The event "Feed Lee's Summit" is scheduled for Friday, November 15th, at the John Knox Pavilion. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for VIPs and at 6:00 PM for general admission. The event will feature live and silent auctions, entertainment from Fountain City Ivory's dueling piano group, and food from 16 local restaurants. The proceeds will support several local nonprofits, including One Good Meal, Meals on Wheels, Cold Water, Lee's Summit Social Services, and Boost for Success, which collectively serve over 600 residents in need each week.

15 years ago (well in two months), Candace Jennings told her dad she'd like to take over the Whistle Stop Coffee & Mercantile business in downtown. Some members of the family were selling the business, and something told Candace she needed to take it on for herself. And now, the business is a thriving piece of the downtown Lee's Summit landscape, and this month celebrated its 30th anniversary. Seth Allen had some very specific goals when he first opened Libations & Co. in downtown Lee's Summit. But, he knows both business and dreams can evolve. Just months after moving the business from 23 SW Third Street to 25 SW Third Street and doubling in size, he's now ready for another big step. The 1909 Club celebrates a soft opening this week and will be open to the public the following weekend. Named after the date of the building's original construction, Allen refers to the new venue as a music hall dedicated to high quality craft cocktails, music and a vibe you can't find anywhere else in town.

Once upon a time, Courtney Stoddard wanted to have a pub crawl in her hometown's downtown district. Nine years later, her little Christmas wish has grown into one of the metro's most popular events and has raised more than $100,000 for Hope House. This year, her goal was to add another $30,000 to that tally and she is oh-so-close. Musician, teacher and all-around good egg, Shawn Harrel joins the show (and brings along some students) talk about an upcoming jazz concert and the work his digital media students are doing in the community. In fact, Nick and Liesl didn't do anything for this show except talk. The episode was recorded at Summit Technology Academy by a team of Harrel's students. Harrel was joined on air by senior students Amya Morgan, Abby Oldham and Jacob Loesch. Student engineers for this episode were Hannah Jones and Alex King. Harrel and the Lee's Summit Jazz Orchestra will perform it's annual holiday concert at 5 p.m. Thursday, December 15 at Bridge Space in downtown Lee's Summit.

Council took in a long-awaited presentation on a Diversity & Inclusion study and talked about what's next for the City's economic development plans now that it has terminated its public service agreement with the Lee's Summit Economic Development Corporation. NICK: Visitors are invited to explore the new Downtown Sculpture Walk. The new outdoor public art exhibit will be on display through March 2021 and features artists from across the country. The project, led by the Lee’s Summit Arts Council, City of Lee’s Summit Cultural Arts Department and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street is planning for a rotation of sculptures each spring. The six sculptures currently on display were selected from a national call for artists and juried by members of the Arts Council and Downtown Main Street.
LIESL: A section of Southwest Murray Road south of Southwest Third Street is set to close tomorrow, June 30, and will remain closed for approximately 12 weeks for water line and road construction. Lee’s Summit metal artist Dave Eames has created ‘Infinite Harvest,’ a colorful, 11-foot-tall representation of a large bushel basket as a gateway piece to the Summit Orchards development located at Chipman and Ward roads near the Missouri Innovation Campus.

Today, I thought I would do something a little bit different and let you listen in on some of the young voices in our community. Last summer, a group of teens asked if they could take over the show for a few episodes to talk about some of the issues they were facing in our community. A year later, with the support of Lee’s Summit CARES, they have worked to launch their own podcast, I Can Relate. The topics are their own and so are the voices and the perspective.
In this, their first episode, the young hosts wanted to dig in on why it was important for their generation to find their voices and speak up on important issues. To help, they invited a peer from across the state line to tell his story of speaking up on mental health and suicide.

NICK: Following guidance from the Jackson County Health Department, the Lee’s Summit R7 School District announced last week its post-poned graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 will be held virtually on July 25. The video commencement will be held for Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit North, Lee’s Summit West and Summit Ridge Academy graduates. Ceremony times will be announced at a later date.
LIESL: As with so many other events, Special Olympics Missouri pivoted its Summer games to a virtual format this year. Eight students from the LSR7 School District earned honors at the games. Whether we’re talking about development or our public school district, housing, economics and race are issues our community is currently addressing. But are we doing it in a helpful and effective way? These are difficult issues, but necessary. In actual news, the duo discuses recent conceptual incentive request presentations to the Lee's Summit City Council. While no formal requests have been made, this is a good opportunity for the public to learn about proposed developments as well as gauge the Council's appetite for the use of incentives in these particular projects.

This week, Jason and Nick sit down with Eastland Giving Circle board member Christine Foresee and founding member, Jane Stepp. Eastland Giving Circle utilizes annual donations from its membership to award a grant to one organization each year. Foresee and Stepp talk about what drew them into this organization and how it chooses its annual grant recipients.
He was a star basketball player at Lee's Summit High School. He went on to become a teacher, and then an administrator in his home school district. His story, however is not as stereotypical as one might think. In fact, he says, we need to discard that stereotype altogether. Mayor Bill Baird said he was ready for a City Council conversation analyzing the City's return on investment as related to funding its Public Service Agreements. The use of plural in that sentence is a little gratuitous. The reason why? Council member Bob Johnson wasted little time two weeks ago changing discussion…
The budget has been at the forefront of any public conversation about our City Council for the past 8-to-10 months. And there's been no shortage of hyperbole and shots across one group or another's bow. Just this week, newly (re-) elected Council member Bob Johnson once again set his sights on the City's Public Service Agreements. But despite all the rancor, Jason and Nick point out there really aren't many differences between this year's proposed budget from the previous year. As Jason simply put it, "Ain't nobody gettin' those raises." So is the lack of drastic change good or bad? We don't yet know. But it's worth noting the change in language and tenor now that the election cycle is over.
