when we are unfaithful. It is His faithfulness that leads us to repentance.

Paul says this is what happens as we allow God’s Spirit to live in and through us. God's Spirit produces a set of Christ-like qualities. In this sermon we look at the first two - Love and Joy. As followers of Jesus we are commanded to love, but are we also commanded to be joyful? Is joylessness a sin?

We have just finished a challenging series on putting First things First. How do we build on this foundational principle? Living our lives to glorify God is an ongoing challenge for all Christians. What makes it more difficult is that, ”we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). God is a loving and gracious God and He wants us to be in relationship with Him. Heb 1:3 tells us that “Christ is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being…”. Satan blinds the minds of those who don’t believe, whereas the message of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is to “….let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” In this sermon Graham Jones helps equip us to live a life where our thoughts and actions glorify God.'

It’s easy for us to have really good intentions about responding to God and getting involved but too many times we end up doing nothing. Our determination to do good is often overwhelmed and squashed by self-doubt and thoughts of what we offer is not good enough. This Sunday we will look at how Jesus used a ‘left-over lunch’ to show how He takes what we offer and uses it to do immeasurably more than we can imagine.

The story of the Rich Young Ruler (found in Mark 10:17-22) who approached Jesus with a question about Eternal Life is often seen simply as a story of possessions and our attachment to them. It is much more than that. It speaks more deeply about our propensity as human beings for control – how we love to be in charge of things and circumstances, and how surrender is often foreign to us and very difficult to do.

Step three of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) is to make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, but Jesus made it step one!
"And He (Jesus) said to all, If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and give up himself] and take up his cross daily and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also]. In the days following the events at the Cross, the disciples were at a loss. Jesus, the man they had followed for the last three years, who claimed to be the Son of God, who spoke so differently to the religious leaders of the day about the coming kingdom, had been killed and lay buried in another man's tomb.
But God's redemption plan didn't end on Friday. On that first Easter Sunday, two women went to visit the tomb. But the tomb was empty. And the body was gone. Christ was risen!

It was a day of confusion and uncertainty. Emotions were running high with events teetering on the edge of chaos. Unthinkable violence was carried out in a power struggle that had been going on since the dawn of time. But in the midst of the upheaval, God was at work. The road to Calvary where Jesus was crucified was marked with miracles.
So before rushing to the resurrection, let’s take a moment to slow down and notice how God’s plan played out on Good Friday.

The world is a mess. The mess is a result of sin. The temptation to sin is part of our lives every day. There are many who prefer not to see themselves as “sinners”, rather expressing their wrong attitude or behaviour as, “I made a mistake”, “I’m not perfect”, “I’m only human, or “it’s not really my fault, it’s just the way I am.” There are others that believe that they are okay with God because they live a good life, even better than some Christians they know. There is only one way to deal with sin. That event occurred over 2,000 years ago.

We hear the word 'blessed' thrown around a lot both inside, and outside the church, but what does it even mean? In 1 Peter 3:9 [MSG] we are called "to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing." but what does it look like to bless someone?

What is Satan’s paramount intent? To deny the world access to Jesus, to His saving grace, to the possibility of forgiveness and eternal life.

Prayer is a wonderful gift from God but unanswered prayers, especially when God seems silent or unresponsive to our pleas, can be incredibly painful. In these times we often question Gods love for us and His power to act. God is not offended by our questions or doubts, as these are often part of the journey toward a deeper trust in Him and an ever-increasing likeness to his son.
This Sunday we are joined by Phil Bignill, Senior Pastor from the Church Engagement team from Churches of Christ in Queensland. Phil has been married 30 years to Julie and they have 4 adult children, a daughter in law and one granddaughter. They live in Wurtulla on the Sunshine Coast and enjoy walking each day along the beach. Phil ministered in Cairns Church of Christ Church for 20 years and was a CofC Regional Engagement Partner in far north Queensland for 4 years.

The spiritual practice of contemplation is neither dated nor a new-age fantasy. For millennia, people of faith have used the practice of silence, solitude and meditation to connect to God and be fuelled for a life of ministry. The beauty of contemplative practices is that it reconnects us to who we are as children of God and challenges us to be people of being rather than doing. In an age that is obsessed with doing more to get more, we will explore what it would look like to be people who rest in the knowledge that God requires nothing more than our presence with him. It is in this knowledge that we are fuelled to be people who project the light that we receive to the world.
Lauren grew up at HumeRidge and when starting her Bachelor of Education at USQ, was put on staff in the youth ministry where she worked for eight years. In 2018, she moved to Pasadena, CA to study her Masters of Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. After receiving her degree, she has recently moved home to the Sunshine Coast where she hopes to be apart of building faith communities that give space for the marginalised and those who have been typically excluded from faith communities.
