In 2017 alone, there were 8,828 victims of various hate crimes, reported by police in just the United States. This was nearly a 6% increase from 2016. Around 1:55pm, the police department in Vallejo, California received a call from a man named Aaron Quinn, telling them that his girlfriend had been taken by masked intruders and that he didn’t know where she had gone. He told them he had witnessed the whole kidnapping, but couldn’t report it right away because he’d been blindfolded, drugged, and threatened not to call the police. The following few days would be a roller coaster for Aaron, the investigators, and the community.

It was the summer of 2012. Police received a 911 call from an employee of an apartment complex, who told them that a 9 year old girl was in their office, after having run away from home. When they arrived at the office, the young girl named Emani Moss, told them she ran away from home, and didn’t want to return because her stepmother was mean, and she hated her. After hearing some more details about the rough living situation of this girl, they visited the home she had run away from. But after some questioning, they determined she wasn’t in danger and left her right back where she started. This decision would have terrible consequences for the young girl.

Mary Vincent had been trying to hitch a ride from Berkeley, California, near San Francisco, down to Corona, California, near Los Angeles. She accepted a ride from 51 year old Larry Singleton. She called him out for missing the exit, and driving the wrong way. Soon after he apologized for his mistake, he pulled off the interstate to relieve himself. He pulled onto a secluded road, and got out to pee. Mary got out to stretch, and as she bent over to tie her shoes, something happened to her that would change her life forever.

September 29th, 1978, was a suffocatingly hot day in Berkeley. California, where Mary Vincent, a 15 year old dancer stood trying to hitch a ride to her grandfather’s house in Corona, California. Mary was getting tired of standing in the heat, and just wanted to find a ride. Then a van pulled up, driven by an older man in overalls. He looked like a friendly, trustworthy father type. So Mary, who was exhausted from standing in the heat, accepted the ride, even after 2 other hitchhikers with her told her they had a funny feeling about this guy, and she probably shouldn’t go with him. But she was an experienced hitch hiker, and felt confident in herself. This ride wouldn’t go quite the way she had hoped.

Abuse is something that is very difficult to understand, especially if you haven’t experienced it. The effects vary from person to person, and everyone has a unique reaction. The emotions and confusion it can cause can be overwhelming, and even crippling. It’s definitely not an easy thing to move past. For many people, whether they intend to or not, they might attach a level of shame to victims and survivors of abuse. Some people even say things they would have done differently, as if they would never allow themselves to be abused. This kind of ignorance and shaming can make it really difficult for real survivors to heal and move on. The story we’re sharing today taught us that abuse doesn’t need to define you. It’s a great example of someone who was able to make the best of life, even though she didn’t receive the justice she deserved.

Amina and Sarah Said were the daughters of Tissie and Yaser Said. Their father, Yaser, was an Egyptian - American man who wanted his daughters to marry Muslim men. But, they had both fallen in love with non muslim boys, and they didn’t tell their father because they feared his reaction. This led to a lot of tension in the Said household. But it didn’t just stop there. Yaser would stalk the girls to try to learn their secrets. He would secretly record them with his video camera. This made them very uncomfortable, and for good reason. He had also abused them in the past, and threatened them into keeping quiet. They were desperate to start a new life, and their boyfriend’s had just recently proposed, but Yaser wasn’t going to let them go easily.

Jerry Michael Williams was a hard working husband and new father. He had married his high school sweetheart and they lived together in Tallahassee, Florida. But on December 16th, 2000, his family received the unsettling news that he was missing. Later on, they found his truck and his boat, but no sign of Mike. In March 24, 2015, a court bailiff made his way to the Martin Luther King townhomes, in the lower east side of Detroit. He was looking for 35 year old Mitchelle Blair to serve an eviction notice. Mitchelle owed $2,206 in rent. He knocked at the door, but no one answered. So he identified himself and found a way to get in. The house was filthy but Mitchelle was nowhere to be found. Figuring she had already fled, the bailiff began moving things out of the home. Then he noticed something a bit strange. There was a freezer in the living room. It was heavy, so they opened the door to clear stuff out of it. But as they opened the door, they were shocked by a horrific sight.

It was a typical Saturday night in 2005 for Lachele Nance in Lake Worth, Florida. She was staying overnight at her godmother, Lisa Taylor’s house. Lachele shared a bed with Lisa’s 1 year old grandson and everything seemed to be just fine. But around 1am, Lisa’s daughter Danielle came to her and told her that Lachelle was gone. Frantically, she got up and they all searched the house. They found Lachele’s shoes sitting neatly by the front door, but the girl was nowhere to be found.
