Kevin Rempel is a 2013 World Champion and 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey who has an incredible story of overcoming a tremendous amount of adversity.
Paralyzed after a motocross crash in 2006, Kevin had to face unsurmountable odds while learning to walk again at the age of 23. Adding to this, Kevin had to deal with his father, Gerry, who also was living in a wheelchair. While deer hunting, Gerry fell from a tree leaving him a complete paraplegic one year from retirement. Unfortunately Gerry couldn’t deal with living with his circumstances and took his own life in July 2007.
That following year, “Remps” as he likes to be called by his friends, found sledge hockey and set his sights on making Team Canada and playing in the Paralympics. Since then he has travelled the world, inspired thousands of people, and has published his autobiography titled "Still Standing - When You Have Every Reason To Give Up, Keep Going"
Kevin’s story has been featured around the world on TSN, BBC Sport, CBC and CTV. To this day Kevin still loves to ride his motorcycle and is focused on helping grow the sport of sledge hockey through his newest venture, the Sledge Hockey Experience.

After his college career Matt received a contract in the Washington Capitals Organization where he played for the Portland Pirates and then went on to play Pro Hockey in Europe. Following his return to the United States, Matt played 4 seasons with Hershey Bears and South Carolina Stingrays. During his professional playing career Matt was a part of 4 Championship teams, received numerous team MVP and Offensive awards, and was coached by several current NHL coaches.

Brian is a guy who I've been following for some time now, and when I recently found out that not only was he a coach, but also has a degree in psychology I know he was someone I needed to chat with more and have on the podcast. In this episode of the podcast I sit down and chat with coach Pete Kamman from Elevated hockey. Pete's a guy who I honestly didn't know much about before sitting down and recording this podcast, but quickly found out how much passion he had for the game and some of the things that he has down to grown the game in non traditional hockey markets such India and Africa. He's currently tackling the hockey world in Montana and doing a great job in the process.
He's also a guy who's extremely passionate about growing the game at a grassroots level, and much like myself he really enjoys getting out there and working with the young guns and takes great pride in not only seeing them improve their skills but more importantly enjoy the game.
If you're into hockey and enjoy a good travel story then this podcast is for you! Thanks again for the time coach Pete! until the next one.
Coach Matt
In this episode of the podcast I sit down with former professional hockey player and designer of the Mars Blade Roller Frame Per Mars.
Per grew up playing hockey in a small town in Sweden and then went on to play juniors in the United States and even got himself drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
A back injury forced Per to retire, but it also forced him to think about a new way of training and also a new way of making a living and spending his time, and thats where the Mars Blades come into the picture. We talk about how he came up with the original idea, his time playing hockey in the States and in Sweden, and he also shares some of his thoughts on kids training year round and how he used to spend his summers growing up.
This is a great episode with a great guy who really understands the game and what it takes to play at the top level.

In this episode of the podcast I welcome back the first guest I ever had on the show John kennedy Jr. John is currently living, coaching and growing the game of hockey down under in Australia, and is one of the most passionate and dedicated coaches there are in the game today.
During our conversations we talk about what it means to engineer a "complete athlete" As well as share some of our thoughts and ideas about things coaches new to the game can do to grown their confidence and presence out on the ice.
Coaching isn't easy, it can be very challenging and even lonely at times, and for that reason I really enjoy having other intelligent coaches on the podcast and getting the opportunity to pick their brains and learn a little bit more about their own coaching styles and philosophies.
Thanks again to John for sharing his time and will we talk to you guys at the next one!
Take care,
Matt
This was an interesting one and I knew it would be. Justin is a kid who grew up playing hockey in Arizona. Moved up to Canada to play his Junior hockey. And then went on to play professionally in the US, Russia and now most recently in France.
He’s also a guy who has a lot of interests outside of hockey and I respect that about him. We chat about everything he’s into and what’s next for him. We also exchange panic attack stories and talk about how taxing chasing the hockey dream can be on one’s mental state and why it’s important to continually be aware of it and take care or yourself first.
Thanks again my friend for taking the time. I appreciate your work and I’ll see ya at the next one!
In this episode of the podcast I get the opportunity to sit down and chat with KHL skills and development coach Ted Suihkonen. Ted is a guy I've been trying to coordinate a podcast with for some time now, he's a coach Ive followed since I got into the game, someone I have a tremendous amount of respect for and someone I've learned a lot from along my own coaching journey.
During our conversation we discuss what it was like growing up and playing hockey in Minnesota, and having the opportunity to play high school hockey in front of 18,000 people. We also get into how he got into coaching, some of his coaching philosophies and how he found his way to Russia where he is now the skills and development coach for HC Lokomotiv in he KHL.
Like I said Ted is a guy that I have been following and leaning from for a while now, so it was an honour to have him on the podcast and talk some shop. He is a guy that does things the "right way" and a guy that has worked for and earned all the success that is coming his way today. Ted is someone that I looked up to in the coaching world not just because of where he is, but more so because of how he carries himself and how he got there.
I know you guys will enjoy this one, and like always thanks for stopping by and taking in interest in what it is we are trying do here!
Until the next one,
Happy Training
Matt
In this episode of the podcast I sit down and chat with one of my favourite guys in the hockey world, former professional hockey player and CO-Founder of a hockey company called Buttendz Robert LaLonde.
We talk about all things hockey in this one and dive into his playing career when I ask him how close he came to actually making to the NHL. You see Rob spent his entire career playing in the ECHL and getting a handful of call ups to the American League where he was realistically one step away from accomplishing every kids dream of playing in the NHL. Exciting right? We go over what that was like being so close, not only physically but emotionally as well, where one day your up and the next your down, literally.
We also talk about how he came up with the idea for his company Buttendz. And how his passion for the game of hockey has carried over into his business, and why trusting and believing in yourself and your own intuition is not only important on the ice but off it as well.
I appreciate Rob giving me some of his time today and I look forward to getting him back on the podcast and doing it again soon!
Until the next one,
Happy Training
Matt
In this episode of the podcast I share a few thoughts on why I think goal setting is important for hockey players, and especially hockey players who are looking to accomplish big things and take their games to the next level.
I also go over 3 tips to make sure your goal not only gets set but it also gets reached. I talk about the importance of writing it down, seeing it your mind and truly believing that it can happen. I go over why staying consistent and chipping away day after day is crucial to your success. And why you should really start to enjoy the process of putting in the work every day, while at the same time being grateful for the opportunity to chase down your hockey dreams on a daily basis.
I hope you enjoyed this episode of the podcast and we will see you at the next one!
Happy Training,
Matt
In this episode of the podcast I answer a question from one of our Hockeyprotraining.com members regarding what foods to eat before, during and after games. I also share a few tips and ideas on how you can get your team, your friends or even your family to start making healthier choices without coming off as pushy or preachy.
Changing the way I eat and paying attention to whats foods went into my body and more importantly why? Not only changed how I felt on the ice, but also improved every single aspect of my life off it as well. Knowing what the right foods to eat in today’s none stop fad diet society can be very confusing and I get that, In this episode I hope to clear up some of that confusion. I hope you enjoy it, and if you have any further diet or nutrition related questions don’t hesitate to click reply and hit me up.
Until the next one. Happy training, Coach Matt
In this episode of the podcast I talk about how to get the most of out of your practices and find ways to improve upon your individual skills at all times. I also share a few tips with you guys on how to improve your speed with the puck, and making sure that we’re moving our feet and skating just as fast with it as without it.
I also share a few things I’ve learned transitioning from a player to a coach and a few of the attributes that I brought with me from my playing days into my now coaching career.
Hope you guys enjoyed this episode of the podcast and we will see you at the next one!
Happy Training,
Matt
In this episode of the podcast I sit down with my buddy and professional hockey player Jake Newton. I had Jake on the podcast back on episode two and near the end of the first show we started really getting into the mindset required to become a professional hockey player, and an overall well rounded and happy person. I found this topic to be a very interesting one and I know many others do as well. So I decided it would be a good idea to get him back on the show, dive a little deeper and share with you guys a few ways you can start changing the way you think, for the better.
Jake credits a lot of his success this season to the work that he’s put in not in the gym or on the ice, but the work that he has put into himself and the way that he thinks about and see’s the game. As he mentions during the podcast, at some levels every hockey player is very close when we talk about the physical aspect of the game, but what sets players apart is the mental aspect and the players ability to show up and perform day after day no matter what. And I couldn’t agree more. We all go through struggles in life and having the tools to be able to deal with those struggles is going to be crucial in determining how far and how well your career is going to go.
I hope you guys enjoyed this episode of the podcast, I know I really enjoyed sitting down and having this conversation with Jake and I look forward to many more to come.
Until the next one.
Happy training,
Coach Matt
In this episode of the podcast I answer the question:
“How can I be a better defensive player. Im a center with speed, but when the puck is cleared out of the offensive zone I have trouble jumping back into the play, back checking and I sometimes arrive into the zone late. Is there something that I should be doing in order to be faster at transitioning to defence after I turn the puck over”?
I share 3 simple adjustments that you can make to your game that will allow you to be a more valuable player to your hockey team defensively and all over the ice. Scoring goals is sweet, but if we can also take pride in keeping them out of our net it can often times but sweeter. The less goals we allow, the less goals we have to now score to win the game, make sense?
I also go over 3 “little things” that you can be doing during the coarse of a game defensively that will show not only your teammates but your coach as well that your serious about taking care of your own end and serious about winning games. Once you start adding these little elements to your game you will gain the confidence of your coach and start seeing more ice time and in all situations.
I hope you guys enjoyed this episode of the podcast and we will see you at the next one.
Happy Training,
Coach Matt
On this week’s episode of the HPT Podcast I share the story of how I got to Europe to play hockey in the first place. What it was like. And how you can do the same.
I also talk about what to do and how to react when you’re the odd man out or a healthy scratch. So many players let this affect them for way longer than it should and don’t bounce back and respond appropriately. I share with you a few ways you can do so and make sure that it never happens again.
I also share with you a quick tip for improving shot accuracy. Its something a lot of players struggle with and don’t work on enough. Having the hardest shot in hockey is irrelevant if it never hits the net. Remember that!
I hope you guys enjoyed this episode and are paying attention to the little things I say that you can be adding to your game, not only physically but mentally as well. If you have any questions you would like answered on the show hit up me and ill do my best to get to them.
Happy training!
Matt
In this weeks episode of the podcast I go through a few questions from Instagram. One that kept popping up was “How do I score more goals” What can a player do when they’re struggling and looking to get out of a slump and back on the score sheet. I share a few of the things that helped me get going when I was struggling and give you a few tips that I think might help you do the same.
I also talk about ways to overcome insecurities in your decision making process and how to play with more confidence and also being more sure of yourself when handling the puck. Confidence is king when looking to be successful in anything in life, and hockey is no different. I drop a few tips on you that I know will help build your confidence and keep your game going in the right direction.
I hope you enjoy the episode and we will see you at the next one!

"To say My hometown wasn’t a hockey hotbed is putting it very lightly. I can tell you one thing for sure; I am the first ever professional hockey player to come from San Jacinto, California. If you have never heard of it, I completely understand. Let’s just say no one would ever vacation there. The hockey part of my life comes from my mom’s Canadian blood. Three of my four siblings were born there, and we bounced around from Canada to the US up until I was two years old. My brothers and sister played hockey, so it was a path that was sort of laid out for me at a young age. Because we lived in California, there wasn’t much ice around, so we all played roller hockey. At the age of ten, I switched over to ice and started my journey as a California hockey player. It has been the hardest journey of my life, but one I am grateful for, as it has shaped me into who I am today"
