At the end of March ‘19 we were honored to close out our first annual Alignment Festival with SWI. This hour long discussion takes a look at The House of Malico, the founders and the staff. Sasha Kelley, Queens D. Light, Shah Noor, and Emily McLean discuss their childhoods, how they came to HOM, and how HOM was conceived.

Emily Acosta is a visual artist studying to become an art therapist. Born and raised in the Bronx she now lives in Brooklyn. Passionate about art and healing for her the two are interchangeable. The depth in which she approaches the mediums she uses illustrates the rich relationship she has with her art.

Feven Ezra is an activist and community organizer based in Oakland. Her focus is in Civil Law and she works with the Black Organizing Project. An organization focused on policy change within the Oakland community.

Odilcia Balondola is a passionate activist and blogger who’s work and goals are deeply rooted in caring for her community. With a background in birth work, she plans to bring the wisdom and traditions from her Congolese Heritage to her community in Oakland.

Divya Farias (@postmistressgeneral)is a musician who has a background in Jazz and improvisation. She plays the saxophone, and for her activism is an intrinsic part of her creative practice. Her sensitivity to the human experience is utilized not only as a means of creative inspiration but is also a form of self-care.

Alexa Burrell (@lexagon) is a sound and visual artist living in Oakland. Her philosophy on art and music is centered around ritual and time. The depth in which she engages with her artistic expression is inspiring. She expands her creations to include philosophy, activism, and healing.

CC Swan (@dvntphnk) is an artist that uses a tapestry of mediums to convey her insights, and observations. A unique thinker her internal world is rich and engaging. She is on a mission to engage with other artist within the community to create impactful and meaningful work.

Danielle Keenan is an artist who practices in various mediums, currently studying Chinese medicine. She is fearless in her pursuit of creative inspiration. Having worked in costumes, illustration and set design her transition to medicine is a continuation of her creative practices.
