Jason Harris leads our baptism Sunday and shares how we can relate to Christ's death and resurrection through baptism.
The resurrection of Christ is the ultimate foundation of the Christian faith. As stated by the apostle Paul, if Christ has not been raised from the dead then our entire faith is worthless. In this week's sermon, Jeff Wald explains why Christ had to live, had to die, and had to be resurrected from the dead, and provides some evidence for the resurrection that believers can rely on.
What is the ultimate hope for believers? We hope for many things throughout our lives; revival, witnessing God moving in power, having a family, etc. Still, for believers, our ultimate hope is that of resurrection from the dead.
JR Quigley concludes our Easter People series by sharing how we can relate with Christ or, more accurately, how God became man to relate with us.
Peter was both bold (in walking on water) and cowardly (in denying Christ)—yet Christ reinstated him, and greatly used him. No matter what you’ve done, it is never too late to be restored and greatly used by God!

MHCC Elder Tyler Redden shares some practical tips for navigating conflict within marriage. It’s not a sin to feel anger—unless we express it sinfully. The Bible tells us to “Be angry, yet without sinning” and to be “slow to speak, quick to listen.” Unhealthy couples fight dirty, to gain victory; but healthy couples fight fair, to gain resolution.
God’s guidelines for dating and marriage may not sound “normal” today—but today’s “normal” isn’t working! Here are some signs to help you discern whether you may be dating someone who is wrong for you, or right for you.
JR Quigley kicks off our series on marriage and relationships by discussing God's design for marriage. Marriage is one of the most significant ways that God prompts growth in us, and while it can be challenging, it is also a tremendous blessing.
We've discussed the importance of developing as individuals, but how does MHCC develop corporately? JR Quigley spends this Sunday discussing what the Bible has to say about development in the local and global church contexts.
MHCC’s values are Authenticity; generosity; commitment; development; and family. We are doing the work of making disciples. Proverbs 29:18, with expanded meanings of the words, says that “Where there is no prophetic vision (revelation of God and his word) the people cast off restraint (are discouraged, neglected, lacking [guidance], uncovered), but blessed (happy) is he who keeps the law (direction, instruction, wisdom, ways).” God told Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28), and said he would make of Abraham a “great nation” (Genesis 12:2). It is God’s plan for us to multiply, not only physically but spiritually. In God, there is ALWAYS more. But in order to grow, we must believe this. We are called to love and serve one another in freedom.
What are we doing? We’re made not to just get saved and wait for Jesus, but to bear fruit – to pursue vision and growth, and to make many disciples. Development of vision is one of MHCC’s core values. Do we have vision? Do we listen and respond when God gives it? Or do we …
Let God challenge your assumptions! The Magi did: God did something new, and they searched the scriptures and followed his leading. Like them, we should stay open to new ideas from God, trust him to guide us into the future, cultivate an exceptional faith, and find guidance in God’s word.
JR Quigley recaps his trip to South Africa and shares about some of the missions teams that MHCC supports.
Sometimes we go through seasons where we don't feel like engaging with God. Thankful, God's faithfullness doesn't depend upon our mood!
Perpetual worship can reveal God’s will for you, as it did for Isaiah, because as we worship, God changes and leads us. Worship isn't simply singing songs to God, it's a lifestyle of submission and obedience.
What does it mean to be an influencer? Despite our pop culture definition, Scripture teaches that we are all meant to influence others toward Christ.
JR Quigley continues in our series on eschatology by discussing what Scripture teaches about the antichrist.
JR Quigley continues in our series on the eschatology found in Revelation and the letters to the Thessalonians.
Scripture teaches that the end is coming. This week JR begins to dive into different schools of thought on Jesus' return by addressing premillennialism, millennialism, and postmillennialism.
The end is coming! What matters most? Acting like Jesus, not being right on disputable details. We can’t know exactly when or how the end will come (Mark 13:32-33), but we do know Christ will return suddenly, visibly, and bodily (Acts 1:10-11, Luke 17:24, 1 Thessalonians 4:16). We are “on mission” to this broken world, and it matters how we act. God says to avoid quarrels (Romans 10:1) and “establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:7-8).
Pastor and counselor Mark Spencer hosts a workshop on the interactions between rest, relationships with each other, and our relationships with God.
We must learn to compromise—not on God’s standard of right and wrong, which never changes, but on yielding to others in love. God is perfect, and would’ve been perfectly justified in wiping us out for our sin; yet instead he “compromised” by taking all of it upon himself in love. And since God loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:9-11).
Scripture calls us to remain in relationship with other believers - but what do we do when conflicts arise?
There are infinite reasons to worship God. In this week's message, Jeff Wald teaches on four of those reasons and invites us to take seriously the power of the words we sing.
Evil will increase until Jesus returns. Yet we are to rejoice and never worry—because God is good and just, and in the end he will make all things right.
Jesus explains the problem of evil using the Parable of the Weeds in Matthew 13:24-30. Jesus explains that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seeds, but whose crop was corrupted by an enemy planting weeds among the wheat. The weeds will always be with us here on earth, and will never be eradicated until the “fullness of the Gentiles has come in” (Romans 11:25)—that’s us! At that time, the “weeds” will be burned and all of the good seeds, Jews and Gentiles together, will be harvested. Evil is growing—but so is God’s kingdom! When Christ left earth, it held about 250 million inhabitants and only a tiny percentage were Christians yet, while now it holds nearly 8 billion, and about 2.3 billion practice some form of Christianity! God is building a kingdom containing billions of believers, and one day he will burn the weeds and harvest the grain. But until then, we live in a weedy garden!
In our Christian walk, we may occasionally find ourselves taking steps away from Jesus just as Peter did when he denied Christ (Luke 22:54-62). Despite this, Christ welcomes each step we take back towards Him, not condemning us for our lack of faithfulness.
In the U.S., studying the Bible is declining more and more. Study it! God’s living word changes us! It is sharp and// powerful; it divides soul from spirit, and it judges our hearts (Hebrews 4:12).
The story of Jesus and the withering fig tree emphasizes the value of bearing spiritual fruit. With that in mind, how do we believers bear more fruit? Through connectedness with God in faith.
Whether we realize it or not, we are all called to be fishers of men. Scripture instructs us to make disciples of all nations - but how do we go about doing that? By growing the net!
Kids want “sweet,” but adults learn to appreciate “bittersweet” – a life of hopes and dreams, mixed with the death of those hopes and dreams. Satan steals our hope (Genesis 3:1-15), but God gives it back (Luke 8:49-56). Like a dying seed in the soil, hope fades slowly, as it did for Jairus and his daughter while they both faced her death. And like that dying seed, she did die. But after hope was dead, Jesus took her hand and gave her new life, saying, “Get up!” And he says the same to you.
As a Christian, does your life look different from those who have no faith? Do you exhibit mercy to those around you? What is the example you're giving to the world around you?
As a loving father, God not only invites us to take our requests to him but also promises that he will provide what we need. In light of this, we should reflect on what we're asking God for - if we're even asking for anything, to begin with.
Dr. Clem Ferris shares lessons from Scripture on getting through seasons of transition.
As a kickoff to our Recharge season, Jeff Wald and other leaders at MHCC take time to share about the various ministry teams and leaders here at Mount Helena Community Church.
Regardless of our life circumstances, we are all called to leadership and influence. Scripture outlines many principles of leadership which we can learn from in order to better serve those around us.
The first church (Acts 2) grew quickly and was marked by teaching, fellowship, eating together, praying, sharing wealth, praising God, and enjoying favor with all the people. (Yes, our public reputation matters!) Let's follow their model and do all we can to focus on those very same things.
The Holy Spirit is still at work in each of our lives today. While hearing from God and the gift of prophecy can be received with a degree of skepticism, Scripture gives abundant examples of how we can hear from God in our everyday lives.
Through the story of Daniel, we can learn how to stand firm with unwavering strength despite the constant changes and turmoil of the world. We must resolve to stay strong, work in a community of believers, listen to the guidance of God, pray, praise, walk out what God instructs us to do, and look at life through the lens of Scripture. Only then can we remain strong in a hostile world.
Hearing from God is not always with a loud, booming voice as we often picture it, and not every word from God is akin to the prophecies of the Old Testament. Instead, God regularly speaks in small, simple ways as we go about our days. Because of this, we should learn to hear God's voice and be attentive to what he may have to say to us.
God is actively speaking to us through his Spirit as we go about our day. Scripture teaches that we should be listening for God's voice to guide us and direct us.
Genesis 6 shows we are engulfed in sin. 1 Peter 3 shows Christ died a cruel death to save us from it. What more do you need to convince you of the immense depth of your own need for grace?
The Holy Spirit and his gifts empower the church—under Christ and his chosen shepherds—in unity, decency, and order. Keys to power and unity include forgiving one another and following God's appointed order: Christ the Head, then God-ordained shepherds, then other believers serving Christ, the church, and the world.
1 Peter 4:10-11 teaches that: We all have gifts; they are intended to serve others; we must steward them well; and they are for God's glory. Also, we see in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 that love is above them all, and in Philippians 2:2–8 that we are to have the mind of Christ (perfect humility) in all we do. Gifts are given "for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7) and are meant to build up the church in unity, maturity, and love. If you don't know your gift(s) – ask God and the people around you, and then use them for his glory!
We have all been empowered by the Holy Spirit with specific gifts and abilities. We should all aim to identify these giftings and use these talents and abilities to better serve the body of Christ!
After Jesus left earth, the Holy Spirit came to enable believers to resist sin and fulfill God’s mission. He existed from the beginning and throughout the Old Testament (Genesis 1:2; Numbers 11:9; Job 34:14-15; Psalm 104:30; Isaiah 32:14-18, 44:3; Joel 2:28-29)—but since Acts, he has been present with us in a new way, as promised by both John the Baptist and Christ (Matthew 3:11; John 16:7; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8). He purifies, unifies, illuminates / instructs, and empowers (2 Thessalonians 2:18; 1 Corinthians 12:13; John 14:26; Acts 2).
Who is the authority that decides who I am? Expressive individualism says it’s ME; but God says it’s HIM. Paul says: Don’t be trapped by the philosophies of this world that are not according to Christ (Colossians 2:8); instead, let Christ give you his own new identity (Colossians 3:1-17), bought by the authority of his sacrifice on the cross.
Just as a redwood tree's roots are wide just as they are deep, so a Christian's roots should not only have depth in their relationship with God, but also width in their relationship with others. We are all stronger when we are part of a healthy, life-giving community. Ephesians 3:14-19 tells us to be rooted and grounded in love…together with God’s people. Loving God’s people is key.
Samson was crazy strong in body, but not morally. True strength comes from seeking God (Isaiah 40:31). On our own we can’t be strong, but in the Lord we can!. Compare Samson’s ever-increasing moral compromises, humiliation, and death (Judges 13-16) to Christ’s example of Ephesian 6:10 (the secret of true spiritual strength): “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.”
We’re in a spiritual battle! The Bible tells how to win it, and shows how Jesus won against Satan’s temptations.
What is love? It’s a commitment to serve. Jesus washed his disciples’ filthy feet, and commanded them do the same for one another (John 13:1-9, 34-45). He surprised everyone by never doing what they expected. He was a master at loving and serving people, and making them feel valued. With his help, we must follow his example. Nothing in the universe matters more.
We are an army of sheep! In community—not alone—we fight Satan’s lies and our own sins to realign with God’s gracious plan, which eventually will bring all of creation out of Satan’s darkness (and our own rebellion) back into Christ’s kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13-14, 1 John 5:18-20).
Through the church, God shows his wisdom (Ephesians 3:7-13). You have a gift to be used for this purpose. Use it! Take it seriously! God has prepared good works for you to do (Ephesians 2:10). Do them!
Words hold the power of life and death (Genesis 1, Proverbs 18:21). We must learn to control our words—and our deeds. We are to seek “the wisdom of Solomon” and exhibit self-control and fairness—not sinful behaviors like rage, contentiousness, and overindulgence in food and drink.
Wisdom is better than gold (Proverbs 3:13-18); it includes good character (integrity)—and good words that bring help, not hurt. The critical importance of words is confirmed by Solomon (Proverbs 10:19-21), Jesus (Matthew 12:36-37), James (James 4:6), and Paul—who adds that even our very salvation is confirmed by our words (Romans 10:9).
Solomon was blessed for seeking wisdom above all else. God’s simple wisdom beseeches us: Work hard, trust God, do good! Proverbs 1:7 and 3:5-6 teach us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and that we must trust in God, not in ourselves. It also warns repeatedly that if we fail to heed wisdom’s simple message, we will inevitably reap the fruits of our folly. So if we are wise, we won’t ignore God’s wisdom; instead, we will heed it and follow it.
JR Quigley shares on Christ's coming and inevitable second coming based on the writings of John in the books of John and Revelation.
Through Scripture we must become mature and skilled in “the word of righteousness” (Heb. 5:13)—able to convert unbelievers, as Paul converted his Philippian jailer. Paul was so mature that even after being beaten and imprisoned, his testimony of praise to God actually redeemed the jailer’s life, both physically and spiritually. Like Paul, we must move from milk to solid food. God calls us to radical spiritual change – a powerful testimony to the world.
The world rebels more and more, yet God is achieving his mission of uniting all things under Christ. Our part is to reach the whole earth with his message by doing the good works he has prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). Scripture repeatedly describes God’s sovereign plan to restore and reconcile all of creation back to himself (Ephesians 1:9-10)—and he WILL achieve it. So when the world rebels, he’s not worried or scared; instead, he laughs (Psalm 2:1-6) because he knows that in the end, his own good plan will prevail. And we are to help him carry it out. We must not be distracted by COVID, or politics, or the loss of freedoms that is surely coming. Instead, we must join him in the high calling of carrying his love and service to the ends of the earth.
Like us, the Jews wanted favor — not hard truths. But when Jesus preached both, he changed everything. So they tried to kill him. They thought God’s blessing was for them, and God’s vengeance was for others; but he told them he came to save the whole world. We must not repeat their error. The way to find blessing is to bless others, not ourselves. That is Christ’s mission—and ours. Instead of praying, ”Lord, bless me!” —let us pray, “Lord, bless THROUGH me!”
Jeff Wald shares what it means to abide in Christ and stirs us to action in response to Jesus' transforming power in our lives.
Christ’s final commission to us was to grow up into maturity, and to make mature disciples! How do we get there? By becoming doers of the word, and not hearers only. But how do we become doers? Not by works or legalism, but by communing deeply and regularly with God and his word—and then obeying. This mission—i.e., not just evangelizing people, but “disciple-izing” them to maturity—is the most valuable, important, necessary, and urgent mission in the world. What lesser missions distract you from it? What next step is God challenging you to take to love and serve those around you?
God wants us to be alive – and on-mission! You were prepared for mission, and God has prepared mission for you. He is writing you into the story. Ephesians 2:10 says that “We are God’s workmanship, created for good works in Christ” – and the preceding verses tell us HOW this mission of good works is accomplished. It is not something we can ever do on our own, but it happens only by grace, through faith: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV).
God’s critical mission for us is to share the hope of Christ! That’s what people need, and we can’t stay spectators; we must change from consumers to contributors. We want someone else to do it for us – but no one else can. You yourself must prepare your mind (“gird up the loins of your mind” in KJV) your mind, and engage in this spiritual battle with discipline and sober-mindedness (1 Peter 1:13). God is building his church around the world, just as he said he would (Matthew 16:18) – and we are called to play a part. When his truth is revealed to us, we must adjust our lives accordingly. Each of us must become a doer of the word, not just a hearer only (James 1:22).
Cory Swanson encourages us to take advantage of a field ripe for harvest in front of us by ceasing from excuse-making, and instead seeing the opportunities in front of us to impact those around us, so long as we are prepared to take them.
