Believe it or not, it’s easier to beat ourselves up all the time for not being good enough than to change our inner dialogue and give ourselves some grace. Self-kindness is the antidote to self-sabotage, whether the latter shows up in the form of unrealistic expectations, self-shaming or the comparison trap. The kinder we are with ourselves, the kinder we could show up to other people around us. Can you imagine a world where people are showing up with kindness to themselves and to each other? It’s a wonderful world that Thane Marcus Ringler begs us to envision in this episode.

The greatest leaders in the world have no reputation. Like Jesus, they don’t care for accolades or recognition. They simply follow God’s voice in serving Him and His people to the best of their abilities. But those leaders need to come from somewhere. They need to be lovingly cultivated to find their true identity under God’s guidance. This is where Norris Williams comes in, a cherry farmer who prunes not only fruit-bearing trees, but also emerging servant-leaders in the Kingdom of God. As a coach, Norris inspires and equips ordinary men and women to know their true identity and use it to bring about positive transformation in their respective areas of leadership. Joining Thane Marcus Ringler in this conversation, he talks about making the right things easy, living in the Kingdom, being a man of vision, what healthy masculinity looks like, identity versus roles, developing leaders of no reputation, tribalism and so much more.

The racial divide in America reemerges into the spotlight again with the recent turn of events. It is becoming essential for us to move towards racial reconciliation to achieve unity as a people. Josh Goertzen brings this message of unity in this conversation with Marcus Thane Ringer as they explore the issue of race in America, being a better neighbor, and how distance breeds indifference. Josh is a 25-year-old pastor from Hutchinson, Kansas. Making the big move to urban California with his wife, Erika, he is passionate about bringing the Gospel to poor communities in the inner city. He sees beauty in diversity and believes that unity can be achieved by celebrating it as a gift from God and connecting with different people with love and compassion. As we struggle for social justice, we should never forget the greater ministry of reconciling ourselves to God and each other.

In a world where information is right at our fingertips, where do we draw the line between taking in all that we can and exploring for ourselves what we could know? Do we outsource our thinking and simply accept what we've read or heard as the truth? Have we lost the ability to say "I don't know"? In another Couch Conversations episode, Thane Marcus Ringler and his wife, Evan Ryan Ringler, ponder on these questions and dive deep into the idea of being informed—what it means now, what good it does, and how it can be bad. Going through the COVID-19 pandemic, they then talk about depression, which is undeniably more felt in this time of quarantining and social distancing. They discuss the ways social media has made us feel small and how we can take that back. Imparting practical advice to help us grow in these areas, Thane and Evan then end with the importance of open-mindedness, of listening to others in full awareness and humility.

What if it were easy? At first blush, this question seems overly optimistic and almost like a fantasy. Yet this question has been powerful in Thane Marcus Ringler’s own life and thoughts this past month and he hope it can be for you as well. In this episode, Thane talks about making changes and shifting priorities and opens up about his personal experience with the question. The goal of asking this question is not to pretend that life is easy, that making change is easy, or that embracing discomfort and walking forward despite your fears is an easy thing to do. The point is things that are worthwhile and meaningful aren't easy, so the next time you find yourself paralyzed from the largeness of whatever it is you’re experiencing, ask yourself, “What if it were easy?”

From childhood, we've been taught to do things on our own and rely on our abilities to face challenges, but can we really do it alone? In this fellowship episode, keynote speaker and entrepreneur True Tamplin talks about reliance on God in all aspects of life. True opens up about what an inspired life looks like and how to balance confidence with humility in admitting that a "backup" is needed to succeed in life. His example is a testament that no matter how accomplished you are, it's not really all because of you. He also touches on entrepreneurship with a purpose and finding joy in seeing a change in people's lives.

Life is inevitably filled with tensions, and the best way to live in the midst of the tensions is with intentionality, that is, infusing intention into all we do. Someone living with intentionality so well is Houston Kraft. Houston is a speaker, curriculum developer, and kindness advocate who has spoken at over 600 events internationally. In 2016, he cofounded CharacterStrong, a curriculum and training that transforms the way schools teach the whole child through social-emotional learning, character education, and equipping educators with practical tools to create a compassionate culture on their campus daily. Today, Houston focuses on how they’re building strong character and sustainable growth in education. We also dive into various topics that include challenging our paradigms, empathy and building it through play, the current challenges facing education and the next generation, being helpful versus being right, the power of human connection, mentorship and fellowship, priorities and how boundaries help create compassion, listening and asking good questions, and so much more!

As Americans, we have a civic duty and responsibility to protect the freedoms that this country was founded upon. At its core, this original foundation is based upon the equality of all humans - the belief that every human being is created in the image of God, meaning that everyone has worth and value that cannot be taken away. Yet, it’s also an understanding that we are fallen humans and capable of much evil just as much as we are capable of incredible good. This two-fold view is what made America different from every prior form of government. However, in our current society, this freedom and original foundation rest in a perilous place as we have begun to spend all our energy pinpointing the flaws and finding ways to discredit others instead of admiring the good and praising the heroic. Don’t turn a blind eye to the hurt, pain, and injustice of our nation and our world. In this episode, Thane Marcus Ringler shifts the focus on liberty and equality for all as a beacon of hope.

TRACE is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter who was made to create music. Growing up in Orange County, California, the daughter of Carol Kim (known as "the Tina Turner of Vietnam"), TRACE never planned to follow her mother's footsteps and pursue a career in music. She picked up an acoustic guitar for the first time as a teenager, but didn't begin writing songs until her freshman year of college. TRACE found her voice in writing songs, and since then, music has become a personal calling that she hasn’t turned away from. In 2016, TRACE brought her first EP, Low, to life through a Kickstarter campaign. The 4-track project earned her comparisons to the “west-coast cool of Lana Del Rey” and the “R&B-kissed ruminations of James Blake,” as well as over 20M streams and her first record deal. In early 2018 TRACE made her Ultra Records debut with 3 singles and a partnership with the California chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) to raise awareness on anxiety in the entertainment industry. TRACE is set to release her next single August 9th. The song will be the third track off her sophomore EP, expected late summer/early fall of 2019. With over 55 million streams across her catalog, and press support from Refinery 29, Teen Vogue, NYLON, Forbes, Milk, HypeBeast, C-Heads Magazine, The Line of Best Fit and L’Officiel it’s clear that TRACE is a voice you can’t ignore. Philip De Courcy is the senior pastor of Kindred Community Church in Anaheim Hills, California, and speaker on the daily radio program, Know The Truth.

Philip was born in Belfast, Ireland, to Christian parents who instilled in him a love for the Lord, Jesus Christ. At sixteen years of age, Philip trusted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.

Growing up in a neighborhood where civil tension was commonplace, many of Philip’s friends became involved in acts of terrorism. As a result, Philip decided to serve as a part-time reserve police officer in the Royal Ulster Constabulary in North Belfast. Although some of his comrades were injured and even killed during that six-year period, Philip was unharmed. To this day, he believes God used this faith-building season to prepare him for pastoral ministry.

After receiving pastoral training, Philip spent six years shepherding the congregation of Carr Baptist Church in Lisburn, a suburb of Belfast. Then, in 1994,

Philip relocated his family to The United States, serving in churches in southern California and central Ohio. In 2007 Philip began his current ministry as senior pastor at Kindred Community Church.

The daily radio broadcast, Know The Truth, was launched in March 2010, on three local radio stations in southern California. The program features Philip’s expository Bible teaching and is hosted by broadcast veteran, Wayne Shepherd.

He and his wife, June have three grown daughters and one son-in law.

"Intention In The Tension" is one of the new motto's for our show that we are "re-branding" under for the year ahead.

It's a phrase that encapsulates what we face in life - a battle of reconciling tensions that are often irreconcilable. This is what creates the tension we can't avoid, but that isn't a bad thing. What it means to live in the midst of that tension is to have intention behind what you do and why you do it. This mantra (and t-shirt) is a visual and verbal way to encapsulate our heart in what we are doing with our show.

For All Seasons is a Christian pop/worship band out of Southern California. The band is comprised of Emily Hamilton (lead vocals, guitars, keys), Johnny Hamilton (drums), Jeff Luckey (guitars, keys, vocals), and Randy Charlson (bass, guitars).

The guiding vision for their band is: "our ability to create music isn't rooted in our circumstances or our emotions, our gifts or our talents. We worship, not because of how we feel or what we're going through; we worship because of who God is. He has proven faithful time and time again, and so we continually choose to seek Him - in joy and in pain - in every season. Regarding their music, "it's a sound that marries artfully-crafted lyrics with rock and modern pop. With vertically-slanted lyrics, the songs are born out of time spent with the Lord and real-life stories of the places where God has met the For All Seasons members."

In this interview, Jeff, Johnny, and Emily unpack a lot. From how their band originated, to what worship means at its core, to balancing strategy with authenticity, to the challenges faced in being full-time musicians, and much much more. There is so much here, you are going to want to listen to the full two hours.

In this episode Adam takes off the gloves and throws down some real talk. It's not everyday that you have deep conversations about things that matter, but this is one of those times. We all go through trials, we all doubt and experience cynicism and hopelessness at some point, and we all are seeking the Good Life. That's one thing this show is built on. We are trying to learn how to live a good life. But too often we pretend to have it all together.

If you don't have it all together, this episode is for you. If you do have it all together, pat yourself on the back and keep moving. We all struggle, but the meaning is in the striving, not the perfection. If life has gotten you down and you feel like you're alone in that struggle, listen to this conversation with Adam. May God use it to lift you up.

In this episode, Adam and Thane record their first book review episode. And what a book to talk about!

When Breath Becomes Air is the story of Paul Kalanithi - a man who was fascinated with the pursuit of finding meaning in life. He began his journey to find life's meaning in literature and human intellect. After seeing the fallacy of all knowledge and no experience, he redirected into the medical field (and specifically neurosurgery) in order to experience suffering and death firsthand. Near the end of his residency, he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, drastically changing his life from that point forward. He wrote this book during the remaining time he had left before passing away in March of 2015.

This book is a powerful depiction of what a purposeful and intentional life looks like. He displays amazing courage and honor by living a life of ceaseless striving, even when it seemed hopeless.

“It’s like going to sleep and having a dream, but you’re awake and you actually get to visualize things with way more detail - that’s what I love about film.” - Graham Kelley

In this interview with Graham and Ryan, we dive into a host of topics. From their unlikely friendship that led to the founding of NakNek, to each of their lowest moments in the NakNek journey thus far, to their production process, and much, much more.

They do a great job of highlighting the importance of integrity in all that you do, and help remind us all that success can only be achieved when you are concerned more about the client (customer) and maintaining your own personal character, rather than the bottom line.

In the world of choosing between pursuing your dreams or making a living, NakNek is an example of Up & Comers who are striving to marry the two.

“There’s nothing you can do to create success other than just being honest, have integrity, trusting and being pleasant to work around - that’s it.” - Graham Kelley

Why habits are important Habits are what make up our lives, and the reason LOOKING at them is so important right now is because we are at the Up and Comers stage of life. If we don't focus on what defines our life, we will fall into one of two alternatives: 1. Detachment and surrender - “do my time”; “the system can’t be changed”; “don’t have enough responsibility to make an impact”; minimal effort required to cash the paycheck - mentality 2. Overly ambitious and scatterbrained - “get rich quick”; “follow your passion”; application without solidification (sustainability)

Developing "right" habits (ones based on longterm goals and time-proven wisdom) And it all must be tied to your ultimate purpose/meaning in life! * “How you do anything is how you do everything.” * When it is disconnected, the habits will eventually die off

The definition of habits Merriam Webster — "7 a : a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance b : an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary"
The Description of Habits: how they shape the way we live our personal lives Thane's Habits * Reflection (journaling specifically; started out during professional golf as catalyst for growth and has become a keystone for all ares of life) * Meditation (my mind is constantly going/planning; this practice has provided the most “unseen” benefit throughout all of life - allows me to be more fully present) * Fitness/Exercise (generates energy, positivity, motivation, and longevity in all areas of life - even helps improve sleep!) * Purpose-driven pursuits (connecting all I do to my “why” - aka the gospel) * Starting and ending the day in God’s Word

Adam's Habits * Reading Bible in AM (keystone bcs foot soak, reading theology, studying the original languages all come too) * Pray on the way to work (keystone bcs it gets me in that mindset and I schedule my day with God in mind) * Clearing out inboxes in AM (keystone bcs I plan day in calendar and to-do list software, adding in emails to respond to, and review what I did yesterday; as well as saving articles for review for newsletter, which I do in downtime at work; asking myself the Ben Franklin question) * Read after supper (25 pages per day min outside of seminary, which gets jumpstarted then (vs tv)) * Journal at night (to review, asking myself the Ben Franklin question) * Exercise (walk, yoga, weights, etc. which is keystone to maintaining diet and health focus)

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity.” - Amelia Earhart Definition * Decision-making is..".In psychology, decision-making is regarded as the cognitive process resulting in the selection of a belief or a course of action among several alternative possibilities.” (Wikipedia). * Decision-making is either... + 1. The gut-level response we have to choose one path over another (System1). + 2. The active, critical-thinking process of applying wisdom to several options in order to find the best one (System 2)

Research * Start with WHY + What’s the purpose? + Famous Decisions: 1. JFK’s team deciding to have the top down on his car that he rode through the streets in - which led to his assassination 2. Rosa Parks deciding toast down on a bus and jumpstarting the civil rights revolution 3. MLK’s speech - deciding to go off his notes and talk about “I have a dream” * The psychology of decision making + Thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman. System 1 vs System 2 thinking. + We make decisions based on what we perceive as best and that is either an active perception (kaneman) or passive. Actively being aware of our biases is crucial * How we go about actively making choices + Get active - Don't settle for status quo...which will be a conglomerate of how your family and friends make decisions. Get active, stop apathy. Own your choices. + Determine your defaults + Determine other influences - Biases like advertisements, confirmation bias, etc. * (Re)Designing our Defaults + We have to redesign our lives so that we make better decisions by default + With bigger decisions, we need a framework for judging that becomes our default. We have to measure the options we have by the truth and our sense of self and calling. * Defining our Process to making a decision + Decision-Making Framework (From TRG blog posted last week) - Remove self from individual moment and look at big picture - Eliminate emotion as much as possible (and replace with rational logic) - Seek counsel, but don’t give up the decision-making responsibilities 1. Must seek counsel from the right people - experts, and those who have your best interests in mind 2. The best advisers will never make the decision for you - Trust your gut! (Arguably the hardest part) 1. If you have wrestled with the decision for long enough and still don’t have a clear answer, you will have a gut reaction (usually from early on in the process) that, if well-informed, will almost always be the right decision. 2. "The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity." –AMELIA EARHART - Never Look Back! 1. The only place to move towards after making a decision is forward! 2. http://www.thaneringlergolf.com/blog/2016/10/18/the-summer-of-2016

Answer to email question: 1. Discipline trumps motivation (and especially if you’re NOT type A) 1. Hebrews 12:3-13 2. Thus it comes down to creating the structures for success, and here are some helpful ways to do that: 1. 1. Start by journaling - figure out the things you know you need to do but aren’t yet doing 2. Think through/brainstorm what the obstacles are that are hindering success 3. Then craft a game plan for overcoming those obstacles 4. Finally, publicly communicate it in some way (accountability partners, talk to a mentor about it, talk with friends you see a lot about what you’re trying to do, etc. etc.) - helps us follow through because we all long to be consistent with what we say 5. And then, as Jocko poignantly stated - DO THE WORK! 3. At the end of the day, you are what you tell yourself you are. Meaning, we largely operate on the narrative that we are telling ourselves (if you say you aren’t a motivated person, you won’t be motivated). You won’t wake up one day and suddenly be motivated or disciplined, but, as you work on convincing your own mind of a new truth, you will slowly but surely creative a mindset of motivation, discipline, and a greater belief in your own capabilities!

Adam’s Topics 1. Why Grind? Find your why. 2. https://medium.com/@rudehunch/sentences-where-the-word-coffee-has-been-replaced-with-the-healing-power-of-crystals-7526ddb8eff4#.icqs195bx 3. Adam’s Topics: 1. Email on friends and friendship

1. Her argument: to avoid feelings of false guilt, we need to clearly distinguish friends from acquaintances.
2. My argument: I agree, but there are more than 2 categories (friends and acquaintances), so I have “tiers” of friends (Facebook friends, email friends, long distance friends, local friends, and then soul-mate like friends)
  1. Millennial weakness
    1. "Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol' days, when our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out." Those are the lyrics of a song called Stressed Out (by the great Twenty One Pilots) that has quickly become what The Atlantic calls an Anthem of Millennial Anxiety. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/03/one-thing-considered-stressed-out-an-anthem-of-millennial-anxiety/470034/
    2. http://babylonbee.com/news/millennial-diagnosed-tragic-inability-even/
    3. Anxiety: managing it from information overload. Lifehacker says "Don't Voluntarily Take on Other People's Anxiety if You Can Avoid It," but Paul said "bear one another's burdens" (Gal 6:2). I think both are right, but Lifehacker goes too far. We love and help others, but we realize our limitation and trust in God's sovereignty FOR them. After all, Jesus said "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" (Matt 6:25).
    4. Part of the fall, but comes from fear. We are always confused, Calvin

Thane’s Topics: 1. Selfishness 1. - is okay when you're alone/by yourself (goes along with recovery)
- is not okay whenever you are with others (generalization but is the better side to habitually err on)
- how to recognize your selfishness (from personal experience this week): are you consistently showing up late? Do your conversations mainly revolve around you or the person you are talking to? Do you more often adjust to others schedules or have them adjust to your own? 2. The Liturgy of Life 1. http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/liturgies-for-young-and-old/ 2. Learning to love God by practicing liturgy. The role of discipline and raw willpower in shaping the emotions and directing obedience. It’s not just making the right (moral) choices, it’s investing yourself into the right (redemptive) narrative. You do that through the imagination, developing a biblical imagination, imagining yourself as someone else—a someone who may actually be more YOU and you are right now. Like a Knight.

Thane’s Topics: 1. What is character? (Define). And is it something that can be developed/how? 1. 1 Tim. 6:6 - “Godliness with contentment is great gain" 2. “Never hope for it more than you work for it" 2. Jocks Willink Podcast with Tim Ferriss 1. "Motivation is unreliable and when you're counting on motivation to get your goals accomplished, you're likely going to fall short. You know what you have to do, go make yourself do it. Everybody wants some life-hack that eliminates the need to do the work, well I will tell you what: YOU NEED TO DO THE WORK. You gotta hold the line. You gotta make it happen yourself. You have to MAKE it happen, it's not gonna happen on its own. You have to make it happen, so dig in. Find the discipline, be the discipline, and accomplish the goals. THAT'S IT."

Born and raised in the small town of Hutchinson, Kansas, Chandler was blessed with two incredible parents and is one of four girls. She was bred to bleed crimson and blue, and attended the University of Kansas majoring in Visual Arts with an emphasis in printmaking, where her obsession with Jayhawk basketball only increased. After college Chandler continued her education through a graduate seminary program, The Kanakuk Institute. It was here that The Lord grew her heart to share the gospel through the gift of visual art and design. Shortly after K.I., she started interning remotely from Kansas City for a lifestyle and gift brand, Scarlet & Gold. Her internship turned into a full time design & styling position. Today, Chandler resides in Auburn, Alabama - the headquarters of Scarlet & Gold. Day to day you can find her anywhere from styling photoshoots, to teaching calligraphy, or even working with various mediums (like nail polish) to create a product. “ 'It’s a rare gift to pay your bills as you fill up your soul.’ - Jennie Allen. A rare gift. That is was my career as a creative is to me. People search their whole lives to find an occupation that gets them out of bed in the morning. I can honestly say, getting to design daily lights a fire in my soul. It is so sweet, so life-giving, so rare. To me it is so clearly God’s calling on my life.” - Chandler Mann To find more about Chandler and her work with Scarlet & Gold, check out the following links.
