Do you want to lead with more courage and heart? In this podcast, farm-girl-turned chief experience officer Heather Dawson talks about why it's possible to be an emotionally intelligent leader and grow a successful and sustainable organisation.
In this episode, we talk about how to balance being a human-centric leader while managing commercial pressures. Heather grew up on a farm in Nebraska and moved into senior financial services sales and leadership roles in the US and Australia but ultimately, she reveals how burn-out led her on a personal growth journey and into the mindfulness space. She also discusses some of the tools she uses as an emotionally intelligent leader.
In our conversation, Heather shares: ◆ How to use EQ to drive a successful and sustainable organisation ◆ Why burn-out can be a force for growth ◆ Why empathy, not tech, is the future of workplace ◆ Mindfulness tools for authentic leaders ◆ How to create a culture of trust
My guest this week on the podcast is former PR turned Psychic and highly successful author, podcast-host and mentor Helen Jacobs. There was a lot going on, I was ‘doing’ all the right things; new business meetings – tick, marketing plan – tick, delivering great experiences – tick, but this wasn’t converting. I was exhausted and it felt like pushing sh*t uphill…
How many of us have been in the hustle and the grind yet we don’t feel like we are getting anywhere?
So, when Helen Jacobs beamed into the room it was literally like an angel with a halo of bright-shiny-lightbulbs going on. She described the signs of working out of alignment with our soul’s purpose – disconnected from self, exhausted, working against the grain vs working in the flow that comes when we are aligned with what we are put in this world to do.
In our conversation, Helen shares:
I highly recommend that you tune into Helen’s work – it was a gamechanger for me you can find out more about her and her products and services https://helenjacobs.co/about/. I LOVE her little sage oracle cards (https://thelittlesage.com/) that are now back in stock and her fabulous book ‘You already know’ (https://helenjacobs.co/you-already-know-book/).
In this mini workshop masquerading as a podcast we will take a moment to pause with the hope that, instead of bowling into the Christmas break in ‘reactive mode’, you can transition more mindfully into the break and ultimately, 2021.
In this podcast I will be guiding you through; - Taking a moment to pause and reflect on the year that has been - Acknowledging the wins and the lessons learnt - Identifying some things, you may need to ‘let go of’ in order to transition into the break

In this podcast, we will be talking about: • Why it’s essential to focus on taking care of yourself and not just others at this time of year • How to stop your wellbeing getting seriously off track • Identifying the one ‘keystone’ habit that will ensure you maintain your energy • How to create boundaries and what to say ‘no’ too both at work and home • How to mindfully transition into your break so you can really enjoy it

Here are the tips to stay focused:
Show notes: Oscar was generous enough to answer a bonus question which is so relevant right now.
Question: How do you listen through video conferences and particularly listen to what is not being said.
In opening, Oscar talks about the 3 types of video meetings we are experiencing right now 1. Intimate 1:1 2. Interactive 1: a few 3. Inert – listen-only mode
Here are his tips to stay focused on listening and engaged in these types of meetings:
Intimate Before the meeting choose the modality that supports the type of meeting you are having i.e. not everything needs video, would the meeting be better served by being audio-only and you both head out for a walk?
When you just have audio it can be better to tune into breathing - this can tell you a lot about what is / isn’t being said.
At the end of the meeting make a ‘noticing appreciation’ from the discussion. i.e. not necessarily the content but, the ‘how’, what worked really well from the conversation and that you appreciated.
Coaching question to ask them: ‘How was that for you?’
Inter-active Make sure before the meeting that the webcam is at eye level and get the speaker's eyes as close to the webcam as possible.
To keep yourself engaged and listening use the chat functionality to choose a question that is relevant not just to you but potentially your team or, someone else that couldn’t attend the meeting but that you anticipate a question they may have.
Post – record a summary of the meeting – voice memo or video for those that couldn’t attend, another great way to ensure you listen and engage throughout.
Inert Set up your focus for the session at first. What do I want to learn from this presentation, write it on a sticky note and put it close to the webcam.
To increase listening focus listen to parts of the presentation with your eyes closed (to help remove distraction).
See if you can notice the colour of the presenter’s eyes
Take notes vs the learning objective and then tell someone what you learnt and what you want to apply.
Finally, Oscar ended with a challenge, particularly for intimate meetings, instead of just asking someone “How are you going right now?’. Find a question to ask that will help you listen beyond the stock standard answer e.g. ‘how’s your sleep going? how’s your exercise going?’
If you have ever been told that you need to listen more or you find yourself finishing someone else’s sentences, or you simply want to build greater mastery in how you lead and connect with people then this is the podcast for you!
This podcast is not only about challenging what we think listening really is, but also explores what can change when listening is done well. It’s filled with practical insights and tools to get you started on a more ‘skilful’ listening journey.

The winter season is often a time of retreating, reflecting and it's also, a time of ‘finishing’ things to make way for new things that the future may hold...
In this podcast we will talk about: - Why it’s essential to reflect on both our thoughts and emotions. - Creating the space for you to look inside and reflect on your progress so far this year. - Guide you through the ‘5-step process’ to reflect and re-calibrate on your goals for the year.
If you are anything like us, you probably think technology is fabulous enabling all sorts of time efficiencies and ways to stay connected in today’s fast-paced work world…but, as with all things, there is a ‘light and a dark side’. The possibility to be ‘always on’ and, the relentless ‘attention economy’, is giving rise to devise addiction and feelings of stress and overwhelm. The good news is there is a way to take back control. The secret lies in consciously choosing how you want to engage with technology in a way that will support your wellbeing and enable you to be more present with the people around you.
So, in honor of the fact that May is the official month of Mindfulness, we wanted to tackle this issue head on!
