This year, the September equinox arrives on the 22nd which marks the first day of fall for the northern hemisphere. For everyone north of the equator, the days will become shorter as we move into autumn.
The Summer Triangle is a useful guidepost to many constellations. A popular little pattern among stargazers is Delphinus the Dolphin.
Away from city lights and bright moonlight, this is the time of year to see the faint band of the Milky Way stretching right over the top of the sky. The Summer Milky Way is brighter and wider than its winter counterpart because this is when we're looking more toward the center of our galaxy.

Of all the things that move among the stars, earth orbiting satellites can be quite common to see. During the few hours after sunset or before sunrise, literally dozens of satellites can be seen as faint slow moving dots.
All this week, the sunlit side of the moon will seem to grow as the moon rises later each night. This period between First Quarter and Full is called the Waxing Gibbous Moon.

In the predawn hours of Friday, November 19, expect to be treated to a nearly-total eclipse of the moon. In this case, we’re talking over 97 percent eclipsed, which means the Earth’s shadow will cover all but a tiny sliver of the full moon.

We say the Moon “waxes” this week because its oval shape grows to become Full on August 22. As it slips further eastward among the stars each night, watch for it to pass below the planet Saturn on August 20 and underneath the brighter Jupiter on the 21st.

Early in the week of July 12, the Waxing Crescent Moon makes its appearance in the west after sunset. But when the moon looks like a thin crescent, there’s another feature to look for called Earthshine.
