We must cultivate capacities that will support people and organizations to think from a whole person and whole systems perspective in a way that gets us deeply in touch with our own humanity and helps us heal our connection within systems, from the cellular level of our being to the cellular level of our humanity and yes, change starts with us. Nations don’t transform, people do and we can start there. Niphasone Souphom is born in Sayphone, Laos in 1977. She immigrated to the United States of America in 1986 with her family. She grew up in South Bend, WA and moved to the Washington D.C metropolitan area in the year 2000 where she currently resides with her husband and two sons. She was the first person in her family to achieve higher education. She graduated from Ohio University with a Masters of Arts in International Studies in the area of Southeast Asia and a Master of Science in Mild and Moderate Disability from John Hopkins University. She is current a special education resource teacher at Catherine T. Reed Elementary School. She has been working and teaching students with disability for the past 15 years. She is also one of the founding member and the current president of the Lao Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit, organization with a mission to promote, preserve, and transmit Lao culture through the arts.
The Lao Heritage Foundation (LHF) is based in the Washington, DC area as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity with the mission to preserve and promote Lao culture. Below are descriptions of our programs:
Summer Camp Program In addition to teaching music and dance year-round in the Washington, D.C. area, LHF runs a summer camp program in several communities across the U.S. We create standardized music education system (notation and teaching techniques), train teachers, directly teach students, and coordinate with master musicians and community leaders. Since 2006, we have grown from just a few students to nearly 200 students across the U.S., plus another 250 in Luang Prabang, Laos
The master musicians with whom we partner include National Heritage Fellow Bounxeung Synanonh (kaen), Thongtanh Souvannaphanh (poetry and strings), Sengdeuan Phengkeo (lanahd, kong wong, percussions, strings), Chy Her (lanahd, kong wong, percussions, strings), and Sinthavong Sengmounthong (lanahd, kong wong, percussions, strings, kaen).
Music Notation Program As Lao music is traditionally taught by ear, this art is in grave danger of fading away. As an ongoing effort, LHF is notating music and producing recordings of our partnering music masters. These steps will not only help to preserve the music, as but also to facilitate the teaching of it more on our sheet music, sor, kaen
Fine Arts We partner with Prince Nithakhong Somsanith, who documents and showcases the many treasures of Laos through his uniquely exquisite paintings and the royal art of gold-thread embroidery. Lastly, we partner a very talented artist/animator, Nor Sanavongsay, who works tirelessly to preserve (and promote) Xieng Mieng stories. Xieng Mieng is a witty folklore character well-loved by Laotians for many centuries.

SCN Change Agent Interview Series - Meet Paul Rice
Paul Rice is Founder & CEO of Fair Trade USA, the internationally-acclaimed social enterprise and leading certifier of Fair Trade products in North America. He launched the award-winning nonprofit organization in 1998 after spending 11 years organizing farmers in the highlands of Nicaragua. There he founded and led the country's first Fair Trade coffee export cooperative, which introduced him to the transformative power of market-based approaches to sustainable development. Paul then returned to the United States to obtain his MBA from Berkeley Haas with the dream of bringing Fair Trade to consumers, businesses and farmers worldwide.
People called him crazy in the beginning, but Paul had a bold vision for Fair Trade: from his years in Nicaragua, he knew that farmers and workers could learn to navigate the global market and empower themselves on a journey out of poverty. He believed that business could become a major force for social and environmental change, creating “shared value” and sustainability with profitability. He envisioned a consumer awakening and recognition that everyday purchases can impact the world for the better. In short, Paul believed deeply that the Fair Trade movement would have a major impact on the world and also help propel a much larger, lasting shift toward Conscious Capitalism.

https://soarcommunitynetwork.com
Rebecca Fitton explored different places and professional work. She grew up in Delaware then went to upstate New York for college. After graduating from Keuka College, then a women’s college, she returned to the University of Delaware for her Masters of Arts in International Relations. Then she headed for Michigan for careers in urban planning and healthcare administration and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Detroit. She continued her healthcare profession in Ohio and retired as President of CareView Home Health in Middletown.
As others who retire know, retirement is a busy time. She served on five non-profit boards bringing her business acumen to each. She and her husband Richard built a new home on his farm, and then he died suddenly. Recovery from his shocking death took time. Finally she realized that the time had come to remake herself. As the lyrics of the song go, “I’d built a life wrapped so tight it was strangling me.” Freedom was a spirit call from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Rebecca arrived in Santa Fe in 2008 and fell in love with the blue skies, clean mountain air, a vibrant community and the arts. Her first poem was written under a juniper tree. Today, she resides in Pennsylvania on the East Coast.

Mali Phonpadith interviews Julie Jakopic of iLeads Strategies.
In high school Julie Jakopic was an actor, president of the world affairs club, and a nationally ranked synchronized swimmer. She’s never fit neatly in anyone’s box. Not because she didn’t fit in one, but because she couldn’t or wouldn’t pick just one box. As a kid, that often meant she didn’t feel like she belonged anywhere. As an adult, that desired to explore more than one box, has been a gift. She has lead organizations in the nonprofit, public, and corporate sectors, dealing in everything from cosmetics to energy efficiency to human services. She gets to bring the best of one sector to bear in another, and she understands the crazy things that are pervasive across them all.
Over her career, she has been led by, and even been, the overwhelmed frantic executive; the controlling, people-pleasing, diva-martyr. It may get stuff done, but it is soul-killing for the team and the leader. For her, it created the need and the opportunity to look back at leadership journey that started at a swimming pool, often under water where no one can speak or hear you. Ultimately, she has learned that leadership is less about what you say and more about what you do.
If you lead from a place of deep mission-driven commitment, a place of joy and service, not only will your life be happier but you will be more productive. This is the understanding that drives her to help leaders lead better – in their careers and in the rest of their lives, too. Julie created iLead Strategies to share that knowledge broadly, to help leaders create workplaces that work for their workers, deliver outstanding results for their customers, and make a real and positive impact in the world.

"Each of us is on a path that is taking us somewhere. Moment-by-moment, day-by-day, we build our lives and shape our eternal future. What are you building with your life? Do you know where you’re headed? And do the things in which you’re investing time, energy, and money really matter? Life is fleeting. We get only one opportunity to make our mark. And we don’t have time on our hands. True progress is using our gifts and talents to fulfill our unique purpose and becoming all we were created to be—not simply checking off the boxes or leading a busy life. When we engage life with a reverse orientation of time elapsing, not accruing, we will make steady progress toward living purposefully as we wisely redeem the precious time we’ve been given."
