Across the world there’s been dismay at how Australians have seemingly welcomed the rise of authoritarianism to deal with the pandemic. Is there something in our cultural makeup or national history that’s enabled all of this? And are there parallels to other moments in our history?
To answer that question we turn to Dr Stephen Chavura — an historian and political studies lecturer — who has been shocked but not entirely surprised as to where we now find ourselves.
Dr Chavura teaches European and Australian history at Campion College. He has taught the philosophy of social science and political theory and several Australian universities. He has published in numerous journals including History of European Ideas, Journal of Religious History, and Australian Journal of Political Science. His most recent (co-authored) books are The Forgotten Menzies: The World Picture of Australia’s Longest Serving Prime Minister (MUP, 2021) and Reason, Religion, and the Australian Polity: A Secular State? (Routledge, 2019).
He is a contributor to The Australian and has also written for Spectator Australia and ABC Religion and Ethics.

TODAY the Livingstone Shire Council, located nearly 8 hours drive North of Brisbane, voted to become "pro choice" by rejecting government advice to medically discriminate between who they serve and employ in local businesses.
The Council gathered in an extraordinary council meeting with the sole purpose of sending a message to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk following a passionate meeting attended by over 500 people, a majority of whom were local business owners.
The Shire has achieved a remarkable demonstration of unity and mateship in the face of divisive fear-mongering by the Government. This movement was sparked by a handful of concerned locals who wanted to know what others thought, and got the ball rolling.

A year after coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China’s Xi declares 2020 a triumph.’
The Washington Post thus approvingly headlined the Communist Chinese dictator Xi’s New Year Address to celebrating crowds ignoring social distancing in the streets of Wuhan, the very place from where Communist China knowingly released a plague onto the US, Australia and an unsuspecting world.
A triumph indeed as Communist China’s candidate, as well as the Post’s and the other mainstream media’s candidate, is ensconced in the White House. This chillingly recalls Alexander Hamilton’s warning of the most likely corruption of the US electoral process, that a foreign power ‘gain an improper ascendant in our councils.’
Reliable pollsters consistently indicate there is no doubt in the minds of many millions that Donald Trump won the Presidential election. Indeed, it is reasonable to conclude that any fair person, studying reports of the several challenges to the election would agree there are mountains of highly persuasive supporting evidence, direct and circumstantial.
To an Australian, the coup de grâce must be the contrived absence of and later, obstacles to republican scrutineers (observers) , something totally unacceptable in the land where the secret or Australian ballot was devised.
Indicative of the corruption of much of the mainstream media has been the shocking practice of preceding references to allegations of fraud with the adjective ‘baseless’ or some synonym, contrasting with the enthusiastically endorsed reporting over four years of demonstrably groundless claims against the President and in particular in relation to Russian collusion.
That the Supreme Court and lesser courts have almost invariably refused to hear the evidence, but found technicalities for not so doing, reflects on if not the independence, the lack of courage of too many of the judges. This is admittedly in a country where Democrat-aligned Marxist paramilitaries have run rampant with impunity during the year in Democrat-run cities.
Sadly, with Vice President Pence declining to test his constitutional powers to the full, the elections in the key battleground states are unlikely to be the subject of an urgent and genuine audit nor their legislatures able to rectify any inappropriate certification .
The result then, may well be the first-ever fulfilment of Hamilton’s warning.

"The hallmark of a dictatorship is to deny citizens the universally recognized right to leave the country." • WATCH at http://goodsauce.news/covid-19-travel-ban-unlawful-take-back-your-country-3/ • "Because the National Cabinet has no place in the Constitution, its decisions are effected by ministers making inadequately scrutinised subordinate legislation.
One example is the Stalinist decision to refuse to allow citizens to leave the country. Exercising a power under the Biosecurity Act ‘to prevent or control the spread’ of the virus ‘to another country’, the Health Minister on 25 March decreed that an Australian citizen ‘must not leave Australian territory as a passenger’ without satisfying some faceless bureaucrat that he or she has ‘a ‘compelling reason’ to leave.
The reasons are narrowed down on the official website. Officials and businesspeople apart, ‘compelling reasons’ are limited to medical treatment not available in Australia or on compassionate or humanitarian grounds. According to reports, these take time and are rarely granted.
This almost blanket ban on travelling is beyond the narrow power Parliament gave the minister to stop the spread of the virus to another country. This is a funnel the size of which constrains the minister, whatever the National Cabinet wants, to make subordinate legislation of no greater width. .He could have quite properly required that people leaving be tested.. But like a Stalinist state, you can’t leave without the agreement of some faceless bureaucrat.
This tyrannical requirement could be as much an actionable misfeasance in public office as was the Gillard government’s totally unnecessarily and legally unjustifiable total ban on the export of live cattle to Indonesia.
