I have always wanted to know how do boss women do it, juggling being a mom and also building a business empire. Like many women who are entrepreneurs I've struggled with the back and forth of mom-guilt, wondering if I'm giving the business enough and wondering if I've given myself enough. So, it's needless to say that I was delighted when The Lola co-founder, Eileen Lee, agreed to sit down with me and discuss her journey of motherhood and leaving corporate America to build a work culture that fits with her life and personal mission.Suffering from lack of purpose early in her career as a corporate management consultant, Eileen switched gears and started a company that grew nationally to help recruit recent college graduates into startups called Venture for America. She quickly realized a lot of the challenges women face in the corporate world were alive and well in the startup environment. As COO of Venture for America, she made an impact by creating an internal women’s and diversity initiative to support 1,000+ Fellows and aspiring entrepreneurs and a supportive culture with a benefits program that was second to none regarding parental leave for her 30+ and growing team. However, Eileen knew starting a family of her own meant she needed to find a better way to work and became committed to being purposeful with her next company she wanted to build.Sit back and enjoy my chat with Eileen Lee.

In today's episode I sit down with my good friend, Crystal and we talk about her decision to be child free by choice. Voluntary childlessness, also called being childfree, describes the voluntary choice not to have children. A new study by the Pew Research Center surveyed over 3,800 Americans ages 18 to 49. It found that among non-parents in this cohort, 44% said it's not too likely or not likely at all they'll have kids someday. That's up by 7 percentage points from the 37% of childless adults who said the same in 2018 (Business Insider).
Millennials are choosing not to have children due to climate change, inflation, student loan debt, child-care expenses, mental health, racism and more. Crystal shares her thoughts on her decision and her response to those that ask her "why don't you have some babies". We also discuss how we're moving into a new age of women no longer having the choice to choose.

In Part 1 of Roe vs. Wade and Maternal Mental Health, I talk with Atlanta Perinatal Mental Health Therapist, Elizabeth O’Brien. We talk about feeling the impact of the overturn not only with our clients, but also with ourselves as clinicians. Statistics and facts that we discuss:
-1 in 4 women have experienced an abortion (Guttmacher Institute) -That includes women from all backgrounds. But statistics show women who receive abortions in the United States are more likely to be unmarried; to be in their 20s; to have low incomes; and to already have a child. (NYT) -A full abortion ban could further increase Black maternal deaths by 33%, compared to a 21% increase for the overall population, the Duke study found.
In our discussion we chat about how to take care of ourselves and what we can offer clients who are also feeling helpless during this unprecedented time. Elizabeth also does an amazing job talking about advocacy and taking an innovative approach to fight for our reproductive rights.

During our chat, Mica and I talk about black maternal mental health and the disparities in the state of Georgia. She talks about her own birthing experiences with both of her children and how maternal health became her calling. Several mothers and birthing parents struggle with their postpartum bodies and being able to accept their changing bodies through pregnancy and afterwards. In this episode, I sit down with therapist, certified intuitive eating counselor and holistic health coach, Katie Raskin, to talk about the challenges associated with many mothers attempting to "snap back". Several mothers may greatly dislike their postpartum bodies and it can have an effect on their self-esteem and their ability to be intimate with their partners. Katie shares several tips and resources to help birthing parents push through the negative self talk, give grace, and develop a better relationship with their bodies and food.

In today's episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Nigerian-American father, Chiedu Areh. We discuss how he's always wanted to be a father and when granted the opportunity with his daughter, he was up for the challenge. It was the unexpected birth of his second child that caught him off guard and put him in a place of growth, reflection, and vulnerability. According to Postpartum Support International, one in ten dads gets postpartum depression, and up to 18% develop a clinically significant anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder at some point during the pregnancy or the first year postpartum. The challenges of black fatherhood aren't always discussed and I'm fortunate to have the chance of interviewing an amazing one.

In today’s episode I talk motherhood with Ebony Foreman, a boy mom of two. Ebony shares the challenges she face with trying to conceive and how anxiety was a thief of job during her first pregnancy. After having two babies, she took a moment to re-evaluate her needs and how she could get to being the healthiest version of herself. Discipline, dedication, and grace assisted Ebony to make her workouts apart of her day-to-day routine. We so often lose ourselves in motherhood, but its so important to remember the woman that we were before becoming a parent. Keeping our goals, our self-care, and our own desire in the forefront is so important in order to show up as the best parent that we can be.

In this episode I sit down with the awe-inspiring and incredibly sweet, RaQuita Weathers. She is the founder and creator of both Belle Rouge Photography and Lifestylish Magazine. We talked about her experience with mothering two kiddos all while holding down the main job and expanding her many side hustles. My good friend, Candace Johnson, and I meet up on an early Saturday morning to catch the first show of the day of RESPECT (trying to be as safe and careful as possible in these variant streets). We're both Aretha fans and I knew when it was announced that Jennifer Hudson would be playing Aretha, I had to get my ticket for opening weekend. During this episode, Candace and I sit out on the patio of Chicken Biddy having brunch and discussing our candid thoughts of the movie from the acting, costuming, story (Aretha became a mother at 12 years old) and Marlon Wayans both darn near stealing the show. We also break down our thoughts on Da Baby, Nick Cannon and other pop culture news. Tune in!

I sit down with author, fellow therapist, and mother, Dr. January Few, as she talks about her navigating motherhood and marriage at a young age while building a career and furthering her education. January gets candid about her struggles during her postpartum period and how she had to be transparent with her friends to discuss her needs, how she wanted to be supported, and how some friendships didn't make it to the next chapter of her life. She also talks about working on her marriage after motherhood, deciding to have a third child when not feeling like the door to having more kids was fully closed, and how she is still learning how to be content with her own company. I truly enjoyed listening to January's honesty as she was vulnerable in sharing her story and also talking about her recent book release, Pretty Introspection. Pretty Introspection is a reflection of her own personal self work, while also giving guidance to readers on how they can be self-reflective as well. Have a listen to an empowering episode!

She's an educator, she's a realtor, she's pursuing her doctorate's degree, and she also owns an event planning company called, Pink Carpet, LLC. One would ask how does she do it all? Sooooooo.......one of my best friends asked me, "Have you watched Sex/Life on Netflix yet? You should totally watch it." Then a week later another friend texted, "Have you watched Sex/Life yet? It's about a motherhood and how her life changes after she has kids. Oh, and there's a lot of sex." and then I go to my skin appointment and she asks, "Have you watched Sex/Life yet?"....which led me to, okay, let me watch this much talked about film. So, I did and then I sat down and discussed the film with sex therapist, Unika Nelson. If you want to hear our thoughts and commentary, head over to the podcast to catch the latest episode. We really get into it!
Have you watched the film? If so, what were your thoughts?
Show Synopsis: Stuck at home with a new baby and unfulfilled by her sex life with Cooper, Billie's consumed with explicit flashbacks of sex with Brad — a leather-jacketed bad boy who frequently gave Billie neon-lit orgasms in nightclubs, stairwells and elevators. Sex/Life poses all kinds of worthy (though Carrie Bradshaw-esque) questions about Billie's pleasure. (Can you have a great marriage without great sex? What does it mean to fantasies about an ex?)
I sit down with British born mum, Lisa Baker, and she shares her story of growing up as a child of a celebrity, traveling the world with music being a huge prop in the background, and knowing early on that she wanted to be a mother. Not all of us begin our motherhood journey early. According to the recent US Census, more birthing parents are choosing to become parents at ages 30-38. Based on old medical terms, doctors used to refer to pregnancies that happened in women over the age of 35 as "geriatric pregnancies". Lisa gave birth to her son, Hudson, later in life and now pregnant with her second in her early 40's she refutes the term, geriatric pregnancy. She shares how she always embraced the idea of motherhood regardless of her age and if age played any factor, it was influencing how many children she had. She also shares the challenges she faced in having a C-Section and how her husband was incredible support for her during this very difficult time.

I had the pleasure of having a conversation with the incredibly talented Sophia Barrett, about her journey to motherhood. She talks about her early childhood experiences, being a child of immigrant parents and the struggles of growing up in Massachusetts. Sophia was candid and honest about her difficulty to accept her diagnosis of infertility and how she viewed herself as a woman. But the powerful piece that she shares was how becoming a foster parent shifted her view of motherhood and led her to adopt her daughter, Emi. She also talks about balancing being a wife, mother, and a business owner of the hottest photography studio in Atlanta, Ga. I also talk about my personal experience with booking Sophia to capture my family portraits and how I wish I could gift this experience to every woman I know. Black women experience infertility at almost 2x the rate of our counterparts and yet we are least likely to seek treatment. In today’s episode, I’m chatting with The Broken Brown Egg Founder, Regina Townsend. We discuss her own journey into motherhood from trying to conceive, learning of a medical diagnosis (hypothyroidism, PCOS, blocked Fallopian tubes, and Type 2 diabetes), and accepting the path of IVF and all of the challenges associated with that. Regina talks mental health, reproductive health and creating a space for black women to share in their experience of infertility. Her website The Broken Brown Egg is not only a place where women who are trying to conceive can go to read Regina’s blog, but also a place where they can learn about the many resources available to them such as financial assistance for IVF, information on donor eggs, black reproductive endocrinologist, support groups and so much more.
As Regina says in our conversation, it’s time to talk about infertility. The more women can feel comfortable in sharing their stories, the less shame there is to be associated with it.

It feels SO good to be back. After taking a small break to continue to expand my business and get my kids settled into school, I'm ready to get back to our candid conversations about maternal mental health and womanhood. In today's catch-up, I talked about the heaviness I feel in being a black woman these days, the inspiring work of certified doula, Dustin Young, Ava Duvernay's chat about how her mother was able to push thru, my review of Master of None Season 3 ( I loved it!), and how writing is feeding my soul right now. This season we'll be talking about infertility, unexpected births, reproductive health and much more!
In today's episode, I sit down with Hyacinth Powell and we discuss several challenges she faced during her motherhood journey. She talks about her teenage pregnancy, creating her village, an unexpected medical diagnosis, trauma, and how she found her way to healing. Being that it's maternal mental health week, Hyacinth describes how she was once at a crossroads in her life where she knew she had to put herself first, get better or she wasn't going to be able to be the mother that she wanted to be. It's a great reminder that sometimes by being selfish can be the most rewarding and beneficial decision that we can make in our lives. Through a move to Arizona, working through her trauma, and going to therapy she's able to help others along the way. She's a health coach, an author, and the creator of Hykes to Heal.

In celebration of Women's History Month, my bestie-sista-friend, Jay, stops by to have a chat with me about the moment when we figured out that we were more than enough in our careers. Pay inequality is something that is constant fight and battle for women across the United States. According to the U.S. Census, on average, Black women were paid 63% of what non-Hispanic white men were paid in 2019. That means it takes the typical Black woman 19 months to be paid what the average white man takes home in 12 months. That’s even worse than the national earnings ratio for all women, 82%, as reported in AAUW’s The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap. We talk about the people that helped us along the way and the moments that affirmed us to keep pushing forward. And the book by Elaine Welteroth, More Than Enough, the solidified the journey to break glass ceilings.
Share a time when you were reminded that you were more than enough and you pushed through!

Aaron also gives style tips to mothers who are breastfeeding and want to looking fashionable, but also want to be functional. And fashion advice for new moms who want to embrace their new mom bodies. A HUGE gem that I took away from our conversation is how Aaron describes that she was raised by a group of women who embraced "radical-ness" which inspired her to define motherhood on her own terms. Sit back and have a listen and enjoy!

Ciara Bird is an artist, designer, natural healing practitioner and most importantly, a mother. I've loved all of Ciara's work for several years now and she was even pivotal in the branding of Push Thru, which she and I talked about during her interview. With me loving everything she's ever created I knew that I was going to love hearing about her motherhood journey. Ciara talks about her natural deliveries of both of her sons, the importance of having a doula and a home-birth. She also shares about her postpartum experience and the juggle of managing two little ones as the world began to shut down in the midst of a pandemic. Something so fascinating about Ciara is also the fact that she's a world traveler with her children. She spent a significant amount of time in Bali after her first was born and then during the recording of our interview she and her family had just settled into Senegal, Africa. Ciara also shares how her spiritual work and her awaken-ness has also played a key role in her rise into motherhood. One of the big take-aways I took from our discussion is how she plans on preparing her babies for the world. Sit back and have a listen to a phenomenal conversation with a mother I truly admire and adore.

Mom shaming is something that many mothers encounter. People often have their opinions on how a mother should behave or spend their free time. In this episode, I interview mother, entrepreneur, and therapist, Katrina Pointer who talks about how self-care is essential to her life. She discusses her journey through motherhood, how support from her mother has been important, and how postpartum depression was something that she battled soon after giving birth to her daughter. We have a candid conversation about how doing what's best for you as a mother is important regardless of other's opinions. How you show up as a mom is rooted in how well you take care of yourself. Redefining motherhood on your own terms is something we all do. Kick back and have a listen.

Eren is a journalist and postpartum depression/anxiety survivor as well as the creator of "Good Moms Have Bad Days: Understanding Postpartum Depression”. The two of us talk about her postpartum experience with both of her babies and the fact that it was her husband telling her “you need to get help” that sparked her to reach out to a therapist. We discuss breaking the stigma of mental health for mothers, utilizing the remarkable resource that is Postpartum Support International, and how getting on medication helped her cope with her postpartum symptoms. This was an unbelievable discussion between the two of us because these are the conversations that aren’t often had. In an effort to break the stigma and help mothers overcome the shame, more talks like this have to be had. Just because a mother has a bad day doesn’t mean that she is a bad mother.

In this week's episode I sit down with my dear sis-in-law, Pauline. She talks about dedicating her life to her children and even though she is tasked with several responsibilities, she still finds time to carve out for herself. Pauline is a successful author that has released several riveting novels and she is an example of how mothers can still find time to carve out space for themselves. She goes through her day-to-day and how she strategically meets the needs of her family, while also getting up in the early hours of the morning to write out a few chapters for her latest novel. Self-care comes in many forms and creativity is how Pauline finds hers.

In this week’s episode I have the honor of interviewing the critically acclaimed author, Arah Iloabugichukwu. Her new book, Of Mothers & Daughters, is our book of the month and during our discussion we dive into what inspired her to write this vulnerable yet compelling piece of work. The biggest truth that comes from Arah’s story is how she was able to work through the troubled relationship she had with her mother and use that to understand her mother as a woman. Arah is a lifelong writer who first began her exploration of the art of storytelling in the third grade. Imposter syndrome survivor and former self defeatist, she spends her time penning literary pieces on popular culture, social justice issues and human behavior. She lives in Houston, Texas with her loving family. Her work has been featured in Madam Noire and Medium. Of Mothers and Daughters deals with trauma, sexual assault, abuse, anxiety, mental health, motherhood and so much more. Take a listen to one of my most favorite interviews.

I volunteered with Big Brother Big Sister for 13 years and in addition to being gifted a phenomenal little sister, I was also honored with getting to know her mother, Essence. I've always admired her with how she could have the ability to raise four children as a single mother. And even now having one daughter at Kenyon College and another at Wake Forrest, both on full ride scholarships, Essence knows how to be a present, fun mother that drives the importance of education. Being selfless and sacrificing several wants and needs helped her to get her children to the places where they are today. But she didn't forget about herself and her wants and desires in the end. I'm privileged to sit down and have an interview, Essence, and talk through her journey of motherhood and how she was able to push through.

We cover a range of topics from the insanity that happened at the capital last week, our review of Pixar's Soul and black Twitter's disdain with the film, Mahjong Women culture appropriating a centuries old Chinese game, the new Clubhouse App, Miyah Pensetto (eye roll), Hilaria Baldwin's identity, and my all time favorite topic, who's the best singer/rapper, Drake or Lauryn Hill. Tune in for a laugh or two. And also, let me know who you think would win in a Drake versus Lauryn Hill.
In today's episode, I have the pleasure of sitting down with the ambitious, purpose driven, Carla Saunders. Carla shares the story of how most of her life she's worked hard to obtain the wonderful things that she's accumulated. But the other side of ambition is that sometimes we can put unnecessary pressure on ourselves and we can feel the need to do it all by ourselves. Carla shares how her anxiety pushed her to the point of needing to get into therapy in order for her to be the mother she wanted to be and the woman she wanted to be. My friend Candace and I have a candid conversation about everything pop culture. In this week's episode I sit down with an old middle school friend, Audrey, and we talk about her many experiences during her journey of motherhood. She shares what it's like to balance being a mother of two in New York City, while also balancing a successful career as a journalist for The Working Mother Magazine. Audrey also details the birth trauma experience she had with giving birth to her son and then immediately going into surgery for hysterectomy. Audrey is also in an interracial marriage and is raising a black son in America. She shares what that experience is like for her. And being that having two kids was always apart of the plan, she lastly discusses her steps towards finding a surrogate and how they were able to welcome their daughter in 2019. It's been a minute since I sat down and asked my listeners how they were doing. So, how are you doing? The world is still in the same place as it was at the beginning of season 2 and I wanted to see how everyone was coping. In addition to that, an article came out on Lauryn Hill and her daughter Selah who voiced how her mother "whooped" her as a child and how that traumatized her. This is something we discuss today and I also share some tools to help moms out there that may be having a hard time pushing through right now.

We often don’t see our parents as humans navigating life the best they can until we become adults ourselves. Becoming parents and mothers can often allow ourselves to give grace and understanding to the ones that raised us. I have a candid conversation about that with one of my besties, Jay, as she shares with us what life looked like living in Jamaica as a child, being apart from her mother during her younger years and coming full circle with her mother as she became a mother herself. We also discuss the trials and challenges she faced as a first time mom. As well as despite being told that having the medical condition of PCOS wouldn't allow her to conceive naturally, she defied those odds with being blessed with two little ones.

What is matrescence? Those physical, psychological and emotional changes a mother goes through after the birth of her little one. I've always wondered how does a mother of multiples do it! Being pregnant with twins always seemed like something magical to me, but pushing through the after birth experience with multiples is definitely miraculous. I sit down with one of my faves, Chi, and we talk about her journey into motherhood. She was just a woman living her best life in London, enjoying a whirlwind romance, when she was hit with the shocking, but pleasant surprise of being pregnant with twin boys. I welcome our wonderful guest, Dr. Tonya Wright, MD, FACOG. She is a graduate of Penn State College of Medicine, a practicing OB-GYN, and mother of two beautiful boys. I'm super excited to have the conversation about balance with Dr. Wright and I ask her questions on how does she find balance with such a demanding career. Women often times feel as if they can't have it all. Having a successful career, a thriving marriage, and kids can seem far fetched. BUT it's possible and a woman shouldn't feel as if they have to pick and choose which one they want out of the three. Sometimes balance looks like imbalance when navigating life. Dr. Wright is fashionable, she's passionate, she loves her kids and she loves her patients. Have a listen to a great conversation.

In this week's episode I talk about ways you can learn how to reset when everything in the world seems to be going array. It's often all about perspective. 2020 definitely didn't turn out to be what ANYONE expected it to be. I heard once that being an adult is like looking both ways before crossing the street and then getting hit by an airplane. That's what this year feels like. Now that we are aware of what we're dealing with in these times and we know that nothing seems to be getting any better in the next couple of months, the best that we can do is cope while we're in this current space. Let's reset. Let's change our perspective. Let's take breaks and breathe. And tell me how you're reseting in order to cope. Let's discuss.

This week’s episode I talk about my 4th trimester experience. What is the fourth trimester? The fourth trimester is the 12-week period immediately after you have had your baby. Mine was filled with a change in plans of supports and redefining what support looks like. Giving birth during a pandemic. Having two babies and continuously watching people look like me be murdered. Then witnessing the black lives movement resurgence and protests worldwide. I also share my birth story and how I received a foley bulb induction, which was the most painful PAINFUL experience I’ve ever had in my ENTIRE LIFE! So, I cover a lot of topics, but have a listen and let’s discuss below 👇🏽

Trauma is an experience that several of us experience, but we never know how it will impact us in our adulthood. For mothers that carry that trauma with us and continue to repress it, it can show it's ugly head without us having any control over it. I had the pleasure of interviewing my mother, Earnie, and I listened to her share her story of abandonment from her own mother, physical abuse from her grandmother and first husband as well as becoming a first time mother at a young age. From this story I find that it's important for us all to take inventory of what we feel like we're carrying with us that shows itself in the way we parent. And to remember that counseling is always an option to help us heal.
