Jennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, author, speaker and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am (2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. Knapp received critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her “a rising star” and People Magazine describing her as “an uncommonly literate songwriter.”

As the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position created opportunities for national dialogue, including appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith, through which she continues to speak and perform nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues.

Today on the pod she speaks about:

  • Her Coming Out Story.
  • Her Alter Ego Big Delores.
  • What was really going on when she stepped away from music for a few years.
  • How heteronormativity has shaped our spirituality for so long.
  • Her next Coming Out Chapter.

Jennifer Knapp has been a very helpful resource to me in my own coming out, and I was delighted to be able to speak with her, and share our conversation with you. My hope is it will help you on your own coming out journeys. May we each find our own authentic voice... and share that with the world.

Nadja is a powerhouse of a coach and someone that I have personally learned so much from in the past year.  I love that in this episode she shares vulnerably about her own internalized homophobia even though she's been married to a woman for years.  She teaches us some tools to work through this and inspires us to live whole lives.

I share my synopsis of Annie Duke's book Quit.

She shares so many helpful ideas of how to know when it's time to quit and how to do it well.  It really stretched my opinion of quitting from a judgement of being a bad thing, to it being a really good thing.

I hope it stretches you to think about times you maybe should have quit sooner in the past, or gives you courage and tools for quitting something that's not working for you right now.

If you'd like to share a quitting story from your past that others can learn from, you can record it here and we may even include it on the show if you'd like: https://anchor.fm/comingout/message

And if you're ready to quit something but it feels too scary, send me a message and I will be your quit coach.  Nancy@Centered.ca

Many people have told me this podcast has helped them feel inspired and like they aren't alone, so I know it's important to come back and keep sharing.

Joe Boivin returns to the show this week to reminisce with Nancy about their shared experience at a Missionary Kid boarding school in Kenya. Back before either of them had fully come out, Joe describes what it was like as he gradually came to terms with his queerness during that time. As they discuss how their relationship with each other developed throughout the following years, both reflect on how time has allowed them to change in so many ways, all of which have ultimately led up to where they are today.

After spending many hours of childhood catching insects and looking them up in the encyclopedia, Joe went to college to study Biology. He now has a PhD in Neuroscience and is completing his postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, where his research focuses on how brain cells form connections with each other during development.

What happens when you embody a marginalized identity while knowing that you can hide it more easily than others? Carly Hutton offers her own perspective in her conversation with Nancy as she speaks from her experience as a biracial, bisexual woman. In her decision to come out to her community, she not only wanted to demonstrate her support with other queer people but to also show others that there are people who look and love like she does within the queer community that have valid experiences, as well.

Carly Hutton is an Indigenous-Mexican woman living on unceded Sehmiahmoo lands, also known as Langley, BC. She is a writer, a musician, a wife, and a mother whose passion is to be an advocate for the marginalized. You can follow her family's journey on @carlymbutton on Instagram.

Richele McEwan speaks up about the domestic abuse she experienced growing up. As a professional dancer she used Dance as a creative and powerful medium to express what happened. Richele felt called to come out about this so that others who have experienced similar violence can be inspired to also transform their pain into beauty. This coming out has been a catalyst for other growth in her personal life and business, not to mention the lives of many people who were impacted by her very public sharing. Richele is now inspiring others to let go of co-dependence and step into their bigger, healthier lives.
By owning her story she has been able to transform her life from a place of overwhelming darkness-- and underwhelming mediocrity-- to being truly extraordinary. She is now on a mission to help others discover the power of honouring their truest selves, so they too can #goalbigger.

Despite being raised as Jehovah’s Witness, Dalia Kinsey already had an awareness of diverging from the traditional framework of sexuality that was presented to her as a child. After growing up and coming out as queer, she recounts her experience of leaving the cult-and thus the community-she had known for so long in order to live her life freely. By doing the work of enforcing boundaries and continually honoring and returning to those feelings from childhood, she now implements the values of transparency and authenticity in her work as a dietician advocating for body neutrality.

Dalia Kinsey is a Registered Dietitian, Inclusive Employee Wellness Specialist, and creator of the Body Liberation for All podcast, a show dedicated to amplifying the health and happiness of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) folx. On her mission to spread joy, reduce suffering, and eliminate health disparities in her QTBIPOC community, she rejects diet culture and teaches people to use nutrition as a self-care and personal empowerment tool.

In our first episode of 2021, Nancy interviews Becca Kunce, who shares a few of the lessons she’s learned throughout her multiple coming out stories and the ways in which they are intertwined with another. Initially coming to terms with her sexuality led to exploring the nature of her gender, which then led to Becca exploring the facets of her body as a whole in ways she had never before. Through this prompting that led to healing old ways of seeing and interacting with her body, Becca has been able to reckon with many of the narratives surrounding loving one's body and oneself that she learned growing up, which has ultimately allowed her to become a coach and create space for others to find that healing, as well.

Today, Al Ramsey joins Nancy to share his personal story of coming out as gay in two separate stories of coming to terms with his identity. On one hand, he was one of the first people to confront the shift in treatment toward the LGBT community in the workforce as he  became an advocate for inclusion at TD bank. Then, with this shift came the need to finally share his full self with his family. Through his courage to come out in both of these situations, Al speaks on how remaining authentic to who he is ultimately allowed him to become a better advocate and make a greater impact in helping other members of the LGBT community.

After having Darla LeDoux as a guest on the podcast, Nancy talks with Kimmi Ward, Darla’s wife, this week! Kimmi gracefully elaborates on the complexities of gender roles that take place in lesbian relationships, especially in regards to the fluidity of partners taking on masculine and feminine energies. She reflects on how these energies were portrayed while growing up, and how they ultimately come to affect her personal relationship to them now. Dr. Erin Baker shares about their coming out as Non-binary and recent transition to using They/Them pronouns publicly. Erin loves living in the And, (The name of her podcast) and how she is now choosing to show up in the world... with using she/her AND they/them pronouns. It can be an unsteadying roller coaster ride to share more of who you are with the world, especially when you have a lot of eyes watching you as a coach and social psychologist, but Erin has continued to lean into it with authenticity and grace, even when people aren't as accepting as they'd hope.

The second part of Alaina’s coming out story is her journey to parenthood with Nancy. Now married, Alaina and Nancy started their parenting adventure in a way that requires them to constantly come out, and in her interview, Alaina shares how that feels and how she deals with that every day.

It's not just Queer folks that have a coming out story!
Can you remember a moment like this: when palms are sweating, your stomach is churning and you're full-on scared. Because you have to tell someone something. About yourself. About your life. You don't know how they'll take it. You fear the worst. That's a "coming out" moment.
Whether you're LGBTQ2S+ or not, you'll be inspired by Nancy Shadlock, CEO and Founder of Centered Life Coaching and her guests as they explore "coming out" stories of all kinds. Listen in weekly as people talk about coming out as trans, as a sex therapist, or share coming out about domestic abuse they've endured. Meet everyday people getting their brave on.
We're all hiding in closets of our own making. Everyone has a different story. We are always evolving. We can shed what's no longer true for us. Be inspired by those who left the closet for something better and are willing to talk about it to help you find the courage to rock the next evolution of your own coming out story.
