Mercy is God's delight. He doesn't punish us for our sins (as we deserve) because He punished His own Son for our sins on the cross (which He did not deserve). In turn, we should show mercy to others through gratitude, humility, and patience.
The end of all things is near. So, be self-controlled, sober-minded, love one another, show hospitality, and serve one another to glorify God.
"Then the LORD showed me four craftsmen ... And these have come to cast down the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it"
Thus says the LORD of hosts, "My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem."
God's Word is His deed: He is active, fulfilling His own promises. God's Word is reality: it exposes the world for what it really is. God's promises still stand: He requires a response from every generation. He is kindly disposed toward me, supremely through Christ. "Return to me, and I will return to you."
Wives, let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.
In our culture, we are taught to work to earn everything. The concept of free grace is a challenge to our thinking. We must realize how much our God loves grace.
God commands us to endure graciously even in the midst of harsh mistreatment. Follow Christ's example in suffering - He entrusted Himself to His Father and endured the cross.
You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Jesus promises answers to prayer. This good promise remains true to all who ask, seek, and knock - even to the reluctant, the disappointed, and the skeptical.
Naomi experienced loss of material things, loved ones, and even her own identity. But God always provided a ray of hope.
To "keep ourselves in the love of God," we must look to ourselves (using God's ordinary means of grace and having an attitude of hope), look to others (showing mercy to some and snatching some), and look to God (relying on Him as the only one who is able to keep us).
An overview of the book of Ruth. Naomi experiences complete emptiness (ch 1), God's smiling providence and promise (ch's 2 and 3), and finally complete fullness (ch 4).
Paul rebukes a spirituality of "easy rigor" and speaks of a more holistic call to discernment, thankfulness, and training for godliness. The beauty of God motivates us and the Spirit of God enables us to immerse ourselves in the Word and faithfully live out this call.
Recognizing our New Life, New Future, and New Mind, we can live our lives with God as our primary audience, and be free from the entanglements and patterns of the world and of our own past.
The last six commandments teach us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our love for neighbor is a manifestation of our love for God.
Jesus uses the metaphor of a vine to describe our relationship with Him. We are to abide in Him and depend on Him in order to receive our sustenance and experience fullness of joy, as He does with His Father. To abide in Him is to abide in His Word.
God provided an abundance of sacrifices to cover an abundance of sins committed by an abundance of people, who will experience an abundance of forgiveness. In the OT, they brought a sacrifice; in Christ, we bring nothing. We simply cling to Him as our sacrifice.
Keeping God's law is perfectly obeying all of God's instructions. Since God knows we don't do that, He gave us His Son who lived a perfect life on our behalf and took the punishment for our sins on the cross. God's "law principle" and "grace principle" work together in our justification and sanctification.
The God who saved us and called us, also guards us and empowers us. Paul sees God's grace working in his life in both dramatic ways and mundane ways, but both are equally amazing.
Mary experienced the deepest disappointment at Jesus' death, and the ultimate joy at his resurrection, where He spoke her name and she knew His voice.
Consider how fickle is the human heart. Consider how free is the grace of God. Peter and Judas both turned their back on Jesus, but only Peter took his sin to Jesus for cleansing.
God's justice and mercy meet in the Person of Christ. At the Lord's Table, Jesus is both the Host and the Feast.
Esteem parents because of their position. But also esteem everyone because all are image-bearers of God. The command brings a promise of long life and prosperity to those who obey.
Jesus is the only worthy object of our faith. Jesus makes clean what is unclean. Jesus redefines what is true virtue (humble reliance on Him)
Observe the Lord's Day by setting it apart as special to the Lord, remembering our former condition (slaves to sin) and what the Lord has done (set us free), and recognizing that our entrance into eternal rest is guaranteed because of Jesus.
Confessing God's name without living a corresponding lifestyle is taking His name in vain. We do this every time we sin. Jesus is our hope - He lived a perfect life (never took the Name in vain) and died on the cross for us (paid for every time we did)
God declares His identity as our gracious, covenant God, prohibits worship and service to other gods, and motivates our obedience with His loving jealousy.
Because He is God, Jesus is both the Lion and the Lamb - the omnipotent Conqueror and the loving, gracious Savior. Let this compel our worship and calm our fears.
Between the first coming of Christ and the second, God calls us and enables us to live a life of godliness and self-control.
Hold fast with resolve and approach God for help with confidence because we have a High Priest who is willing and able to help us.
In the new year, "Keep On" in three ways: cultivate your heart, be encouraged in hope, and get the help you need.
Jesus grows through the temple, gives instruction about the temple, and claims ownership of the temple.
Mary's song is the gospel. This good news of Jesus' birth is to be believed, it brings a smile for the humble, terror to the proud, and calls all of us to "get low."
We can navigate present adversity by remembering the past, asking God to restore our fortunes, and remembering that He is the Great "Reverser."
Fear not little flock for the Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Be empowered by the grace of God that has given you the kingdom.
Praying for the peace (shalom, shawa and tov) of Jerusalem includes praying for the peace of the church, self, neighbor and all around the world because the house of God is there !
Consider Jesus: the dignity Christ shares with us and the difficulty Christ took on Himself.
We must persevere to trust in God because He is good. He is present in our suffering; delivers us out of our suffering, brings justice to those who cause our suffering.
David's grace to Mephibosheth is similar to God's grace towards sinners. We are to give God's grace and kindness to others, especially the underserving.
No tempation has siezed you except what is common to man. And God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.
If you like the status quo, if you think you can handle things by yourself, if you doubt God's goodness for you, then don't pray.
The big goal of Christian living is to hear the words, WELL DONE THOU GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.
As a father, we relate to God as children. As a King, we relate to him as servants. Because He is our Father, we can trust Him as our King.
In the condescension of God, the Creator and the Creature became One: The Great Mystery. In Jesus Christ, God's steadfast love and faithfulness are exhibited as "full of grace and truth."

Moses working as advocate and intercessor. The people couldn't see Moses and placed their faith in the golden calf. Jesus is gone. What is HE doing in heaven?
Our purpose is Worship, setting our affections on Someon greater than ourselves. Our Possession is the Promised Spirit, the vision already accomplished.
We were chosen before time was created; predestined to become more like our Brother, Jesus Christ; redeemed never to be snatched from His Hand.

The gospel is the good news of King Jesus announcing the beginning of the renovation of all things and demands a personal response.
The blood of Christ will purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Jesus comes to put things right, to restore justice and righteousness, and create a place for those who don't have a home.
The Servant comes to be acquainted with pain, sorrow, suffering....coming in the likeness of sinful flesh. Jesus experienced all the sadness of this world to restore us.
It was not the Jews, not us, but the Father who killed the Son. Isa 53:10 It pleased the Father to crush him. Acts 2:23 delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.

Change comes as Jesus gets bigger. We are utterly dependent on the ministry of Jesus. Because we have an implacable enemy we are incapable of being appeased. Satan desires to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you.
It's about God, it's about you. And ultimately it's about God. Glory to God in the highest and on earth Shalom, salvation for you by the grace of God.
The Excellence of Jesus. Jesus greater than the Angels. Admonition #1 Pay Close Attention. Jesus greater than Moses and Joshua. Admonition #2 Consider Jesus. Take care. Let us Fear.
The Lord is more merciful than we understand or appreciate. Peter, will you listen as Jesus tells you the truth about yourself? Will we listen as Jesus tells us the TRUTH about ourselves? Jesus will never get bigger than when we despair of ourselves and see Jesus who can reconcile us to God.
Peter's vision is increasingly filled with the glory of Jesus. Three observations: what Peter got right; what Peter missed: what Peter, you and I must continue to learn. It's a good thing to be in the Presence of God. Missed were the cross of Jesus and cross of self-denial--love and service to others. We must Listen to the Son.

How do we get to be like Peter who at the end wants to have his life look more like the glory of Jesus? 1. Something About Peter 2. Something About the Father 3. Something About the Church Jesus is the agent of change. By God's grace, Jesus grows larger and larger in our vision.

Conflict will come for the Christian. Evil is real. Evil will be crushed. God will provide. The Lord's hand will lead you safely home.
These wisemen were seekers-but they also were being called/drawn when other wisemen did not go. God called them out of there pagan darkness.
Simeon's character serves as a portal, a doorway that allows us to reflect on his wisdom, what he saw and understood.

Mary and Zechariah drag future realities to define present realities and when that happens, Joy erupts.
We anticipate the time of Christmas, the beginning of Fulfillment. God ordered the suffering of Zechariah and Elizabeth for the good of the nation; their loss for the gain of thousands and Millions. Peter embraces the Person, believes in the Promise, and possesses an altered Perspective.

Change is growth. Peter's faith is growing, being transformed. 1. What is Peter Learning? 2. How is Peter learning? 3. To what end is Peter learning?
The Present Kingdom The Proclaimed Kingdom God builds His people thru faith in the Promises.
Environment of Faith Object of Faith Persistence of Faith Growth of Faith Looking at Peter we see the development of faith.
Let Jesus come and dwell in our hearts by faith, that He may transform and cleanse them.
By testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Because we are weak and easily discouraged in our Christian life, we must run with endurance by embracing God's provision for perseverance.
Do not be conformed to this age but be conformed to the age to come...be conformed to Christ.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformedby the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God.
There is one gospel for both Jew and Gentile.The gospel is applied to both groups. There is unity in the Bible.
This kingnis different from any other king you've encountered. He employs all his power for the benefit of His people.
Disappointment in ourselves leads to disappointment in God. But God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew.
What doesn't make sense to us right now will in the end. Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
These commandments that I give you are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
There is a continuity of practice in the sciptures. The promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit is for you and your children.
Easter is about the death of Jesus on the previous Friday. He crushes death with His death with His death on the cross. The body of Jesue did not undergo decay, but was transformed and real to those who saw Him and touched Him.
We can become detectives and go exploring in the Bible. Let the little details lead you to glorius surprises. Details give us significant truths.
In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he reminds them that there is only one TRUTH - JESUS... not diversity. Also, as then, we are engaged in a great battle with the enemy with Christ as the victor.
Christ has come to redeem sinners. What you cannot do, God has freely done. Faith is entrusting yourself to Christ. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God rasised him from the dead, you will be saved.
What is faith? It is trust. Faith is necessary because we fail to keep the law perfectly. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes in Him.
Paul reminds the recipients of his letter that God is the potter and we are the clay. We have been chosen by God, just as the potter determines the uses of the vessels He creates.
God is rebuilding His Kingdom.The Gospel means good news and is a joyful announcement. The goal of the Gospel is to repent.
The commandments of the Lord are true.They are a clear and true word. God loves His people. Jesus is alive, not dead, and seated at the right hand of God.
When God is invited to come, He comes. When God shows up you never know what will happen.Worship is the intersection of seen and unseen.
Who am I, what am I, what do I need from God? The grace, work and word ofGod.The magnitude of God completely excededs our grasp.
Jesus demonstrated His power over death. As He descends, those in Christ will rise. Bodies will be restored.
This passage in Luke describes the first prophetic announcement since the days of Malachi, a period of over 400 years. The angel appears to Zechariah and tells him of the birth of a son, to him and his wife, Elizabeth. Through this passage, we hear of the coming of the promised and long-awaited Messiah. John is the one who will bring that announcement and in this passage we can see three things of wonderful significance: 1. an irruption of grace (that is, an 'inbreaking' of grace; 2. a culture of grace; 3. pictures of grace. It is grace that distinguishes Christianity from all other religous and phiosophical systems and it is grace that we encounter, no matter where we go in the Bible
What is the significance of the Kingdom of God? What images come to mind as you think of the Kingdom? Having just come through the Advent season, this message asks the question 'Why did Jesus come?' Luke 14 gives us the answer and teaches us three things:
The last book of the bible, the Revelation, was given to the church in the midst of suffering and persecution. John identifies himself as 'your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus' (Rev. 1-9). This verse is key to understanding the message of the entire book. Jesus, the Revealer, and John the writer of this book, have the same concern: to give hope toa suffering church as it awaits the return of Jesus the King. revelation 12 shows the church three things:
When Jesus came in weakness and humility, he came, none-the-less, as the long-awaited King and is promised the throne of David. Jesus is now our reigning King who will return a second time to complete what He has begun. In this passage we gain a glimpse of what life will be like when Jesus returns.
