On Saturday, the Free Think Zone brought the heat. U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar sat down with Brother Jeff for a bold, unfiltered conversation that pulled no punches.
Together, they tackled the critical issues of our time:
✊🏾 Black Lives — here at home and across the globe 🌍 Africa — its power, its exploitation, and its future 🕊️ Gaza — the human cost of silence and complicity 🚫 ICE — and the criminalization of migration 🗳️ Democracy — under siege from voter suppression to authoritarian creep
This was not a soundbite session — it was a truth-telling, deeply personal, and politically fearless dialogue that you do not want to miss.

In this podcast, brother jeff delivers a passionate critique of Ryan Coogler's 2025 film Sinners, expressing his strong disapproval of what he sees as an overly simplistic and melodramatic use of themes and characters. While he acknowledges that the cinematography and artistic elements are beautifully executed, he felt that the story lacked depth and the characters failed to hold his attention. To him, the film leaned too heavily on visual style without offering meaningful substance or compelling narrative arcs.
Despite its technical strengths, Sinners ultimately fell flat in brother jeff's eyes. After sitting through two hours of what he describes as shallow symbolism and predictable dialogue, he walked out of the theater—unmoved and unconvinced. He calls for filmmakers to aim higher when portraying complex cultural and spiritual issues, warning against reducing them to hollow spectacle.

On May 7th, 2024, DJP hosted an impactful community forum featuring the candidates vying for the Denver District Attorney position. Partnering with influential organizations like The Denver Task Force for Reimagining Policing and Public Safety, the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition, Women Uprising, and brother jeff, we facilitated a dynamic conversation on critical issues. The candidates shared their visions for criminal legal system reform, commitment to collaborating with community leaders, advocating for alternatives to mass incarceration, and ensuring transparency in charging practices to combat racial biases. To delve deeper into their responses, explore the questionnaire they answered. Our dedication to keeping voters informed stems from our belief in the district attorney’s pivotal role in steering away from mass incarceration of marginalized communities.
In the race for Denver District Attorney, Leora Joseph and John Walsh are vying for the position with different visions for addressing the city's challenges. Leora Joseph emphasizes the need for accountability and reform in the criminal justice system. With over two decades of experience, including in human trafficking units and as a leader in Gov. Jared Polis' administration, she advocates for consequences for crimes but also alternative pathways like treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues. Joseph plans to create specialized units for handling serious crimes and community prosecution to strengthen relationships between prosecutors, police, and community organizations.
John Walsh, a former U.S. Attorney, focuses on enhancing community safety and criminal justice reform. He highlights his extensive experience managing large offices and working on significant cases, including advocating for sentencing reform and addressing violent crimes. Walsh proposes creating a Violent Crime Taskforce, aggressively prosecuting drug dealers, and expanding diversion courts for mental health and drug treatment. He also supports training the police on best practices and maintaining independence in prosecuting police misconduct cases. Both candidates shared their visions at a forum hosted by Better Together Denver on June 6, 2024, at Two Moons Music Hall. Ballots are due June 25, 2024.
Donald Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, which are all classified as felonies under New York state law. These charges stem from payments made to suppress negative information during the 2016 presidential campaign, specifically involving hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, among others. The charges allege that Trump falsified business records to conceal these payments and their true purpose, which was to influence the election by preventing damaging stories from coming out.
Denver, CO —
Why: "The Denver Police Department is not a safe workplace for women"
Denver, CO - On the heels of their testimony in support HB24-1460, the Law Enforcement Misconduct bill to protect whistleblowers who report police misconduct, former mayoral candidate Lisa Calderón, former DPD officers Carla Havard and Holland Wriston—and “TC”, the survivor of sexual harassment by a Denver police officer featured in a series of Westword articles, will call for a boycott of DPD's upcoming Women's Community Academy and future trainings. This will be the first time TC has been interviewed publicly.
"Despite the rhetoric they use to recruit women, the Denver Police Department has proven over and over that it is not a safe workplace for women," stated Lisa Calderón, Executive Director of Women Uprising, an organization dedicated to increasing progressive women's political power.
Former Sgt. Carla Havard, who was DPD's highest-ranking Black woman officer, was forced to resign after raising concerns about a hostile work environment. "The Department should not turn a blind eye to the racial and gender inequity occurring at all levels. Women are the future of law enforcement. DPD needs to change from a culture of discrimination and retaliation rooted in gender and racial bias," stated Havard who recently filed a federal lawsuit against the City and County of Denver and the Denver Police Department, alleging First Amendment violations, discrimination, and retaliation.
The women plan to talk about allegations described in an internal report detailing systemic and pervasive sexual harassment and discrimination against women police officers, their disproportionately high resignation rate, as well as the lack of accountability for sexual harassment by DPD officers toward civilians.
"DPD officials for years ignored a pattern of disturbing behavior by an officer who sexually harassed me after I reported a crime," stated TC. "After initially ignoring my complaint— and then mischaracterizing our relationship as consensual, they gave him a two-day suspension. They essentially gave him permission to harass other women, which he did." As reported in Westword, Officer Zachery Phillips recently resigned amid an investigation into inappropriate contact with two women he'd met during an on-duty call.
In addition to warning future female recruits away from applying to DPD's training academy, the women will discuss institutional changes that are needed in DPD, the public safety department, and the city attorney's office to address the systemic discrimination, retaliation, and sexual harassment against women.
